“Bad Sisters” doesn’t have a good Rotten Tomatoes score, it has a perfect one. The Apple TV+ drama series merits a jaw-dropping 100% on this site that aggregates reviews.
Created by Sharon Horgan, Dave Finkel, and Brett Baer, “Bad Sisters” follows the five Garvey sisters (led by Horgan’s eldest sister Eva) as they try to kill Claes Bang‘s John Paul, the abusive husband of Grace Garvey (Anne-Marie Duff). The action moves between two timelines. The first follows the sisters plotting John Paul’s murder while the second shows two insurance agents (Brian Gleeson‘s Thomas and Daryl McCormack‘s Matthew) trying to prove that the sisters were involved in John Paul’s death in a desperate attempt to save their business.
The juxtaposing timelines make for a whip-smart drama full of pitch-black comedy and pitch-perfect performances. It’s obvious why the show has received that perfect Rotten Tomatoes score.

Pop-country phenoms, Harmonica ruled the circuit, boasting sold-out arena tours and lavish lifestyles. When they find themselves on the other side of that fame decades later, Monica (Josephine Bornebusch) and Harry (Jonas Karlsson) have to decide whether to embark on a reunion tour or stay firmly planted in their present-day, lives racked with grief and angst. Their marriage on the brink of collapse, the two agree to take one last shot at living their passions outright, the traumas they’ve accumulated in tow.
Vivid flashbacks establish a profound dichotomy in this Swedish-language, Viaplay Original drama series. The Berlinale was the world’s first big festival to embrace drama series, launching Berlinale Series in 2015 and adding a year later an industry component, known from 2019 as the Berlinale Series Market. It has grown into one of continental Europe’s biggest TV events. Following, seven takes on this year’s edition.
TV Tail Wags Film Dog
The Berlinale Series Market used to be a burgeoning sidebar. Now, added to the Festival’s Berlinale Series section, it’s the biggest industry event at the Berlin Festival. That’s of course a sign of the times. In 2017, almost 70% of the U.K.’s film/high-end TV production spend went to film. In 2021, the ratio was reversed, with the Hetv sector accounting for a massive $5.6 billion – 73% – of a total $7.6 billion spend, according to a BFI report. Money talks. Many Berlin competition movies are produced and sold by companies whose revenues might not reach $1 million a year.

Anders Jensen, the sleek and mild-mannered president and CEO of Nent Group, has transformed the company’s Scandinavian streamer, Viaplay, into Netflix’s biggest European competitor since taking its helm in 2018. Jensen, who describes himself as a “content nerd,” is the recipient of Variety’s Vanguard Award, which will be presented at Mipcom in Cannes this year. He is behind the company’s big strategic move into scripted content.
Jensen joined the company in 2014 when it was part of the listed conglomerate Modern Times Group, before it split into two companies and rebranded its entertainment assets into Nent Group. Jensen says having a focused approach is a prerequisite to have a chance to thrive in today’s increasingly concentrated media landscape.

“Love Me” is a Warner Bros. International Television Production Australia production in association with Aquarius Films for the Foxtel Group’s streaming service Binge. Major production investment came from Screen Australia in association with Film Victoria.

The new production is set during an outbreak that threatens humanity, and sees a pastor and a doctor stuck in a hotel. Another pandemic film is in the making in Sweden, following the earlier announcement of Josephine Bornebusch’s social-distancing drama Orca (see the news). This month, Baker and Alexander Karim started filming Me/We, penned by popular Swedish novelist Camilla Läckberg. Baker is best known as a director and debuted in 2001 with the drama Four Women, whilst Alexander has starred in a number of popular Swedish films, TV series and music videos over the last 20 years. Me/We follows a pastor (played by Alexander Karim) and a doctor (Dilan Gwyn). During a pandemic that threatens humanity, the two are stuck in a hotel, somewhere in Europe. The project has been described as “a film about humanity. About love. And a threat that unites.” Gwyn, a rising talent in her own.
The timely Nordic production will tackle the emotional impact of the ongoing lockdown and is set to premiere exclusively on Viaplay. Josephine Bornebusch will be providing a commentary on these difficult times in a new experimental drama entitled Orca, which is currently in production. Bornebusch, who is best known for her acting career and her directorial work on television productions such as Love Me (2019-2020) and The Sunny Side (2019), is also the writer of her new endeavour. Here, the Swedish filmmaker will dramatise some of the emotional impacts of the current outbreak and will ask what togetherness can mean when we are apart. Throughout the film, the characters will communicate with each other primarily from behind a screen. The cast are filming their scenes one at a time and in the presence of a skeleton crew. The ensemble of actors includes Johan Rheborg, Gustav Lindh, Alba August, Peter Andersson...
Nordic Entertainment Group (Nent Group), Scandinavia’s leading streaming company, has come on board “Orca” (working title), a Swedish drama dealing with social distancing created, written and directed by Josephine Bornebusch (“Love Me”) .
The series, which started to film this week, is headlined by Swedish stars, including Johan Rheborg (“Partisan”), Gustav Lindh (“Love Me”), Alba August (“The Perfect Patient”), Peter Andersson (“Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit”) and Vera Vitali (“Conspiracy of Silence”), as well as Bornebusch. The show will premiere exclusively across the Nordics on Nent Group’s Viaplay streaming service in the fall.
The experimental drama sees its protagonists communicating with one another primarily through their phones and screens; and they are filming their scenes one at a time with a minimal crew present, said Nent Group. “Orca” is being produced by Sofie Palage at Warner Bros. International Television Production Sweden.

When the Nordic entertainment group, one of Scandinavia’s largest media groups, announced last month during the Goteborg Film Festival that it was pulling out of non-scripted content to focus on scripted drama, and film production and distribution, it underscored two market trends in the Nordics: Subscription-based services, whether local or global, are driving the region’s booming drama business, and going forward, the investment into content will be more evenly split between Scandinavia series and movies.
Since Scandinavia is one of the first overseas markets where Netflix and HBO Nordic launched as early as 2012, local streaming services such as Viaplay, CMore and Elisa Viihde reacted fast and stepped up their investment in drama in order to compete. It paid off: Today, unlike in other European regions where local Svod services have either shut down or struggled, the Nordics are home to several powerful local streaming services that are coexisting alongside Netflix and HBO Nordic.

Scandinavian major Nent Group has commissioned romantic drama “Harmonica” from Warner Bros. International Television Production Sweden.
The Swedish series has been co-created by Josephine Bornebusch, whose previous drama “Love Me” has performed strongly on Nent Group’s Viaplay streaming service in the Nordic region, and was recently renewed for a second season.
The six-episode “Harmonica” is co-written and co-directed by Bornebusch and Jonas Karlsson, who also star. They play country music duo Harmonica, who topped the charts in the 1990s, but whose life has been out of key ever since. In an effort to salvage their career and relationship, the couple embark on a tour of Europe that brings their problems to a crescendo but also offers them a chance to find harmony together.

Director May el-Toukhy tackles a subject that has not yet been explored and is frightening in the possibilities it reveals to us as women assume positions of power and authority. The troublesome specter of exploitive female sexuality is also elaborated upon in the Dutch Oscar submission, ‘Instinct’.
Two highly developed Western European nations, Denmark and The Netherlands, take female sexuality to extremes here in ways we only saw before as men’s terrain with such films as Last Tango in Paris or In the Realm of the Senses.
My initial reaction to both films was a sort of shame, as if somewhere deep inside of me, I understood the impulse that impelled both these women to venture into forbidden zones of action, but wished it had not depicted it so graphically. It would take a psychiatrist to explain the impulse in human nature that makes us enter dangerous sexual territories.

When I first reviewed Welcome to Sweden (review here), I was not only nervous about the idea of someone getting a gig by virtue of being Amy Poehler’s brother, but also because the show seemed to be working such a “European” sense of comedy, that I wasn’t sure it would play well to American audiences.
It may have worked out that despite somewhat surprising success, the show remains a bit niche, but Greg Poehler won me over pretty quickly. Based on Greg’s real experiences living in Sweden, the show is a charmingly-envisioned culture clash that wonderfully avoids trying too hard for the comedy.
The story revolves around Greg, who has fallen in love with Emma (Josephine Bornebusch) and decides to relocate with her so that she can take a job back in Sweden. He had a solid job as an investment broker, with a lot of high profile clients,...

Amy Poehler's Parks and Recreation series has managed to stay on NBC for seven seasons. How will her brother's show, Welcome to Sweden, do in the ratings? Will it have a long run or will it be cancelled like so many other shows? We'll have to wait and see.

NBC has picked up the second season of their low-rated summer sitcom, Welcome to Sweden. There will be 10 episodes.

Welcome to Sweden, the show from executive producer and star Greg Poehler, has been renewed for a second season on NBC.
Welcome to Sweden Renewed
Welcome to Sweden is loosely based on Poehler’s life and follow an American man (Poehler) who moves to Sweden to be with his Swedish girlfriend (Josephine Bornebusch). Welcome to Sweden’s first season is currently airing on NBC, and has featured many high profile guest stars, including Poehler’s sister, Amy Poehler, as well as Will Ferrell, Aubrey Plaza and Gene Simmons. With season 2 on the horizon, Poehler tweeted a few suggestions for dream guest stars, citing Britney Spears, Barack Obama and Hulk Hogan as a few of his top choices.
The show is a particularly risky move for the network, as it features a fair amount of subtitles. In fact, the show has already been picked up for a second season by Swedish television.

Executive produced by Poehler and his famous sister, Amy, the show follows the overseas adventures of a New York accountant (Poehler) who relocates to Sweden with the love of his life (Josephine Bornebusch), who is a native of that country. Welcome to Sweden Review
NBC is rolling the dice on an idea that not only has long odds, it has the potential to alienate a large portion of the target demographic. That’s not quite as bad as it sounds, because the alienation only comes by way of a potential nepotism backlash, and the public is somewhat immune to paying attention to such things, unless someone stirs them up about it.
Welcome to Sweden is a sit-com that is ostensibly based on Greg Poehler’s real experience as a New Yorker who moves to Sweden to live with his girlfriend. Because his sister, Amy, makes several cameo appearances in the show, there’s every chance that the “the way to get a sit-com is to wait until your sister gets one…,” theory might not sit well with some audiences. Audiences are picky bastards, and are made up of members who...

The new NBC comedy, Welcome To Sweden, has a pretty interesting back story. It was created by Greg Poehler (yep, he’s Amy’s brother) and stars Greg, along with Josephine Bornebusch, in the first new U.S. series to be on both American and Swedish TV. Greg and Josie talk about bridging the cultural comedy gap, plus after 11 years in reality TV, Trista Stutter (The Bachelorette, Dancing With The Stars) has a new project. She joins Gretchen Rossi (Real Housewives Of Orange County) and other reality celebs in Marriage Boot Camp and they both tell us what we can expect on the series.

A wise man once said, “I would do anything for love… but I won’t do that.” (And don’t you tell me Meat Loaf isn’t wise.)
On NBC’s freshman comedy Welcome to Sweden, which debuted Thursday at 9/8c, it seems our protagonist Bruce should have taken those words to heart.
Based on the life of executive producer and star Greg Poehler, Sweden finds Bruce uprooting his life and relocating to Sweden to spend more time with his wife, rather than capitalizing on his lucrative career as a celebrity accountant in the United States. (Clients include Greg’s real-life big sis,...

Tonight at 9 p.m., NBC will debut a comedy series starring a Poehler. Not A. Poehler as in Amy, but Greg Poehler, as in her younger brother. A former lawyer whose only Hollywood experience is that blood relation, Greg is the creator/writer/producer/star of Welcome to Sweden, a somewhat-autobiographical tale about a New York accountant named Bruce Evans who meets the Swede of his dreams (played by Josephine Bornebusch) and decides to give it all up for love and move to Scandinavia with her. (The single-camera comedy, which is also executive-produced by Amy, has already aired its first...

The biggest hurdle facing NBC's new comedy Welcome to Sweden is whether or not Americans are willing to read. The series, created by Greg Poehler (brother of Amy, and based on his experiences) follows New York accountant Bruce (Poehler) as he takes a leap of love, moving to Sweden to live with his girlfriend, Emma (Josephine Bornebusch). But one of the show's many charms is how Emma and her family — and essentially everyone else — drift in and out of speaking Swedish. NBC acquired the U.S. broadcast rights to comedy Welcome To Sweden last October and will debut it on July 10. The series, created by Greg Poehler, recently started airing on TV4 in the titular territory. After two weeks there, it’s been recommissioned for a second season. The network has ordered a further 10 episodes of the fish-out-of-water tale that was its first-ever English-speaking series. Siblings Greg and Amy Poehler executive produce the comedy which is based on Greg’s own true life experiences. In the two weeks it’s aired on TV4, it is the channel’s No. 2 rated show and is No. 1 across younger demographics. The story revolves around New York accountant, Bruce, played by Poehler in his acting debut, who falls in love with a Swedish girl, Emma (Josephine Bornebusch) and follows his heart to Sweden. Lena Olin co-stars as Emma’s mother Viveka, and Illeana Douglas and...
