While we’ve seen Dracula on the big screen in recent films including Renfield, The Last Voyage of the Demeter and this year’s Abigail, director Robert Eggers is going in a bit of a different direction with his next movie. He’s getting set to unleash Nosferatu, a new take on the classic film that predates the Bela Lugosi Dracula.
Bill Skarsgård will be playing the title character (also known as Count Orlok) for Robert Eggers, and he teases his top secret performance in a new chat with Esquire this week.
We say “top secret,” of course, because the movie’s marketing hasn’t yet revealed the look of the character. But it sounds like Skarsgård dove scary deep into the role. For starters, Esquire explains that the actor “worked with an opera singer to bring his voice down to its lowest possible pitch,” and “spent three to six...

CinemaCon attendees Wednesday got a first look at Focus Features’ second film with Robert Eggers, Nosferatu, a dark and gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her which causes untold horror in its wake.
Introducing the footage, Focus chairman Peter Kujawski said, “This ain’t your father’s Nosferatu” and promised it will give “new meaning to the term Christmas feast when we open on December 25.”
In the footage, we see the terror and hysteria rampant in the village as various townsfolk shriek, “He is coming” after the young woman calls to him seemingly in a nighttime trance. “My dreams grow darker,” she says, and asks Willem Dafoe’s Professor Von Franz, “Does evil come from within us, or from beyond?”

Bill Skarsgård has become undead bloodsucker Count Orlok for the big screen.
Skarsgård leads Robert Eggers’ long-awaited “Nosferatu,” a reimagining of F. W. Murnau’s 1922 film. Skarsgård plays the titular villain, with Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, the source of Orlok’s obsession. As Orlok tries to seduce her soul, Ellen’s husband Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) fights to save his wife from turning to the dark side.
Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski said the film “definitely ain’t your father’s ‘Nosferatu,’ and [Eggers] will definitely bring new meaning to the phrase ‘Christmas feast.’”
The footage Focus premiered at CinemaCon (though not released online today) was as daring and intense as any film Eggers has made, complete with some chilling black and white sequences, a man biting the head off a pigeon, streets teeming with rats, and rooms engulfed in flames, not to mention a truly deafening, bone chilling score.

“Dìdi,” a coming-of-age drama that won the U.S. dramatic audience award at Sundance, has sold to Focus Features. The semi-autobiographical film was written, produced and directed by Sean Wang in his feature debut.
The film follows a 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy in the throes of an awkward adolescence, as he enjoys the last month of summer before high school begins. He experiences the pangs of first love, becomes friends with some skaters (after promising to make videos of them), fights with his older sister and gets a hard-earned understanding of his mom. It is set in 2008, when MySpace was still a thing and TikTok had yet to explode.
Wang says he hopes that audiences will be able to see a version of themselves in the film, which stars Izaac Wang as the filmmaker’s cinematic alter-ego and Joan Chen (“The Last Emperor”) as his onscreen mother.

This latest shot gives us another look at Nicholas Hoult’s character in the movie, while again teasing the appearance of Bill Skarsgård as classic horror icon Count Orlok.
Eggers tells Total Film in their 2024 Preview issue, “Bill lost a tremendous amount of weight. He’s so transformed in every aspect that I don’t know if people will give him the credit. You can’t detect any Bill here. He worked with an opera coach to lower his voice an octave. I think people are going to think we treated it digitally, but that’s his performance.”

Murnau’s 1922 film, which was later remade by Werner Herzog in 1979. “Nosferatu” stars Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, a woman whose soul is seduced by the undead bloodsucker Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård). Ellen’s husband Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) fights to save his wife in the Gothic tale.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe also star.
Focus Features will distribute “Nosferatu” stateside on December 25, 2024. Director Eggers previously collaborated with Focus for the 2022 Viking epic “The Northman.”
“The audacious filmmaking of Robert Eggers is always a gift for fans,” Peter Kujawski, chairman of Focus Features, said, “and we can promise that his Nosferatu is planning quite the Christmas feast.”

Eight years have passed since we first heard that The Witch writer/director Robert Eggers was going to be taking the helm of a remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here), but filming didn’t begin until earlier this year. During a recent interview with Empire magazine, Eggers said that it was a good thing that he wasn’t able to make Nosferatu earlier, because even after making The Lighthouse and The Northman, this movie still pushed him “beyond his capabilities”. Which is exactly what he was going for.
Eggers said, “I’m trying to go beyond what I’m capable of. As always, it was a difficult shoot. Last night we were doing a scene on a ship with a lot of rain and waves, and the rain deflector, which tries to blow rain out of the lens, was breaking down and fogging. I spent...

Eight years after we first heard that The Witch writer/director Robert Eggers was going to be taking the helm of a remake of F.W. Prague Reporter has shared the news that filming on Nosferatu took place for three months in Prague and wrapped on May 19th.

Nicholas Hoult can be seen on the big screen in this weekend’s Dracula horror comedy Renfield (read our review Here), where he plays the title character – and since making that film, he has also been hard at work on another vampire movie: writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here). Speaking with Total Film, Hoult said he was convinced to take a role in Eggers’ Nosferatu because he believes the film will be “really special”.
Hoult told Total Film, “Rob has wanted to make Nosferatu since he was eight years old and he did a play of it as well when he was in high school, so it’s been a passion project of his for a long time. Honestly, I wasn’t looking to go back into the vampire world again, but his style and tone are just so completely the...

In news that seems both incredibly obvious and shocking at the same time, Willem Dafoe is boarding Robert Eggers' long-gestating remake of "Nosferatu." Deadline confirmed the casting in an exclusive report, although they did not detail his potential role. What we know, however, is that he won't be playing Count Orlok, the harrowing vampire brought to life by Max Schreck in the F.W. Murnau classic. That distinction will be handled by another classic Weird Guy™, Bill Skarsgärd. Don't worry, though — Dafoe got his chance to don the makeup in the meta-dramedy "Shadow of the Vampire."
Even if he isn't playing Orlok, Dafoe seems tailor-made for a project like this, especially with Eggers. The two first collaborated on 2019's "The Lighthouse" and reunited with the criminally underrated "The Northman" in 2022. Based on this relationship, it probably shouldn't be a surprise that he at least knew of Eggers' desire to remake the film,...

After working together on “The Lighthouse” and “The Northman,” Willem Dafoe and Robert Eggers are looking to team up for a third time. Dafoe is in talks to join Eggers’ next film, his previously announced “Nosferatu,” sources have told IndieWire.
Inspired by the iconic 1922 German silent film from F.W. Murnau, which itself was based heavily on Bram Stoker’s definitive vampire novel “Dracula,” Eggers’ film sees Bill Skarsgård play the central role of Count Orlok, an 18th-century Transylvanian vampire, made famous in the original film by Max Schreck. The film follows Orlok as he obsessively stalks a young woman (Lily-Rose Depp) across Germany, bringing horror and bloodshed with him.
Dafoe’s potential role is being kept under wraps, but in addition to the two leads, he would also join the already-cast Nicholas Hoult. Notably, Dafoe played Schreck in “Shadow of the Vampire,” a 2000 horror comedy about the making of the original “Nosferatu.

Exclusive: Robert Eggers and his The Lighthouse star Willem Dafoe have found their next project on which to collaborate, with Dafoe in talks to join Eggers’ Nosferatu at Focus Features. Lily Rose-Depp, Bill Skarsgard and Nicholas Hoult already are on board, with Eggers writing and directing. Jeff Robinov, John Graham, Eggers, Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus are producing.
In the new reimagining, Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman (Depp) in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire (Skarsgard) who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him. Focus had no comment on the project. It is unknown who Dafoe will be playing.
Not only does the project reunite Eggers and Dafoe, who worked together on The Lighthouse and The Northman, the project is a full-circle moment for Dafoe, who earned an Oscar nomination playing the Nosferatu creature in Shadow of the Vampire.

Being known as the man behind "The Witch" would already cement you as a notable voice in horror, but to immediately follow it up with "The Lighthouse" and "The Northman" shows a filmmaker who won't stop, and thankfully has no plans to. Whichever way you look at it, Robert Eggers just keeps on winning. All three of his films have been period pieces, both intimate and massive in scope, showing how capable he is at transitioning from one to the other.
When Eggers took the leap to work with a major studio outside of A24, "The Northman" was a critically-acclaimed success, but the box office appeal wasn't there to recuperate its 90 million budget. This was bad news for all sorts of reasons, but the most devastating was the unlikely chance of getting his passion project off the ground. It was right around 2019 that Eggers expressed interest in his own adaptation of "Nosferatu,...

One of the more famously troubled projects in recent memory, Robert Eggers’ re-imagining of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 classic “Nosferatu,” is finally happening, this time with a new backer, TheWrap can confirm.
Focus Features is now behind the project, with Jeff Robinov, John Graham, Robert Eggers, Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus producing. Reports suggest Lily-Rose Depp will play the role originally earmarked for Anya Taylor-Joy, with scream king Bill Skarsgård playing the ancient vampire (this was the role last imagined for Harry Styles).
“Nosferatu” has been on Eggers’ docket since right after his debut feature, 2015’s “The Witch,” which remains one of the very best horror films in recent memory. That didn’t end up happening, but he did return to the project after completing work on 2019’s “The Lighthouse.” Apparently that version, for Studio 8, came incredibly close to production, with sets being built and members of the crew had already relocated to begin filming.

Two years ago, it was announced that The Witch (watch it Here) writer/director Robert Eggers and star Anya Taylor-Joy would be teaming up again on a remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch that Here) as soon as a window of opportunity opened up in Taylor-Joy’s busy schedule. They found that window of opportunity last fall, but then the project crumbled when Harry Styles, who had been cast as the Thomas Hutter character, dropped out. Now Nosferatu is back on, but Deadline reports that Taylor-Joy is too busy to fit the movie back into her schedule. So Lily-Rose Depp (Yoga Hosers) will now be the female lead Ellen, and Bill Skarsgard (It) is set to play the title character.
Earlier this year, Eggers said he feared that the ghost of F.W. Murnau was trying to block him from making Nosferatu, since the project had crumbled twice.

When Chris Columbus signed on to direct “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” he agreed to adhere to J.K. Rowling’s mandate that only British actors star in the big-budget fantasy adaptation. The “Brits only” rule famously resulted in Robin Williams being rejected from the film. As casting director Janet Hirshenson once told HuffPo, “The ‘only British’ rule was so important that Robin Williams was even turned down to play Hagrid…Robin had called [Columbus] because he really wanted to be in the movie, but it was a British-only edict, and once he said no to Robin, he wasn’t going to say yes to anybody else, that’s for sure. It couldn’t be.”
One American that did happen to land a part in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” was Eleanor Columbus, daughter of director Chris Columbus. Speaking to Insider this week, Columbus remembered how his daughter was allowed...
