When Toby Keith died of cancer on Feb. 5 at age 62, the country world mourned the loss of one of its biggest stars. Notching 20 No. 1 songs on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and the Country Airplay chart, Keith was an uncompromising, often controversial figure who followed his own arrow and remained a consistent presence in the genre for three decades.
So when the 2024 CMT Music Awards took over the Moody Center in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, it went without saying that the planned tribute to Keith would be one of the night’s highlights.
Led by Keith’s longtime friends Brooks & Dunn and Sammy Hagar as well as Lainey Wilson, whom Keith mentored, the tribute was supported by Keith’s longtime backing band.
Baseball legend Roger Clemens introduced the performance, calling Keith “a true friend and patriot.” Clemens noted that in recent years, as Keith was “battling that damn C-word,...

Toby Keith, whose history with the CMT Music Awards goes back to having co-hosted the earliest incarnation of the show, will get his due in the wake of his recent death, as an all-star salute is planned for Keith on Sunday night’s three-hour CBS telecast.
The tribute will feature performances by one of the hottest figures in country music, Lainey Wilson, along with his fellow industry veterans Brooks & Dunn, whose Ronnie Dunn is a fellow Okie. Rocker Sammy Hagar, who featured Keith on an episode of his TV series “Rock & Roll Road Trip” in 2022, will join the lineup paying homage.
Set for what’s being billed as special appearances saluting the late singer are Lukas Nelson and Roger Clemens. Nelson’s father, Willie, had a smash duet with Keith, “Beer for My Horses.” Baseball legend Roger Clemens’ friendship with Keith included the singer inducting the ballplayer into the Houston Sports Hall of Fame.

Randy Wilkins connects with Derek Jeter, subject of his seven-part ESPN documentary series, The Captain, on a few levels.
For starters, Wilkins is a lifelong New York Yankees fan, and Jeter was the linchpin of five World Series championships captured by the team between 1996 and 2009. In his filmmaking career, Wilkins also can relate. While he wasn’t a teen-ager like Jeter when he got his big break, getting the chance to tell the story of his hero resulted from a surprise endorsement from Spike Lee, who is an executive producer of the series.
“In June 2020, he called me to check up on me,” Wilkins recalled in an interview. “He asked me who my favorite Yankee was, just out of the blue. I said, ‘Well, Derek Jeter.’ I was very confused as to why he was asking me that. And the next thing he said was, ‘Derek Jeter wants to do...

Randy Wilkins, who directed the upcoming Derek Jeter ESPN Films documentary series “The Captain,” had one word to describe the topic he had to drag out of the stoic Hall-of-Fame shortstop: “Alex.”
New York Yankees fans in attendance at the June 12 Tribeca Festival Q&a following the first episode’s premiere got a kick out of that one. Jeter, who sat calmly on the Bmcc Tribeca Performing Arts Center stage beside Wilkins, perhaps did not. Wilkins, of course, was referring to Alex Rodriguez, an all-time-great Major League Baseball infielder in his own right. Jeter and A-Rod famously did not get along after the Yankees signed Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers star Rodriguez (whom many baseball pundits believed to be the superior shortstop).
Jeter held his literal ground on the left side of the infield: A-Rod switched positions to third base, and what had been an easy friendship forged at All-Star Games was never the same.

"Without a doubt, he was the most intimidating pitcher in the history of the game." Utopia has revealed an official trailer for a sports biopic documentary titled Facing Nolan, profiling the baseball legend Nolan Ryan. This already premiered at the 2022 SXSW Film Festival last month, and will show in theaters on May 24th for a special event. In the world of Major League Baseball no one has created a mythology like Nolan Ryan. Told from the point of view of the hitters who faced him (which is a great setup for a doc about him) and the teammates who revered him, Facing Nolan is the definitive documentary film about a Texas legend. Directed by Bradley Jackson the film features new interviews with Nolan Ryan, President George W. Bush, Craig Biggio, Steve Buechele, George Brett, Rod Carew, Roger Clemens, Tom Grieve, Tom House, Randy Johnson, Pete Rose, Ivan Rodriguez, Bobby Valentine,...

Featuring a lovable goof named Rory and characters that talk at a breakneck clip about topics ranging from commonly misused idioms to Paul Newman’s sexuality, “Straight Up” is basically a gay “Gilmore Girls” in indie film form. The debut feature from James Sweeney (who also stars), the film is Todd, who uses his weekly therapy sessions to talk himself in circles about his ambivalent feelings about sex. Like any well-heeled neurotic gay man, Todd (Sweeney) knows a lot about a lot of things — he just doesn’t know himself. As such, “Straight Up” is meticulous in building its hyper-stylized aesthetic, but doesn’t have much to say about the human condition.
As its title suggests, “Straight Up” doesn’t exactly fit into the label of “queer film.” Though Todd has been pegged as gay since he was a kid, bodily fluids unnerve him, a rather thin explanation for his...

Vivid released "Baseball Mistress" in 2010 after McCready's appearance on "Celebrity Rehab." In addition to ceasing distribution, company exec Steve Hirsch says the video will be pulled from Vivid's website. There are no plans at this time to redistribute the video. Well, what do you know? A classy move from a porn company.

Heber Springs, Ark. — Mindy McCready threatened suicide after losing custody of her sons earlier this month, yet she was allowed to leave a court-ordered drug rehabilitation program just days before she apparently killed herself at her Arkansas home, her ex-boyfriend said Monday.
Billy McKnight, who was in a long, stormy relationship with McCready and is the father of her oldest child, Zander, said the 37-year-old mother of two stayed in the substance abuse treatment center for about 18 hours before she was allowed to walk free.
McCready died Sunday at her home in Heber Springs, a vacation community about 65 miles north of Little Rock. She was found dead on the front porch, where her longtime boyfriend, musician David Wilson, died last month of a gunshot wound to the head. Authorities are investigating both deaths as suicides but haven't determined an official cause of death.

Kissimmee, Fla. — Former baseball great Roger Clemens is calling the death of country star Mindy McCready "sad news."
Clemens, now a special instructor with the Houston Astros, handed reporters a written statement Monday at the team's spring training camp in Kissimmee, Fla. It says he'd heard "she was trying to get peace and direction in her life." He said McCready and her manager/agent were "extremely nice" the "few times" he saw her.
McCready made headlines in April 2008 when she claimed a longtime relationship with Clemens. Published reports at the time said she met the pitcher at a Florida karaoke bar when she was 15 and he was 28 and married. Clemens has denied the relationship.
Authorities say McCready died Sunday at her home in Heber Springs, Ark., of an apparent suicide.

Heber Springs, Ark. — Mindy McCready, who hit the top of the country charts before personal problems sidetracked her career, died Sunday in Arkansas in an apparent suicide. She was 37.
The Cleburne County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that McCready was found dead at a residence in Heber Springs from what appears to be a single, self-inflicted gunshot to the head. An autopsy is pending.
It wasn't the first suicide attempt for the troubled singer, whose list of problems only continued to grow in 2013.
McCready entered court-ordered rehab earlier this month after her father told a judge she was no longer taking care of herself or her children and was abusing drugs and alcohol. Her sons were put in foster care at the time, but it's not clear where Zander and Zayne were at the time of McCready's suicide.

Despite being baseball's all-time hits leader, Pete Rose knows what it's like to be shut out of the sport's Hall of Fame - and the icon says a few of this year's snubbed players should have been let into the sacred institution.
On Friday morning, Rose visited Access Hollywood Live to promote his new TLC reality series "Pete Rose: Hits & Mrs.," and he weighed in on this week's decision to keep modern day superstars like Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens out of the Hall of Fame over allegations of using performance enhancing drugs during their playing days.

The New York Times welcomed, well, no one to the Baseball Hall of Fame on Thursday. The paper printed a mostly blank front page in its sports section under the headline "Welcome to Cooperstown" after the Baseball Writers Association of America announced on Wednesday that not a single candidate on the 2013 ballot -- including Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens -- received enough votes to join the ranks of the sport's elite players. It marked the first time since 1996 that no living players on the regular ballot will be inducted. Several...

He's the most decorated Olympian of all time. He's barely 27 years old, and just took home a few more medals to add to his collection. So, when Michael Phelps says he's retiring, does he really mean it?
"I'm done. I don't know if people really believe me, but I am actually finished. I'm retiring," the Olympic swimming legend tells CNN in a recent interview.
"I'm done," he repeats.
Phelps's loyal legion of fans, however, can cling to a long list of fickle fellow legends for hope. Sugar Ray Leonard announced his retirement in '82, then again in '84, then returned to beat Marvin Hagler in '87 and finally threw his last punch in 1997 - a full fifteen years after his "retirement." Perhaps the closest comparison to Phelps would be Michael Jordan, the greatest basketball player of all time, who quit basketball for baseball in '92, returned in '94 and then...

"It's late June," begins John Rocker's first column for World Net Daily, and it is late June, so he's good so far,
and the dog days have been beating down for the past several weeks as the season is already lethargically dragging. The only thing that seems to be languishing at a more apathetic pace is the current game that's ongoing. It’s the 17th inning and the score has been tied at 5 for what seems like nine hours. The last base hit occurred at approximately 1:25 a.m., which was four innings ago. There hasn't been a base runner in over an hour. This game has turned into nothing more than a giant effort in futility. If I had known today was going to turn out like this, I would have stayed back at the hotel.*
I'm pretty sure nobody ever asked Rocker to leave the hotel in the first place.

Roger Clemens has been found guilty in the court of public opinion and honestly, that’s all that really matters. But for those that want the facts, Roger Clemens was actually found not guilty on all six charges in his perjury trial. Most casual fans probably don’t even know what he was on trial for. They know it had something to do with using steroids or performance enhancing drugs (Ped), but he was on trial for lying to Congress. Which is hypocritical in my opinion with how much Congress lies to the American public, but this isn’t the place for that rant.
Clemens was accused of perjury, making false statements, and obstructing Congress during his 2008 testimony about PEDs. The star witness for the government is publicly perceived to be as slimy as Clemens. Personal trainer Brian McNamee is linked to numerous alleged cheaters, and various drugs.

And it's ABC with the scoop: Marco Rubio is not being vetted for Mitt Romney's Vice Presidential slot.
It's been two months since Romney named Beth Myers to head his Veep search team, and Rubio has not been asked to fill out any paperwork or turn over any financial documents, the first step in the vetting process (hopefully there's now a foreign policy test, too).
Rubio was on every political observer's shortlist, and got endorsements from statemates like Jeb Bush. Rubio is a young and energetic lawmaker who would have made a strong conservative foil to Romney, of whom the Gop is still rightfully suspicious. Rubio is expected to be the Gop's best bet for making inroads to the Latino vote, which they're in danger of losing permanently (or not), and could have helped Romney mitigate the damage of his primary positions on immigration, especially as Rubio has claimed...

Roger Clemens has been found not guilty of lying to Congress in 2008 when he denied using steroids and Hgh, TMZ is reporting. The former major league starting pitcher was acquitted on all six chargers against him, including two counts of perjury, three counts of making false statements and one count of obstructing Congress. Pitcher Roger Clemens was found not guilty on Monday (June 18) of all charges in a Federal perjury case against him. The government claimed Clemens had made false statements and obstructed Congress for denying (in 2008) that he had ever taken steroids. reports The Associated Press.
In a nationally televised hearing, Clemens said that his former strength coach Brian McNamee had injected him with just vitamins and the painkiller lidocaine. However, McNamee told the same committee that he injected Clemens with human growth hormone on several occasions.
Clemens' defense argued that the government's case was weak since prosecutors had only McNamee as an eye witness to the steroid use.
The baseballer originally faced the same charges in July 2011, but the case was declared a mistrial.

Roger Clemens was found Not Guilty of lying to Congress when he denied using steroids and Hgh back in 2008. In fact, the former Cy Young winner was acquitted on all 6 charges -- including 2 counts of perjury, 3 counts of making false statements and 1 count of obstructing Congress.
