Hip-hop has transformed music, and the world at large, since it was conceived 50 years ago. In a relatively short time, it's made a massive impact on every aspect of pop culture - and fortunately, there are a lot of great documentaries that chronicle the unforgettable, twists, turns, and triumphs that made hip-hop what it is today.
Many of these documentaries offer fascinating insights into hip-hop's exponential growth, such as 1995's "The Show" and 2016's "Hip-Hop Evolution," which both examine exactly how the genre became a worldwide, multibillion-dollar industry. Some of them also focus on individual artists, like 2003's "Tupac: Resurrection," a documentary narrated entirely by Tupac Shakur himself. Others focus on specific music scenes, like Ava DuVernay's "This Is the Life," which centers Los Angeles's alternative rap scene in the 1990s, while others delve into the technical aspects of hip-hop and rap, like Ice-t's...

In his lifetime, Tracy Marrow has been everything from a dancer and a DJ, to a thief and a weed dealer. Yet, from the minute Marrow became Ice-t, his renown developed and grew.
Initially, being Ice-t meant becoming hip-hop’s most incendiary voice, a sinister avatar of the reality-rap style tagged by the press as “gangster”. Equally famous was Ice-t’s gig as an actor-with-attitude in films such as “New Jack City” and — since 2000 — for television producer Dick Wolf’s police drama “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” as NYPD Detective Odafin Tutuola.
Ice-t brings street cred to everything he does — including commercials. He beams with pride discussing his hood past and how its raw-knuckle spirit remains. Even seeing Ice-t riding a spin cycle, promoting Cheerios and heart health, is hardcore. And it all starts with hip-hop. Despite its current state of musicality being — in his words, “goofy” — Ice-t is...

Ever since Straight Outta Compton became a box office sensation last year, there’s been no shortage of claims that there were many infamous N.W.A. tales omitted from the movie.
Most of them can be found in new book Original Gangstas: The Untold Story of Dr. Dre, Eazy-e, Ice Cube, Tupac Shakur, and the Birth of West Coast Rap â. which offers an impressive and exhaustive look inside the real world of the pioneering group that brought gangsta rap to the masses.
Here, author Ben Westhoff discusses five pieces of the band’s history that you didn’t see in the film.

This year promises a bumper crop of hip-hop films – here's how to get up to speed with the genre

I was never sold on The Kids Are Alright and I never got the joke about Spinal Tap – but I understand the power of a good hip-hop documentary. For hip-hop fans who weren't around to witness battle raps in the Bronx or block parties in downtown NY, hip-hop docs are a valuable commodity. This year will see two new additions to the genre: Can't Forget New Jersey looks at the migration of hip-hop out of NY and there's also For The Record: The Story of Latin Hip Hop. If the hip-hop forums are to be believed, there is also a film in the pipeline about Eazy-e's life. Those of you lucky enough to be within striking distance of New York can get...

Alpha Girls is a delightful pact-with-Satan sorority girls flick. Written and directed by Tony Torv and Johnny Zito, Alpha Girls tells the story of an inexplicably powerful sorority where the bodies of dead pink-sweater clad pledges keep piling up. One of girls hoping to pledge makes a little pact with the devil and, of course, she just happens to be the biggest bitch in the house. She goes on a bloody power trip and coeds die in varied and creative ways. The movie makes some fun nods to classic satanic flicks and boasts cameos by Ron Jeremy and Schoolly D.
If you are in Philadelphia, catch a screening Sunday, December 9 before it goes on a 30-city tour. The dates are below the trailer. Check the Alpha Girls site for full summary and specifics on screening locations.

King of New York, arguably the most popular and accomplished work from the cannon of cult New York filmmaker Abel Ferrara, finds a loving home on Blu-ray, thanks to that dedicated restoration team at Arrow Films.
Frank White (a haunted, yet volatile, turn by Christopher Walken) is a notorious drug lord who has just completed a lengthy prison sentence and is looking to move back up the ranks as swift and ruthlessly as possible. Hooking up with his old associates, he begins to do just that, although his ultimate aims sit firmly outside the drug business, as he see’s himself as a benefactor to the poor inhabitants of the city, whom he seeks to help and provide the appropriate support for.

Arrow Films is pleased to announce that the highly anticipated deluxe Blu-ray, DVD & Steelbook editions of Abel Ferrara’s cult gangster classic King Of New York, will be released in the UK on Monday June 25th.
We have three copies of the Blu-ray to give away!
Taking influence from the hard-edged crime capers of the 1930’s, King Of New York stars Christopher Walken in electric form as the snakelike mob boss Frank White. Originally released in September 1990, on the same day as Goodfellas, King Of New York is widely regarded as one of the most stylish and visually stunning movies of the decade.
Ferrara perfectly captures New York’s gritty underbelly. The near non-stop action showcases the vast contrasts of a city after the sun goes down; from the luxury Penthouses and restaurants of Manhattan, to crack dens, apartment blocks, and the rattling carriages of the New York subway.

Music fans, rest assured. Tom Cruise, a bunch of garish costumes and set design, and the hair metal tunes from "Rock Of Ages" won't be your only option this weekend at the movies. For those looking for a more satisfying musical outing, head to your local arthouse for "Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap," a documentary that explores the birth of hip hop and how it has turned into a global phenomenon.
Premiering earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, the film is co-directed by Ice-t and Andy Baybutt ("The Band Aid Story") and takes an in-depth look at the craft of rhyming, with interviews from some of the biggest stars in rap, including Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Caz, Nas, Mos Def, Eminem, Chuck D, Krs-One, Run-dmc, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg. Essential info: It's no secret that Philadelphia is a hotbed for hip-hop talent. In the 1980s, it was Schoolly D who helped put Philly on the map with his 1986 hip-hop classic "P.S.K. What Does It Mean?" Of course, the Fresh Prince followed a few years later, then the Roots. In the late 1990s, Jay-z introduced Beanie Sigel to the world, and Maybach Music's Meek Mill is currently the city's most recognizable rap figure.
Still more and more raw rap talent continues to break out of Illadelphia's borders, and the latest contender, Tone Trump, was handpicked by Young Jeezy. These days, a street rapper can't get a bigger co-sign.

Good night, and good luck Aqua Teen Hunger Force. We shall miss your lackadaisical ramblings, your absurd adventures in New Jersey, and your unrelenting depravity.

Meatwad himself (Dave Willis) appeared in an Adult Swim promo to announce the news, notably that in addition to the name, the series would return to the detective premise that began the original series, but was promptly dropped after three episodes. Aqua Teen Hunger Force is a surreal, absurdist, relentlessly bizarre series about a milkshake, a box of french fries, and a ball of ground meat who live together in New Jersey and go on non-adventures. Because we live in an insane world, this show has been on for a decade, and has inspired both a movie and a bomb scare. Now, though, everything is changing. He made his name playing hoodlums and rapists, and won acclaim as Mesrine, France's most charismatic gangster. Now his latest film, Black Swan, is about ballet. Is Vincent Cassel mellowing?
It isn't a good idea to upset Vincent Cassel. This, after all, is an actor who has made his name playing a succession of complex and profoundly villainous characters. In La Haine, Cassel's breakthrough 1995 film, he was a teenage hoodlum intent on killing a policeman. In Eastern Promises, David Cronenberg's violent 2007 deconstruction of the Russian underworld in London, Cassel's character rapes a 14-year-old girl and forces her into prostitution. And in Mesrine, arguably his most acclaimed role to date, the actor portrayed one of the most notorious gangsters in French history, winning a best actor César last year for his performance.
So I am a smidgen apprehensive that an ill-judged question will send him into some sort of psychopathic meltdown.

Mark Kermode enjoys a Billy Paul biopic, a faux-biopic of mountain-dancing madman Jesco White, two David Lynch collections and a celebration of Derek Jarman
Over the past few years, several music documentaries that would previously have been confined to TV have taken a brief theatrical bow before appearing on DVD. This year's standout was Am I Black Enough for You (pictured, 2009, Drakes Avenue, E) the story of Philadelphia soul legend Billy Paul. Having achieved mainstream success with "Me and Mrs Jones", Paul horrified his "cross-over" fans with the radical broadside that gives this DVD its name, which promptly relegated him to outsider status. Years later, artists such as Schoolly D (who features here) helped to reclaim him as a lost icon of black power, although the bittersweet battle between principle and opportunity is left unresolved in this engrossing portrait.

From the official website of valiant filmmaker Werner Herzog's delightfully bonkers new feature, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, which should not be called a remake of Abel Ferrara's grimy 1992 cult classic: Nicolas Cage plays a rogue detective who is as devoted to his job as he is at scoring drugs—while playing fast and loose with the law. He wields his badge as often as he wields his gun in order to get his way. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina he becomes a high-functioning addict who is a deeply intuitive, fearless detective reigning over the beautiful ruins of New Orleans with authority and abandon. Complicating his tumultuous life is the prostitute he loves (Eva Mendes). Together they descend into their own world marked by desire, compulsion, and conscience. The result is a singular masterpiece of filmmaking: equally sad and manically humorous.
