2024 marks the 40th anniversary of the creature feature C.H.U.D. (watch it Here), which is best remembered for its title – which stands for Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers – and for its cast, which included John Heard, Daniel Stern, Christopher Curry, and Kim Griest, with appearances by Jon Polito, Jay Thomas, and John Goodman. To celebrate C.H.U.D.‘s big anniversary, the folks at Dread Central decided to ask Goodman about the film – and found that he was quite happy to reminisce about his experience working with the cannibalistic humanoids!
Goodman said, “I am definitely in C.H.U.D. I’m from St. Louis and I moved to New York in ’75 to do theater and I wanted to do film. I knew if I didn’t go and try to do films, I would kick myself for the rest of my life. C.H.U.D. was made by a lot of the guys I was...

Horton Foote strikes again, with a warm and thoughtful tale of life as it was lived in East Texas in 1950. Geraldine Page won an Oscar for her unguarded portrait of Carrie Watts, a woman who has outlived her peers and been uprooted from an ideal hometown of her youth. Her trip to recover her life becomes a bittersweet acknowledgment that some things just need to be accepted with as much grace as can be mustered.

Every year, IndieWire looks beyond the countless top 10 lists written by critics to widen the field. We turn to friends and colleagues in the independent film community — programmers, distributors, publicists and others — to give them the opportunity to share their favorite films and other media from the past 12 months. We also invited them to share their resolutions and anticipated events for 2017.

I’m limiting my list to films that had Us and Canadian theatrical releases in 2016. I saw far more than 10 this year that I liked, but if I have to be brutal, I’ll limit it to the films that lifted me.

3. “Toni Erdmann”
4. “Cemetery of Splendor”
5. “Arrival”

Primary Stages is a reliable off-Broadway company that consistently mounts dramas most Broadway houses would not. Essentially they are theater's equivalent of indie movies, quirky and individual, and because of that they have developed a loyal audience.
The company, in the process of showcasing the Foote family at 59E59 Theatres, presented "Harrison, TX: Three Plays by Horton Foote" this summer.
"Him," which opens Tuesday, Oct. 9, is written by Foote's daughter, Daisy, and stars another daughter, Hallie.
Comparing the daughter to the father is not fair; he wrote the Oscar-winning screenplay "To Kill a Mockingbird" and the Pulitzer-winning play "The Young Man From Atlanta." Yet if their plays are presented as a group celebrating the family, it is difficult to ignore the familial ties, and to not draw comparisons.
This, unfortunately, is nowhere near as engaging as his work. In fact, it's not engaging at all.

Harrison, TX This trio of vintage Horton Foote one-acts — The Midnight Caller, The One-Armed Man, The Blind Date — ranges in tone from gothic melodrama to parlor comedy, but the spotlight belongs to Midnight (also notable as the play that brought an unknown named Robert Duvall to Foote’s attention). Do-no-wrong dialogue melodist Pam MacKinnon, one of the American theater’s most exciting directors, has assembled a near-perfect ensemble, including the charming, funny Andrea Lynn Green as Cutie, a young, would-be spinster, the unflappable Hallie Foote as the proprietor, and the great, great Jayne Houdyshell as their de facto matriarch, Miss Rowena. The backdrop is a quietly desperate all-women’s boarding house, serene in its stasis, destabilized by the coming of a divorced man (Jeremy Bobb) and a “fallen” woman (Jenny Dare Paulin). Censorious Alma Jean (Mary Bacon) protests, Cutie bursts spontaneously into tears, but it’s Miss Rowena, accompanying herself on rocking chair,...

The title alerts theatergoers to pay attention. Horton Foote was an important writer, a gifted storyteller who earned two Academy Awards and a Pulitzer Prize.
When Foote's plays are staged, it's worth making the time to see them, such as the one-month run that opens Tuesday (Aug. 14) at off-Broadway's Primary Stages at 59E59 Theaters. This black box consistently shows excellent plays to a mostly subscription audience. Sure, it's wonderful to be dazzled on Broadway. This is not a play -- or rather three short plays -- that dazzles.
Rather they are contained character studies of people living in the fictional town of Harrison, Texas, which Foote had said was based on his hometown of Wharton, Texas. That's the connection; the plays all take place in Harrison, two in 1928, before anyone knew what the next year would hold, and one in 1952. The only other constant, besides the locale, is that the...

This Halloween is the third in a row that the shaky-cam, faux-documentary series "Paranormal Activity" has released an entry into theaters, and critics agree that "Paranormal Activity 3" shares more than just a filming style with its predecessors.
While the critical consensus is generally positive, most reviews note how similar the new "Paranormal" is to the two that came before it. This could be seen as a good or bad thing depending on how you feel about the first two films. There are new scares filling out a quiet, homespun frame, but not much else.
Check out our roundup of the reviews, and be sure to read MTV News' five reasons to check out "Paranormal Activity 3."

Performing the nine one-act plays of Horton Foote's "The Orphans' Home Cycle" is a daunting challenge. But five of the main actors wouldn't have it any other way. Many have worked together on other pieces by the late playwright, who died in March at age 92. More than a few Foote plays have been helmed by Michael Wilson, who directs the cycle Off-Broadway at the Signature Theatre Company and previously at the Hartford Stage. The three-part production, which plays in repertory, has received raves, and there are rumors it will be heading to Broadway in the fall. Ironically, the work may not have come to fruition at all, because of the economic crisis, says Wilson, who is artistic director of Hartford Stage. Horton Foote, the prolific playwright and screenwriter who gave enduring voice to the values of small-town America in such movies as "To Kill a Mockingbird," "Tender Mercies" and "The Trip to Bountiful" and plays like the Pulitzer Prize-winning "The Young Man From Atlanta," died Wednesday in Hartford, Conn. He was 92.
Foote died in his sleep in his apartment. He was working on "The Orphans' Home Cycle," a collection of nine plays that will be presented next fall at the Hartford Stage, where his daughter, actress Hallie Foote, is now appearing in a production of "Mockingbird."
The Texas-born writer's career spanned more than 50 years in film, TV and theater. He earned two Academy Awards -- best adapted screenplay for 1962's "Mockingbird" and best original screenplay for 1983's "Mercies" -- and was nominated for a third for 1985's "Bountiful."
