Neil Gaiman’s fantasy novel Anansi Boys is heading to the sequential art world of comics.
The 2005 novel, a New York Times best-seller that won the Locus and British Fantasy Awards, is being adapted by Dark Horse Comics, which has set screenwriter and comics author Marc Bernardin to pen what will be an eight-issue miniseries.
Shawn Martinbrough, perhaps best known as the longtime artist of the Robert Kirkman title Thief of Thieves as well as Marvel’s Luke Cage Noir, is drawing the book, which will have colors by Chris Sotomayor and letters by Jim Campbell. The first issue is due to hit stores June 26.
The novel told the travails of “Fat” Charlie Nancy, who leads a boring life as a boring Londoner until he discovers two things: that his recently deceased father was, in fact, Anansi, the trickster god of African folklore, and that he has a twin brother he’s never met.

Thirty years ago this month, Milestone Media launched and the comics world listened. Hardware #1 from legendary creators Dwayne McDuffie and Denys Cowan was the company’s first book in February 1993. It was nothing less than a statement of purpose, a book about a Black genius fighting his white industrialist boss (who’s secretly a crime lord) to get pay and recognition for his inventions.
But it wasn’t until the Static Shock cartoon launched on TV in 2004 that Milestone made a broad cultural impact. “For so many of us in that generation, Static [Shock], the cartoon, was the door that opened a lot of things up,” Jordan Clark, a member of the Milestone Initiative’s inaugural class, tells Den of Geek magazine.

Denys Cowan’s comics career spans decades. Perhaps most famous for his work on mainline DC characters like Batman and his “mature readers” take on The Question with Denny O’Neil, Cowan is also one of the architects of Milestone Media, the trailblazing company that grew out of the classic ‘90s comics publisher, Milestone Comics. While the original run of Milestone only lasted a few years, it spawned a beloved animated series (Static Shock), and is now a key imprint at DC Comics, who have recently revived much of the key characters and titles for new tales for a modern audience.

Simonson like Neal adams was great in his day, but clearly cuz of old age, the hands are probably much more worn and weary. Not like frank Miller who was ALWays a terrible artist, who just became unbearable
Walt Simonson posted the above tweet on both his Twitter and Facebook pages.
I asked my old friend for the Twitter account of the writer. Walt, the cool mofo that he is, got a laugh out of the post but didn’t give me the info cause he’s a classy guy.
I could not let that comment stand. I had to respond. Why? The kids are why. Back when lions, tigers, and bears were the spirit animals of America, that post wouldn’t have mattered.

Comic-book characters like Static, Icon and Hardware once broke open new opportunities for minorities to gain representation in mainstream super-hero titles. Now the company that published their exploits hopes to bring new creators — and advertising opportunities — into the mix.
WarnerMedia will through its DC comics unit launch the Milestone Initiative, a bid to identify new writers and artists with diverse background in the comic book industry. The effort is a nod to Milestone Media, the now iconic line of comics that was devised by a group of Black creators in the early 1990s and published with DC. Ally Financial, a digitally-focused financial-services company, will support the program with advertising and sponsorships.
“Super hero and comic culture is massive and has a broad reach, so I think we are going to get a really big universe of people that will really be into this,” says Andrea Brimmer, Ally’s chief marketing and public relations officer,...

John Paul Leon was part of an elite group, the Bad Boy Studio Mentor program. That program’s goal is to help people of color gain entry into comic books and related businesses.
It does not stop there—the main goal is to pay it forward.

Randy McKinnon, who broke out writing Disney+’s football drama “Safety,” will write the “Static Shock” script for DC Films and Warner Bros., according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Michael B. Jordan and Reginald Hudlin will produce the project, which was first revealed during the DC FanDome event last August.
“One of the things we’re really excited about, we really want to live up to the name of the company, Milestone Media,” Hudlin said at FanDome. “When we spoke to Jim [Lee] about reviving the Milestone line, we said, ‘Look, we all know this has been a hit comic book and hit animated series. It’s time to expand back into all those areas and then some.’ So we’re in serious conversations about, as we’re launching the comic book series, developing the ‘Static Shock’ movie. That will be a theatrical feature film.”

For Black History Month, DC Comics has the hottest ticket in the comic book world… The Return of Milestone Media.
That happens today.
The in-store books will launch in April, but new and veteran fans can head over to DC’s website and find some digital gold. I’m not a part of the new Milestone, but who knows, perhaps one day I will return if they buy me something pretty. Denys Cowan’s brilliant idea is about to make history all over again, with Reggie Hudlin and Derek Dingle.
Thursday was Clarence Avant’s birthday. Clarence is known as the Black Godfather; he’s also hands down the most powerful man in music. He turned 90 yesterday and is just as compelling as when he was 30.
Fun Fact: Clarence had the winning bid when the original art for Hardware #1 was auctioned off.

DC’s Milestone revival kicked off at FanDome earlier this month, with the promise of new and old material returning the beloved characters to comics. And at the second stage of FanDome, they followed through, with the release of Milestone Returns #0, free to read only during the digital convention. Now, they’re fulfilling another stage of that promise: Hardware and Icon are being published digitally for the first time ever.
This week saw the release of Hardware: The Man in the Machine, the first volume of Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan and J.J. Birch’s origin/revenge tale about genius inventor Curt Metcalf, on ComiXology and other digital platforms. And over the next two weeks, the first two volumes of Icon (A Hero’s Welcome and The Mothership Connection), from M.D. Bright and McDuffie, will go on sale online as well.

As part of day two of DC’s big comic con pandemic substitute, DC Comics has made a metric ton of comics available for free online. Included in that passel of books are several from Milestone Comics – some classic issues of Icon, Hardware, and Static Shock, along with Milestone Returns #0, the kickoff to the big return of the Black-owned comic company slated for February. And there’s a pretty big surprise contained within.
The book is written by Reggie Hudlin and Greg Pak, with art from DC Publisher Jim Lee, Brothers Bond artist Ryan Benjamin; Teen Titans artist Khoi Pham; and Milestone co-founder Denys Cowan. Each artist gets a different introduction, and Benjamin and Hudlin rework Static’s origin to be a touch more timely.
In this new Milestone, Static gets his powers by being teargassed at a Black Lives Matter protest. On its face, this is a fairly big shift from his comics origin.

A movie based on DC Comics’ “Static Shock” is being put into development, filmmaker Reginald Hudlin said at DC Fandome on Saturday.
“One of the things we’re really excited about, we really want to live up to the name of the company, Milestone Media,” said Hudlin. “When we spoke to Jim [Lee] about reviving the Milestone line, we said ‘Look, we all know this has been a hit comic book and hit animated series. Created by Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis and Derek T. Dingle, African-American teenager Virgil Ovid Hawkins becomes a new kind of hero, named Static, after exposure to a radioactive chemical renders him capable of electromagnetic control and generation.

At a surprise DC Fandome panel, Milestone comics co-founder Denys Cowan announced that beloved 90s/2000s-era character Static Shock will be getting a new digital comic series in February of 2021 as part of a revival of 1993’s Milestone Media, under DC. Cowan made the announcement alongside DC Entertainment’s Co-Publisher Jim Lee, producer/director Reginald Hudlin, and Phil Lamarr, voice of Static Shock from the animated series. They announced the creation of “Earth-m,” which will be home to the “Dakota” universe of characters from Milestone and a slew of new characters.
“We couldn’t be more proud and excited about the opportunity to bring the ‘Dakota’ universe back to DC,” said Lee. “This is a huge step forward for us in bringing readers a more diversified lineup as part of the New DC Universe, and we’re anxiously looking forward to telling new stories that are socially and culturally impactful...

What would John Constantine, working class warlock and notorious scumbag who tends to end up doing the right thing anyway, do if billionaires with angel wings started hurtling from the sky and impaling themselves on church spires? He’d probably be pretty chill about it, to be honest, but we’re going to find out for sure in September’s Hellblazer: Rise and Fall, the new DC Black Label book from Tom Taylor and Darick Robertson.
Taylor and Robertson got their first crack at Constantine in 2019’s DCeased: A Good Day to Die, the tie in/expansion to the surprise hit zombie book, DCeased. But even before that, Robertson was no stranger to over-the-top gore played for righteous humor: he’s also a co-creator of The Boys, among many other books in his legendary career.

Dennis O’Neil, who wrote and/or edited Batman comics for 30 years, passed away Friday at the age of 81. As a writer, he was responsible for countless classic comics, both in Gotham City and around Marvel and DC. As an editor, he oversaw several industry-moving shifts and nurtured new talent that set high water marks for comics. And outside of comics, he wrote several novels, as well as some fan-favorite episodes of Batman: The Animated Series.
Nowhere is O’Neil’s influence on comics more evident than his influence on Frank Miller. O’Neil took over Batman comics in the 1970s, following the bright camp of the television series, and turned the Bat to the Dark Knight, adding edge and brood to a previously colorful character. O’Neil introduced Ra’s al-Ghul and Talia, Leslie Tompkins, Richard Dragon, and later Azrael to Gotham. He gave the world the Joker that...

In part one of this article, I asked what happened to that fun-loving silly bastard who lost his mind when he met Mickey Mouse at Disneyland?
This happened…
Sadness happened.
Sadness killed that pain in the ass lovable (Yeah Lovable) bastard. The grief felt over the loss of my mother, the end of my marriage, and friendship with Denys Cowan. Sadness over my inability to shield people I care about from my (then) undiagnosed bipolar behavior. Sadness helped along by my (then) undiagnosed severe depression.
Anger happened.
Anger over the constant ridicule from the friends of my ex-wife who’s elitist posture pissed me off to no end. Yet, for the most part, I let it go, which made me angrier. The insult from Milestone.
The criminal (Yes criminal) treatment from DC Comics. The two false racist arrests by Lapd. The seemingly purposeful attempts to distance me from my contributions...

I own a rare Japanese GI Joe figure which I was lucky enough to have signed by Don Levine GI Joes’s main creator. No idea what it’s worth but I know it’s pretty pricey— but I’d never sell it. Nor would I sell my prized Captain Action or any of the toys action figures or dolls I once collected.
I say once because the thrill of tracking down something I once had as a kid has left me.
That sucks.
There’s a huge TV in almost every room of my home and my studio. Each room has a gaming system hooked up in it. I have not played a video game in perhaps four years.
That really sucks.

The Eisner-bait comic, Strange Adventures, gets a new DC label to match its content.
Strange Adventures, the comic so hotly anticipated that DC is already making a show about it before it comes out, is in for some changes. The book, written by Tom King, with art from Mitch Gerads and Doc Shaner and letters from Clayton Cowles, is being upgraded from a regular DC comic to the company's prestige mature readers format, Black Label.
"As Strange Adventures was coming together, we had to take a step back and look at what made the most sense for the project," said the project's editor, Jamie S. Rich. "Since its tone and themes are more in the vein of Mister Miracle than, say, Tom King’s work on Batman, we decided that it made more sense to give Strange Adventures its own space, where Tom, Mitch, Doc, and Clayton...

Cue Scooby-Doo flashback…
I was attending Comic-Con in San Diego; it was the early 90’s, and I was a much different person than I am today. I was as they say Happy Go Lucky and Gay. Always upbeat and ready for whatever adventure awaited me.
Now?
The only word that still applies from Happy Go Lucky and Gay is gay. I’m still gay and Black. I’m a lesbian— I like women.
I’d just finished a panel when I was approached by this young white kid. And I do mean white. Without saying a word, this kid screamed baseball, apple pie, and Chevrolet. When he reached me, I said: “Look without a blood test, you’ll never be able to prove I’m your father.” I didn’t say that, but it’s true.
I actually said, “What’s up, Opie?” He just looked at me. “You’re a long way from Mayberry,...

Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiewicz take The Question back to Hub City, then back to the Old West, then to the Depression...
Denys Cowan is a living legend. He pencilled the original run of The Question with Dennis O’Neill, laying the groundwork for that character to become a fan favorite for three decades. He co-founded Milestone Media and gave the world Static and Hardware and all the other characters that make you shout in delight when they show up on Young Justice. Hell, he even drew the album art for Joe Biden’s favorite Wu Tang record.
Bill Sienkiewicz is also a living legend. He just dropped an art retrospective covering a portion of his work as the primary artist on books like Elektra: Assassin and New Mutants and Stray Toasters. But beyond his work as the primary artist on all-time classics, he’s also one of...

DC has a reboot of The Question on the way in 2020, and we've got the details here.
The Question: The Deaths of Vic Sage seems like a book designed in a lab to get me to buy it. It takes one of the most talented writers in comics today in Jeff Lemire, and teams him with the classic comics great who defined Vic Sage in Denys Cowan, and adds in literally the only inker in comics who gets people excited, Bill Sienkiewicz. That would have been more than enough to land it on a best of the year watchlist. But then these guys had to go and make the Question a cowboy, and now the hype is nearly unbearable.
DC released unlettered preview pages to the first issue of the new comic, and it's like walking into your redecorated childhood home to discover that it's an architectural masterpiece.

BizarroTV will be a mix of live action, animation, and puppetry bringing weirdness like Ambush Bug and Space Cabbie to DC Universe.
DC Universe announced a number of new projects at New York Comic Con, and the most stunning announcement is probably BizarroTV.

That's a very different approach to take with a superhero show, but not an entirely surprising one for the streaming service that birthed the absurdist masterpiece that was Doom Patrol.

Legendary penciller Denys Cowan returns to The Question in a new DC Black Label comic written by Jeff Lemire.
We've got a rule 'round the old Den. It's a simple one, easy to remember: If Denys Cowan is drawing something, buy it. If Bill Sienkiewicz is inking him, buy an extra copy. It doesn't matter if it's Deathstroke. Or a crossover that is ridiculous on its face, like Hong Kong Phooey/Black Lightning. Or even a quickie crossover tie-in like Convergence: Detective Comics. This rule has never once failed any of us, and we intend to follow it for this art duo's latest DC project.
Jeff Lemire is teaming up with the legendary artists and colorist Chris Sotomayor to bring The Question to DC's mature imprint, Black Label. The Question: The Deaths of Vic Sage is a four-part story starting in November that will track Vic Sage through history.

Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino will bring their unique perspectives to the world of the Joker in a new DC Black Label series.
DC Black Label has added yet another miniseries to its lineup of adult-oriented and darker superhero books. Not only is Jeff Lemire working on a new The Question series with the legendary Denys Cowan, but he's also set to tackle a new Joker story with frequent collaborator Andrea Sorrentino in Joker: Killer Smile, a three-parter debuting on Oct. 30.
"For years, the Joker has terrorized Gotham, facing off with Batman time and time again," read the synopsis. "But now he’s found a new adversary, one that can deliver him from the purgatory of Arkham Asylum and set his madness free once more—the very doctor tasked with treating him. As high-ranking executives at the most famous record company in the world, it was essential for us to project the utmost professionalism at all times. We talked in hushed tones nodding politely at staff whom, when we approached lowered their heads once pass the whispered comments began.

The follow up to the critically acclaimed comic Black is on Kickstarter now.
It's not terribly surprising given how critically and financially successful the original was and the spinoffs announced not long after, but we are finally getting our direct sequel to Black, one of the best comics of 2017. Kwanza Osajyefo, Tim Smith 3, Jamal Igle, Khary Randolph and the team behind that book are back with a new Kickstarter for White.
“How does a nation struggling with a history of racial inequality cope in a world where only black people have superpowers?” said Osajyefo. “Our story asks: In a time of supposed inclusion and diversity, how far will those in charge push back to retain the status quo?”
The original book brought readers into a superhero world where only black people had powers, and used the superhero metaphor to examine social issues while telling a banger of a cape story.

If you partook in the incredible celebration surrounding Action Comics #1000 earlier this year and hoped for Batman to receive similar treatment when he hits a similar milestone, well, then today’s the day we can guarantee your wish being granted.
You see, DC Comics have finally released the first details concerning Detective Comics #1000, and it looks like something none of us will want to miss. In fact, the landmark issue will introduce a new version of the Arkham Knight, thus bringing the familiar name into proper continuity.
As you may remember, the eponymous antagonist was first introduced in Rocksteady’s hit video game Batman: Arkham Knight, where he was ultimately unmasked as being Jason Todd. But considering how Jason’s well-established as the Red Hood within the DC Universe, it makes sense for someone else to be under the mask this time around.

But because God gets a kick out of such things my new Viacom offices were in Westwood, the reference library I was compelled to use was at U.C.La, and a trendy, expensive restaurant was where I was on my way to have lunch with Stan Lee.

Known for his Emmy-winning roles playing curmudgeons, ranging from Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show to Carl in the Pixar film Up, actor Ed Asner's true character is that of a philanthropist and loving father who shared his passion for comic books with his children.

I’ve said many times no one was more Milestone than Dwayne McDuffie. Denys Cowan’s larger than life idea created the company. Dwayne showed up with the details for that idea.
Milestone has made an impact on the comics world to be sure. Most would say comics have had an impact on the world and I would agree.
Just as no one was more Milestone than Dwayne, there was no one more ‘comics’ than Len Wein. That may be my opinion, but I defy anyone who knew Len to prove me wrong. Comics at their best induce moments where you’re living within the world you’re reading about. As an adult, if you’re lucky that feeling will last a few minutes if you achieve it at all.
As a child, those moments lasted hours maybe even longer depending on your level of interest and in my case your level of pain.

As I was watching the 2017 Emmy Awards last Sunday, I thought about how much the television industry has changed. It’s a cliché to say that this is the Golden Age of Television, but, in many ways, that is true.
However, that is not what I want to talk about.
Women and people of color won an unusually high percentage of awards. I mean, women always win in the “Best Actress” categories, but there were women (and people of color) (and queer people) winning in the writing and directing categories as well. This didn’t go unnoticed. To quote from Master of None writer Lena Waithe’s acceptance speech “And last, but certainly not least, my L.G.B.T.Q.I.A. family. I see each and every one of you. The things that make us different, those are our superpowers. Every day, when you walk out the door...

This article processes some hard truths many won’t like.
The first part of this narrative, Milestone Is Dead, got a lot of people talking.
Nothing and I mean nothing in that article was new. I’ve written about what and why I thought the holdup at Milestone was many times. The only thing that was new was the title.
Every move Milestone has made I’ve predicted beforehand, and done so in writing.
But as always put a new spin on an old point, and people see something bright and shiny and want to play with it.
Now people are paying attention.
Paying attention to see whether or not I’m going to throw more shade at my former partners. I didn’t throw any in the first place. I told the truth Milestone 2.0 formed almost seven years ago, and there are no books.
Milestone is dead for four reasons.

Starting with Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl. If that weren't enough, soon they will also launch Black Lightning. As many of us have already seen, they have already released a promo image as well as a trailer for the show. This show as confirmed by the CW President Mark Pedowitz will not be part of the Arrowverse as they are not looking to make a 5 way crossover, not to mention that while the other shows are produced in Vancouver, Black Lightning is produced in Atlanta. But I think that they will be crossed over at some point. Supergirl wasn't supposed to cross over either but that quickly changed as well all remember. So for now with...

Valiant continues their march to the big screen with comics veteran Reginald Hudlin directing Shadowman.
Reginald Hudlin, a veteran of just about everything entertainment related, has been brought in to direct Valiant Comics' Shadowman movie according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter.
Hudlin joins Salem showrunner Adam Simon, brought in to rework a script from J Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5, among other things), on the project. Valiant is working with Sony Pictures to bring their comics universe to the big screen, with Harbinger and Bloodshot movies already on the slate.
Shadowman is the gateway to Valiant's magical side: Jack Boniface is a New Orleans musician who gains the power to influence the Deadside, a supernatural realm just askance of normal reality. He's currently starring in Valiant Comics' annual summer crossover, Rapture, alongside Ninjak, the Geomancer (the living spirit and guardian of Earth), and Punk Mambo.

More than 20 years ago my swagger caused a rift between DC Comics and myself and that caused problems between DC and Milestone.
The pressure was put on Milestone to silence me. Silence me from what you ask? Calling DC Comics on their shit is what.
I gave up a significant income to concentrate on Milestone. DC was in breach of my deal, and as a result, I lived more than a year on my savings waiting for these people to pay me.
I did well, and my lifestyle conveyed that. My wife and I moved three times in just as many years. Our space got more luxurious until I found a loft, so dope (throwback slang it means fucking fantastic) thought I’d never want to leave there.
How dope?
If Milestone wanted to impress anyone those meetings took place in my new loft. That lifestyle was not because of...

Marvel Comics has had a heck of a tough year. With comic sales down, they're struggling to find that one story or character that would resonate with audiences. With constant event stories that, despite strong sale, end up disappointing readers, and characters and stories that just doesn't click with audiences, Marvel has been struggling to find their way in the crowded comic field.
One area they've been pretty successful has been with the Star Wars license. Since requiring the Star Wars license, thanks to Disney buying both Marvel and Lucasfilm, Marvel have found the right group of writers and artists to create...

You know, I’m really starting to think there’s some sort of Inception at work involving Samuel L. Jackson and Marvel. Seriously, it’s getting hard to tell where the comics end and the movies begin. As you may recall, Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch based their re-imagining of Nick Fury on the veteran actor’s likeness many moons ago with The Ultimates, so it was quite serendipitous that Jackson was eventually cast for the role of the S.H.I.E.L.D. director in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, as it turns out, the journey continues, albeit with a Star Wars twist.
You see, later this summer, the House of Ideas will be rolling out Star Wars: Jedi of the Republic – Mace Windu, a five-issue miniseries effectively placing the focus on Jackson’s character from the prequel trilogy. Brought to us by the creative team of...
