- Born exactly one week after The Velvet Underground bandmate Lou Reed.
- Married fashion designer Betsey Johnson in 1968; the wedding was delayed when Cale came down with hepatitis and had to go to the hospital. Photos of the wedding later appeared in "Vogue" magazine.
