He began his career in Germany in the late 1960s. He became one of Europe's leading figures in theater and opera, in a career that spanned four decades.
His family moved to France when he was very young. There he met some of the leading artistic figures of the time, including playwright Eugene Ionesco and writer Marguerite Duras.
