At first glance, The Power may seem like a superhero story crossed with The Handmaid’s Tale, but it is so much more than that. Based on the novel by Naomi Alderman, The Power is an epic story about not just women who are imbued with a mysterious new ability but also how the structure of control and hierarchy of our world shifts because of this change.
The Power posits what it would be like if teenage girls across the globe suddenly manifested the ability to harness electricity through their bodies. Some fear the power, while others embrace what it means for those subjugated because of their gender. In a global tale set in various countries, The Power shows us how fear changes the perspective of men, women, and those who identify with a different sex. Sometimes funny, often dramatic, and always shocking, The Power is a commentary on our...

Exclusive: Paramount+ has greenlit a UK original drama series based on Sarah Pinborough’s sleep deprivation thriller novel Insomnia.
The adaptation will be produced by Left Bank Pictures, the UK production company that reimagined Pinborough’s Behind Her Eyes for Netflix in 2021.
Pinborough will adapt Insomnia for the screen, telling the story of successful career woman Emma Averill, who fears she is losing her mind after suffering from sleep deprivation two weeks before turning 40.
Her mother had a similar experience at the same age, suffering a violent psychotic breakdown on the night of her 40th birthday. But even as she relives the experience of her mother, Averill believes other forces may be at work.
Her mother is hospitalized with a sudden injury, her estranged sister returns without warning, and she feels as if she is being watched. Only by investigating the truth of her painful past, can she find the answers to her present.

Exclusive: The Power, Prime Video’s global thriller drama based on Naomi Alderman’s feminist sci-fi book, continues to undergo personnel changes. Emmy-winning The Handmaid’s Tale director Reed Morano, who had been with the project since its early stages, has exited as both a director and an executive producer.
Morano directed the first two episodes with Leslie Mann and Tim Robbins. After she wrapped the episodes in March 2022, Morano opted not to continue on with the series due to creative differences as the series headed to reshoots with Mann and Robbins both exiting. Toni Collette and Josh Charles eventually were cast in the roles, and Raelle Tucker came on board as showrunner. Upon her exit, Morano also requested to be removed from the credits, which I hear Amazon has agreed to, so she will no longer be listed as a director or executive producer.

Exclusive: Leslie Mann and Tim Robbins have left Amazon Studios’ global thriller drama series The Power. Both roles will be recast.
Adapted by Naomi Alderman based on her feminist sci-fi book, the 10-episode series, from Sister and director Reed Morano, was one of many that were impacted by the pandemic. Mann was cast as lead Margot Cleary – Lopez in October 2019. In February 2020, when the series was gearing up for production, Rainn Wilson was cast as male lead Daniel Dandon.
Filming was delayed for months by the coronavirus pandemic, and Wilson became unavailable. He ultimately left the project, and Robbins was cast as Dandon in January 2021 when the role switched from a series regular to a recurring guest star. (It will remain that way as the part is being recast.) A year and a half later, the series is yet to go into production, with both Mann and Robbins now departing.

Tom Hardy is on the move right now, and since FX‘s Taboo is currently set to “probably” air in 2017, it’s a good idea to burn the show into people’s brains while we’re all hot for Hardy.
The show looks for all the world like the cinematic offspring of the combined well of recent “dark and creepy” efforts, and that’s at least partially because it has production/cast ties with Peaky Blinders.
Hardy will have a lot resting on his shoulders with this effort, as the short-run series apparently focuses heavily on his character. Hardy plays a presumed-dead son who reappears when his father dies, but most people might not want what he manages to inherit, which is largely a lot of people trying to kill him.
It’s hard to make a call based on a trailer alone, despite the inherent irony of that statement,...

From the revenge-via-circular-saw High Tension to the skin-shredding Piranha remake, director Alexandre Aja has memorably dunked past pictures in the blood bucket. But with his adaptation of author Joe Hill’s novel, Horns, coming out this Halloween, Aja has just signed on to helm another book-to-screen project that’s more psychological thriller than bloodbath: The 9th Life of Louis Drax.
Based on the 2004 novel by Liz Jensen that follows a boy plagued by violent occurrences, The 9th Life of Louis Drax will star actor Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey, The Fall) as Dr. Allan Pascal, who tries to figure out the mysteries surrounding 9-year-old Louis Drax’s near-fatal accident. Aja will direct off a script by first-time scribe Max Minghella (who co-stars in Horns). Shooting on the Miramax film is set to begin this October in Vancouver, Canada. We have the official press release with full details below.

Apparently destined to forever star in films with numbers in the title after his work in Fifty Shades Of Grey, Jamie Dornan is leaning into his tragic destiny by taking on a lead role in The Ninth Life Of Louis Drax.Okay, okay, so it’s just a coincidence – and Dornan is already at work on John Wells’ new culinary film, which doesn’t have a title but probably won’t end up with a numerical one – and this has an interesting history. Actor Max Minghella wrote the script, adapting Liz Jensen’s novel, and is carrying on a project that his father, director Anthony Minghella, had wanted to make for years before his death in 2008.The plot follows the titular 9-year-old boy, who suffers a near-fatal accident on his birthday. When a doctor (Dornan) starts treating the lad, he discovers a mystery that snaps the boundaries between reality and fantasy.
