Over Hollywood’s century-long history, women have played an integral part both as actresses on the screen, as well as creators behind the scenes. Many have fought to establish themselves in a male-dominated world, and have earned their place in history alongside the best, even managing to show out at the most prestigious awards ceremony — the Academy Awards. In celebration of Women’s History Month 2024, and the recent 96th Oscars ceremony, following is a list of 26 women who have earned eight or more Oscar nominations. Scroll through our photo gallery below.
One area in which women have dominated Oscar nominations is writing. Going all the way back to the second ceremony, Josephine Lovett earned a bid for “Our Dancing Daughters,” while Bess Meredyth received two noms for “A Woman of Affairs” and “Wonder of Women.” The next year, Frances Marion became the first woman to triumph in a non-gendered category,...

Hulu’s acclaimed “Only Murders in the Building,” currently vying for 11 Emmys, has gone all razzle dazzle in its third season. Make that rattle dazzle! Beleaguered Broadway director Oliver (Martin Short) was hoping for a comeback on the Great White Way with the mystery thriller “Death Rattle.” But when his leading man (Paul Rudd) is murdered, he decides to turn the straight play into a musical, “Death Rattle Dazzle!” And in the third episode, Meryl Streep’s nervous journeyman actress and Ashley Park’s leading lady performed the show-stopping ballad “Look for the Light” co-written by Sara Bareilles. One almost forgot the prime suspects in “Death Rattle Dazzle!” are the infant Pickwick triplets.
The 1959 multiple Tony winner “Redhead” also has a rather strange plot for a musical: a serial killer is stalking women in London in the 1880s during the time Jack the Ripper was terrorizing the city. Sounds like a real toe-tapper.

Fred Astaire was an Oscar-nominated song and dance man best remembered for a series of musicals he made alongside many female dancer, but especially Ginger Rogers. Yet his filmography extends well past those titles. Let’s take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
As a dancer, Astaire was known for his perfectionism, doing multiple takes to get the most precise movements correct. His immaculate steps were matched only by his outfits, which often consisted of top hats and coats.
After making a name for himself on the stage in London and on Broadway, Astaire came to Hollywood. He first appeared with fellow dancer Rogers in “Flying Down to Rio” (1933), where they played second fiddle to Dolores del Rio and Gene Raymond. Their first starring vehicle came just one year later: “The Gay Divorcee” (1934).
Their subsequent films, including “Top Hat” (1935), “Follow the Fleet” (1936), “Swing Time...

From the moment that its dreamy opening sequence sets the scene – Santa Barbara, 1979 – 20th Century Women manages to walk a thin line between realism and the contemplative daydream that is human experience. Director Mike Mills weaves a unique, moving and often deeply funny story around a small, incredibly talented cast; a subtle coming of age narrative that connects with each of its characters, regardless of age. While the story here takes place over a relatively short period of time in 1979, Mills scaffolds the narrative with quick-fire flashbacks montages, encompassing deeply personal, transformative moments and moments that transformed America. Consequently, he subtly transforms this simple tale into an engaging and uniquely structured film. Annette Bening is wonderful as resilient single mother Dorothy Fields, an endearing, indefinable presence in the lives of those close to her. Dorothy is parts conservative and liberal, old fashioned and fashionably...

Happy 53rd birthday to the woman who holds the record for (wait for it) the most televised standup specials, the divine Kathy Griffin. She’s been a sitcom actress, a Bravo reality star, a Levi Johnston date, a Celebrity Mole champ, a leading Ryan Seacrest critic, and most of all a hilarious and knowledgeable ally to the gay community who has always, always represented. There was once an article on Kathy that called her “Dorothy Snarker,” and I can’t think of a more fitting sobriquet: She’s not just funny in a broad, vulgar way; she is downright witty and insightful. Her memoir Official Book Club Selection is juicy and compulsively readable, and I just accidentally read six pages between sentences of this post.
Let’s celebrate with a query: What’s her funniest line?

HarperCollins has announced a new book series about Oz, that will start with Dorothy Must Die. “In this re-imagining, a twister rips through Kansas and transports Amy Gumm — most likely inspired by Judy Garland’s birth name Frances Gumm — into Oz, which has been transformed under Dorothy’s tyrannical misrule. In a complete twist from the original, Amy must steal the Scarecrow’s brain, remove the Tin Woodman’s heart, and take the Lion’s courage. And ultimately — destroy Dorothy.” Seriously?

You don’t need a detective to figure out the biggest winner at the box office this weekend. Prisoners, the R-rated thriller starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, brought in an estimated $21.4 million, easily beating second-place finisher Insidious Chapter 2 ($14.5 million) and blowing away the weekend’s only other new wide release, Battle of the Year ($5 million).
Prisoners’ win is even more impressive when you consider some of the challenges it faced on its way to the top of the chart. Straightforward dramas — at least, ones that don’t star Leonardo DiCaprio — can be a tough sell at the box office,...

Lagy Gaga performed “Applause” on Gma this morning, with a Wizard Of Oz motif
Op-ed: Why I’m Going to See Ender’s Game.
Below you can see a time capsule of Boy George in “King Of Everything.” His voice is throatier now because of time and those years of substance abuse, but he’s still unmistakably Boy George.
Gay rapper Chapman has just released “Gay Rap Song,” in response to Macklemore/Lewis winning at the Vma’s.

The magnificent Trevor Donovan has been cast for a guest role on Drop Dead Diva, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Apparently his role involves dropping his pants in the courtroom, which is always a good idea for Donovan’s characters.
Fox president Kevin Reilly said that he sees Glee ending at the end of its sixth season saying, “there’s two very clear arcs to get to that end and conclude.” However, he added he could see the show lasting beyond that if a new breakout star is found.
Whew. Syfy has picked up the third season of Continuum. I don’t have to figure out how to follow it without a U.S. broadcaster.
Brace yourselves, Fox is planning on adapting Broadchurch. From what I’ve heard about the original, that could be a challenge. Besides, I’m having a hard time imagining Fox coming up with casting as exciting as David Tennant,...

Top 10 Aliya Whiteley 28 May 2013 - 06:55
The 1930s to the end of the 20th century saw the release of some classic tap dancing movies. Here's Aliya's pick of the 10 best...
Either you love movies in which people suddenly break into tap dance routines to express their innermost desires, or you hate them. If you hate them, you’re in luck – they pretty much don’t exist in modern film any more.
Having said that, there have been some great dancing moments in the last few years, such as Amy Adams having a me party in The Muppets, or Meryl Streep bouncing up and down on the bed in Mamma Mia! But these aren’t tap dances, and they’re much more about enthusiasm than skill. Or High School Musical, Take The Lead and others give us great modern or ballroom dancing, but within the context of people putting on a show,...

Lorna Luft at Birdland, NYC
Attending Lorna Luft's performance at Birdland last Monday night, a foreign tourist couple were seated next to my table. They happened upon the show when looking for a "jazz" club, and knew nothing of Ms. Luft previous to seeing this show. After the performance, they shared that they truly enjoyed the entire evening. I mention this because Ms. Luft, who cannot help but reside to some degree or another in the shadow of her mother, Judy Garland, and sister, Liza Minnelli, is very much a fine and talented entertainer, quite independent of those associations.
The theme of the evening was the men in Ms. Luft's life: the composers with whom she has worked (Burt Bacharach and Jerry Herman), and one who she honors a great deal (Larry Hart). Also the men who she adores working with, two of whom, David Elder and Tony Yazbeck,...
