There's a lot at stake with the release this Friday of "Noah," and not just for the filmmakers or the studio that sunk a reported $160 million into the film.
In a year when Hollywood is releasing several Bible-inspired movies, "Noah" has become the test case for a number of issues -- whether Hollywood can earn the trust of fundamentalist Christians (and whether it's worth risking money and controversy even to try), whether it's possible to make big-budget spectacles that please both religious viewers and secular action-film fans, and whether directors can make Bible-themed movies that adhere to doctrine without compromising artistically or making dull propaganda.
It would be easy to see this saga as a story of just two players. On the one side is Hollywood, represented here by "Noah" studio Paramount, which would like to attract Christian viewers, and which has practically bent over backward to do so, testing...

The first reviews for Darren Aronofsky's "Noah" are out and the reaction is unsurprisingly mixed. Preview audiences and film critics of various religious and secular backgrounds are divided over the film. Some of the most negative reviews have been interesting - praising aspects of the movie, yet also calling it the filmmaker's worst film.
One person who outright hates the film, though he admits he hasn't seen it yet, is former Fox News correspondent turned right-leaning media pundit Glenn Beck according to THR.
Talking to his ten million listeners Friday morning, Beck says "I haven't seen it nor will I, because it's a slap in the face" he said before reading out portions of a trade paper review. He goes on to say:
"This movie, if it becomes successful – if we take our churches and we all go and everything else – our children will look at that as being the Noah story,...

U2 frontman Bono had a lot to say about Jesus Christ and Christianity during his recent radio interview with Focus on the Family.
The "With or Without You" singer first said he can relate to the Biblical character David, because he's a musician. Regarding David's song lyrics -- also known as the Book of Psalms -- Bono says that while they are "gospel and songs of praise, they are also the Blues."
As for what he thinks about who Jesus really was, Bono doesn't really hedge on the issue. "When people say 'good teacher,' 'prophet,' 'really nice guy,' ... this is not how Jesus thought of himself," says Bono. "So, you're left with a challenge ... which is, either Jesus was who he said he was, or a complete and utter nut case."
For the record, Bono clarifies, "I believe that Jesus was, you know, the son of God.

Bono: David sang the blues and Jesus did some punk rock
875 words
(Rns) U2 frontman Bono exchanged Bible references and bantered about music, theology and evangelicals’ role in AIDS activism in a recent radio interview with Focus on the Family President Jim Daly.
Growing up in Ireland with a Protestant mother and a Catholic father, Bono imitated C.S. Lewis in “Mere Christianity,” where Lewis argued that Jesus was a lunatic, liar or Lord.

Hollywood power couple Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, who are producing a History Channel series called "The Bible," penned a glib op-ed Thursday in The Wall Street Journal advocating for the Bible to be taught in American's public schools.
"It's time to encourage, perhaps even mandate, the teaching of the Bible in public schools as a primary document of Western civilization," they wrote, adding that it should be done "for the sake of the nation's children."
The column argues that the Bible deserves a place in U.S. public schools because it is "the most influential book of all time," but is not currently taught in schools because of "the powers that be."
Burnett, who is originally from England, is the producer of a number of popular TV series including "Survivor" and "The Celebrity Apprentice." Downey, who is originally from Ireland, is an actor and producer best known for her...

One is best known for playing a kind-hearted angel on a hit television drama. The other is the man behind more than a dozen record-breaking reality shows. But husband and wife Roma Downey ("Touched by an Angel") and Mark Burnett ("Survivor," "The Voice") say their biggest achievement is yet to come -- and it offers a stark contrast to the primetime roles that have made them sought-after Hollywood stars.
Called "The Bible" and set to premiere Sunday on the History Channel, their new production is a 10-hour scripted miniseries that aims to take viewers on a dramatic, special effects-filled journey through the world's most popular book, from the story of Noah's Ark to the Exodus and the life of Jesus.
"We're trying to tell the story of God's love for his people," said Downey, who plays the role of Mary in the five-episode series.

This Week in Ladybits
Do your ladybits feel supremely annoyed this week? I can’t blame them. Our old pal Paul Ryan signed on to co-sponsor the so-called Sanctity of Human Life Act again. Among other things, this bill would allow rapists to sue for parental rights.
The only abortion clinic in the entire 48,430-square-mile state of Mississippi is in real danger of closing.
A bill in Wyoming would ban abortions after six weeks.
The Commonwealth of Virginia will still be the Commonwealth of State-Mandated Unnecessary Ultrasounds, but did narrowly narrowly narrowly vote down a ban on abortions. Trap laws are staying in place, though. Wonkette hears there have been some attempts at shady dealings behind that.
And Rachel Maddow covered the inspiring and scary story of the people who are risking their lives to re-open a women’s health clinic that provides abortion services in Wichita,...

There’s a lot to do at Comic-Con. From panels, screenings, checking out the floor and gawking at cosplayers, it’s pretty much impossible to do even a fraction you want to. But every year, no matter what, I always make it a point to go check out the Raw Publishing booth.
It’s small, not flashy, and usually tucked away. But it’s there where Raw head honchos, Tom Jane (The Punisher, *61, Stander) and Tim Bradstreet, hang out for a good chunk of the week. Selling and signing books, interacting with fans, and generally just being cool dudes.
This year at Comic-Con I had the awesome chance to sit down and chat with Tom and Tim about their current and upcoming projects, as well as a super-secret panel that’s happening this Saturday. Check it out!
Dread:You’ve got something secret going here at Comic-Con, some kind of big top secret project.

Here's an interesting development: Focus on the Family, one of the leading social conservative groups, has come out in favor of immigration reform (which we all know is code for <spooky>Amnesty</spooky>).
"Immigration reform" is also code for ain't never gonna fucking happen, as the combined efforts of George W Bush, John McCain, Ted Kennedy and Barack Obama have yet to accomplish any substantial reform on immigration, a void that has allowed states like Arizona to step in and solve the problem by making looking Hispanic illegal. (Baseball players excepted. Go Diamondbacks!)
Evangies—evangelicals gets old throughout a whole article, trust me—have every reason to support immigration reform. Hispanic immigrants tend to be religious, with many Catholic but more and more going evangelical. Plus, for an organization so in love with the family (no gays) that they put it in their name, it doesn't make much sense for them to...

As far as comic books go I'm not quite as knowledgeable as many of our other fine reviewers here at Geeks of Doom, but I do like to work on that whenever I get the opportunity. So when the chance to check out a wild and wacky comic from actor Dan Fogler called Moon Lake came around, I was excited to take a peek.
The comic is a collection of short stories, and when I say "wild and wacky" I truly mean it. These stories are completely vulgar and graphic and oozing immaturity, and that can...

Is CBS not into the man love?
A gay dating site called ManCrunch.com wants to get in on the Super Bowl Xliv commercial action, but have been told that oops, too late, no more spots are open, reports the New York Post.
ManCrunch spokesman Dominic Friesen is calling Bs: "It's clearly a form of discrimination that we're getting the runaround, that we're not being told the truth. Quite frankly, there is a lot of ad space available -- a lot of the companies that typically advertise during the Super Bowl are not advertising this year."
Check out the ad and see what you think.
Incidentally, CBS has also rejected one of the two GoDaddy.com ads that was presented this year because it appeared homophobic.
This year, the bad economy has forced CBS to reevaluate its stance against running advocacy or political ads (like ones for PETA) during the Super Bowl.

Stefan Hutchinson is a Michael Myers nut, or as he likes to call it, “The Shape behind the Shape”. He burst onto the horror scene back in 2006, directing and co-writing the intricate documentary Halloween: 25 Years Of Terror, featuring behind the scenes interviews with cast and crew from the 2003 Halloween anniversary convention. In 2008, Halloween Comics was presented to the world of comic books with the help of Devils Due Publishing, and Stefan Hutchinson tackled the writing duties for its initial release, Halloween: Nightdance, which was a Fangoria Top 10 book for 2008. He is the prominent writer for Halloween Comics, continuing on with 30 Years Of Terror, Autopsis and The First Death Of Laurie Strode, along with the upcoming The Mark Of Thorn series featuring that mysterious “Man in Black” from Halloween 6. Fangoria caught up Stefan during a major writing session to ask some questions on the successful launch of Halloween Comics,...
