Alan Carter approached Mag.Pi in Studio City at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 23, carrying a bouquet of white hydrangeas wrapped in brown paper and polka-dotted cellophane. At 62 years old, Carter had never purchased flowers for someone he’s never met, but he was stunned this week to learn that the owner of the lifestyle boutique, Laura Ann Carleton, or Lauri to friends, was shot to death on Friday during a dispute with a man over a Pride flag outside her second Mag.Pi location near Lake Arrowhead.
“It gutted me, and I heard on the news that Mrs. Carleton also owned a store in Studio City,” said Carter. “I don’t know anyone in her family and I’ve never been in the store, though I’ve driven past it probably a hundred times. I can’t get to Lake Arrowhead, so I came here. I’m on a fixed income and really,...

It has been 11 years since “The Voice” first premiered on NBC and became one of the most-watched shows on television. After 21 seasons, 15 superstar coaches and seven Emmys from 69 nominations, the reality TV series finally took a break for the spring 2022 cycle. Before returning next fall, host and producer Carson Daly, executive producer Audrey Morrissey, director Alan Carter, production designer Zeya Maurer, supervising casting director Michelle McNulty and lighting designer Oscar Dominguez came together to discuss the reality competition juggernaut with Gold Derby senior editor Denton Davidson in this roundtable panel for Warner Bros. television. Watch the lively discussion above.
“The backbone of the show are the people that you never see on TV,” says Daly. “We have the greatest crew and staff. You don’t win four Emmys [for Best Reality Competition Program], you do not last the landscape of primetime television on a major network at the highest of level for this many years...

Less than a month away from its airdate, CMA Awards producers have put an end to the speculation among country fans about who would host the 2021 show by announcing Luke Bryan would take over duties for the show, to be broadcast live Nov. 10 on ABC.
This marks the third year in a row that the network and the Country Music Association have changed up the hosting approach, after Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood had an 11-year run, from 2008 to 2018. Two years ago, Underwood returned to co-host with Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton, and last year McEntire came back to share the stage with Darius Rucker. Earlier this month. McEntire told Billboard she was not coming back “to my knowledge.”
For the CMA and ABC, putting Bryan in the role is a virtually no-risk gambit, as the singer not only remains one of the most reliable ticket-sellers in the industry but...

The future is indeed female. NBC announced its inaugural class for their Alternative Directors Program — and they are all women.
The program is the industry’s first directing pipeline program for unscripted shows. The new initiative takes a step toward equal representation behind the scenes on alternative series — a part of the industry that falls short on inclusion despite the numerous unscripted shows on TV. The program gives experienced female and ethnically diverse directors access to expand their repertoire of alternative formats and complex directing styles with the ultimate goal of opening the door to future projects.
The seven program finalists and the celebrated directors who will serve as their mentors are: Madeline Fuste, Sarah De La O, Sharon Everitt, Carrie Havel, Annetta Marion (Making It), Cari Townsend and Lizz Zanin.
The inaugural class are experienced directors who have previously worked on acclaimed unscripted content including Oprah’s Master Class, Dancing with the Stars, Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, and The View as well as sports events such as the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games, and concert films for platinum-selling recording artists.
The Alternative Directors Program was launched in May 2018 as part of NBC’s talent infusion programs (NBC Tips). The program gives female and ethnically diverse directors with at least one directing credit the opportunity to shadow a seasoned director on an NBC show over several weeks including prep, production, and post. The initiative will feed the pipeline for unscripted directors on NBC as well as shows produced by Universal Television Alternative Studio. The network’s ultimate goal is to extend the industry’s pool of experienced diverse directors who can work in various alternative formats.
The initiative is spearheaded by Meredith Ahr who was recently announced as NBC’s new President, Alternative and Reality Group, and Karen Horne, NBC’s Senior Vice President, Programming Talent Development & Inclusion, who oversees the company’s robust onscreen and behind-the-camera diversity efforts.

NBC is expanding its efforts to find diverse unscripted directors. The network today announced the Alternative Directors Program, the industry’s first directing initiative for unscripted programming.

Five directors will be chosen for the program, in which they will shadow a seasoned director over several weeks, including prep, production and post. NBC’s participating shows for the program’s inaugural year are America’s Got Talent, Hollywood Game Night, The Voice, The Wall and World of Dance. Directors who will serve as mentors are Alan Carter, Ivan Dudynsky, Russell Norman and Alex Rudzinski.
Beginning today, eligible directors can apply for the program’s initial 2018-19 season at NBCUniTIPS.

Los Angeles – On August 17, web writer-producers working in television and radio news, and promotions at CBS studios in the Los Angeles area ratified their first-ever contract with CBS. The three-year agreement negotiated by the Wgaw includes increases in minimums and wages, secures grievance procedures, paid vacations, holiday pay, and health and pension benefits. The agreement also provides language outlining job duties and working conditions, as well as discharge and layoff protections with negotiated severance pay. “We are proud to represent these talented professionals who write news, promotions, and create special projects for new media at CBS,” said Wgaw Representative Lynda Whittaker, who worked closely with the web writer-producers over the past two years. “They showed perseverance and guts in their fight for justice and respect. While the process may have been long, the victory is sweet.” “I come from a long line of strong union members in my family, and...

I have to be honest- the life of a blogger and film reviewer is not always what it’s cut out to be. For every golden opportunity to talk about film, and pass on your enthusiasm about certain projects, there are also numerous times when it is difficult to offer anything other than miserable criticism when a film fails to inspire you in any way possible. On the surface of it, it might be easy to see Jack Falls as one such film- filmed cheaply and marketed as a comic noir in the British gangster genre- but to do so would be extremely unfair.
The third and final chapter in the ‘Jack Trilogy’ from writer/director Paul Tanter, Jack Falls completes the story of Jack Adleth (Simon Phillips), a former undercover police officer who returns to London on a mission of revenge against those who sought to kill him. The...

The WGA West has scored another small victory: organizing more new-media writers at CBS studios.
Fifteen news, promo, and sports writers who produce content for CBS' Internet operations in the Los Angeles area unanimously voted to seek representation by the WGAw in a tally conducted by the National Labor Relations Board. The writers work at Kcal/Kcbs, CBS TV City, and CBS Radio/Knx and will begin to negotiate a contract with their employer.
Wgaw union rep Lynda Whittaker and organizer Laura Watson worked with shop stewards Kathy Kiernan, Scott Gutman and Brett Galde to organize the writers.
"This is good news for new-media writers," said Wgaw president Patric Verrone, who has pushed to organize nontraditional media during the four years he's been in office. "As more and more news, sports and promotional content is distributed on the Internet, it is essential that its writers win respect for their work...
