Something Wicked this way comes, again.
Broadway in Hollywood said today that the Tony-winning smash Broadway musical will return to the Pantages Theatre next year, with its limited engagement starting in December 2024. The organization usually reveals the Hollywood Boulevard venue’s entire season every February, but it got a broom-flying start on 2024-25.
The show is based on Gregory Maguire 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which followed up L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its classic 1939 MGM film. Featuring songs including “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “For Good,” it looks at what happened in the Land of Oz from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman born with emerald-green skin who is smart, fiery, misunderstood and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry...

Broadway’s first post-Tony-nomination casualty has arrived: the shut-out Bob Fosse’s Dancin’ will play its final performance on Sunday, May 14.
Producer Joey Parnes made the announcement today. When it closes, the updated revival of the 1978 musical will have played 17 preview performances and 65 regular performances.
The show received no Tony Award nominations this morning.
The musical, directed by Wayne Cilento and featuring reimagined stagings of original Fosse choreography, opened to mostly tepid reviews on March 19. The show has struggled at the box office, and last week filled fewer than half the available seats at the Music Box Theatre, grossing just $386,970.
In addition to Cilento, who appeared as a dancer in the original production, the revival’s creative team included scenic design by Robert Brill; costume design by Reid Bartelme and Harriet Jung; lighting design by David Grill; sound design by Peter Hylenski; and video design by Finn Ross. Musical numbers...

Bob Fosse’s Dancin’ is the first casualty of the Tony Awards.
The revival of the musical revue, which opened on Broadway on March 23, announced Tuesday evening that it would play its final performance at the Music Box Theatre on May 14. The closing notice comes after the show did not receive any Tony Award nominations Tuesday morning and has seen waning box office numbers.
Dancin’ is directed by Wayne Cilento, one of the stars of the original Broadway production, and produced in cooperation with Nicole Fosse, daughter of the legendary choreographer. The cast features more than 20 dancers, who are expanding on classic Fosse numbers, such as Mr. Bojangles and Sing Sing Sing, in the vein of the original 1978 revue.
The show recently saw a downturn box office. In the most recent week, which ended April 30, Dancin’ played to 48 percent capacity and grossed $386,970, below a typical running cost for a show of this size.

Another busy Broadway season has drawn to a close and Tony nominations are just days away. David Buchanan joins me in a rousing slugfest to sift through what musicals will be remembered at the 2023 Tony Awards. The sheer volume of quality productions and striking performances in contention makes for exciting races that are challenging to predict. Watch our full video slugfest above.
We begin by examining the potential nominees for Best Musical, which is possibly the only straightforward race in this discussion. David and I are certain that “Kimberly Akimbo,” “Some Like it Hot,” “& Juliet,” and “Shucked” should feel secure about their impending nominations. But that final spot is totally “up for grabs.”
I’m fairly certain that the “grandness” of “New York, New York,” with its lush design elements and swoon-worthy dancing, will help the show attain a spot in the lineup. Plus, the show should benefit from the...

“I tried to reference all of the stimulus in his head that led him to create amazing pieces of theater,” details director Wayne Cilento on honoring the legendary choreography of Bob Fosse. Cilento has crafted the first ever Broadway revival of “Dancin’,” but the show now comes appropriately billed as “Bob Fosse’s Dancin’” since the director was keen to go beyond what was presented in the original incarnation. ”I wanted to show his scope,” explains Cilento, ”I wanted to do more than what he presented in 1978.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Cilento starred in the original Broadway production of “Dancin’” and earned a Tony nomination for Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance. Cilento was not a Fosse dancer when he booked the show (he jokes that he had previously auditioned for “Chicago” but was “cut immediately”). Bob Fosse’s Dancin’ will return to Broadway this spring, 41 years after the original hit production left the stage.
The musical revival will begin previews at The Music Box Theatre on Thursday, March 2, 2023, with opening night set for Sunday, March 19. Producer Joey Parnes made the announcement today.
The production will be directed by Tony Award winner Wayne Cilento, a cast member of the original Broadway production, and produced in cooperation with Nicole Fosse.
The new staging, producers say, will be “utterly reimagined for the 21st century.” The revival, they said in the announcement, “brims with a level of warmth, emotion, and color seldom seen in modern interpretations of Fosse’s influential style and features some of his most inventive and rarely performed choreography.”
The cast will include Yeman Brown, Peter John Chursin, Dylis Croman, Jovan Dansberry, Karli Dinardo , Tony d’Alelio, Aydin Eyikan, Manuel Herrera, Gabriel Hyman, Kolton Krouse, Mattie Love,...

Bob Fosse’s Dancin’, the hit musical revue originally directed and choreographed by the legendary Fosse that ran on Broadway from 1978 to 1982, is planning a return: Producer Joey Parnes announced today that he’ll bring a revival, directed by Wayne Cilento, to Broadway in the 2022-23 season.
“Bob Fosse created the original production as a tribute to dance, but we are approaching this production as a celebration of Bob himself – both the person and the artist,” said Cilento, who was featured in the original company. “We plan on delivering a Dancin’ that is every bit as eclectic and uplifting as the original, full of all its inherent edginess, but is also relevant to our current era.
“Every creative decision will be made through that lens to meet this moment,” Cilento continued, “from our casting of a new generation of principal dancers that reflects the vibrancy of our city to our...

New York — A musical inspired by the music of Tupac Shakur hopes to bring gangsta rap to a Broadway stage.
A workshop of "Holler If Ya Hear Me" is currently under way in New York under the direction of Kenny Leon, who helmed the Broadway hits "Fences" and "The Mountaintop." The new musical sets Shakur's music to an original story and hopes to be ready for the 2013-2014 Broadway season.
Producers said Monday the musical is set in a Midwestern industrial city during present time and tells the story of two childhood friends "as they struggle to reconcile the challenges and realities of their daily lives with their hopes, dreams and ambitions."
Rapper and actor Shakur, who had multimillion-seller albums like "2Pacalypse Now" and "All Eyez on Me," was killed in September 1996 as he sat in a car in Las Vegas. He was 25 and known for his raw lyrics that...

Picture me rollin’…up to a Broadway theater for a new musical based on the work of the late actor/rapper Tupac Shakur. Currently workshopping in New York City for a possible Broadway run later this season, Holler If Ya Hear Me features the songs of Shakur — but it isn’t a bio-drama of the controversial performer who was gunned down in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in 1996. The dancers who inspired A Chorus Line are fuming because they won't receive royalties from the forthcoming Broadway revival of the musical. A Chorus Line has grossed $280 million worldwide, and the original production was the longest-running show in Broadway history. Its origins lie in a late-night gathering at a rehearsal studio in Manhattan in January 1974, where choreographer Michael Bennett invited 19 of Broadway's best dancers to talk about their lives. The dancers spent more than 12 hours sharing their experiences, and these memories form the basis of the show. Bennett later arranged to split a portion of the box office takings and royalties with them, but these royalty agreements apply only to the original production - and not a revival. Wayne Cilento, one of the dancers, claims, "When we were young and stupid, we kind of signed our lives away, and they exploited that. We were the authors of the show and we should have been paid accordingly." John Breglio, executor of Bennett's estate, says the dancers will have to negotiate with the heirs to the Bennett estate if they wish to claim royalties from the new production.
