Actor Idris Elba has had to do some very intense scenes portraying detective John Luther on his titular show Luther. But there was one scene in the series so extreme that it even disturbed fans of the show.

Elba’s John Luther spends most of his time tracking down and detaining disturbed criminals. Because of this, the series has featured some pretty frightening characters over the years. The third season of Luther opened up with a harrowing situation involving an intruder, their hostage, and a bed. And it was a moment that left many viewers shaken. Speaking with BBC Newsbeat, the Beast star asserted that even he found the episode scary.

Daisy May Cooper is under consideration to take over from Dame Judi Dench as M in the next iteration of the James Bond franchise, per multiple reports.
The Gloucestershire-born actor and writer is best known for her West Country comedy series This Country, which she wrote and starred in.
According to The Sun, Cooper’s potential casting came about after Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s work on No Time to Die paved the way for more comedy in the franchise.

“Luther” sequel film “The Fallen Sun” opens like many of the episodes from the Idris Elba detective drama: with someone getting murdered. In the film’s case, the victim is Callum Aldrich (James Bamford), who is kidnapped and killed by wealthy serial killer David Robey (Andy Serkis). But in the film’s first draft, Callum was a woman before creator Neil Cross made a rewrite — at the request of Netflix.
Cross revealed the change in a recent interview with The Independent. The writer, who created the original series and penned every episode in addition to “Fallen Sun’s” screenplay, said that the first victim was female in the original script in part because he believes violence against women is more “frightening” for viewers.
“For reasons I fear to interrogate too deeply, the female victims resonate and scare more deeply,” Cross told The Independent. “So, there was a defiant part of...

Neil Cross says he changed the gender of the first victim in Luther: The Fallen Sun from a woman to a man after Netflix questioned his initial choice.
The author and screenwriter opened up about the decision in an interview with The Independent, during which he also spoke about why he thinks Luther star Idris Elba would make a great bond and whether he’d do another Luther movie project.
While addressing the change he made to The Fallen Sun, Cross addressed the ongoing conversation around the small and big screen’s history with violently victimizing women and previous criticism the Luther series faced regarding its portrayals of violence against women. Violence is very much present in Luther’s cinematic debut, with the creator and writer arguing that his universe actually tends to feature violence against men more.

The creator of Luther has revealed that Netflix asked him to chage the sex of the new film’s first victim.
Throughout Luther’s five-season run from 2010 to 2019, the BBC crime drama, starring Idris Elba, would typically start with the grisly murder of a female character.
In fact, many crime dramas, from The Fall to Line of Duty, rely on the depiction of extreme violence against women to make their impact more frightening.
But Luther: The Fallen Sun, which is out now, starts with the killing of a man – and writer Neil Cross has explained that this was a request made specifically by Netflix.
Speaking to The Independent, Cross addressed blowback he’s received in the past due to the show’s violence against women.
“It’s been mentioned before that people are uncomfortable with the victimisation of women in Luther – not unfairly,” he said, adding: “The odd thing, though,...

Is there any corner of the globe left untouched by the British crime drama? If it’s not Kenneth Branagh stalking through the inky expanses of the Swedish winter, or Roger Allam quaffing rosé in Provence, it’s Ralf Little, Ben Miller, Kris Marshall or Ardal O’Hanlon nicking killers (and evading taxes) in Guadeloupe. Now, British crime turns its attention to the Costa del Sol with A Town Called Malice (Sky Max). a pulpy, blood-soaked vision of Brits abroad. “Death arrives on the Costa,” growls the local Spanish detective. “I like it.”

Reaching into Inspector Morse’s past for a prequel series was a gamble that paid off handsomely. Endeavour, which followed the young detective over a seven-year period from constable to detective sergeant in the 1960s and early 1970s, just concluded after nine series. It was an exemplary prequel, beloved by newcomers and by fans of the original Inspector Morse, which it referenced playfully and with imagination.
Endeavour’s success was not a given, nor should it be laid at the feet of simple IP recognition. Prime Suspect 1973, which attempted the same trick by following a younger version of Helen Mirren’s celebrated Dci Jane Tennison, lasted only one series. Young Wallander on Netflix made it to two, but the response has been lukewarm. The 1930s-set Perry Mason starring Matthew Rhys in the lead role is faring better on HBO, but it’s clear that it’s not enough simply to...

Fans of Luther have complained about an apparent plot hole in the new Netflix movie Luther: The Fallen Sun.
Released on the streaming service last week, The Fallen Sun follows on from the hit BBC series, and sees Idris Elba return as the maverick detective John Luther.
Spoilers follow for Luther: The Fallen Sun – you have been warned!
At the end of Luther’s fifth series, Elba’s character is arrested after failing to save his ex-lover-turned-nemesis Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson).
Fallen Sun begins with Luther behind bars. While it is not revealed exactly why he is imprisoned, he was previously suspected of the murders of Alice, DS Halliday, Benny Silver (Michael Smiley), and Mr Palmer, an assassin.
As viewers know, he was in fact innocent of all the murders, despite a propensity for breaking the rules. However, it seems like he was convicted on at least one of the counts.

No one would ever accuse the BBC detective series "Luther" of being fluffy and light-hearted, but the film, "Luther: The Fallen Sun," is exceptionally bleak. The film, which sees detective John Luther (Idris Elba) try to capture a vicious serial killer named David Robey (Andy Serkis), is somehow even darker than the television series. In fact, there's even a real-life horror story wrapped into the film through a scene that takes place in front of the Anatomical Crucifixion, an ancient and rather disturbing work of art hanging in London's Royal Academy of the Arts. In a scene near the beginning of the film, Robey visits the Anatomical Crucifixion and sort of stares at it while he discusses his plans (via voiceover) for John Luther. Like the depiction of a flayed man before him, Robey wants Luther metaphorically crucified and laid bare, his layers peeled away for everyone to see.

You have to watch what you say if you’re famous these days. This week, Wednesday star Jenna Ortega has been both lauded and criticised for an interview she gave with Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast. Speaking about Netflix’s record-breaking Addams Family adaptation, she described aspects of the original script as not “making sense”, claiming that she “became almost unprofessional” and “started changing lines” while on set. “I can’t watch my work, but I can go home from set and say, ‘The scene that we shot today felt good,’” Ortega said. “[On] Wednesday there was not a scene in that show that I went home and was like, ‘Ok, that should be fine.’”
Her comments drew the ire of some: suffice to say, she is not the most popular figure on screenwriting Twitter at the moment. Pushing back against others’ work on set is one thing. Discussing it...

Neil Cross has opened up about whether he’d ever showrun Doctor Who.
The novelist and TV writer, who created Luther, is a big fan of the BBC sci-fi series, and got to write two episodes back in 2013.
His outings for series seven, titled “The Rings of Akhaten” and “Hide”, came during the Steven Moffatt era, when Matt Smith played the Time Lord, and Jenna-Louise Coleman played his assistant, Clara Oswald.
Russell T Davies, who rebooted the show in 2005, has returned as showrunner of the series – and The Independent asked Cross what he would do if Davies asked Cross to replace him when he decides to step away again.
Cross said he’d “be too scared to take on Doctor Who”.

In his stunning three-episode arc as factory prison foreman Kino Loy in last year's "Andor," Andy Serkis presented a character that audiences were fiercely rooting for. In crime thriller "Luther: The Fallen Sun," the actor cuts right to the other end of the spectrum as sadistic serial killer David Robey. Sporting a coiffed blond 'do and armed with a tech empire and a dangerous amount of wealth, Robey's particular M.O. might prompt you to stick a bit of electrical tape over your laptop camera.
With an insatiable hunger for people's most shameful secrets, Robey has an army of hackers spying on the computers, phones, smart speakers, and other devices of random unsuspecting people all over the world. He's "harvesting shame from the ether," as writer Neil Cross puts it. And with a simple threat to release this blackmail material to the world, he can puppeteer victims right into his...

Fans of Idris Elba's thrilling crime drama "Luther" will always have the same question going into every new installment: will Alice Morgan return? The iconic narcissistic and psychopathic murderer (played by Ruth Wilson) comes in and out of Luther's life in a havoc-wreaking game of cat and mouse throughout the show's five seasons. Although the murderous genius constantly challenges Luther's altruistic worldview with her nihilistic one, the detective can't deny his underlying feelings for her.
Alice seemingly fell to her death in season five, but her body disappeared, leaving fans to wonder if she's actually dead and whether or not she would appear in future installments of "Luther." Well, "Luther: The Fallen Sun" premiered on Netflix on March 10, answering whether our favorite detective's antagonist lover would return from the dead once again. Here's the deal.

What would "Luther" be without London? More specifically, what would the series be without its dark interpretation of the English Capital? Over five seasons of "Luther," creator and writer Neil Cross has maintained a commitment to delving under the carapace of the city, eschewing standard shots of recognizable landmarks in favor of unearthing a grimy underbelly. Of course, that's all mirrored in the character of Luther himself. Since the show debuted in 2011, Idris Elba's tortured detective has endured all manner of harrowing experience, witnessing friends and family die and coming to represent a human manifestation of the very urban decay that surrounds him. And what better place for a brilliant yet haunted detective to operate than in a great yet eroding city?

Over five seasons, Idris Elba's John Luther has encountered some of the worst monsters that London had to offer. From a chilling slasher who hides behind a Mr. Punch mask, to a killer who chooses his victims at random on the roll of a die, to a cannibal with Cotard's syndrome, the former Dci has seen the darkest sides of humanity.
Emphasis on "former," because "Luther: The Fallen Sun" finds its protagonist disgraced and behind bars. This is where fans of the show left him at the end of season 5, following a complex series of events, but the film provides its own explanation for Luther's incarceration so that newcomers can jump right in. Luther breaks out of his forced retirement after receiving a taunt from a serial killer whose case he'd been investigating. David Robey (Andy Serkis) specializes in psychological torment, using blackmail to puppeteer his victims in the lead-up to their deaths.

One evening in 2008, Neil Cross posed perhaps the most important question he’s ever asked. The TV writer and novelist, on the phone to a BBC producer, was being praised for a treatment he’d put together for a new London-set series about a volatile trench coat-wearing detective. But there was a problem: the lead character’s name had to change – and an alternative was needed immediately.
“At this point, it was just a show in development,” Cross recalls. “I shouted to my wife in the kitchen: ‘What’s the best name: Luther or Solomon?’ and she went: ‘Luther!’ So I said into the phone, ‘He’s called Luther.’”
Fifteen years and five series later, the first of which was released in 2010, it’s impossible to imagine Idris Elba striding around London, announcing his arrival at crime scenes with a flash of his badge and a gruff: “Solomon.” Elba is...

This post contains spoilers for "No Time To Die."
As we all prepare to move into the post-Daniel Craig era of Bond movies, Idris Elba is a name that just doesn't seem to go away. For years, the now 50-year-old actor has been tipped as one of the most likely to take over the mantle of 007, even though in 2021 Elba admitted he's probably not going to be the next Bond. And with Craig's version firmly buried beneath a hail of ballistics in the finale of "No Time To Die," the rumor mill has once again started churning, even as Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson remain tight-lipped on who will be the next James Bond.
In the meantime, Elba has returned to one of his best roles with the new Netflix movie "Luther: The Fallen Sun." In what looks like a fittingly bombastic outing, considering the TV...

Neil Cross has admitted that a well-loved series character almost returned in the Luther film.
The novelist and TV writer has created a Netflix movie based on the BBC series, titled Luther: The Fallen Sun, in which Luther is pitted against David Robey (Andy Serkis), a tech billionaire with deadly motives.
It’s the first Luther project since the fifth series in 2019, and is low on returning characters: the only other regular to appear is Dsu Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley).
However, in a new interview with The Independent, Cross opened up about the “temptation” he felt to bring back other characters in varying ways, including Ruth Wilson’s Alice Morgan.
“Alice is not in this film, but that's not a kind of an act of exclusion – it's a sin of omission,” he said. “If anything, it's not an attempt to prove anything.

The name’s Luther, John Luther. With the impending release of Luther: The Fallen Sun–a continuation of the incredible British crime series Luther–and the hunt for James Bond ongoing, it’s been revealed that the Luther movie does contain a subtle jab at 007.
Reports have come out that Luther: The Fallen Sun contains a scene in which Luther, played by Idris Elba, turns down a martini, Bond’s favorite drink. According to series creator and the movie’s writer Neil Cross, the scene serves as “an extended middle finger and a wink.”
Elba, of course, was a popular fan choice to take over the role of Bond, even as the Luther movie was in production. And while it has essentially been confirmed that Idris Elba has aged out of the Bond role, fans will at least get a mock-crossover.
But no, the Luther movie and character aren’t his “audition” for Bond.

The creator of Luther: The Fallen Sun has revealed that he couldn’t resist a playful snipe at James Bond amid continued speculation linking Idris Elba to Ian Fleming’s iconic character.
Netflix’s big-screen treatment of the BBC detective series features Elba’s John Luther cheekily refusing a martini, famously Bond’s cocktail of choice.
Neil Cross told the Radio Times that the moment was “an extended middle finger and a wink” at 007 because Luther is better.
Elba told the magazine that Luther: The Fallen Sun was not a stepping stone to playing the British spy, as Barbara Broccoli hunts for Daniel Craig’s successor.
“My Bond audition? Oh my God, no! I’ve been saying for years, no,” he said, adding: “The martini line is a bit cheeky, isn’t it? I was like, ‘Neil, are you sure you want to put that in?’”

Idris Elba appears to have finally put the endless speculation about his future being with James Bond to rest in his new film Luther: The Fallen Sun – even rejecting the offer of a martini in one scene, which he acknowledges was tipping the wink to knowing fans.
He told the UK’s Guardian newspaper this weekend that he remains extremely close to Bond’s producers, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson, but dismissed the idea of them ever offering him the role:
“I can’t speak for them, but from my perspective, there’s never been any sort of truth to any of it. It’s a compliment and it’s an honour, but it’s not a truth.”

Earlier today, we shared the news that Johan Renck, who executive produced and directed all five episodes of the HBO limited series Chernobyl, had walked away from the HBO Max series Dune: The Sisterhood, a show he was supposed to direct the first two episodes of, due to creative differences. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Renck has already lined up another project. Renck will be directing a mini-series based on the 1951 science fiction novel The Day of the Triffids, written by John Wyndham, for Amazon Studios.
The Day of the Triffids is a post-apocalyptic tale of an alien invasion of Earth by a cloud of seeds which sprout sentient plants. A large portion of the population is blinded by a meteor shower in preparation for the invasion and small groups of sighted survivors of different social strata in England vie to survive.

Idris Elba returns in Luther: The Fallen Sun as Dci John Luther, reprising the role he played in twenty-one episodes of the BBC television series from 2010-19. For the most part, the film plays well as a crime drama, but the cinematic debut of the character seems less focused on telling a self-sustaining story within the already constructed universe of the television series, and more intent on proving that Elba would have indeed made a potent James Bond.
As Luther: The Fallen Sun begins, the disgraced detective is behind bars, being taunted by the cyber psychopath he failed to capture, leading to his incarceration. As the taunting increases, along with the killer’s crimes, Luther decides he must break out of prison and catch this maniac by any means necessary. Developing a successful TV show into a movie is a tricky old business: go too big and you risk jumping the shark; play it safe and it’s slightly more polished business as usual. For the most part, Luther: The Fallen Sun – the first feature-length outing for Idris Elba’s beloved, rule-bending detective – plots a skilful course between the two. But a Netflix-sized upgrade, it seems, can be both a gift and a curse…
Serving as both a continuation of the show and a standalone adventure, The Fallen Sun is surprisingly self-contained, with just enough exposition up-front to ensure that newbies aren’t lost and a handful of references to past cases littered throughout for fans to pick up on.

Misery is part of the “Luther” equation. It’s visited on suspects and victims and detectives and, to some extent, the audience watching it. Over five seasons, it’s been a cornerstone of the BBC crime drama, a neverending series of rock-bottoms.
That overpowering darkness has been a major “Luther” throughline, coupled with the shuffling in and out of the coworkers and compatriots of Dci John Luther (Idris Elba). He’s had partners — in most senses of the word — die in front of him. He’s uncovered grisly killings and mutilated bodies. Those five seasons have been a steady dose of one-upping, to see how much one man can survive.
So after almost a decade of rumblings, the long-discussed “Luther” movie has arrived. “Luther: The Fallen Sun” is more adaptation than extension, changing the environment and Luther’s toolset in a way that makes it accessible for viewers who haven...

Feature incarnation of the Idris Elba cop drama sees a ropey but savage snuff-porn plot get too much explicit attention
Neil Cross’s smash-hit BBC TV crime drama now gets its own standalone feature film, with Idris Elba returning as the troubled London police officer John Luther, effectively continuing the story from the end of the fifth season. This may well play very effectively to the show’s fanbase and there’s certainly an alpha supporting cast including Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis and Hattie Morahan.
But I have to say – and those squeamish about spoilers and cliches had better look away now – that without the extended context of longform TV, the greater emphasis on explicit, violent horror is a bit exhausting. The serial-killer accessories feel hand-me-down; the Scandi noir touch is spurious and storylines in the movies about evil criminal plans to livestream snuff-porn are frankly always lame and implausible.

Luther, the BBC crime drama starring Idris Elba as a rule-adverse detective, was swiftly overtaken by cinematic ambition. What began as a relatively humble cop series set in a crime-ridden London became increasingly more absurd as it went on. By its fifth series, Luther was dealing with a killer in a clown mask shooting people full of nails. Luther: The Fallen Sun, a feature-length revival by Netflix, feels like an all-too-logical extension. The budget’s been upped considerably. Hollywood’s own Andy Serkis and Cynthia Erivo have been air-lifted in for support. And it’s fun, in the patently ridiculous way these sorts of zhuzhed-up thrillers tend to be.

“Luther: The Fallen Sun” starts by punishing its protagonist — scruffy, cross-the-line Detective Chief Inspector John Luther (Idris Elba) — for all his past sins after the franchise’s latest villain, played by Andy Serkis, releases details of Luther’s rule-bending tactics to the media. On the phone with some kind of Estonian henchman, Serkis’ Robey implies that it will be tricky to dig up the dirt on Luther because “he doesn’t have much of an online presence,” but the next thing we know, Luther’s being tossed into a high-security prison. Idris Elba may have taken himself out of the running to play James Bond, but he’s got a pretty terrific franchise already going playing John Luther, the dogged and troubled British detective. The title character of the hit BBC series that’s been running periodically since 2010 has now been given the big-screen treatment with the new feature film directed and written by series veterans Jamie Payne and Neil Cross, respectively. Well, big screen for a little while, anyway, since Luther: The Fallen Sun is receiving only a limited theatrical release before premiering on Netflix next month.
The creators have cannily threaded the needle with this feature installment, designed to please longtime fans while providing an easy entry point for newcomers. The movie plays like a series episode on steroids, with significantly bigger production values and a darker tone (and that’s saying something) that comes close to horror-film territory.

It’s been promised for some time, and it’s almost upon us: the big-screen version of Idris Elba series Luther.
That’s if you watch it in the cinema, of course. The film is getting a limited theatrical release, but then will be available to stream on Netflix from 10 March.
However, it’s thanks to this streaming service budget that fans are going to see the grizzled detective in situations the BBC simply couldn’t afford.
Have you ever wanted to see Luther inciting a riot while breaking out of prison? Firstly, who hasn’t, and secondly, you will! Have you ever wondered what Luther would look like walking up a snowy moutain range? Wonder no more. And, while fans of the series are used to seeing Elba on footchases around London’s grimiest streets, this time we’ll see him dodging tubes on the London underground.

Whenever a TV series ends and we get a movie follow-up years later, there are some concerns.
Netflix unveiled the trailer for Luther: The Fallen Sun on Thursday, and it looks like a solid sequel.
The movie drops in select theaters on February 24, before getting a release on Netflix on March 10.
It's a similar tactic employed by Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story, which worked out very well.
"In Luther: The Fallen Sun — an epic continuation of the award-winning television saga reimagined for film — a gruesome serial killer is terrorizing London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther (Idris Elba) sits behind bars," the official description teases.
"Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary," the official description continues.
