Ippei Mizuhara, the former interpreter of Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani, has been charged with bank fraud after allegedly stealing $16 million from his former employer. U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada announced the federal charge on Thursday.
The federal complaint lays out that Mizuhara placed around 19,000 wagers between Dec. 2021 and Jan. 2024, that he won around $142 million on these wagers while losing around $182 million — meaning he was around $40 million in the hole. The complaint adds that the records do not show any bets on baseball games.

This Fool’s days at Hulu have come to an end.
The Disney-owned streamer has opted to cancel This Fool after a two-season run, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Chris Estrada created the series and starred as Julio Lopez, a 30-year-old who lives with his family and works at a gang rehab center.
Sources say This Fool will remain on Hulu’s platform after the streamer put a big marketing push behind both seasons of the series, which despite strong reviews, failed to find an audience large enough to justify a third season. Season two last aired in July 2023.
This Fool was produced in-house by Disney’s ABC Signature and was exec produced by Estrada, showrunner Jonathan Groff (Black-ish), Fred Armisen, Pat Bishop, Matt Ingebretson and Jake Weisman.

Netflix Mexico has unveiled a rousing new slate in production this year that includes the series debut of Luis Estrada (“¡Que viva México!”), a new pic from Rodrigo Garcia (“Familia”), another series from hit-maker José Ignacio “Chascas” Valenzuela (“Who Killed Sara?”) and “La Reina del Sur”’s Kate del Castillo unusually toplining a comedy.
Also leading the pack is series “Gringo Hunters,” produced by Woo Films and Redrum in co-production with Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment in association with The Washington Post.
Said Francisco Ramos, VP of content for Latin America: “We begin 2024 by reaffirming our commitment to show Mexico, just as it is, on Netflix. As far as the music documentary is an extension of a brand experience, Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero provides an illuminating look behind the scenes, demystifying the artist while also existing within the spirit of their on-screen persona. A boundary breaker, Lil Nas X (birth name Montero Lamar Hill) embodies a seductive enigma, allowing his co-directors Carlos López Estrada and Zac Manuel to interview him in bed at one point. The artist rose to fame with his country rap single “Old Town Road” before coming out on Twitter/X in what some viewed as a betrayal. Estrada and Manuel thankfully save us from Rudy Giuliani’s podcast commentary after his unapologetically queer album Montero drops with its first single “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).”

“Modestly speaking, we’ve tried to create a culture at Movistar Plus+ which attracts talent. We have a lot of respect for what creators want to tell and believe in them,” Domingo Corral, Movistar Plus+ director of fiction and entertainment, has said.
One case in point is Berto Romero, whose latest series, “The Other Side” (“El otro lado”), world premieres at Spain’s San Sebastian Festival on Sunday.
Romero broke out with star turns on Andreu Buenafuente’s “Buenafuente” and “Leit Motiv,” two late-night mainstays on Movistar Plus+ produced by El Terrat, owned by The Mediapro Studio from 2019. Over 2018-19, his first fiction series, the Terrat-produced “Look What You’ve Done,” a fresh comedic take on the tribulations of parenting, ran for three seasons on Movistar Plus+. Now “The Other Side” weighs in as a step-up in ambition for Romero.

Sonoro and Tenderfoot TV launch The Estate on September 13, 2023, a new true crime documentary podcast that follows host Alex Estrada as he tries to solve a family mystery: Was his dad involved in a murder?
In the early evening on New Year’s Eve, in 1973, a 34-year-old man was found bleeding to death on a downtown street in Stockton, California. Directors Carlos López Estrada and Zac Manuel were thankful to have not learned about the bomb threat that delayed the TIFF premiere of their documentary “Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero” until after the screening had ended.
“We were just hanging out in the green room and my agent showed me the [headline] and I was like, ‘Oh, no, that’s not true. We were just here. That’s really funny that they posted that,’” said Estrada.
When he showed the report to the rapper and his bodyguard, “They were like, ‘Oh yeah, it’s true. I was like, ‘Oh, whoa.’ I showed it to Zac and we couldn’t believe that we were oblivious to this,” said the director. “I had gotten a couple texts from some friends in LA, and they were like, ‘Did you see the news?’ And I was like, ‘I actually didn’t know,’” said Manuel.

The story of Lil Nas X’s rise from internet shitposter to one of our most innovative pop stars testifies to the musician’s tenacity, strategy and unwavering faith in himself. The Georgia native was only 20 years old when “Old Town Road,” his infectious country-trap song, went viral in 2019. Videos of children, teens and adults belting “I’m gonna take my house to the old town road” mushroomed across the internet. More than writing a hit, Lil Nas X encapsulated a new kind of road to stardom.
It’s a shame, then, that Carlos López Estrada and Zac Manuel’s plodding documentary Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero doesn’t probe its subject more. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, is an anthemic document organized around Lil Nas X’s tour of the same name and split into three loose acts. The world premiere of ” “Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero” at the Toronto Film Festival was forced to be delayed when a bomb threat was called in, reportedly targeting the premiere and the rapper himself.
Variety reports that the screening — which was scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall — was pushed back by the bomb threat, which sources say had a homophobic intent, aimed at Lil Nas X for being Black and gay.
Carlos López Estrada and Zac Manuel, the doc’s directors, arrived on the red carpet with editor Andrew Morrow, with Lil Nas X arriving shortly after; however, as his car pulled up, organizers told him to stay put while a security sweep of the venue was undertaken.

On the eve of heading up to Canada this week to attend the Toronto Film Festival, where his documentary “Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero” has its world debut Saturday night, pop superstar Lil Nas X was playing it nonchalant about stepping outside the music realm a bit to be the center of a splashy event in the movie world. “Not really,” he answers, when asked whether it means anything special to him to have a gala premiere at North America’s biggest film event. “I mean, I’m excited to go there and to see what people think, and also, I’ve never been to a film festival, so maybe I’ll meet people and and build some future relationships. With “Dancing with the Stars” returning for a 32nd season this fall on ABC after switching last year to Disney+, there’s a long list of celebrities who deserve a chance on the dance floor. Two of my past suggestions came true: Frankie Muniz (who came in third on season 25) and Kel Mitchell (who came in second on season 28). Below are six male stars I think the show should consider inviting to compete for the next Mirror Ball Trophy. Do you agree with these picks? Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post to let us know who you’d most like to see on “DWTS.” And feel free to sound off in the comments about what other stars you’d like to see when the show comes back in September.

Conversion Therapy Podcast ‘Dear Alana’ Leads Tenderfoot TV Slate Alongside Weekly Series & Spinoffs
Exclusive: Tenderfoot TV, the podcast company behind series such as To Live and Die in LA and Up and Vanished, is expanding its slate.
The company has unveiled a raft of new series, including Dear Alana, a dual-narrative series created by Simon Kent Fung about the life and tragic death of devout youth Alana Chen, whose aspiration to become a nun led her to conversion therapy, and a number of weekly series and spinoffs of existing shows.
Dear Alana is an eight-episode series that sees Kent Fung explore the psychological theories behind conversion therapy today, as he goes behind the scenes of an ascendant brand of American Catholicism sweeping college campuses now, and unearths the complicated boundary between earnest faith and spiritual manipulation, the promise of perfection and the price we pay to belong. It features Chen’s extensive journals, which reveal her hidden struggles with her sexuality and faith.

Days after Vietnam banned Warner Bros’ upcoming Barbie due to a scene depicting a map of the South China Sea with the “nine-dash line” that is contested by its government, the Philippines is now weighing whether it will follow suit.
The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board of the Philippines on Tuesday posted a notice to its website reading: “We confirm that the Board has reviewed the film Barbie today, 04 July 2023. At this time, the assigned Committee on First Review is deliberating on the request of Warner Brothers F.E. Inc. for a Permit to Exhibit.” It did not explain the reason for the statement.
The controversial “nine-dash line” represents China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea. Vietnam, Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei all have competing claims. The U-shaped line was repudiated in an international arbitration ruling by a court in The Hague in 2016, however, China refuses to recognize the ruling.

¡Que viva México!, Luis Estrada’s new political satire -- and his first film in almost a decade -- will have a wide theatrical release in Mexico, on Thursday, March 23. It’ll be distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing International. ¡Que viva México! was financed by Netflix but, ultimately, Estrada rejected the original plan to show the three-hour-plus picture only in select theaters. Netflix had made an exception to put Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths in commercial theaters, so Estrada sought the same for his film. When the company refused to do so, he himself bought the theatrical rights, though ¡Que viva México! will eventually join Netflix’s catalog. ¡Que viva México! promises to be in the same vein as other Estrada...

Silvana Estrada is still processing her two Latin Grammy nominations. "It's still shocking," she says, recalling when she first found out about the nominations in September. More shocking still was the way she found out. In the middle of her second major tour, the 25-year-old singer and songwriter's 16-hour flight from Madrid ended in an emergency detour in Dallas. She was tired, stressed, and wondering how she would make it to her next stop in LA when her phone rang.
"[My friend] was like, 'Congratulations on your Grammy nominations.' And I was like, 'Oh my God!' And then I lost service, so I spent the next three hours in complete silence," Estrada tells Popsugar with a laugh. So, for three hours, Silvana sat alone in the Dallas airport with no one to talk to and nothing to do except reflect on the trajectory of her career and the journey that...

Another beloved Japanese animation film is getting a live-action adaptation. Makoto Shinkai's breathtaking 2016 sci-fi anime film "Your Name" is getting the live-action treatment, with Paramount enlisting Academy Award-nominated filmmaker of "Raya and the Last Dragon," Carlos López Estrada, to helm it. The film is currently in development, with Estrada writing the script, following an initial draft from "Bird Box" writer Eric Heisserer.
"Your Name" is considered a modern classic in Japan and was a significant hit in the country, grossing over 230 million at the time of its release. The film is a love story for the ages, plus, it combines the concepts of magic, time travel, and the beauty of friendship all in one. Its animation style is visceral, making the idea of a live-action remake seem less than ideal, but with Estrada attached, we can expect good things.
Here's everything we know about the adaptation so far!

Hollywood simply can't stop trying to discredit the merit of animation, can it? The latest big anime project that Hollywood is desperately trying to bring to live-action is Makoto Shinkai's seminal film "Your Name." The film is a gorgeously animated romance with a body-swapping twist, and follows a boy from Tokyo named Taki Tachibana and a girl from the country named Mitsuha Miyamizu who find they share a strange connection, which develops into a romantic and cosmic entanglement.
"Your Name" quickly became a phenomenon upon its release, with wide critical and commercial acclaim that catapulted the film into becoming the second-highest grossing film ever in Japan, until it was pushed to third place by the juggernaut "Demon Slayer: Mugen Train."
Of course, such success led to an instant wish to turn "Your Name" into live-action. Back in 2017 it was announced that J. J. Abrams and "Arrival" screenwriter Eric Heisserer would make the American adaptation,...
