Over two nights, Janet Jackson’s story is being told in detail — by none other than Jackson herself.
Airing simultaneously on Lifetime and A&e, Janet Jackson is a four-part docuseries that mixes a traditional retelling of a pop star’s life from childhood until now with some juicy revelations; the series straddles the difficult line between rare intimacy from an extremely private public figure and the tight control that comes from letting said figure dictate that narrative. (The first two episodes premiere tonight; the second two air on January 29th.

On its release 25 years ago, on May 18, 1993, there was nothing lower-case about Janet Jackson’s album “janet.” except its title.
Jackson’s previous two albums for A&M Records, “Control” (1986) and “Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814” (1989), had reached No. 1 on the national charts and been certified for sales of 11 million total units. No longer a modestly successful R&B singer, she was a major crossover talent whose commercial profile had begun to rival that of her older brother Michael.
An intense bidding war for Jackson’s services ensued in 1991, with Virgin Records prevailing with a then-unprecedented and headline-making bid that the label’s founder Richard Branson later identified as $25 million.
Branson, who had to scramble to assemble the financing for the deal, wrote in 2016, “Signing Janet would confirm Virgin Records’ position as the world’s sexiest record company. I was damned if I was going to let the caution of our bankers stop us.

Janet Jackson's split from husband #3 may have significant financial implications. Both Janet and Wissam Al Mana are wealthy, but he far more than she. He has an estimated net worth of $1 billion. She's worth an estimated $175 mil. Janet, who had a prenup with husband #2 Rene Elizondo, almost certainly had a prenup with Al Mana. Such prenups are typically structured -- so the longer the marriage, the bigger the settlement. Prenups typically have 5 and 10 year marks,...

Janet Jackson is delaying her ill-fated tour because she and her husband are "planning our family".
The Rhythm Nation singer, 49, first rescheduled the start of her Unbreakable World Tour so she could undergo throat surgery, then in March she postponed her European dates three weeks before the trek was due to start.
Janet has now announced she is delaying the entire second leg of her tour, which was set to kick off in Las Vegas in May (16), because doctors have advised her to rest so she can start a family.

Not every fairy tale in Hollywood has a happy ending.
In Hollywood some marriages start and end in the blink of an eye – and no one knows this better than these starlets. Here's a look at the forgotten first husbands of some very famous women.
1. Damon Thomas (Kim Kardashian)
Before her lavish wedding extravaganza to Kanye West this past May and Kris Humphries in 2012, music producer Damon Thomas was the first to put a ring on it. Kardashian was only 19 years old when she wed Thomas in 2000. They divorced three years later.
2. Ojani Noa (Jennifer Lopez)
Jenny from the block has had her fair share of J.Lovers but Ojani Noa was the lucky lad who first walked Lopez down the aisle in 1997. Their marriage was short lived, however, and they divorced 11 months later. She was later married to Cris Judd from 2001-2002 and Marc Anthony from 2004-2014 (they separated in 2011).

Janet Jackson is apparently ready to give married life another shot: She's engaged to billionaire boyfriend Wissam Al Mana and the couple are planning a spring wedding in Qatar.
According to Us Weekly, citing sources close to the Jackson family, Jackson received a "huge, expensive ring" from Al Mana earlier in the year. The couple's wedding plans sound equally luxurious and are said to involve flying the entire Jackson clan to Qatar by private jet and the creation of a custom menu by a renowned chef.
Us also reports that Jackson wants children, and is ready to adopt if necessary.

Congratulations! Janet Jackson — Ms. Jackson, if you’re nasty — is engaged to her billionaire boyfriend of two years!
Wissam Al Mana gifted Janet Jackson with ”a huge, expensive [engagement] ring” earlier this year, according to a new report. The two lovebirds are currently planning a spring 2013 wedding.
“She’s afraid it will get lost, so she keeps it locked up!” a source tells Us Weekly of Janet’s engagement ring.
Janet and 37-year-old Wissam’s nuptials are set for this spring in Qatar and the “All For You” singer’s fiance will spare no expense for their wedding!
The affair “will cost millions,” a second Jackson insider reveals. “He is flying in all of Janet’s friends and family on private jets.” Janet has seven siblings and more than 20 nieces and nephews, so we have a feeling the wedding Will cost a lot of money.

Janet Jackson has broken her silence to fire back at allegations she has a secret teen daughter. On Friday, Young DeBarge, the brother of Jackson's ex-husband James DeBarge, said in a radio interview to promote his album that Jackson and his brother had an 18-year-old daughter named Renee. The teens' existence was kept secret for so long because she had been raised by Jackson's older sister Rebbie, Young DeBarge told New York radio station Hot 97. But in a terse statement released to TV show Access Hollywood, Jackson hits out, "I do not have a child and all allegations saying so are false." Jackson family attorney Brian Oxman admits the story first came up a few years ago and he asked his clients then if there was any truth to the allegations. He says, "The answer is no way, no how. From the sisters to the mother, every last one of them said it never happened." Jackson and James DeBarge, a singer in the former R&B family group DeBarge, were married for three months in 1984, when Jackson was just 18. Jackson secretly married Rene Elizondo Jr. in 1991. They separated in 1999. She is now dating rap mogul Jermaine Dupri.

Janet Jackson will have to go to trial over the pre-nuptial settlement with ex-husband Rene Elizondo. Los Angeles judge Richard Denner ruled on Friday that Jackson and Elizondo would have to return to court. According to the prenup the couple arranged for their secret marriage in 1990, each gets to keep whatever assets they brought into the marriage. Superstar Janet brought in a lot more money, and now Elizondo is pinning his hopes on getting the pre-nup tossed out of court so he can get his hands on her cash. Elizondo's lawyer Manley Freid says, "It could mean substantially more money for him in the end." The trial is expect to begin in March of 2002.
