In the early days of "Luther," BBC America's miniseries returning for four nights beginning Tuesday, Sept. 3, those responsible for creating the show's look gathered.
James Keast, the costume designer, recalls the director telling them, "Go off and find something relevant to the series."
The director wanted "shades of gray with flashes of color, lots of bits of pink, purple or red, and everything else is colorless," Keast tells Zap2it.
Tasked with this assignment, Keast turned to a fantastic Ukrainian photographer "who wanders the streets of Moscow photographing people who have no hope - a lot of kids, prostitutes and alcoholics," he says. He calls the shades and textures "no hope colors."
With those cheery thoughts, Keast built the wardrobe for "Luther." Though most detectives in Great Britain wear a suit on the job, John Luther (Idris Elba) does not.

The playwright on the revival of The Judas Kiss, the loneliness of writing and this year's Oscar nominations
What are you working on?
I'm trying to write but where I work I've got somebody knocking down an extension on one side, somebody else is drilling outside, they are redoing the road. I did a film called Page Eight about a year ago, and to everybody's considerable astonishment it got an enormous audience on BBC2. So I'm being implored by the BBC to write two more.
That was the one with Bill Nighy as an MI5 agent. Have you worked out what people liked about it?
I think it found this huge audience because it had a cheerful insouciance about it. It had a feeling of unforced gaiety and that was a tone that I had not found in my work for some time. When I started in 1970, I didn't really...

Fashion designer Nicole Farhi has been left so terrified after she was attacked by two robbers outside her London property, she is now too frightened to go home alone.
Two men targeted the style guru outside her residence in Highgate, north London last year, stealing her Rolex watch, diamond ring, and money.
Farhi told London's Wood Green Crown Court earlier this year she had feared for her life as one of the assailants grabbed her throat and strangled her until she lost consciousness.
The designer admits she was calm about the incident at first, but now she is traumatised by it and is frightened of being alone.
She says, "I was completely relaxed about it. And people did say to me, 'You'll see, Nicole, in a few months it will come back to you'. And it's true.
"It's really sad, that always in the back of my head there's the idea that I cannot walk home, or take my dog for a walk at night. Otherwise I'm fine. I don't think about it during the day, you know? But to go home by myself, I couldn't do it."
One of the men was cleared of the attack on Farhi - Matthew Mykoo, 27, denied 16 counts of robbery, but admitted two other charges.
In June, a jury found him guilty of five robberies but cleared him of eight other attacks - including the incident involving Farhi.
Mykoo's brother Daniel, 28, previously admitted 19 robberies - including the Farhi raid - and two car offences.

Fashion designer Nicole Farhi has taken the stand in the ongoing trial of two men accused of robbing her outside her London home last year.
The style guru was attacked by two males outside her home in Highgate, north London who stole a Rolex watch, money and a diamond ring.
Farhi testified at London's Wood Green Crown Court on Tuesday, revealing she feared for her life as one of her assailants grabbed her throat and strangled her until she lost consciousness.
She told the court, "One hand came on to my eyes, the others on to my throat, he squeezed and I fainted... My last thought was how stupid to die in front of my house."
Farhi recalled hearing the men speaking in her native French and asking for her Rolex back because it had belonged to her father, adding: "I asked for my watch back because it had sentimental value. I started speaking louder and louder and they said 'let's go' because I was speaking too loud."
The court heard evidence accusing Matthew Mykoo, 27, and his brother Daniel, 28, of attacking the 62-year-old on her driveway as well as carrying out 15 other robberies. Matthew Mykoo is also accused of brandishing a knife in the alleged attack on Farhi.
Matthew Mykoo denies 16 counts of robbery but last week (beg25May09) he admitted a further two counts, while brother Daniel has admitted all 16 charges against him.
The trial continues.
