A toxic spill mutates what should be a relaxing summer away from home into a monstrous nightmare for a pair of recently graduated best friends in Toxic Summer, the new comic book series from writer/artist Derek Charm. Ahead of the first issue's release on May 1st from Oni Press, Daily Dead caught up with Derek in a new Q&a feature to discuss his nostalgic comic book series, including its frightfully fun tone, its early 2000s setting, and working with the amazing team at Oni Press to bring Toxic Summer to life!
Thank you for taking the time to answer questions for us, Derek, and congratulations on your new comic book series Toxic Summer! How and when did you initially get the idea for this series?
Derek Charm: Thank you! It was probably about 2 years ago, and I had been developing various comic pitches with writers that were taking a while to get going,...

“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” has received critical acclaim for its progressive take on the popular 1960s Archie Comics character, but fans are disappointed with one change: Salem the cat does not speak. It’s a jarring switch compared to the mouthy, wisecracking feline that inspired countless GIFs from the 1990s sitcom “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.”
Kiernan Shipka, who now plays the titular Sabrina Spellman, said, “It’s nothing like the ‘90s sassy, mean Salem at all. That’s its own thing that we’re not going to try to compete with or be in the slightest because you can’t live up to that in any way. This is more of a subtle sort of nod, I would say, to the old show.”
Salem does talk in Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ comic book, but that wasn’t his original intent. The comic was dark, and a talking cat wasn’t.

Witches' familiars are not household pets. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina finds truth from a feline friend.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina's teen witch Sabrina Spellman, played by Kiernan Shipka, is a student so gifted she is sought by two schools, Greendale High School and the School of Unseen Arts. As a half-witch, she travels, sometimes astrally, in two worlds and has the same problems as the inhabitants of both. She has a dutiful boyfriend, devoted friends, and even more devoted enemies. Like most kids who go to boarding schools, Sabrina isn't allowed to take her pet to school with her. But this is a very special creature, and Sabrina has a very special bond with it. It is her familiar. Sabrina conjures her familiar in the opening episode of the series, which makes the attempt to merge the real magic and traditions of witchcraft with the comic book fantasy of witchery.

Sneak Peek more new footage from the live-action supernatural TV series "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina", based on the "Archie" Comics characters, starring Kiernan Shipka ("Mad Men"), streaming 20 episodes over two seasons on Netflix, starting October 26, 2018:
The series is based on writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's rebooting of Archie Comics' "Sabrina" comic books, delving into the occult origins of the teenager who tries to reconcile her dual nature of being half-witch and half-mortal while protecting her family and the world from the forces of evil.
"Sabrina the Teen-age Witch", was originally created by writer George Gladir and illlustrator Dan DeCarlo...
...debuting in "Archie's Madhouse #22" (Oct. 1962).
Original premise is that young 'Sabrina Spellman' is a 'half-witch', living with her father's two witch sisters, 'Hilda' and 'Zelda Spellman', in the town of 'Greendale'.
Also living with them is the family pet 'Mr. Salem Saberhagen', a male witch turned into a cat as punishment for 'world domination' attempts.

Archie, Sabrina, and Jughead have all received a darker sheen to their overall mythology and Veronica Lodge is the next in line. In the world of Vampironica, Veronica Lodge was bitten by an ancient vampire and must fight her bloodlust before turning the "town with pep" into a land of vampires. We at Daily Dead got the chance to speak with Greg and Megan Smallwood, the sibling duo who write and create artwork for Vampironica from Archie Comics. In this Q&A, we discuss the development of this vampy turn for Veronica, the classic horror-inspired art style, and what fans can look forward to in Vampironica #3, which will hit shelves this month.
I’ve read issues #1 & #2 and Vampironica looks really cool. How did you find yourselves writing and creating artwork for this comic?
Greg Smallwood: I approached the folks at Archie about doing a project with them after working...

I’ve been there from the beginning and, during the early years worked, on the show. We had a vision for the convention and it’s succeeded beyond our wildest dreams. And in many ways … it hasn’t.

There's always been a strange dichotomy to horror as a genre. There's the real, hard-edged, genuinely scary stuff, but also the cheesy and hilarious, where we delight in the misfortune of the characters we watch instead of fearing for them. But where things get really interesting is when those lines get blurred, intentionally or not. That's when you get scary things coming from places you wouldn't expect, or the unintentional comedy that comes from something trying really hard to be scary. With October being the designated month for all things spooky, and Halloween just hours away, now's the perfect time...

The Art of Archie, edited by Victor Gorelick and Craig Yoe, Archie Books, hardcover, 158 pages (oversize), $29.99 retail
O.K. I won’t mince words. This is one hell of a book.
Over the past 72 years there have been perhaps a dozen definitive Archie universe artists: Archie’s co-creator Bob Montana and teammates Bob Bolling, Dan DeCarlo, Joe Edwards, Al Fagaly, Harry Lucey, Dan Parent, Fernando Ruiz, Harry Sahle, Samm Schwartz, Bill Vigoda and Bob White. Unless you’re a dedicated fan it’s easy to take their work for granted, but each has his own distinctive style, a style that usually relates to the time of his tenure. If The Art of Archie: The Covers does nothing else, it teaches us each artist’s individual style and that goes a long, long way towards giving credit where credit is due. Which it is.

Fox has decided to branch out its Animation Domination block by including Animation Domination HD late Saturday nights. The initial announcement of this expansion makes me happy on a number of levels.
The most easily gratified level is the “I like animation” one, which, by now, anyone who reads this column is already familiar. Yes, I am still a fan of animation and that probably will never end. As a medium, animation offers possibilities for storytelling that most other film methods don’t. Your limits consist mainly of whether or not you or someone on your team can actually draw the thing you want to depict. Animation also carries the distinctive hallmarks of its creators more obviously and more readily than a lot of other film. After watching interviews with Chuck Jones, you can’t help but see the man all over Wile E. Coyote and Tom and Jerry when he started directing those cartoons.

Josie Decarlo, the woman who inspired the leader of all-girl cartoon band Josie & The Pussycats, has died.
The widow of animator Dan DeCarlo gave him the idea for his comic strip after wearing a cat costume as part of a cruise ship wardrobe.
While DeCarlo was struggling with his lead character's hairstyle, his wife walked in with a new look, topped off with a bow - and that helped the cartoonist complete his creation.

Josie DeCarlo, the inspiration for singer-guitarist Josie McCoy of the 1970 Hanna-Barbera TV cartoon series "Josie and the Pussycats" and its successors, has died in her sleep. Her age was not immediately available. The blog Big Cartoon News filed the first report on her death, quoting cartoon and comics historian Mark Evanier. He said that Josie was drawn to resemble her by her husband, comic book legend Dan DeCarlo, who died in 2001 at 82. Carley salutes a comic book movie that might not have set the box office alight, but still deserves lots of love. It's Josie And The Pussycats...
It's fair to say we're in a renaissance of comic book heroes making it onto the big screen, with Batman, Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man and many more taking centre stage at a cinema near you.
However, many moons ago, another comic book favourite made the leap to cinemas, Josie And The Pussycats, and although it flopped at the box office, it's come to be a bit of a cult favourite over the years and is proof that you don't have to have superpowers to entertain the pants off your audience.
The basic outline of the film is this. MegaRecords, headed up by the hip but evil Fiona (Parker Posey), is riding high on the wave of success of boy band Du Jour (made up of Seth Green,...

He’s written for comic books ranging from Archie to Batman and The Punisher to Cherry Poptart. He’s authored thousands of nonfiction pieces, he’s just shy of having written 300 short stories, and he’s also the author of the Professor Piers Knight series of Urban Fantasy novels. The first one featuring Knight is Brooklyn Knight, and the second, just out this month and also reviewed here, is Central Park Knight. His novels are blurbed by, of all people, William Shatner, so ya know they have to be pretty amazing–and, they are just that. I’m honored that C.J. has agreed to do the following interview with me–I hope you enjoy reading it!
Professor Crazy: This is indeed a pleasure to be interviewing you, C.J.! I loved reading Brooklyn Knight and Central Park Knight, but before I get to some questions about those two novels,...

“I learned the mechanics of sex from Carl Barks. He was known as the good duck artist (for his work on Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge), but for me he was the good fuck artist.”
Craig Yoe said that last night at the opening of Comics Stripped, an exhibition at the Museum of Sex in (where else?) Manhattan. Yoe is best known out in the real world as the man behind Yoe! Studios, a design outfit that was highly influenced by its founder’s fondness of comics art. The former creative director of the Muppets workshop, in our fannish conclave Craig’s best known as the historian who feverishly documents the relatively hidden nooks and crannies that weave their way through our beloved art form. His more recent books have been published by Idw and Fantagraphics.
Yoe was referring to Bark’s lesser-known semi-erotic work, none of which was published by Disney.
