The movie starred Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon as pair of friends on the run from the law.
In a red carpet interview with E! News at the Critics’ Choice Awards, Seyfried said, “I wanna go to Broadway. I wanna sing, and I think I’m finally getting to that point where it’s gonna happen.” She added, “You should hear Evan Rachel Wood sing. My god.”
Deadline’s sister publication Variety first reported the Thelma & Louise project after actor Mo Brings Plenty accepted a Globe on behalf of the absent Seyfried and said she was “deep in the process of creating a new musical.”

Amanda Seyfried missed the Golden Globes because she was involved in a workshop of musical adaptation of Thelma & Louise, a rep for the show confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter on Friday.
The musical, which was in early stages of development in 2021, is being adapted for the stage, the rep said. Evan Rachel Wood is also said to be involved in the workshop. Her reps did not reply to a request for comment from THR as of press time.
Variety first reported news of Seyfried and Wood’s involvement in the project.
In June 2021, Thelma & Louise screenwriter Callie Khouri told THR about the “very early stages” of development for the musical. Khouri said the musical had director Trip Cullman (who has directed Choir Boy, Lobby Hero and more on Broadway) attached, a score by indie singer-songwriter Neko Case and a script by Halley Feiffer, an actress and playwright who...

Evan Rachel Wood is also being eyed to join the musical, but no official casting announcement has been made yet.

Amanda Seyfried and Evan Rachel Wood Workshopping a ‘Thelma & Louise’ Musical Adaptation (Exclusive)
When Amanda Seyfried won a Golden Globe on Tuesday night, she wasn’t in the Beverly Hills ballroom due to being “deep in the process of creating a new musical” — and now we may know what that is. Insiders tell Variety that Seyfried is involved with a workshop on the musical version of “Thelma & Louise.” There’s also talk that Evan Rachel Wood has joined Seyfried in the project.
A “Thelma & Louise” musical has been in the works since at least 2021 with the film’s screenwriter, Callie Khouri, attached, as well as indie singer/songwriter Neko Case creating the score and Haley Feiffer (“Dear Edward”) writing the book.
Reports in 2021 noted that theatre director Trip Cullman (“Six Degrees of Separation”) was also on board to helm the musical adaptation of the iconic 1991 film, which starred Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, and won Khouri the Oscar for best writing,...

If you’re confused as to who is actually able to compete for the newly announced virtual Tony Awards this fall, you’re not alone. The Tony Awards Administration Committee announced a new cut off date of February 19, 2020. That means that the 2019-2020 Broadway season was cut incredibly short.
Musical races are most heavily affected by the shortened season. “West Side Story” will have to wait until next year to compete as it opened after the February 19th eligibility cutoff date. Other scheduled revivals of “Caroline, or Change” and “Company” were postponed due to the Broadway shutdown. As such there will be no Revival of a Musical category this year. Other categories, like Best Musical and Director of a Musical, will likely see their number of nominees reduced to three due to a limited number of contenders.
Luckily, there are plenty of plays in contention since many of these non-musical outings premiere in the fall.

Imagine you’re invited to some netherworld, Southern Gothic-themed cocktail party peopled with Tennessee Williams heroines. There’s Amanda Wingfield and Blanche DuBois competing for pity with wilted stories of glory days, Maggie the Cat in her slip, stalking waiters, and lusty Maxine walking a leashed iguana and a cabana boy or two. Even among this look-at-me bunch, The Rose Tattoo‘s Serafina Delle Rose would be a spectacle, the brash, loud and vulgar center of attention outtalking everyone else, bragging about her long-dead husband’s bedroom talents, how the two got those colored lights going like even Stanley Kowalski would envy.

Nearly 10 million people saw Camille A. Brown’s work one night last year. Let that sink in. On a single evening – Easter Sunday 2018 – Brown’s choreography for NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert reached a number of viewers unimaginable in the dance, theater and concert halls of New York, and yet an accomplishment this year in one of those very theaters has made an impact quite possibly of equal or greater impact. Brown’s choreography for Tarell Alvin McCraney’s play-with-music Choir Boy has been nominated for a 2019 Tony Award.

When this year’s Tony Award nominations were announced, Jeremy Pope became only the sixth person Tony history nominated twice in the same season. His performance in Tarell Alvin McCraney’s Choir Boy as Pharus, a bullied, gay prep school student whose singing talent is matched by a fierce determination, has Pope in the running for Best Lead Actor/play. And as the great Eddie Kendricks, the Temptation who sang lead on such hits as “Just My Imagination” and “The Way You Do The Things You Do,” Pope’s performance in Ain’t Too Proud has him up for Best Featured Actor/musical.

The stage musical adaptation of Channing Tatum’s stripper saga Magic Mike has cancelled what was to be a pre-Broadway Boston engagement.
The pull-out from Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre is little surprise. The production, which had been scheduled to run Nov. 30, 2019 through Jan. 5, 2020, lost its big-name creative team last month. Composer Tom Kitt, lyricist Brian Yorkey and book writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa left the show over “creative differences.” A private workshop initially set for New York was postponed, then cancelled altogether.
“The producers of Magic Mike The Musical have cancelled a Boston engagement, saying that they don’t feel the musical is ready for production,” reads a statement released today by the Emerson Colonial Theatre. The producers are Channing Tatum, Steven Soderbergh, Gregory Jacobs, Nick Wechsler, Reid Carolin and Peter Kiernan. (Tatum was never expected to perform in the musical).

Marisa Tomei will star in a Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams’ The Rose Tattoo, to be directed by Trip Cullman and set for a Roundabout Theatre Company production in September.
Tomei will play Serafina, the widow “who rekindles her desire for love, lust and life in the arms of a fiery suitor,” in the description by Roundabout. Other casting — including that fiery suitor — hasn’t been announced.
The Rose Tattoo will begin previews on September 19, with an official opening on Tuesday, October 15. The limited engagement will run through December 8 at the nonprofit Roundabout’s Broadway venue American Airlines Theatre.
Cullman and Tomei premiered the revival at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in June 2016.
The play made its Tony-winning Broadway debut in 1951, starring Maureen Stapleton and Eli Wallach. A movie version was released in 1955 starring Anna Magnani and Burt Lancaster, and a 1995 Broadway revival at Circle in the Square starred Mercedes Ruehl and Anthony Lapaglia.

The Magic Mike musical has lost some of its mojo. Book writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, composer Tom Kitt and lyricist Brian Yorkey have exited the project – “creative differences” is the official word – and a private workshop of the musical originally set for this week in New York has been postponed.
Directed by Trip Cullman with choreography by Camille A. Brown and based on the 2012 movie starring Channing Tatum, Magic Mike is still set to bow at Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre for a planned Nov. 30-Jan. 5 engagement. When it was announced in January, the engagement was described as pre-Broadway; no Broadway plans have been announced at this point.

Below, we recap the plot of each play as well as the awards history of its author, cast, creative types, the opening, and (where applicable) closing dates.
“Choir Boy” (opens January 8; closes March 10)
In this new play by Oscar winner Tarell Alvin McCraney, the story centers on the Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys, which for a half a century has been dedicated to the education of strong, ethical black men. One talented student has been waiting for years to take his rightful place as the leader of the school’s legendary gospel choir. But can he make his way through the hallowed halls of this institution if he sings in his own key?...

“Magic Mike” fans will soon be able to experience the franchise in a whole new way as Broadway-bound “Magic Mike the Musical” comes to Boston this fall.
Billed as a prequel to the hit 2012 film and its follow-up, “Magic Mike Xxl,” the musical will explore how Channing Tatum’s titular character first discovered his talent for stripping.
Despite starring in the first two movies, Tatum will not take the stage for the musical, but he is leading the production team. “Magic Mike” director Steven Soderbergh and writer Reid Carolin, and “Magic Mike Xxl” helmer Gregory Jacobs will also join him.
This won’t be the first time the “Magic Mike” franchise hits the stage. “Magic Mike Live” has performed in Las Vegas clubs and recently came to London.
Trip Cullman will direct the musical, and Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey — both winners of Tonys and Pulitzers — will compose the score.

When Choir Boy, the coming of age story from Tarell Alvin McCraney that predates his Oscar-winning, co-written screenplay for Moonlight, finds its sweet spots – and they are many – the drama, the humor and the music take off for parts unknown. This is a play that, like its unstoppable main character, never quits reaching for the high note, even when perfection is beyond its grasp.
Set in a prestigious prep school for African American boys, Choir Boy – a Manhattan Theatre Club production opening tonight at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre – grapples with questions of pride and shame, sexual identity, legacies and duty. Memorably performed (particularly by its young star Jeremy Pope), its frequent choir songs beautifully sung by the entire cast, the production is another fine addition to director Trip Cullman’s resume (his Lobby Hero was one of Broadway’s 2018 bests).
Still, Choir Boy shouldn’t be oversold, a temptation...

The Secret Life of Bees, a new musical based on the best-selling novel and with music by Dunan Sheik, will make its world premiere next May at the Atlantic Theater Off-Broadway. The production will be directed by Tony winner Sam Gold (Fun Home).
The musical, with a book by Lynn Nottage and lyrics by Susan Birkenhead, based on the novel by Sue Monk Kidd, is part of the Atlantic’s 2018-19 season announced today, a roster that includes The Mother, a new play starring Oscar-nominated actress Isabelle Huppert.
Sheik’s 2006 Spring Awakening won the Tony Award for Best Musical. His 2016 American Psycho, though, was a Broadway flop.
Bees would seem altogether likelier musical material than the bloody, bloody American Psycho. Kidd’s 2001 novel, set in 1964, was adapted into a 2008 film starring Dakota Fanning and Queen Latifah, and tells the story of, as the Atlantic describes it, “a restless white teenager...

Even by Hollywood-meets-New York standards, the production of Lobby Hero at Broadway’s newly renovated Hayes Theatre is an impressive crossover affair. Written by Kenneth Lonergan 15 years before his Manchester by the Sea triumph, starring Michael Cera, Chris Evans (in a really terrific Broadway debut), Atlanta‘s Brian Tyree Henry and The Diary of a Teenage Girl‘s Bel Powley, the lines outside the theater on any given night are a foregone conclusion.
But Lobby Hero is no gimmick event, its no-weak-link casting anything but a stunt – strong enough, in fact, to merit serious Tony consideration. A fine and funny drama when it debuted Off Broadway in 2001, the play hasn’t so much aged as grown into itself and the world around it. That’s good news for the theater, not so much the world.
