On Tuesday, the academy's Board of Governors brought in a new rule for this year's Oscars that is aimed at preventing another embarassing disqualification. Last year, a brouhaha erupted after Bruce Broughton -- a one-time governor (2003 - 2012) and current executive committee member -- emailed other members of the music branch during the nomination period to bring his title track "Alone Yet Not Alone" to their attention. His lobbying must have worked as this tune, heard in a little-seen film, reaped a Best Song bid. -Break- Join in the fierce debate about the early Oscar contenders going on right now in our red-hot forums Broughton, who lost his 1985 Score bid for "Silverado" to John Barry for "Out of Africa," penned this tune with lyricist Dennis Spiegel for a Christian film that focused on the hardships facing 18th century settlers in the Ohio Valley. Evangelical minister Joni Eareckson Tada, a quadripile...

It might have been disqualified from Academy Award consideration, but the song "Alone Yet Not Alone" made quite the impact at the Movieguide Faith and Value Awards Gala. Joni Eareckson Tada's performance of the song was rewarded with a standing ovation and left many in the audience teary eyed.
Tada was invited to sing at the Movieguide awards after her song was pulled from the Best Original Song category for this year's Oscars. The disqualification came after the song's composer, Bruce Broughton, sent an email to around 70 Academy members urging them to listen to the song. Because Broughton is a former governor and current committee member, the Academy decided that his actions could undermine the integrity of Oscar voting. In a statement released by the Academy, it was stressed that the composers and lyricists are intended to be anonymous so that the nominees are based soley on acheivement. Despite all their rationalizations,...

At the very least, the Academy Awards are shaping up to be an excellent showcase of musical talents. Shortly after, the Academy said that Karen O also will perform "The Moon Song" from Spike Jonze.s Her during the telecast. This means all four Oscar-nominated songs will be performed live during the March 2 telecast, as Pharrell said he.ll perform "Happy" from Despicable Me 2 and . our favorite . Idina Menzel announced she will be singing "Let It Go" from Frozen. Duck Dynasty, Frozen, Iron Man 3, Grace Unplugged and The Bible producer Mark Burnett were the big film and TV winners at the 22nd Annual Movieguide Faith & Values Awards Feb. 7 at the Hilton Universal City, a ceremony filmed for a one-hour Reelz Channel special to air Mar. 1-3, counterprogramming the Oscars. Polished performances by Richie Sambora, Billy Ray Cyrus, Jacob Latimore, A.J. By Robert W. Welkos It was only last July that Cheryl Boone Isaacs, a long-time, behind-the-scenes Hollywood publicist and marketing executive, was elected president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The first African American and third woman to lead the prominent movie industry organization that each year hands out the Oscars, Isaacs’ election provided proof, if any was still required, that the traditionally white and male AMPAS membership was becoming more diversified. An academy veteran, she had served in various posts inside the organization’s hierarchy and produced last year’s Governors Awards. But now Isaacs tenure as president is being buffeted by controversy over a decision by the academy’s board of governors to disqualify the song Alone Yet Not Alone from a small, faith-based movie of the same name that few have seen. How deftly she navigates the controversy could prevent the dispute from tarnishing the Oscars.

It’s a beautiful anthem of faith and hope, but “Alone Yet Not Alone” will no longer be considered for the Best Original Song Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards.
Composer Bruce Broughton is actually a former governor of the AMPAS music division, and he’s been accused of improperly influencing the voters to listen to his modern-day hymn, sung by quadriplegic author/radio host Joni Eareckson Tada.
Fearful that the Academy members would simply overlook the song, given the fact that it’s from a Christian film, Broughton sent out emails to draw attention to it.
He explained, "So, yeah, I wrote some people and said, 'Could you just take a look?' That was literally the extent of the campaigning. I received in the mail songs from other films that were pressed and recorded CDs. We didn’t do anything like that at all."

A Christian organization called Movieguide, known for its in-depth analysis of hundreds of movies and TV shows each year, is hoping to make some hay of Oscar's unusual decision to take back its best song nomination for Alone Yet Not Alone. Hence, on Thursday, Movieguide said it has hastily booked Joni Eareckson Tada to sing the no-longer-nominated song at its annual event, dubbed the 22nd annual Movieguide Faith & Values Awards Gala. Eareckson Tada is a 64-year-old quadriplegic Christian broadcaster who runs a charity providing wheelchairs to children. She is not a professional singer, yet the Alone Yet

Nestled among tracks from U2, Pharrell, Karen O and a monster Disney ballad was a peculiar addition to the nominees for Best Original Song at this year's Oscars: "Alone Yet Not Alone," the theme song to a Christian film of the same name, sung by evangelical author and radio host Joni Eareckson Tada, who is quadriplegic. Even during the hazy early morning announcements, it stuck out – a nomination for a film no one had ever heard of for a song no one had ever heard of in a particularly (and literally) vocal category. The Oscar nomination for Best Song for “Alone Yet Not Alone,” as performed by Joni Eareckson Tada with music by Bruce Broughton and lyrics by Dennis Spiegel and from the film Alone Yet Not Alone (because why not?) was weird from the start, and the truth behind it was swiftly outed by the eagle-eyed and –eared. While plenty of movie writers and entertainment sites were quick to pick up on the weird choice and what actually motivated it, Guy Lodge over at In Contention nailed it early, figuring out that the film had been given a limited release in September, aimed at the Christian market (as Lodge shared, “production company Enthuse Entertainment describes themselves as producing ‘God-honoring, faith-based...

The Academy has rescinded the Original Song Oscar nomination for 'Alone Yet Not Alone' by Bruce Broughton and Dennis Spiegel.
The surprise nomination for the song from the film of the same name was withdrawn after Bruce Broughton - a former governor and current Music Branch executive committee member - emailed members of the branch to highlight his nomination.
"No matter how well-intentioned the communication, using one's position as a former governor and current executive committee member to personally promote one's own Oscar submission creates the appearance of an unfair advantage," said Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs.
Broughton's actions were deemed inconsistent with the Academy's promotional regulations and a threat to the "fair and ethical" conduct of the awards.
"I'm devastated," Broughton told The Hollywood Reporter. "I indulged in the simplest grassroots campaign and it went against me when the song started getting attention.

The Academy has revoked Alone Yet Not Alone’s nomination for Best Original Song amid controversy.
“Alone Yet Not Alone,” the original song performed by Evangelical minister, Joni Eareckson Tada, in the religious film.
The nomination in itself was a complete surprise, as Alone Yet Not Alone is a very small film with a very limited release. It had been reported that a film that did not receive a nomination for Best Original Song hired a private investigator and petitioned the Academy to remove the song from consideration because the film had not complied with print promotion rules the Academy has for any potential nominees. At the time of the report, the Academy remained firm in their decision and stated that “Alone Yet Not Alone” would remain on the ballot.

The Best Original Song Oscar category is attracting it’s fair share of drama as an unnamed snubbed film is contesting the eligibility of nominee "Alone Yet Not Alone."
'Alone Yet Not Alone' Surprising Nomination
"Alone Yet Not Alone," from the film of the same name, shocked many when it was announced as a nominee, and it seems a film whose original song was not nominated took offense that Alone Yet Not Alone was nominated.
One point of contention is that the song’s music is written by Bruce Broughton, who was a member of the Academy and represented the music branch for 9 years, from 2003-2012, on the Academy board of governors. The spiritual, Christian-themed film, also had an incredibly small release, sparking rumors that the only reason the song was nominated was because of Broughton's involvement.

As a mini-controversy develops about an Oscar-nominated song from a micro-budget Christian film called Alone Yet Not Alone that few people saw, the singer, Joni Eareckson Tada, is confessing that she’s as surprised as anyone that the Academy has recognized such an obscure song. Eareckson Tada is a 64-year-old quadriplegic who runs a charitable organization that distributes wheelchairs to kids in developing nations. She’s a devout Christian who has little to do with the entertainment industry and rarely goes to the movies. She grew up singing hymns but has no professional training. And her lung

Eyebrows were raised with both surprise and suspicion yesterday when it was announced that the track “Alone Yet Not Alone” — from a faith-based film of the same name — had gained an Oscar nomination, beating out tunes by both Taylor Swift and Coldplay, among others. The surprise was due to the fact that very few people had heard of either the song or its parent film. The suspicion? That the song’s cowriter Bruce Broughton had used his position as a former chief of the Academy’s music section to egregiously game the voting system and convince people to tick the box for his song.
