Two days after the news broke that American Idol vocal coach Debra Byrd had died, one of her most successful students has paid tribute.
Jennifer Hudson took to social media and wrote that she was “heartbroken” at the news of Byrd’s passing.
“She encouraged and supported us from the very beginning ! I am so grateful for everything she taught us,” wrote the Season 3 standout. “She will be dearly missed, but her legacy lives on through the music of countless artists she influenced during her lifetime.”
That list of artists stretches far beyond the reality competition’s stages. In addition to hopefuls, Byrd’s students included Grammy winners, recording artists, actors, musicians and Broadway stars. She worked closely with Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia, Jennifer Hudson, Bob Dylan, Barry Manilow and many others.

It was a blast from the past in many ways Wednesday night on American Idol. Season 7 winner David Cook returned to mentor the top 8 finalists on ’80s night, a theme the rocker absolutely crushed during his season with “Hello” by Lionel Richie and later “Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson. Cook brought a needed new perspective for the contestants on how to perform on live television and what it’s like to be going through the crazy process. EW caught up with Cook on the phone after the performances to ask what it was like to be back at Idol.

Debra Byrd, who has been an American Idol vocal coach since the show's first season, is out as live performance episodes begin next week with the top 24, who were revealed last night, and who will be joined by one additional male, because that's the kind of shocking twist that will help defeat The Voice. How can anyone complain about an American Idol episode that packed in performances from more than 50 singers, a heaping portion of maniacal/delightful bitchery courtesy of “The Vocal Coach from Hell,” and a genuine emotional breakdown from soundbite-spewing cool kid Heejun Han? Actually, if you’ll give me a second, I’m sure I can come up with something — Season 10 Vegas survivor Hollie Cavanagh once again getting the seen-but-never-heard treatment? one of the strongest vocalists in the competition getting burned by a last-minute judges’ switcheroo? the continued existence of Randy Jackson on my TV screen? — but sometimes, you have to...

Adam Lambert is ready to show you a different side of himself. Right after the singer exploded on the scene as the runner-up on American Idol’s season 8, it seemed you couldn’t open a magazine or turn on the radio without hearing about Lambert. (Not, of course, that we’re complaining.) He was everywhere: the Idol tour, rocking the house with his performances, and stirring up controversy on the American Music Awards and in photo spreads.
But recently, our favorite glam rocker has seemed quiet. But Glamberts should fear not: that’s all about to change. The singer went...

How quickly did Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina choose their first songs for the American Idol performance finale? Were they familiar with the songs their own Idols picked for them? Michael Becker / Fox Haley Reinhart performs in front of the judges on “American Idol” on May 18.
Haley Reinhart has chosen some songs lately that made the judges cringe. For others already sent packing earlier, it was clear it was their song choice that cost them a shot at the Idol. Last night, Haley got very risky with Led Zeppelin, though it seemed to pay off with the judges.
So as we get down to the wire on Idol, song choice is more important than ever.

His time on "Idol" was plagued by a pesky penchant for singing with his eyes closed, which prevented viewers from completely connecting with his emotional performances (and, let's face it, his boyish good looks).

What was the most unnecessary moment during last night’s American Idol? The nominees are:
• Paul being forced to sing Pink’s “So What” in a group number with the rest of the fallen. Would anyone have minded if it had just been a ladies’ number/reason to bring back Pia? I don’t think so. That’s what I thought it was until Paul walked out.
• Randy Jackson’s diva-gloved preface to Jacob: “Just to help you, because I think critique really helps everyone really, me, all of us… ” You know how little critiquing Randy has actually done this...

Of the many, many, many differences between Season 10 and Season 9 of American Idol, one of the most striking to me is how suddenly we’re all deeply interested in the dating lives of the contestants this year. As I made my way to my seat in the Idoldome last night, I overheard one woman say with great concern and earnestness, “I just don’t know how he met Nikki Reed.” And the two women with pleasant perfume seated next to me — one a big Haley fan, the other a big Casey fan, with the clear impression that there was a...

Who do you send home after a night as strong as that? (Okay, my answer would be Paul, but even his performance tickled my typically Paul-phobic soul.) As I was exiting the Idoldome, that was the question on everyone’s mind. One female audience member summed it up best: “Usually there are one or two performances that don’t quite work, but tonight was different.”
Tonight was different. For one thing, the crowd was rowdier than I’ve ever seen it, frequently violating Idol Commandment No. 7: Thou shall not yell during the sacred post-song banter between Ryan Seacrest and a contestant.

American Idol stage manager Debbie Williams switches on her microphone and trumpets the night's marching orders to a packed-to-the-rafters crowd of more than 800: "There's gonna be stuff you agree with, stuff you disagree with. Let us hear you! Spit it out!"
But Williams doesn't really need to pump up this crowd. Inside a massive studio at CBS Television City in the heart of Los Angeles, this season's electrifying new crop of singers, along with the unexpected, lightning-in-a-bottle chemistry between judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, has created so many good vibrations that the infectious, light-hearted energy has already super-charged the audience. Tears washed away, Top 12 of "American Idol" this season posed on the blue carpet with smiles just a couple hours after some of them were axed. Crystal Bowersox, Tim Urban, Paige Miles, Casey James and the other eight contestants walked their first photo call at Los Angeles' Industry nightclub before heading inside the venue to celebrate the achievement.
Crystal talked to USA Today about being judges' early favorite. She said, "It's flattering but it's still up for grabs. It's up to the American public. It's not Simon [Cowell]." Meanwhile, Andrew Garcia talked about him constantly being criticized for not living up to his Hollywood Week performance. "Right now, it's like, 'Straight Up', get over it," he said.
