It was a strange morning for the Director’s Guild of America (DGA) Monday, as the organization announced some — but not all — of the TV nominations for the 2020 DGA Awards.
A note included in the official nomination statement explained that the nods for the Comedy Series, Dramatic Series, and Variety/Talk/News/Sports — Specials categories will be announced on Friday, rather than today as scheduled, due to an error related to the organization’s newly implemented electronic entry submissions process. The categories in question require a re-vote, the DGA explained. Variety reported last week that the DGA sent members an email stating that “Transparent” creator Jill Soloway had been mistakenly omitted from the comedy series ballot for her direction of “Transparent Musicale Finale,” and advising members to recast their vote in the category if they so chose.
Still, there were plenty of accolades to go around in the official announcement,...

The 71st Annual Directors Guild of America Awards will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, with awards to be given out in 11 categories across film and television.
Alfonso Cuaron is the runaway favorite to take home his second feature film DGA Award for “Roma,” which would set him up for the corresponding Oscar since the two bodies have only ever disagreed seven times in 70 years. He previously won both for “Gravity” (2013). Spike Lee (“BlacKkKlansman”) is in second place in our odds and would be the first black winner in DGA history.
Last year, Cuaron’s friend Guillermo del Toro took home the DGA and Oscar for “The Shape of Water.”
See DGA Awards: Alfonso Cuaron all but certain to win key Oscar precursor
On the TV side, “The Americans” is predicted to bag another farewell prize, while it’s a tight one between “Atlanta” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” for comedy honors.

Comedy series creators dominate this year’s roster of Directors Guild of America TV awards nominees. Donald Glover is contending for an episode in the sophomore season of “Atlanta,” which also reaped a bid for Hiro Murai. Both Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband Daniel Palladino vie for installments in the second edition of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” And Bill Hader is nominated for the pilot of “Barry.”
Among the TV drama helmers is Adam McKay for an episode of “Succession.” He could well be a nominee for his film “Vice” as well. He contends here against “Ozark” star Jason Bateman, long-time “Homeland” helmer Lesli Linka Glatter, Chris Long for “The Americans” series finale and Daina Reid for a second season episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
On the telefilm/limited series side, Barry Levinson made it a lucky 13 DGA nominations with his bid for “Paterno.” He faces off against Cary Joji Fukunaga...

The Director’s Guild of America gave its stamp of approval to a number of actors-turned-directors Monday afternoon, nominating a slew of famous faces for its 2019 DGA Awards.
Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Bill Hader (“Barry”), Sacha Baron Cohen (“Who Is America?”), and Ben Stiller (“Escape at Dannemora”) all landed their first DGA nominations, while Donald Glover (“Atlanta”) scored his second nomination for the series.
“Atlanta” was one of a few projects scoring multiple nominations, as Hiro Murai was also selected for his work on “Teddy Perkins” (IndieWire’s pick for the best TV episode of 2019). Daniel Palladino and Amy Sherman-Palladino were both nominated for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and three directors were honored from “A Series of Unfortunate Events”: Barry Sonnenfeld, Bo Welch, and Allan Arkush were all chosen in the Children’s Programs category.

Tom Hardy and Shia Labeouf co-starred together in John Hillcoat’s 2012 crime drama “Lawless,” and the films rocky production left Hardy with a respect and appreciation for his co-star, whose life and career has been more tumultuous in recent years. On the set of “Lawless,” where the actors were playing bootleggers during the Prohibition era, Labeouf drank moonshine by the gallon to get into character.
The actor confirmed in a revealing Esquire profile that an on-set altercation between himself and Hardy one day led to a drunken Labeouf punching Hardy and knocking him out. The story has long been a rumor about the “Lawless” production. Hellcoat confirmed in a 2016 Reddit Ama that there was in fact a fight between the two actors that resulted in both men having to be restrained.

Shia Labeouf’s career has been tumultuous over the last several years. In 2017 alone, the actor was sued for $5 million by a bartender, arrested in Savannah, Georgia for public intoxication, and ordered to attend a ten-week rehab program. In a revealing new Esquire profile, Labeouf finally comes clean about his past ahead of the press tour for his new film, “Borg vs McEnroe.”
“I’m a buffoon. My public outbursts are failures. They’re not strategic,” Labeouf said bluntly. “They’re a struggling motherfucker showing his ass in front of the world.”
The actor told Esquire it’s finally time to “take ownership of [his] shit” and “clean up [his] side of the street.” In advance of his “Borg vs. McEnroe” publicity tour, Labeouf has been obsessively preparing for interviews over the last two months. Whether its video helmers or stage directors, Sundance has been a reliable launchpad lieu for nouveau British talent — video helmer Fredrik Bond (The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman) and Rupert Goold (True Story) come to mind. Yet another directorial debut on our predictions list, there is reason to believe that this shot in 2014 crime drama might drop in early 2016. With a background in television (episodes of “Skins” and “Doctor Who”) prior to working on his directorial debut, Adam Smith directed the heavily sensorial and pulsating concert vid Don’t Think. Starring Michael Fassbender and festival fave Brendan Gleeson with a noteworthy trio of supporting players in Sean Harris (a must see in Yann Demange’s ’71), Lyndsey Marshal and Rory Kinnear, Trespass Against Us also employs the service of cinematographer Eduard Grau (Buried/Suffragette) and naturally an original score from The Chemical Brothers.

Cult horror comic Hack/Slash has spent years in development as a movie, but now THR is reporting that it’s being set up as a series at Relativity Television.
Over the years, the project has courted directors such as Marcus Nispel, Fredrik Bond and Todd Lincoln, with Justin Marks and Stephen Susco among the writers that took a crack at the script. Now, the series will be produced by Adrian Askarieh and Ray Ricord, with Skip Woods (Swordfish, A Good Day to Die Hard, the Hitman movies) on writing duties. Apparently the “goal to make it a dark and gritty show in The Walking Dead mold.”
For the uninitiated, THR has also provided a synopsis:

She is partnered on her journey with Vlad, a hulking companion who serves as her protector. ★★☆☆☆Opening with an blurry-eyed, ethereal exposition that treats the audience to a brief taste of the film's tragic climax, Fredrik Bond's The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman (2013) is a contemporary fairytale that imbues its tripped-out, quasi-romantic thriller with a hefty touch of the supernatural. In the immediate aftermath of the tragic death of his mother, Charlie (Shia Labeouf) has a vivid hallucination in which she tells him to pack his bags and go to Bucharest. Unfortunately, she actually meant to say Budapest (no, really), and if she had corrected herself her son Charlie would almost certainly have avoided the violent and taxing holiday he's about to embark upon.

Following a creative hiccup that resulted in the loss of director Fredrik Bond, the action sequel London Has Fallen is seemingly back on track with Scandinavian director Babak Najafi, director of the Snabba Cash sequel Easy Money II: Hard to Kill, behind the camera. We already knew Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman were all returning from Olympus Has Fallen, and now The Wrap has added a new cast member into the mix with Watchmen and A Nightmare on Elm Street remake star Jackie Earle Haley taking the role of Deputy Chief Mason. What are the odds that he ends up being the main bad guy? We're not sure, but casting an actor like that in what seems like a disposable role certainly raises our eyebrows. In addition, the trade has revealed that other returning cast members from the original film include Melissa Leo as Secretary of Defense Ruth...

(Cbr) Scandinavian director Babak Najafi will take the reins for "London Has Fallen," the follow-up to 2013's surprise hit "Olympus Has Fallen," Heat Vision reports. Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett and Melissa Leo on board to reprise their roles from the action thriller. Najafi, who previously helmed two episodes of Cinemax’s "Banshee," will replace Fredrik Bond, who departed the project earlier this month, citing creative differences. Najafi joins the sequel just as it prepares to begin the first half of principal photography. "London" will shoot for four weeks before breaking until February, when Butler — who is currently working on the feature film Geostorm — will join the production. The "Olympus Has Fallen" sequel finds the new franchise’s hero trio traveling from Washington, D.C., to London to attend the funeral of the British prime minister. While across the pond, they’re unexpectedly caught in the middle...

Earlier this month, the Olympus Has Fallen sequel lost its director, Fredrik Bond, with just weeks before the film started shooting. Thankfully though Millennium and Gerard Butler have found a replacement in Scandinavian director Babak Najafi. He directed the Snabba cash sequel Easy Money II: Hard to Kill, but London Has Fallen will be his English-language debut.
As soon as Bond left London, the studio and Butler started looking for a new director to take over. But the actor wasn't liking the directing prospects so much so that he considered leaving the project entirely. Wayne Blair (The Sapphires) and Gary Fleder (Homefront, Runaway Jury) were considered, but Najafi led the race.
Written by Creighton Rothenberger, Katrin Benedikt, and Christian Gudegast. The Olympus sequel picks up in London, where the British Prime Minister has passed away under mysterious circumstances. His funeral is a must-attend event for leaders of the Western world.

It's not a matter of if, but when Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele will take the hilarity they consistently display on Comedy Central to the big screen. As unlikely as it may seem (or maybe not, when you consider the surprisingly high box office receipts), Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart’s White House takeover pic Olympus Has Fallen will be getting an equally ludicrous, action-packed sequel with the upcoming London Has Fallen. However, recently creative differences saw Bond leave the project weeks before production was slated to begin, prompting producers to quickly look for a replacement to step up and stay on schedule. Now it sounds like they've found one as THR reports Scandinavian director Babak Najafi, director of the Snabba Cash sequel Easy Money II: Hard to Kill, is now in talks to tackle the sequel instead. After Fredrik Bond quit last week, a new director has been found for London Has Fallen, starring Gerard Butler...
Over the weekend, director Antoine Fuqua scored himself a second box office hit in a row, as The Equalizer grossed $35m in the Us alone. That's not bad at all for an R-rated movie, and Fuqua's previous film, Olympus Has Fallen, also proved a sizeable hit. So much so in fact that the sequel, London Has Fallen, is edging closer to shooting.
Fuqua's not directing it however - his next project is The Magnificent Seven, starring Denzel Washington, that starts shooting next week. Fuqua is said to have not been keen on the direction London Has Fallen was taking, hence going with other projects. The man who was taking his place, Fredrik Bond, then also left the project last week.
With production imminent, and Gerard Butler leading the returning cast, Millennium Films needed a director quickly.

Back in August it was revealed that "London Has Fallen," which is a sequel to Gerard Butler's "Olympus Has Fallen," hired director Fredrik Bond (Charlie Countryman) with plans of starting production in October. That didn't leave a lot of time for Bond to come aboard and get everything ready before cameras started rolling. And now comes word that the accelerated schedule scared Bond, who decided to drop out of the project. Search for his replacement is already underway. It's expected that a new helmer will be hired within the next 72 hours. There are other issues that the new director will have to keep in mind. Because of Butler's other obligations, "London Has Fallen" will shoot in October for four weeks with Morgan Freeman, Aaron Eckhart, Angela Bassett and Melissa Leo. Production will then shut down and pick up again in February, when Butler will become available. "London Has Fallen...

We don't want to create a panic or anything, don't freak out, but...the "Olympus Has Fallen" sequel "London Has Fallen" has lost its director. Even worse? The movie is supposed to start shooting in six weeks. Oh no! What will Millennium do!? Fredrik Bond ("Charlie Countryman") was originally slated to helm the movie, but ye olde "creative differences" have forced him out. (Guys, this isn't an arthouse film. It's Gerard Butler yelling and shooting for two hours, this time in the U.K.) Anyway, Millenium is working fast to get a new director in place by the time Monday rolls around, and it shouldn't be too hard. A robot could direct this thing, and even with a time crunch to start lensing, we're pretty sure whoever comes aboard can get into the flow of things pretty quickly. "London Has Fallen" will open on October 2, 2015. Meanwhile, "The Girl Next Door...

Just six weeks before filming was to begin, the upcoming action thriller "London Has Fallen" has lost its director.
Fredrik Bond has dropped out of helming Millennium's sequel to last year's surprise hit "Olympus Has Fallen". A company spokesman claim the departure was amicable and due to creative differences. The company hopes to secure a new director by early next week.
Bond ("Charlie Countryman") only came onboard the film in August, and the production's accelerated schedule may have played a big factor in the decision. Bond has come from a commercials and indie feature world, so the jump to not just a big budget action thriller, but one on such a demanding schedule would be daunting to say the least.

The sequel to 2013’s box office hit Olympus Has Fallen was set to begin shooting in just six weeks, with original cast members Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman set to return. London Has Fallen has lost its director. With shooting just six weeks away, Fredrik Bond and Millennium have parted ways over the sequel to 2013’s surprise action hit Olympus Has Fallen. A spokesperson for the company confirmed Bond’s exit, which is due to creative differences. Those differences may be a result of the movie’s accelerated schedule and Bond only coming aboard in August. One insider said prep time was a factor. Bond, a commercials director, was making the leap from the dramatic indie world — he directed the well-regarded Shia Labeouf drama Charlie Countryman — to the big-budget action world.

What seemed like an impossible idea before last year’s financial victory over fellow terrorism thriller White House Down is closer to becoming a reality. Fredrik Bond, who last shot Shia Labeouf drama Charlie Countryman, will marshal the madness. With Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Angela Bassett, Radha Mitchell and Morgan Freeman returning as Secret Service agent Mike Banning, Us President Benjamin Asher, Secret Service Director Lynn Jacobs, Leah Banning and Speaker Trumbull respectively, the sequel’s plot will see the characters headed to London to attend the funeral of our Prime Minister. Charlie Countryman helmer Fredrik Bond is said to be in talks to direct the follow-up to Olympus Has Fallen which has been named London Has Fallen. He takes over from the first movie’s director Antoine Fuqua. Bond was recently linked to a number of projects, including Pirates of the Caribbean 5.
Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman are all set to reprise their roles from the first movie, and as you can probably guess from the title, the sequel is set to bring the action to London, where the British Prime Minister has passed away under mysterious circumstances.
As you might expect however, his funeral is a must-attend event for leaders of the Western world, but what starts out as the most protected event on earth, turns into a deadly plot to kill the world’s most powerful leaders and unleash what is described as a terrifying vision of the future.

The 2013 blockbuster, Olympus Has Fallen, was not without its charms. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, it had a dark grittiness to it, setting it slightly apart from the standard, cookie cutter action films that essentially take the premise of Die Hard and change the setting and circumstance. Inevitably, it was a box office success, too, which meant a follow-up was immediately discussed. The sequel was already named as London Has Fallen, and now it has a director – in the surprising form of Fredrik Bond.
Bond is an unexpected choice to take this franchise forward, as he is relatively inexperienced behind the camera. He has one feature-length credit to his name – Charlie Countryman – which was not exactly an action-packed movie. However, it is Bond that is in the process of stepping up to this plate, looking to call the shots on a script whose final draft was delivered by Christian Gudegast (A Man Apart...

Antoine Fuqua won't be back to direct London Has Fallen. But his replacement appears to have been found...
Filming can't be too far away on the sequel to last year's surprise action hit, Olympus Has Fallen. We already know that the follow-up is going to be called London Has Fallen, with Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman all down to reprise their roles from the first film.
However, director Antoine Fuqua, currently putting the finishing touches to The Equalizer, won't now be back. In his place? That'd be Fredrik Bond, currently best known for the Shia Labeouf movie Charlie Countryman. Bond is said to be in negotiations to direct the movie, with filming set to begin in October.
London Has Fallen is expected to be released in late 2015.

Olympus Has Fallen was a big, chubby hit last year, getting director Antoine Fuqua back on the director A-List. But when the time came to put together a sequel, Fuqua got busy, and is currently following up the upcoming The Equalizer with Southpaw. That left the director's chair open for the upcoming sequel, London Has Fallen, and now it can be filled. The Hollywood Reporter is saying that filmmaker Fredrik Bond will the director of London has Fallen, which will feature the continuing adventures of Agent Mike Banning. Gerard Butler returns to essay the Banning role, and he'll be rejoined by President Asher (Aaron Eckhart) and Speaker Trumbull (Morgan Freeman), aka the toughest Oval Office in the history of movies. Now there's also a synopsis for the film, which involves another disaster that strikes while the aforementioned trio are in London at the funeral of the recently-deceased Prime Minister. No...

After being shortlisted for Pirates of the Caribbean 5 last year, and ultimately losing the job to Kon-Tiki duo Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, director Fredrik Bond has lined up his next project. THR has learned that Bond is in talks to be at the helm of London Has Fallen, the sequel to one of the two White House thrillers from 2013. Olympus Has Fallen doesn't need a sequel, but that's not stopping Millennium Films from making it, complete with the return of principal cast members Gerard Butler (doing his best John McClane), Aaron Eckhart as the U.S. President and Morgan Freeman as Speaker of the House. This time, Butler is back in the ranks of the Secret Service, accompanying the president across the pond while he and the Speaker attend the funeral of the British Prime Minister. And as you might guess, some kind of terrorist attack crates absolute chaos in the titular British city.

Three days later, I’m still not quite sure what to make of Charlie Countryman. A messy, compelling fever dream of a film, it cleverly blends magical realism and the quest archetype with a Shakespearean love story and pulse-pounding action sequences, but it’s also by no means a home run. Trying to assign the film to a genre proved fruitless, and drawing its plot and characters out on paper in attempt to discern some deeper meaning only left me confused. Clearly, director Fredrik Bond (known for his music videos) prioritized style over substance with his first feature film. And to Bond’s credit, it’s filled with some strikingly beautiful moments. Outside of those moments, however, it’s difficult to get on Charlie Countryman‘s side, given its utter lack of concern for coherent storytelling.

Woot woot! My pick to win Best Director at the Oscars took home the Feature Film trophy at the recently concluded Directors Guild of America awards. And it's truly deserving! Cuaron defied gravity, yes pun intended, to create "Gravity," a movie grounded in sci-fi realism that many directors before him (including James Cameron) were saying that it would be hard to do. But Cuaron did it, and did it extremely well! So hats off to "Gravity" and Cuaron's direction!

Updated: Gravity does not seem to be falling on the awards circuit. Alfonso Cuarón walked away with the top honor at the Directors Guild of America Awards Saturday night in Los Angeles, beating out Martin Scorsese, David O. Russell, Paul Greengrass, and Steve McQueen.

To prepare for his role in “Charlie Countryman,” Shia Labeouf went ahead and tried some LSD, and according to costar Rupert Grint things got pretty dicey thereafter.
The “Harry Potter” star explained, “If anything will make you not do drugs, it's watching that. He smashed the place up, got naked and kept seeing this owl."
Director Fredrik Bond added, "In the script, it's Carpathian ecstasy, a special hostel ecstasy that exists in maybe just Bucharest. So, Shia said he took acid? I didn't know he went out and said that. But it was always ecstasy in the script."
