The comic book industry and the field of animated television bids adieu to comic creator/writer/producer Dwayne McDuffie, who passed away this morning from complications related to surgery at the age of 49.
McDuffie was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, where he attended Roeper School and the University of Michigan, earning an undergraduate degree in English, and a graduate degree in physics. He then attended film school at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. In the 80s, he started working as an assistant for Bob Budiansky at Marvel Comics, where he scripted stories. In early 1990, McDuffie became a freelancer and wrote stories for Marvel, DC, and Archie Comics.
In 1992, he co-founded Milestone Media, a comic book company owned by African-Americans, with a publishing deal with DC Comics. This is where McDuffie debuted the character Static. According to McDuffie:
