It's been nearly 60 years since Julie Andrews first sang about how the hills of Austria were alive with the sound of music, but "The Sound of Music" remains a beloved cinematic treasure. Vividly colorful, unabashedly musical, and anchored by Andrews' performance, the story of Maria the would-be nun, and her small army of new wards — the Von Trapp children — is still rewatched and referenced often across the world.
With more than half a century of retrospect, "The Sound of Music" has also become a bit of a historical document: much of the film's cast and crew has since passed away, with the exception of Andrews herself and five of the seven actors who embodied the Von Trapp kids. Heather Menzies (Louisa) and Charmian Carr (Liesl) have both passed away in recent years, as has Christopher Plummer, who embodied family patriarch...

The 1965 version of The Sound Of Music practically raised several generations, and its phenomenal cast had a lot to do with that. In the lineup was none other than Charmian Carr, the American actress who played Liesl, the eldest von Trapp daughter. She’s no longer “16 going on 17” but she engraved those lines in the memories of everyone who’s seen the film. Sadly, Carr passed away on September 17, 2016, at the age of 73, and it was a sad bit of news altogether. However, she left a legacy worth honoring and exploring. With that in mind, here’s...

Sharon Tate rode into the 1960s on an All-American missile and defined the decade in a perfect frame.
“Honey, let's face it; all I know how to do is take off my clothes,” Jennifer North said in the film Valley of the Dolls, deflating the image of the sexual revolution and one of the decade’s most cinematic sex symbols. But that’s because Sharon Tate, the wife of director Roman Polanski and the hypnotic witch in the under-appreciated cult horror thriller Eye of the Devil, had a deeper knowledge. The actor and model encapsulated both the look and attitudes of ‘60s youth, from her Thea Porter-designed micro-mini dress to her coppertone tan. The Jurassic Park sequel – or reboot, as it's basically the same story with a slightly different twist – has surpassed Marvel's Joss Whedon-directed all-star superhero flick The Avengers, which broke box office records back in 2012. Of course, "officially" just ain't what it used to be – like, in the days before The Fall. So you wisely ask, "But which movie has actually sold the most tickets?" After all, that's the true measure of a film's popularity. Well, that's a tough one to answer without the studios providing accurate, precise numbers. And that's not about to happen. It always...

How do you solve a problem like people hatin' on Maria? Carrie Underwood was "brave" to take on the role of the aspiring nun-turned-governess-turned singing stepmother of seven in last night's NBC special, The Sound of Music Live!, but that doesn't mean she should have, according to Kym Karath, who played little Gretl Von Trapp in the original film with Julie Andrews. Julie Andrews remains silent on the issue, but her fictional stepdaughters from 1965's The Sound Music film watched NBC's The Sound of Music Live last night with Vanity Fair and they were not impressed. The eldest, Charmian Carr, a.k.a. Liesl "I don't need a governess" von Trapp and the youngest, Kym Karath, a.k.a. Gretl "I've got a sore finger" von Trapp remain close — ever since the elder carried the little one up the stairs during "So Long, Farewell." So what did they have to say about the Carrie Underwood–helmed remake? They said some of the things we all were thinking (and tweeting): "She is not a very good actress," said Carr. "They’re trying to merge the movie and the musical and it doesn’t really make sense," added Karath. And perhaps the most upsetting difference? During the thunderstorm bedroom scene: "This actually hurts.

On Monday, July 30th, diehard fans of the beloved and iconic musical film .The Sound of Music. were treated to a screening of a newly restored 70mm print at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The highly anticipated screening was part of AMPAS. Last 70Mm Film Festival.
Lucky fans and invited guests were treated to a Q&A segment prior to the film with special guests Charmian Carr (Liesl) and Kym Karath (Gretl). Joining them was Fred Bronson, author of The Sound of Music Family Scrapbook, the inside story of the beloved movie musical, revealed by the actors who starred as the Von Trapp children.
I spoke to Kym Karath (Gretl) before the screening and she was as lovely as can be. When I asked her about her feelings towards the film after more than 45 years, she said that more than anything else, she has lovingly embraced it.

Hagerstown, Md. — Agathe von Trapp, a member of the musical family whose escape from Nazi-occupied Austria was the basis for "The Sound of Music," has died, a longtime friend said Wednesday.
Von Trapp, 97, died Tuesday at a hospice in the Baltimore suburb of Towson after suffering congestive heart failure in November, said Mary Louise Kane. Kane and von Trapp lived together for five decades and ran a kindergarten at the Sacred Heart Catholic parish in nearby Glyndon until 1993.
Von Trapp was the oldest daughter of Austrian naval Capt. Georg Ritter von Trapp. His seven children by his first wife, Agathe Whitehead von Trapp, were the basis for the singing family in the 1959 play and 1965 film, which won the Oscar for best picture.
The widowed captain had three more children with his second wife, Maria Augusta Kutschera. They performed together as the Trapp Family Singers.

Hearing about the passing of Agathe von Trapp, the eldest daughter of the musical family that inspired The Sound of Music who died Tuesday at age 97, made me remember the evening a few years back when, while watching the film for about the 100th time, I realized I no longer related to Liesl (Charmian Carr), the 16-going-on-17 character based on the real life woman. Instead, I was identifying with Julie Andrews’ Maria (and worrying that I wouldn’t be enough woman for Capt. Von Trapp or to lead his seven children on a mountain escape from the Nazis). It’s...

Agathe von Trapp (pictured above left, middle left with her sister Maria), the oldest daughter of the family portrayed in the 1965 blockbuster "The Sound of Music," has died at the age of 97 of congestive heart failure, reports the Montreal Gazette.
According to the Baltimore Sun, Agathe hadn't performed with her siblings for several decades and had shied away from the fame the movie brought her family because she never felt the movie was an accurate portrayal.
There were minor inconsistencies, like making Liesl, the character based on Agathe (Charmian Carr, pictured above, right), the oldest child (in reality, Agathe had an older brother). Agathe also did not have a telegram delivery boyfriend who later became a Nazi.
But the dramatization of those aspects did not bother her as much as the portrayal of her father, Capt. von Trapp, whom she always insisted was loving and kind, not cold and distant...

In 1966, composer Stephen Sondheim collaborated with playwright James Goldman on a musical adaptation of a John Collier short story about a community of outsiders who pose as department-store mannequins by day and follow their own eccentric rules by night. The show, Evening Primrose, aired on the experimental anthology series ABC’s Stage 67, with Anthony Perkins playing a young poet who learns he isn’t the first to have the bright idea of retreating from the real world, while Charmian Carr (a.k.a. Liesl von Trapp in The Sound Of Music) plays a woman who’s been lost ...

Paths Of Glory (Criterion) Stanley Kubrick’s 1957 antiwar classic put him on the map as a major filmmaker. Kirk Douglas stars in a true story about a French officer in Ww I who locks horns with the military’s top brass after his men are court-martialed for failing to carry out an obvious suicide mission. A perfect film, across the board, with fine support from George Macready as one of the most despicable martinet’s ever captured on film, Ralph Meeker, and Adolphe Menjou, all oily charm as a conniving General. Also available on Blu-ray disc. The hills are alive with the sound of Blu-ray. The Sound of Music has never looked better. Fox lavishes on the special features as well making this a must have release. The studio is on a roll with this fantastic release. Novice nun Maria (Julie Andrews) is always running afoul of her superiors since she is more of a free spirit. The head nun (Peggy Wood) of the abbey is sent word that a governess is needed for the von Trapp family and she recommends that Maria take up the position. Maria finds that the widowed Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) runs his home with an shipshape attitude, yet his seven children, Liesl (Charmian Carr), Friedrich (Nicholas...

Actors who played von Trapp family brought together for first time in 45 years on Oprah Winfrey's TV show
The moment was heralded with a single blast of a whistle with which Christopher Plummer used to call the children, just as he did in the film 45 years ago. And with it Plummer, Julie Andrews, and the seven von Trapp children were reunited for the first time since the premier of the world's most successful big screen musical, The Sound of Music.
The nine actors had never come together since, in large part because of the grouchiness of Plummer. As he explained to Oprah Winfrey, who orchestrated the reunion for her television show, he had harboured serious doubts about appearing in the film from the beginning.
Then aged 34, and an accomplished actor on stage and screen, Plummer had been underwhelmed by the part of Captain von Trapp, the Austrian single-parent who...

Growing up, a visit to my grandparents house typically consisted of repeatedly watching Singin’ in the Rain or The Sound of Music. (Those were two of the three VHS tapes they owned; the third was Pretty Woman.) There’s a special place in my heart for the sounds of Captain Von Trapp’s “Edelweiss” (how do you not cry?), and I may have reenacted “So Long, Farewell,” on more than one occasion, so it was great to hear that the Von Trapp family would be reuniting on Oprah for the first time since the filming of their iconic movie musical.

"The Sound of Music" cast reunited for the first time in 45 years on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" Thursday (Oct. 28) and it was immensely sentimental and satisfying for fans of the movie.
From the production stills decorating the set to the montages of both on-screen and behind-the-scenes footage to Christopher Plummer bringing the actors who played the Von Trapp children to the stage using the infamous whistle, the "Sound of Music" reunion was everything we hoped it would be.
Julie Andrews relayed a story of how the helicopter that filmed her famous opening sequence on the Austrian hill kept circling around behind her to reset for the next take and knocking her to the ground.
Plummer laughed about his rebel ways during filming, how he would cavort around the Austrian countryside, getting to know the local bars quite well. In fact, his on-screen daughter Charmian Carr (Liesl) says she learned from Plummer "how to drink,...

Here’s the thing about Oprah Winfrey. She knows how to suckpeople in. Clearly she’s been building her army of followers for decades—wooingthem with free cars and trips to Australia, tugging at their heartstrings withhuman tragedy, and luring them into her book club.
We admit, we’ve been holdouts—never willing to put her on our daily DVR list. But Oprah rises above the other hosts for one reason—tenacity. Slowly butsurely she captures the stragglers who have managed to elude her net.
So, how is Op finally converting the Passionistas to herfold? How else? Musicals. Today, Lady O is reuniting the cast of The Sound of Music, bringing themtogether for the first time in 45 years.
It may not be surprising that the Von Trapp children willall be present and accounted for (answering to each personalized whistle sound wehope). After all, Oprah doesn’t call...

Twentieth Century Fox is packing quite a marketing whallop behind the 45th anniversary of The Sound Of Music. (Gee, what's left to do for the 50th milestone?)
