Kids, you may not believe this, but some of us are old enough to remember when you used to have to connect to the Internet via 56k dial-up modems. Or that AOL was once the most popular Internet service provider, so popular that everyone recognized the cheerful "You've Got Mail" alert that sounded when you signed on. Or that the "You've Got Mail" greeting was a promise that there was something exciting waiting for you in your e-mail inbox, not just spam ads for Canadian Viagra. Don't believe us? There's a historical document you should check out, aptly titled, "You've Got Mail."
It's been just 15 years since Nora Ephron's romantic comedy opened (December 18, 1998), but it seems like eons ago, not just because the Internet has evolved so much since then, but because we've all watched the unwitting romance between Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) and Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) -- business rivals by day,...

Just after Valentine’s Day, The Writer’s Guild of America, East will honor the woman who wrote so perfectly about love: Nora Ephron. At the Writers Guild Awards author Meg Wolitzer will lead a tribute to the filmmaker and writer. Ephron wrote and directed the movie adaptation of Wolitzer’s novel This is My Life.
“Nora Ephron’s life and body of work were those of a quintessential New Yorker, but not only did she embody the sophistication, wit and energy of our city, she was also a loyal union member who walked the picket line and talked the...

The '90s gave us boys bands, Furby, crimped hair, and the golden age of romantic comedies. Whether it was Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan pining after one another in tapered khakis or Julia Roberts getting into hijinks after hijinks on her endless quest for love, the movies of the '90s gave us wisdom on everything in life from love to popularity to the importance of contacts.
Here are nine (often questionable) life lessons that '90s movies taught us.
All it takes for the popular guy to fall in love with you is a makeover.
In "She's All That" Rachael Leigh Cook stars as the total weirdo Laney Boggs who becomes part of a bet put on by dreamy jock Zack Siler (played by rom-com king Freddie Prinze, Jr). He originally just shows interest in her to win the bet, but when she gets her extreme makeover (which...

Taking a War Room approach to the debate over gay marriage, Joe Fox and James Nubile's Question One goes behind the scenes with campaigns promoting and opposing a 2009 referendum in Maine that, in the end, overturned that state's law granting same-sex couples the right to marry. The doc offers little to further the national discussion on this divisive topic, but its evenhandedness and unstrident tone will go down well with viewers accustomed to more heated treatments of it. Twin babies have been born in different countries. Dylan Joseph Fox was born in England and Hannah Rose Fox was born in Scotland, reports Metro. Dylan was born at around 8pm on the living room floor, weighing 2.6kg (5lb 13oz), while his sister Hannah was born at Borders General Hospital at 11.40pm and tipped the scales at 2.2kg (4lb 14oz). The twins were born four weeks early, so medical staff tried their hardest to get the mother to hospital in time for Hannah's arrival. It took an hour to get to the hospital. Parents Donna Keenan and Joe Fox already have a 2-year-old (more)...

There oughtn't be anything troublesome about Larry Crowne, which stars the affable everyman, Tom Hanks. I love Tom Hanks. The world should love Tom Hanks. As far as I'm concerned, the man gets a lifetime pass for everything he made between the years of 1980 and 2002, and half of what he's made since then. He's responsible for Woody. For Philadelphia. For Big. For Wilson. And Joe Fox. And the greatest laugh scene in history of film. And he matches that onscreen talent with off-screen deeds. He and Steven Spielberg made "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific." He produced "From the Earth to the Moon." And there's no better talk-show guest in Hollywood. He's one of the few actors in Hollywood -- along with Clooney, Pitt, and Damon -- for whom I can honestly say I'm thankful. If there were an acting category in the Olympics, I'd be proud to have Hanks represent America,...

What is it with Tina Fey and Oscar winners? Or maybe, what is it with NBC and high profile guest stars? (Cue the comments about stunt casting trying to get ratings for the flaiuling peacock.) (Cue me nodding along with those comments.) The newest Oscar winner to fall into Ms. Fey's charming, charming trap is none other than Tom "Bachelor Party" Hanks. There's no word as to what role he'll play, but I have my fingers crossed that he emerges as a threat to Donaghy rather than a Liz love interest. I mean sure, seeing Tina and Tom recreate a crazy version of You've Got Mail with Tom reprising the role of Joe Fox would be amazing.

It's that one candy-filled, semi-Hallmark time of the year that nobody can really escape (unless you cut yourself off from the outside world for the whole day). It's Valentine's Day, and the thick, smog-like layer of love is in the air. Now for some reason a majority of the women in my family collect romantic movies either on VHS or DVD. The piles of heart-felt movies began to collect throughout the years either in a cabinet or in a drawer underneath the television in their houses. Of course that means I was subjected to watch a good chunk of them when I was a kid. Now that I'm a little older, there are certain trends in character behavior from the male leads that I absolutely can not stand. How do these women put up with them? How do they fall for these good looking on the outside, disgusting on the inside,...
