Chad Ferrin, director of the outrageous fun Exorcism at 60,000 Feet follows up his 2020 foray into the world of H.P. Lovecraft, The Deep Ones, with The Old Ones – an even truer take on the work of Lovecraft than ever before, including the likes of Captain Marsh, Cthulhu and R’lyeh.
Speaking of Captain Marsh, The Old Ones sees two fishermen, Dan Gordon (Scott Vogel) and his son Gideon (Benjamin Philip), pull an old man out of the water. He turns out to be Marsh, who explains that he’s been kept alive for the past 93 years as a vessel of the Great Old One and then sacrificed to the same gods by the cult of worshippers – as seen in this film’s animated intro.

A Night of Horror International Film Festival, announces its first programming wave for 2024 today. Long known as Australia’s premier genre film event, the festival now takes place in the United States. This year, the festival’s 16th edition – and first in the US – screens from March 1-3, at the Micon Downtown Cinema in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Says festival director Dean Bertram:
To move a fest I co-founded in Sydney, Australia, back in 2006, to America feels surreal. A Night of Horror has long taken pride in being recognized for its excellence in showcasing the best and bloodiest new horror films from around the globe. And this year’s program is already shaping up to be one of my favorite line-ups yet. In the first wave alone are some of the most original, terrifying, and at times hilarious genre offerings that you’ll see this year: A bloody buffet of zombies,...

Another Lovecraft-inspired horror movie is on the way, with our friends over at Rue Morgue debuting the trailer for director Chad Ferrin’s upcoming indie The Old Ones this week.
Breaking Glass Pictures will summon The Old Ones on VOD March 19, 2024.
You can watch the official trailer for The Old Ones below, which previews an impressive array of old school practical effects that should make this low budget effort a fun watch.
In the film…
“In 1930, sea captain Russel Marsh saw the light, and for 93 years his body was not his own. Inhabited by a Great Old One, he committed unspeakable acts in the name of the Esoteric Order of Dagon. Now free, he is in search of a way to go back in time to reverse the horrors wrought upon the world. But the cult has other plans, and will stop at nothing to destroy him.”

Scalper doesn’t tell a particularly original story but it doesn’t really need to because it is definitely going for a modern take on the eighties slasher. In the movie we discover that everyone around the psychic Clementine Carter (Susan Priver) is being murdered by a masked killer dubbed ‘The Scalper’. She must use her psychic abilities (and occasional help from the police) to work out if this is a copycat killer or the murderer Andrew Lubitz back from the dead.
Scalper goes right for it with its pretty unpleasant and brutal first scene. We watch a man get stabbed from behind, and then repeatedly stabbed in the ass, until he is very close to death, at which point the killer uses the same knife to...

Squealer is one of two films, the other being Chad Ferrin’s Pig Killer, inspired by Canadian serial killer, rapist, and possible cannibal Robert Pickton. Pickton killed as many as 49 women and fed many of the bodies to the pigs on his farm, others he allegedly ground up and added to pork that he sold to the public.
Squealer begins on an equally sensational note as a silhouetted figure armed with a machete chases a naked woman through some scrubland. She’s struck by an Rv whose occupants take her to the hospital.
Lisa, a social worker who tries to help the local sex workers wants to find out who is responsible, especially after the woman panics and runs from the hospital and gets hit by a truck.

Earlier this month, a serial killer thriller called Squealer was given a theatrical and digital release. You can watch the trailer for that one Here. Squealer drew inspiration from the story of Robert Pickton, a Canadian pig farmer who was charged with killing 26 women (but claimed to have killed 49). He would feed the bodies of his victims to the pigs. Just a couple weeks after Squealer made its way out into the world, another serial killer thriller inspired by the Pickton case has arrived in theatres, and you can watch the trailer for this one, which is called Pig Killer, in the embed above.

Night Caller opens with visions of a murder underneath the main credits before Clementine an operator for Jade Mei’s gets a call from the man she saw in the visions before he commits the crime for real.
And that murder serves notice to viewers that this isn’t going to be a Scream or Blumhouse style mainstream horror film. There are repeated gory closeups of a large knife entering the victim’s body. A shift of camera angle to some not so explicit shots that suggest the knife is getting shoved somewhere else. And the ranting killer taking the somehow still living woman’s scalp as a souvenir.

Our film kicks off with, let us say, more than a wink and a nod to the seminal horror film The Exorcist. A film that, nearly 40 years on still can shock and terrify. Exorcism at 60,000 Feet might not shock and terrify in the same way. But it is not a subtle film, in many ways. Our exorcist here really looks the part, however rather than trying to get the beast out of the possessed man, he rather reluctantly shoots him in the head. Suddenly. I am invested.
There is a bit of black humour injected into proceedings. Wait. Lance Henrikson is in this? This is shaping up...

MidWest WeirdFest announces its first programming wave for 2021. The cinematic celebration of all things fantastic, frightening, paranormal, and just plain weird – now in its 5th year – takes place March 5th-7th 2021 at the Micon Downtown Cinema in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Says festival founder and director Dean Bertram:
The world has never seemed so weird. Neither has MidWest WeirdFest’s program of cutting-edge cinema. It’s filled with alien abductees, serial killer victims who can’t die, real-life dinosaurs that still live in the Congo, Lovecraftian fish people, mystically empowered but inept ninjas, an erotically twisted re-imagining of Edgar Allen Poe, and a dystopian fungal pandemic that makes Covid-19 look like a cake-walk… and that’s just from our first wave of feature film programming.

While envisioning Parasites, writer/director Chad Ferrin had to be mainlining heavy doses of Assault On Precinct 13 and Escape From New York. Socio-political extremism, synthy musical composition, aggressive violence – Parasites runs straight out of the 70s and onto our digital screens. Ferrin extrapolates an ever-growing homelessness rate and turns it into an urban question of purification, complete with political commentary that boasts seething prejudice. America’s scummiest, most neglected stones are overturned with satirical pause – but only on a shoestring-budget that struggles to drive home Ferrin’s fiery, enraged survival story.

Director Chad Ferrin, from Someone's Knocking on the Door and The Ghouls fame, has released the first trailer for The Chair. The clip shows a sadistic prison warden and his many prisoners. Each undergoes a horrifying series of tortures. Starring Bill Oberst Jr., Zach Galligan and Roddy Piper, fans of horror can preview the film here. For more on the story, The Chair focuses on Richard Sullivan (Timothy Muskatell). He is sentenced to Death Row, despite being innocent. His fellow prisoners are used as victims of the warden, while he does his best to survive day to day. When the torture becomes too much, Richard turns on everyone around him. But, when his sanity begins to leave him, Richard begins to understand that there are things worse than death. The first trailer for the film shows some of the settings and characters. The film is shot mostly indoors, behind bars.

Fangoria: Given your pedigree in horror, where are you at with Chad Ferrin?
Noah Segan: I would love to work with Chad again. I’ve been trying to, as a friend and as a colleague, trying to get Chad back to the thought that led to Someone’S Knocking At The Door, and previously, to the films that he made himself. Chad is one of those guys that I feel does his best work on his own. He does his best work by the skin of his teeth and his own bootstraps. That’s what attracted me to him. I would love it if that was a spirit we could get back to. I feel like recently, our business is no different than anybody else’s business in terms of how hard it’s become to function. Everybody’s lost a job, or can’t find a job, or isn’t being paid enough.
