In a career that has spanned seven decades, Roger Corman is nothing short of a legend. His influence and impact are almost immeasurable, having mentored or introduced so many prominent filmmakers working today. That doesn’t even touch on how he changed independent cinema or wore multiple hats doing so: director, producer, writer, and actor, to name a few.
With the legend’s passing this weekend, it feels only appropriate to highlight just a handful of the essential Roger Corman horror movies on streaming. This week’s streaming picks celebrate some of the essential works of Roger Corman horror movies, whether he produced, directed, or appeared on screen.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Shudder is a streaming service that is specifically dedicated to the horror genre, so it’s only fitting that we here on Arrow in the Head should compile a list of the Best Horror Movies on Shudder Right Now. As with all streamers, Shudder has movies that come and go on a regular basis, but if you head over there today here are some of the best movies you can find on the service:
Night Of The Living Dead (1968)
Yes, George A. Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead seems to be available on nearly every streaming service there is, and that’s because the movie is in the public domain due to the copyright notice accidentally being left off the film print. Let’s think for just a moment on the horror genre in the 1980s. Where does your mind take you? For me, slasher movies were the go-to genre of the decade, specifically the early years. They were flawed… yes, and mostly pretty bad, subjectively. But at the same time, they’re fun little thrill rides which deliver on the promise of the tropes and rules one would expect from these films. They all for the most part follow the same formula we are all too familiar with. You have your sex-crazed teenagers who spend their weekend fueling themselves with red cups of beer, doing drugs, and engaging in the occasional premarital sex. All the while there is a crazed killer on the loose,...

The slasher film. Across several decades, one of the most dominating sub-genres in the entire horror sphere. From the beginning days of the formative slashers in the 1970s, all the way to today’s reboots, sequels, and fresh originals. From classic icons such as Michael Myers to modern killers like Mia Goth’s Pearl. The slasher truly lives forever, proving it’s always in fashion.
One of the most unique slashers is a movie that just celebrated its 40th anniversary. A movie that spawned a series of films written and directed entirely by women, a rarity in the genre.
That movie? The Slumber Party Massacre.
Released in 1982, The Slumber Party Massacre started life as an on-the-nose horror movie that would essentially be a send-up of genre tropes. This original screenplay was titled Sleepless Nights and was authored by famed feminist writer Rita Mae Brown as a parody of the often dominated slasher film genre,...

Danishka Esterhazy is helping to usher in another era of horror.
First, she took a beloved '70s children's program and turned it into a tongue-in-cheek nightmare with The Banana Splits Movie. Now she's at it again, taking what is widely known as the first feminist horror movie, Slumber Party Massacre, giving it the 21st-century treatment.
Why she did it is simple. "I am a fan of '80s horror and I am a fan of slasher movies. They were definitely the kind of movie I'd watch at sleepovers with my friends as a teen girl."
In 1982, Rita Mae Brown wrote Slumber Party Massacre, which Amy Holden Jones (The Resident) directed. Both were working with some of the industry's top behind-the-screen talent, and their intent was to shine a light on the misogynistic qualities of horror.
Danishka says it was a little later in life that she watched the original franchise,...

It’s a common misconception that women are only in horror films to scream. Not so – the genre has put women front and centre for decades, showing men a trick or two about conquering evil. In the terrifying new online seance chiller Host, a group of female friends are left to deal with a malevolent spirit, while the sole male cast member runs shrieking into the night. Here’s a collection of some of the best fright flicks featuring fantastic female ensemble casts. Ladies, your time is now!

There’s a distinct daughters-of-Carol-Clover vibe in the new remake of Black Christmas that hits you almost immediately — a kind of knowingness with a serrated edge that’s different from the meta-winks of something like Scream, or the in-joke camaraderie that happens when horror franchise entries start getting into the double digits. It’s not just that its creators are familiar with the 1974 original, a proto-slasher flick involving a sorority house, a masked killer, the holiday season and a body count. (This vintage exploitation gem is also the answer to...

In Pixelvision, everybody’s beautiful, everybody’s a hero.—Joe Militus, “Discontinued: The Story of the Pxl-2000” (1997)11Hamlet (2000)First announced at the American International Toy Fair in 1987, toy company Fisher-Price released the Pxl-2000 at a starting price range of $100 to $200. The camcorder—known colloquially as the "Pixelvision"—was initially developed2 as one of many “toys for older children.” But because of its high costs and ambiguous target audience—too demanding for some kids; too juvenile for others—the Pixelvision waned in sales until Fisher-Price eventually halted its production in 19893. The discontinuation, however, did not circumscribe Pixelvision’s noticeable surge in popularity among zealous Dv aficionados. But for those in need of affordable and portable film equipment, the firmware of Pixelvision was both a blessing and a curse: Requiring only a cheap audiocassette tape, the lightweight device records eleven to fifteen minutes of grainy black-and-white footage at a time; but each frame is ruptured by inextricable,...

Female horror fans are hardly unicorns. Quite the opposite – we go to the movies to get scared, often in greater numbers than men. Female horror directors aren't mythical beings either, even though it can sometimes feel this way. But in fact, the last few years have seen an exciting wave of horror films helmed by women who haven't merely joined the rank-and-file as encouraging statistics. Instead, movies like Jennifer Kent's The Babadook or Karyn Kusama's The Invitation have helped elevate the genre by opening it up to stories that unsettle audiences in new,...

I sometimes get in the mood for fun summer B horror movies and this is certainly one of them type of flicks. I have seen this movie a few times in the past. At a sleepover you might tell scary stories to spook your guests, but you wouldn’t want anything scary to crash your party — especially if that scary “something” was a crazy man with a power drill and no intentions of using it for home improvement projects. This violent party crasher is featured in Amy Holden Jones’ 1982 directorial debut, The Slumber Party Massacre.

In this 1982 ode to Roger Corman’s B films, a group of high school girls have a slumber party that quickly turns deadly. Director Amy Holden Jones pays homage to the exploitation films of the time, using her own feminist perspective (along with screenwriter Rita Mae Brown’s) to add parody and satire to the entire production. The humor was lost on audiences when it was initially released, but its eventual cult status has led to multiple sequels and this Blu-ray rerelease.

February's Women in Horror Month is a great opportunity to unite female horror enthusiasts, journalists, actors, directors, screenwriters, producers, and the like. But that doesn’t mean that the efforts of the women who fight for their place in the industry shouldn’t also be recognized throughout the year. There are many talented female directors, screenwriters, producers, and actors working in the production of genre films on a daily basis, but they don’t always receive the same level of recognition as their male counterparts. We hope for a time when Women in Horror Month will no longer be necessary, but we have a long way to go before that becomes a reality. So, to show our appreciation for the hardworking women who toil away in the horror genre, we'd like to spotlight five of our favorite female-helmed horror films. Chained Jennifer Chambers Lynch (Boxing Helena) turned out a restrained...

Today's spotlight falls on a belated sequel to the early slasher film The Slumber Party Massacre. The 1982 original is a lower-profile affair, but does have its share of fans, and is one of very few entries the slasher field to be directed by a woman (Amy Holden Jones), which is noteworthy for a genre often accused of misogynistic tendencies. Based on a screenplay by feminist author Rita Mae Brown, the film was originally intended to parody the slasher formula, playing with the idea of the murder weapon as a phallic object – very phallic, in fact, as the killer opted for an extremely large power drill – but most of the satire was removed by the producers. The drill whirs to life again in this 1987 follow-up, produced by genre icon Roger Corman and once again helmed by a female director (Deborah Brock). For this outing, the producers were obviously more influenced by...

The definition of a slasher film varies depending on who you ask, but in general, it contains several specific traits that feed into the genre’s formula. Author Vera Dika rather strictly defines the sub-genre in her book Games of Terror by only including films made between 1978 and 1984. In other words, she saw it as a movement. When someone describes Brick, they don’t define it as a noir, but instead neo-noir . In other words, it’s a modern motion picture that prominently utilizes elements of film noir, but with updated themes, content, style, visual elements or media that were absent in those from the 1940s and 1950s. So does one consider Scream a slasher film or a neo-slasher, or simply put, a modern slasher?
Some consider Thirteen Women to be the earliest slasher – released all the way back in 1932. Personally I think that is rubbish. Thirteen Women is more like Desperate Housewives on sedatives.

Grades: The Slumber Party Massacre: B; The Slumber Party Massacre 2: C+; The Slumber Party Massacre 3: C-; Cannibal Girls: C+ For almost as long as there have been horror movies, there have been filmmakers commenting on horror movies, either by mocking them outright, or by subverting the conventions. In theory, 1982’s The Slumber Party Massacre does the latter. Based on a screenplay by novelist Rita Mae Brown—who intended to skewer the slasher film by amping up its clichés—Spm was re-written and directed by Amy Jones, who played the material much straighter than Brown intended. Fuquay-varina - It was a speedy two days with major stars dropping into my neighborhood.
On a Thursday night the man who made predicted FedEx arrived at a Durham library. Mister McFeely (David Newell) still fits in his Speedy Delivery uniform and hat as he greeted Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood fans of all ages. Most of the ages were under seven. Luckily I had brought along a little kid in order not to stick out.
McFeely was at the end of a weeklong tour around the state to touch base with the kids. Lately whenever any star of kid focused tv shows comes to town, it’s part of some over inflated media spectacular stage show at the sports arena. There’s singing, dancing, indoor fireworks and motorcycle stunts meant to dazzle a three year old. Plus there’s a $18 convenience charge on the tickets. But this was not McFeely’s type of entertainment.

Let’s go back to the 1980′s. Ronald Reagan was president. Our economy was in the shitter. AIDS was making news as a real threat to society. And the slasher film was making tons of money in the box office and at home with a new fangled contraption called a VHS player. Halloween. Friday the 13th. Nightmare on Elm Street. Those are but a few names that get thrown around when people speak about the slasher genre. But one series that tends to get forgotten or mixed up in the mess is The Slumber Party Massacre Trilogy. And that’s a sad fact, considering these films are loved by many horror fans and thanks to Shout! Factory, they are newly remastered and available for the world to buy now. But do they still match up to their brethren in the genre?

Next Tuesday Shout! Factory unleashes yet another winning package that we never thought we'd see. That's right, kids. The Slumber Party Massacre collection is heading our way, and we have a look at it for you!
From the Press Release:
Stay up all night with the films that put a new twist on the slasher genre. Along with Halloween (1978), Friday the 13th (1980) and Prom Night (1980), Slumber Party Massacre (1982) helped define the slasher film ethos of the 1980s. Put together by first-time director Amy Holden from a script, titled “Don’t Open the Door," by feminist author Rita Mae Brown (Rubyfruit Jungle), the film was an immediate hit for Roger Corman's New World Pictures, eventually spawning two sequels.
Here, for the first time, all three Slumber Party Massacres are brought together in one DVD set, due to drill its way into your heart on October 5, 2010 from Shout! Factory, in association with New Horizons Picture Corporation.

The Slumber Party Massacre films, all three directed by women, will now finally be available on re-release with killer bonus features. You can also get a cool Spm pillow case, too!
Don’t Open the Door was a script written by feminist author Rita Mae Brown (she wrote Rubyfruit Jungle, which appears in Tish's bedroom in the first film) as a response to the recent slasher films that created modern slasher stereotypes like Halloween (1978), and parodied the obvious cliches by setting a slumber party in the path of a deranged lunatic killer wielding a phallic electric drill. Roger Corman, who gave many women horror directors their first shot, allowed first-time director Amy Holden to have a go at it. The film was an immediate hit for Roger Corman's New World Pictures, eventually spawning two sequels that were subsequently more ridiculous. It also spawned the career of actress Brinke Stevens,...

Slumber Party Massacre
Stars: Michelle Michaels , Robin Stille, Michael Villella, Brinke Stevens, Debra Deliso | Written by Rita Mae Brown | Directed by Amy Holden Jones
A mass murdering maniac escapes from prison and, armed with a power drill, begins to decimate the nubile high schoolers of a Los Angeles suburb during their slumber party. Thats it. Why mess with perfection and add a convuluted plot?
This is the 80’s remember, when the slasher movie was king and all you needed to make a film was a bunch of nubile girls willing to strip off on camera, some ok-ish special effects, and someone to play the killer… No need forany real motivation, no need for any back story, just as long as there’s gore-a-plenty!
Initially intended as a parody of the slasher genre, scripted by lesbian-feminist author and activist Rita Mae Brown (Rubyfruit Jungle) and directed by Amy Holden Jones (who...

May 3rd 2010 sees the release on DVD of a second batch of classic cult movies from the vaults of legendary film producer Roger Corman, representing the second half of The Roger Corman Collection, courtesy of Metrodome’s budget DVD label, In2Film.
The five new releases are Ron Howard’s directorial debut feature, Grand Theft Auto, 80s slasher, Slumber Party Massacre, Roger Corman’s own directorial contributions to the 1950s sci-fi genre, Not Of This Earth and Attack Of The Crab Monsters, and the David Carradine-starring, post-apocalyptic action-adventure, Deathsport.
Co-starring, co-written by and directed by Oscar winning director Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon; The Da Vinci Code; A Beautiful Mind) and featuring his Happy Days co-star Marion Ross, the amiable screwball comedy, Grand Theft Auto, is part road movie, part chase movie and part destruction derby. Why do women like horror movies? At first, I found the question in general to be offensive, especially when posed by the usually respectable New York Times.
“Why wouldn’t women like horror movies?” I thought, ready to take on whoever had a problem with ladies who dig slasher flicks.
Then I read further — and wondered why I only seem to like horror movies of the '60s and '70s variety, and why when forced to sit through trailers for movies like Saw be it 1, 2,3 or 4 — I cringe. It isn’t that women can’t handle the blood, violence and suspense — it’s that modern horror films are exploitative, pornographic and void of character, and filmmakers having seemingly no interest in attracting female viewers.
Cue Diablo Cody’s new film Jennifer’s Body, lauded by some and dismissed by others as an attempt for a woman to take back...

In the 1970s and ‘80s, something funny happened on the way to the grindhouse. With women still sorely under-represented in the directorial ranks of the "New Hollywood," a number of women began working as writer-directors in the low-budget world of exploitation films.
