We're living in a veritable golden age of bizarre reality TV competitions, dear readers. In 2017, children will frantically prepare BBQ cuisine; hoofers will boogie for J-Lo's amusement; and contestants will attempt to impress Jamie Foxx by outsmarting an app. Meanwhile, Shonda Rhimes takes on the aftermath of Romeo and Juliet, Bernie Madoff gets what-for courtesy of Robert De Niro and an 1980s artifact springs back to life in all of its permed glory. Oh, and there's a talking dog in the mix as well. Oh and did we mention that...

Dark Angel improves, but despite Joanne Froggatt’s efforts, not enough to offer more than a tabloid retelling of a shocking tale…

As we’d been warned they would, the tables turn for serial poisoner Mary Ann Cotton in part two of ITV’s Dark Angel. Her social ascendency is thwarted by suspicion and the fragility of life for the Victorian poor. People around her are dropping like flies, and not all of them due to her arsenic-laced tea.
Perversely, it was only when things began to spin out of control for Cotton that the drama started to find its grip on her character. At least, that’s when a sense of her finally emerged as more than a...

Life was tough for the nineteenth century poor. If the insalubrious lodgings and back-breaking work didn’t get you, Typhus would. Or Gastric Fever. Or childbirth, if you were unlucky enough to have a functioning womb and had a husband that wouldn’t “whip it out” before he was done.

Don't expect Joanne Froggatt to show up to tonight's Emmy Awards in her Downton Abbey maid's uniform.
The actress, who plays Anna the lady's maid, has said that she will miss the show but not what she's had to wear over its six series.
14 things that happen in every Downton Abbey episode
"I used to love wearing black at home but I've noticed I don't so much since Downton," she told The Telegraph's Stella magazine.
However, Froggatt did admit there was an advantage to having a limited wardrobe on the show, and not just because she could lie down at lunchtime without fear of ruining a delicate and very expensive dress.
"We barely had to do any costume fittings," she explained. "We'd get two dresses at the beginning of the series and that would be that for six months of shooting. Whereas Michelle, Laura and the others were going in...

There has been a lot of talk about a potential Downton Abbey movie after the series comes to an end at Christmas, and some of its stars are definitely up for a return.
Joanne Froggatt and Phyllis Logan - who play Anna Bates and Mrs Hughes in the ITV period drama - told Digital Spy and others that they will be first in the queue if Julian Fellowes decides to bring it back.
6 spoiler-free teasers for Downton Abbey's series 6 premiere
"I definitely would, it would be lovely," said Logan. "Logistically, there's so many of us. Just working everybody's part in it, and where they would be. Several people are going on to other jobs, and who knows what will happen after that.
"Corralling us all is tricky enough for the best of times, but I would be up for it, certainly."
Froggatt added: "Me too, if we can get everybody together again.

Joanne Froggatt has begun filming her first project since wrapping up her time in Downton Abbey earlier this month.
The actress will play serial murderer Mary Ann Cotton in ITV's upcoming Victorian drama Dark Angel, which has started shooting in North Yorkshire and County Durham.
Froggatt's character sounds like the complete opposite to Downton's dependable maid Anna Bates, as she has a secret history of adultery, bigamy, fraud and murder.
With each killing, Cotton increases her social and financial standing in Victorian society, while no-one suspects that she could be behind the horrendous crimes. So don't mess with her.
Dark Angel will also star Alun Armstrong, Jonas Armstrong, Laura Morgan, Sam Hoare, Emma Fielding and Penny Layden.
ITV will soon announce the airdates for the two-part series.
Froggatt will return for the final series of Downton Abbey next month, which will conclude with its Christmas special on Christmas Day.

Joanne Froggatt is set to play serial killer Mary Ann Cotton in 'Dark Angel'. The 34-year-old actress - who won a Golden Globe award for playing lady maid Anna Bates in 'Downton Abbey' - has been cast as the lead in the ITV Victorian drama based on the real-life story of the 19th-century serial killer who, by the time she was executed in 1873, was believed to have killed three husbands, eight of her own children, seven stepchildren and her mother. Speaking to the Daily Mail newspaper, an executive of 'Dark Angel' said: ''But she's not just an evil bitch. Yes, she...

Golden Globe winner Joanne Froggatt will go from playing kind-hearted, if often unfortunate, Anna Bates to portraying real-life Victorian age serial killer Mary Ann Cotton. In her first post-Downton Abbey gig, Froggatt will begin shooting Dark Angel in August for ITV. The two-part drama is produced by Line Of Duty‘s World Productions and is based on the true story of Cotton, who used adultery, bigamy, fraud and murder to “better” herself socially and financially before…...

Joanne Froggatt will lead a brand new ITV drama based on the true story of serial killer Mary Ann Cotton.
The Downton Abbey star will play the Victorian poisoner in the two-part series.
At first a loving wife and mother, Mary Ann struggles with poverty and caring for her ailing husband, and soon becomes ruthless to pursue her desires and a better life.
Mary Ann's methods leave no visible scars on the victims, allowing her to remain unsuspected for a long time in a Victorian society unable to believe that a woman would be capable of such crimes.
Through adultery, bigamy, fraud and murder, Mary Ann makes a better life for herself but runs the risk of eventually being caught.
ITV's controller of drama Victoria Fea said: "Dark Angel is an extraordinary and chilling true story.
"We're delighted to have an actress of Joanne Froggatt's calibre in the lead role.
