In films, the leading actor is often referred to as the figure with the majority of screen time, and in most cases, they’re the one who gets the shot at the Best Actor accolade in major Award events. But there have been instances when this wasn’t the case.
Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs
For example, Anthony Hopkins won the Oscar for Best Actor for playing everyone’s favorite cannibal in The Silence of the Lambs, even though he appeared onscreen for a mere 24 minutes. However, in The Godfather‘s case, Marlon Brando nabbed the nod for Best Actor at the Oscars, even though Al Pacino fit that bracket on paper.
Ethan Hawke also found himself on a similar boat after starring opposite Denzel Washington in the 2001 crime thriller Training Day, which earned the latter an Oscar for Best Actor.

Over 50 years later, however, the long-standing debate about whether Pacino beat the game or Brando, holds just as much weight even today. And it looks like it might not get settled anytime soon.

While The Godfather may not be Francis Ford Coppola’s most treasured creation of his, it is nevertheless one of his most showstopping films ever. There is one masterpiece that continues to cast a long, illustrious shadow over the film industry: Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of Mario Puzo’s novel The Godfather.
Isn’t it remarkable how a film can so thoroughly capture the collective imagination, resonating with audiences decade after decade? Steeped in authenticity, the 1972 gangster masterpiece is heralded as one of the most acclaimed films of all time, etching its lines, scenes, and characters into the very fabric of cinematic history.

Take Coppola’s ensemble cast, which starred Diane Keaton, Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, and Robert Duvall. The latter played Tom Hagen, the unofficially adopted son of Vito Corleone, played by Brando. Well, his portrayal of Tom in Paramount Pictures’ series is iconic, and it’s no surprise that his favorite scene from the film revolves around the revelation that he is the adopted son.

“To do a Roman epic set in modern America, I had no idea that the politics of today would make that so relevant,” Francis Ford Coppola said Friday in Cannes about this $120 million 40-years-in-the-making epic Megalopolis.
The movie follows The City of New Rome, an allegory for New York City, in which Adam Driver’s architect Cesar Catilina squares off with a regressive status quo mayor, Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito) as well as radical renegade Clodio Pulcher (Shia Labeouf) in the hopes of building a utopian society.
“What’s happening in America, in our republic, in our democracy is exactly how Rome lost their republic thousands of years ago,” The Godfather filmmaker said during a press conference for the movie after it’s Cannes world premiere on Thursday night.

As audiences take their seats for Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis in Cannes, we have a big update on the status of the movie's theatrical release.
Despite speculation that the legendary Godfather director's self-funded passion project might struggle to find a distributor (there was already some concern before the recent controversies), it's just been announced that the sci-fi epic has been given a global IMAX release.
“The film is going to get an IMAX release,” IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond told the press during a Cannes event earlier today. “One of the things that we pride ourselves on is being filmmaker-friendly. So we’ve committed to Francis to do a global Imax release.”
Gelford added that he'd met with Coppola in Cannes, and that they would most likely wait to see who will distribute the film in the U.S. and when before deciding on a theatrical release date. The film...

When Aubrey Plaza first got the call about her role in Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, she’d literally just stocked up on Godfather-themed keychains and lighters from an actual Godfather gift shop. It should be noted she was not obsessively combing eBay for insane fan memorabilia. In fact, there was a legitimate reason for her purchases: she just happened to be in Taormina, Sicily — the home of The Godfather, if you will — where it was partly shot. And of course there’s a gift shop.
Plaza was, at the time, taking her turn as the maritally-challenged Harper in the second season of the HBO hit series The White Lotus — a role for which she was individually Emmy and Golden Globe nominated. And, when she heard that Coppola wanted to get on Zoom with her, she was also staying in the San Domenico hotel, his old home-from-home during The Godfather shoot.

10. Bill Cutting from Gangs of New York (2002)
Authoritarian, ruthless, and cunning, Daniel Day Lewis’ Bill the Butcher stole the screen in Gangs of New York every time he appeared. His presence alone was menacing enough to make people drop on their knees and pray, and his impeccable skills with the knife only added a flair of danger to the man that already embodied it.
9. Nucky Thompson from Boardwalk Empire (2010–2014)
Nucky’s silver tongue and immaculate looks made him into the most charming type of gangster: the one everyone loves. Francis Ford Coppola is one of the most revered directors in Hollywood. He enjoyed tremendous success with the Godfather franchise, even if the third and final installment polarized the fans. Regardless, the filmmaker won critical acclaim, and it engraved his name in the annals of cinema history.
Coppola can be credited for adapting the book for the big screen so flawlessly, with each role carefully chosen. However, the production for the third film was mired in problems, accentuated by the fact that Robert Duvall refused to return to complete the trilogy.

Francis Ford Coppola established himself as an esteemed director quite early on in his career. He put together an incredible lineup that brought Mario Puzo’s novel to life, with Al Pacino and Marlon Brando leading the cast.

Since the February 2nd episode of Friday Night SmackDown, The Rock has made a return to WWE programming, hinting at his regular appearances leading up to WrestleMania 40. His ongoing feud with Cody Rhodes implies that The Great One will play a significant role in WWE in the coming weeks. With that said, there was also a time when The Great One refused to travel with his old tag team partner, due to one big reason.

Fans of Frank Herbert’s Dune saga agree: The first book is extraordinary — a planet-hopping hero’s journey with compelling characters, riveting action set-pieces, and clear story and character arcs. For all the talk that Dune was impossible to adapt, the core elements to make great cinema have always been in the 1965 book.
But Herbert’s other Dune books? Well …
The remaining books have their fans and detractors, but the general consensus is the saga never comes close to achieving the dramatic heights of the first novel. Dune director Denis Villeneuve himself has said the books become increasingly “esoteric” and therefore he only wants to adapt the next one, Dune Messiah. He is said to be nearly finished with a script for a potential Dune: Part Three. But Messiah is has plenty of challenges, too.

The classic show “The Sopranos” began its life on HBO on January 10, 1999, single handedly launching the Golden Age of Cable Drama. It’s difficult to recall now, but when the show premiered, HBO was not yet HBO, and original programming outside of network primetime was still in its infancy. Creator David Chase crafted a series at once dark and comedic, violent and emotionally vibrant. It introduced the world to entertainment’s ultimate antihero in Italian-American mob boss Tony Soprano, played with power, pathos and perturbation by James Gandolfini. Beset by depression and panic attacks, he showed us what “The Godfather” never did: a gangster in therapy, regularly visiting the office of New Jersey psychotherapist Dr. Jennifer Melfi (Lorraine Bracco) to download his many troubles and come to terms with a toxic mother Livia (Nancy Marchand). Tony’s long-suffering wife Carmela (pitch-perfect work from Edie Falco) and precocious daughter Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) completed his female-surrounding quartet.

On Dec. 20, 1990, Francis Ford Coppola unveiled The Godfather: Part III at its premiere at the Academy Theater in Beverly Hills. The film went on to gross $136 million globally and nab seven Oscar nominations at the 63rd Academy Awards. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
It’s business, and personal. A complex depiction of Michael Corleone’s dying-days attempt to cement the family in the “legitimate” business world and attain spiritual redemption, this third installment of the Corleone Family chronicle is a full-bodied, albeit somber dramatic orchestration.
However, legitimacy has its price — respectability exacts a grayness and a tempering of one’s style and substance — and this splendidly conceived, although often confusing saga, is itself vulnerable to the dramatic doldrums of Michael’s venture into “respectable” dominions.

Like it or hate it, Animal is here to stay! The Sandeep Reddy Vanga action-drama is certainly the most talked-about Indian film at the moment, thanks to its controversial subject matter. The audience reactions to the film have been polarizing, ranging from “harbinger of toxic misogyny” to “insanely glorious action-spectacle.” If Animal hasn’t worked for you, then the best course of action would be to stay away and move on, but if the film has turned out to be your jam and you’re done with all the discoursing and arguing on the internet, then you are probably looking for similar films to vibe with. No two films are quite the same, but I have made an attempt here to make a list of movies that might remind you of Vanga’s Animal, or at least some aspect of it. And no, this list doesn’t have Godfather and Kabir Singh,...

Sandeep Vanga Reddy’s blood-soaked Bollywood epic “Animal,” starring Ranbir Kapoor, emerged as the No. 1 film globally with $42.1 million, according to data published by ComScore.
“Animal” released across 38 global territories. The worldwide gross total includes $6.1 million in North America where it released across 850 locations and opened at No. 7. In India, the film opened at No. 1, grossing $28.8 million over the weekend.
In “Animal,” Ranbir Kapoor plays the son of India’s richest man who takes on an antagonist played by Bobby Deol (“Ashram”). The cast also includes Rashmika Mandanna (“Pushpa: The Rise – Part 1”).
Like Reddy’s previous films, the Telugu-language “Arjun Reddy” (2017) and its Hindi-language remake “Kabir Singh” (2019), “Animal” is a study of toxic masculinity. Reviewing the film for Variety, Dennis Harvey wrote: “There’s the whole issue of toxic masculinity, which Vanga’s previous efforts were decried for celebrating. ‘Animal’ is too ridiculous to take grave offense at,...

Ozzy Osbourne is opening up about his health, whether he has a fear of dying or not, and the one thing he still holds out hope for.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone UK, the “Godfather of Heavy Metal” revealed that a tumor was found in one of his vertebrae while undergoing a fourth spinal surgery. The procedure was to fix damage caused by a fall in 2019, which dislodged metal rods he had put into his body after a previous quad bike crash in 2003.
“It’s really knocked me about,” Osbourne said. “The second surgery went drastically wrong and virtually left me crippled. I thought I’d be up and running after the second and third, but with the last one they put a fucking rod in my spine. They found a tumor in one of the vertebrae, so they had to dig all that out too. Actor Diane Keaton became a part of film history after working alongside the likes of Al Pacino in The Godfather. But while on set, she never felt like she mattered in the feature in comparison to her co-stars.

One of Keaton’s career breakthroughs was the 1972 picture The Godfather. Keaton ended up playing the wife of Al Pacino’s famous mobster Michael Corleone, which led to a brief relationship between the pair. The Francis Ford Coppola feature was based on the Mario Puzo novel of the same name, which already recruited a sizable fanbase. But Keaton admitted in an interview with People that she knew next to nothing about The Godfather’s source material.

Actor Bill Murray helped launch the iconic Ghostbusters franchise. But after doing the first two movies, he confided that he’d only return for another Ghostbusters film under one condition.
Bill Murray wanted out of the ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise Bill Murray |m Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
It took a while for the beloved Ghostbusters franchise to get a sequel to the second movie. It wasn’t until 2016’s Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters: Afterlife that the series finally managed to continue in some form.
But before those two movies, a third Ghostbusters film had been in the works for decades. When a sequel was pitched much earlier, there was hope that Murray would reprise his role. The film’s director, Ivan Reitman, once came up with a film that would focus on Murray and Sigourney Weaver’s fictional child in the movie.
“Bill and Sigourney’s kid, Oscar, is a postgrad student, and weird things start to happen.

With her latest film Priscilla earning Sofia Coppola some of the best reviews of her career, the Oscar winner is undoubtedly proud. But one person who might want Sofia to reevaluate it in the future is her father, Francis Ford Coppola, who knows a thing or two (or more…) about revisiting his works.
Speaking with Rolling Stone ahead of the release of Priscilla – which sits at a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, behind only 2003’s Lost in Translation – Sofia Coppola said she is continuously nagged by Francis Ford about tweaking her movies long after their release. “My dad loves to recut his movies, and he’s always saying, ‘You can do that!’…I don’t have any desire to. I feel like they are what they are, even with their baby fat and awkwardness, that’s what I was thinking about at that time.”
Sofia is absolutely correct that Francis Ford has...

Clad in his familiar accessories of dark suspenders and tortoise-shell glasses, Canal+ Group Chairman & CEO Maxime Saada cuts a decorous and professorial figure, though the two framed posters of “Scarface” and “The Godfather” that decorate his office walls offer a slightly better insight into the chairman’s inner passions.
“[I follow] a logic of intensity,” Saada tells Variety. “As a payTV player, our main objective is not to broadcast content to the widest possible audience in order to lure to advertizers, nor to aim for consensus. We want to inspire passion and fervor, because reactions of ‘not bad’ do not encourage subscriptions.”
Saada is being honored at Mipcom with the Variety Vanguard Award.
Since taking the reins eight years ago, Saada has looked for new subscribers all across the globe, transforming the emblematic French brand into a significant international player that has grown from 11 million (almost entirely European) clients in 2015 to last year’s tally of 25.5 million,...

Well, “Star Wars” fans, the rumors were true. In a new interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, screenwriter David S. Goyer confirmed he wrote not just one but two unproduced scripts for Lucasfilm. And one of those projects was a movie about Jabba The Hutt for Guillermo del Toro. For fans who don’t remember, Gdt hinted he wanted to make a “The Godfather“-like movie for the Tattooine crime lord five or so years ago.

Robert Englund doing a demented Colonel Sanders impression. Lin Shaye putting on a deadly song and dance routine. Enough politically incorrect elements to offend pretty much everybody. Buckets of gore. Gratuitous nudity. And a cameo appearance by Eli Roth, playing his Cabin Fever character. Put all of this together and you get 2001 Maniacs (watch it Here). The director calls it a “splatstick” movie. Splatter combined with slapstick comedy. We call it The Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.

Clarence Avant, the judicious manager, entrepreneur, facilitator and adviser who helped launch or guide the careers of Quincy Jones, Bill Withers and many others and came to be known as the “Black Godfather” of music and beyond, has died. He was 92.
Avant, inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, died Sunday at his home in Los Angeles, according to a family statement released Monday.
Avant’s achievements were both public and behind the scenes, as a name in the credits, or a name behind the names. Born in a segregated hospital in North Carolina, he became a man of lasting and wide-ranging influence, in part by minding two pieces of advice from an early mentor, the music manager Joe Glaser: Never let on how much you know, and ask for as much money as possible, “without stuttering.”

Artificial intelligence has leveled up – and now it’s even catfishing.
In recent years, AI has been put to use by making deep fakes of politicians and celebrities, fooling those who have little to no knowledge about advanced technology, and while AI can be helpful to some, it can be harmful to many others. Earlier this month, authors like Sarah Silverman sued companies for using their books to feed and train AI responses to sound more human.
Conversations aren’t the only things AI has infiltrated, though. Many of the beautiful influencers online are not real, and those behind the fantastical faces use them to scam desperate men for money.
In April, Redditors were scammed by a woman named Claudia, who turned out to be an AI creation made by two computer science students.
The two students succeeded and eventually earned at least $100 before they were found out. Others garner much more.

Francis Ford Coppola achieved cinema perfection with The Godfather… and two years later, he did it again with The Godfather Part II. The two films remain some of the very best movies of all time, but much like Alien and Aliens, you might have a favourite. As for Al Pacino, The Godfather star clearly prefers the first movie.
Al Pacino recently sat down with David Rubenstein at the 92nd Street Y, New York for the People Who Inspire Us series. When Rubenstein asked Pacino if he thought The Godfather Part II was superior to the first movie, the actor replied, “No, I don’t. I really think it’s more — what would you call it — artistic or something, I don’t know. I don’t mean to play it down and be overly modest because I star in it with Bob de Niro, but at the same time, it’s a different film.

There are a great many people out there who like to say that “The Godfather Part II” is superior to “The Godfather.” Al Pacino is not one of them. The 82-year-old actor went uptown to the 92nd St. Y on Wednesday to sit for an hour-long schmooze as part of their “People Who Inspire Us” series. During the conversation, he dished on a number of subjects, including the movie that sent his career into orbit.
“You see, ‘The Godfather’ is more entertaining,” he said. “‘Godfather II’ is this study, this personal thing for Francis [Ford Coppola]. ‘Godfather I,’ I saw it recently, it’s always got two or three things going on in a scene. While the eye-rolling cheese of Batman & Robin certainly has its defenders, movie adaptations of the Caped Crusader have largely adhered to one rule: be serious. Since that 1997 movie ended the four-movie run that began with the relatively dark and gritty Batman from 1989, every subsequent big-screen take on the Dark Knight has been increasingly grumpy and grounded. The Christopher Nolan Dark Knight trilogy starring Christian Bale gave thorough explanations for every part of the mythos, Zack Snyder’s Batman played by Ben Affleck showed us what Batman would be like in a dystopia filled with adherents of Ayn Rand’s Wikipedia page, and Robert Pattinson’s Batman writes dark journal entries about the filth infecting Gotham City a la Frank Miller.
There is, of course, one shining exception to the rule. Lego Batman, voiced with pitch-perfect pompousness by Will Arnett, made his debut as a supporting character in The Lego Movie and The Lego Movie 2,...

Top Gun: Maverick soared at the global box office this summer — and the big-budget blockbuster is also flying high after winning an Oscar for best sound.
The Tom Cruise starrer also earned Academy Awards nominations for best picture, best adapted screenplay and best original song (for Lady Gaga and BloodPop’s “Hold My Hand”) in addition to two Golden Globes nods, including best motion picture in the drama category. It’s been nearly 50 years since a southpaw from Philly went the distance with Apollo Creed. Back then it was a genuinely euphoric moment in cinema, so feel-good that Rocky over-performed at the box office and Oscars, beating out flicks like Network and Taxi Driver for Best Picture, and making Sylvester Stallone one of the biggest movie stars of his generation. British director Mike Hodges, known for directing “Get Carter”, “Flash Gordon”, “Croupier” and more, died at his home in Dorset, England, on Dec. 17. He was 90.
Hodges’ longtime friend, Mike Kaplan, confirmed his death to Et calling the late director “a great friend and a great filmmaker.”
“For a part of his career, he was under-appreciated, and he is not anymore,” the film producer shared. “‘Get Carter’ was a huge success all over the world. He had a great sense of humour. All of his movies were entrenched with humour and personality.”
Born in Bristol, England in 1932, Hodges first became an accountant before doing his required military service by serving on a British minesweeper. He began his career in show business as a teleprompter operator for British television.
Landing work on ABC’s “Armchair Theatre”, Hodges rose quickly to become a producer and director, entering the international film scene with 1971’s...
