Filmmaking contests rarely attract enough high-quality films to result in an embarrassment of riches, but horror anthology “The ABCs of Death 2” produced so many impressive short films that a third compilation was in order. That collection of shorts, entitled “The ABCs of Death 2.5,” premiered Tuesday on Vimeo, where viewers can rent the film for $2.99 or purchase it for $5.99.

The first two “ABCs of Death” were both comprised of 26 individual horror shorts, each corresponding to a letter of the alphabet. Both compilations saved a single letter to be used as the basis for a global filmmaking competition, the winner of which would have his or her short included in the final movie. In 2014, the second edition of the competition attracted 541 entries from filmmakers in more than 40 countries. Every short had to be three minutes long and begin with the letter “M.

The more I watch The ABCs Of Death 2, the more I love it. Seriously. I can’t get enough. This isn’t just another gimmicky horror anthology that throws some random short stories together in hopes of a cult following, but instead an intelligent collection of grim fables that *mostly* deliver death, destruction, and a heaping helping of mental unrest. The original film worked as a genre experiment, testing the waters of insanity to see if audiences would react favorably, but its sequel shows more confidence, creativity, and gusto when analyzing all the shorts as one marketable package. With twenty-six different segments, there’s bound to be some stinkers, but where The ABCs Of Death is a 50/50 mixed bag, The ABCs Of Death 2 showcases an impressive amount of successes compared to a few atrocious letters that are better left forgotten – but the ratio still demands an enthusiastic encore.

Like its predecessor, ABCs of Death 2 has a simple conceit: There's a short film about death for each letter of the alphabet, all by different filmmakers. Naturally, some of these poison bonbons are better than others — which ones score with you depends on whether you have a taste for scares or grim humor, suspense or irony. Overall, it's a strong sampler, with surprising variety. Not all the films are horror: Juan Martinez Moreno provides a home-invasion short that's straight-up thriller, and Robert Boocheck's stylish, slow-motion drug freak-out delivers a terrific punchline. (I'm avoiding the titles; guessing what each letter will mean is part of the fun.) A few imaginative highlights: Chris Nash's tale of a woman who delays her pregnancy until her fetus...

In ABCs of Death 2, 26 directors contributed a short film, each taking one letter from the alphabet as their inspiration. Nigerian director Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen brings us a supernatural tale that has historical roots in L is for Legacy, and he shared his thoughts on the subject matter and the practical makeup effects used to bring his beast to life:
“It was a true event in history and that legacy kept on. Someone was wrongly accused and the beast came out as the manifestation of the curse that was placed on the people. I chose this story because I like the idea of the supernatural having control over the physical. Somebody that was innocent was wrongly accused and whatever he pronounced became real. I’m a strong believer of the spiritual and that story resonated with me. If you are true and decent, the physical will work for you, no matter how misunderstood you are.

With Fantastic Fest 2014 drawing closer by the day, the horror lover inside me is ready to burst out in a fit of obsessive jubilation knowing the onslaught of movies I’ll be experiencing. I really enjoyed the first ABCs of Death horror anthology film, and the sequel looks like it will be at least as equally insane. 26 short films directed by 26 talented directors make up the ABCs of Death 2 and those films are disgustingly brutal, disturbing, and very funny. Each film corresponds with a letter from the alphabet, and the directors had complete freedom to do what they wanted with the letter assigned. The ABC’s Of Death was an ambitious horror anthology from 2012 consisting of 26 shorts from 26 different directors all of whom accepted the challenge of taking a single letter of the alphabet, picking a word that begins with that letter and then making a short film about death with that word at the core.
We have had anthologies with segments from different directorial hands before (the VHS films are a good example) but with 27 (the letter ‘O’ had two directors) you’d have expected the result to be unwieldy and inconsistent. And it was, yet the crazy concept mostly worked. I only recall a couple of duds, and since these films only lasted 3 or 4 minutes each, taking the bad with the good was painless. It will be interesting to see what they do with the sequel. It appears the format is identical with films from Nigeria to UK to Brazil and everywhere in between.

I don't know what to say, but this red band trailer for ABCs of Death 2 is doing nothing for me, it just looks cheap and uninspired, but perhaps I'm just in a bad mood because I think that's sort of the film's intention. The trailer is certainly gory and beyond what we most often get from a red band trailer, which is probably why it was labeled "extreme" in the email I received, but I guess I just don't see the humor in it, at least not as it's presented here in this trailer. The film brings together 26 directors for 26 different segments, all representing a letter of the alphabet and each director was given free reign as long as their segment was inspired by a word beginning with their respective letter and a story involving death. Said directors are Alejandro Brugues, Bill Plympton, Chris Nash, Dennison Ramalho, Erik Matti,...

We’re nearing September, which means we’re getting close to Alamo Drafthouse’s 10th annual Fantastic Fest. The film festival held in Austin, Texas is one of the most interesting and exciting fests around. Catering to hardcore cinephiles with a little bit of an interest in the strange, Fantastic Fest features a bevy of some of the best new horror films, indie thrillers, dark comedies, and low-budget sci-fi. Last year some of the best films included at the fest were Afflicted, Borgman, Jodorowsky’s Dune, The Sacrament, Blue Ruin, Grand Piano, We Are What We Are, A Field in England, The Congress, and Big Bad Wolves. In 2011 Fantastic Fest was one of the places to see Adam Wingard’s amazing You’re Next before it was shelved until it’s official release just last year.
Now the initial lineup for the 2014 festival has been announced and as always it looks very promising.

Our favorite film festival in the world is nigh. Later next month, Austin, Texas will host hundreds of genre fans for Fantastic Fest 2014!! We have the full list which includes the Us Premiere of Tusk as well as the World Premieres of ABCs of Death 2 and Horsehead. These won’t be all the films that will play the 10th anniversary of the film festival but it would be enough if it was. Look forward to more announcement waves of programming and don’t forget to follow up with our predictions that we made last week. I have added trailers above the film titles, if available. If the trailer is not available, there will be a still above the title.

It's that time of year again, isn't it? There is no greater party on Earth for fans of genre films than Austin's annual Fantastic Fest, and ten years in, they just keep making it better. "In 2014, we are taking no prisoners. This festival is going to set new boundaries of decadence, destruction and debauchery." - Tim League As much as I love events like Cannes, Sundance, or Toronto, I can't imagine the directors of those festivals ever issuing that statement. The scary thing is that Tim League isn't kidding. Fantastic Fest is special because it's much more than just movies being screened. Every day is packed with events that elevate the entire festival, and with this year taking place at the new Alamo Drafthouse on S. Lamar, complete with the brand-new Highball, it feels like it's going to be a blow-out the likes of which even the most avid Fantastic...

The Alamo Drafthouse’s Fantastic Fest has a stellar rep around these parts, and it’s not hard to see why when you consider some of the indie titles that have played there in recent years. Last year alone saw Coherence, Grand Piano and Septic Man make their world premieres, and films like Blue Ruin, Afflicted, Witching & Bitching, The Sacrament and Borgman all land in the U.S. for the first time.
This year doesn’t look to be any different, with a terrific lineup of indie titles including boatloads of promising horror. We’ve got sequels like The ABCs of Death 2 and V/H/S Viral, and originals like Kevin Smith’s anticipated Tusk and The Babadook. Keep in mind this is only the first wave of film announcements for Fantastic Fest 2014 – we’ll keep you posted as more titles are confirmed for the festival, which runs in Austin,...

Later this year mega-horror anthology sequel 'The ABCs of Death 2' will be released theatrically, through VOD and of course on DVD and Blu-Ray thanks to Magnet Releasing. But sandwiched in between and likely leading up to the release will be Drafthouse Films' spin-off anthology 'The ABCs of Death 1.5'. The new compilation will feature some of producers Ant Timpson and Tim League's most favourite submitted entries they received this year for the upcoming sequels' special 26th spot. The placement seeks a director to submit a potential entry for the letter 'M', a position that was eventually awarded to Robert Boocheck's 'M is for Masticate' (below). They received 541 entries in total and have whittled down the selection to the select few shown below. 'The ABCs of Death 1.5' will be unveiled on VOD later this year and will also be appearing at select Alamo Drafthouse cinemas....

2013 was a great year for horror throughout numerous avenues. Independent film offered some standouts with the disease consuming Contracted, forced intervention Resolution, the creature feature Grabbers, and many more. Hollywood gave us hordes of zombies with the surprising World War Z, a fresh home invasion take with You’re Next, and legitimate scares with The Conjuring.
But horror wasn’t restrained to just film, television made big leaps with Mads Mikkelsen’s great portrayal in Hannibal, the clever re-imaging of Norman in the Bates Motel, and the continuing mayhem offered in Game of Thrones. Still, horror couldn’t be stopped as music jumped into the mix with superb soundtracks released from Death Waltz, Waxwork, and One Way Static records. And it didn’t end there because horror was everywhere!!! Here are a few of my favorites from 2013:
