There has been no shortage of television series centering the horrors of the Holocaust. Last year alone, Netflix’s “Transatlantic” depicted a group of resistors living in Marseille, and National Geographic’s “A Small Light” offered a retelling of Anne Frank’s experience through the eyes of Miep Gies, the woman who aided the Franks during their years in hiding. Though both of these series and those like them are important, Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones,” an adaptation of Georgia Hunter’s best-selling novel based on a true story, showcases something different. The show chronicles a family torn apart by war and hatred. Devastating, and profoundly moving, “We Were the Lucky Ones” illustrates the scope of World War II, the inhumanity of others and the anguish of disconnection and loss.

Milla Jovovich returns to the genre she knows so well with World Breaker. She stars opposite Luke Evans from Fast & Furious 6 and Dracula Untold. Brad Anderson is in the director’s chair for this science-fiction film. Anderson is known for such bleak projects as Session 9, The Machinist (which famously had Christian Bale lose a scary amount of weight prior to playing Batman) and Transsiberian. He has been dabbling in TV over the recent years, having directing for shows like Titans, The Man in the High Castle and Peacemaker.
The synopsis for World Breaker, according to Deadline, reads,
“Five years ago, a tear in the fabric of reality brought creatures to our world from an alternate dimension bent on our destruction. A father hides his daughter on an island to keep her safe while he prepares her for survival and the battles to come. But when the world is about to break,...

“Peaky Blinders” breakout Joe Cole enjoyed “little moments of levity” in his upcoming show “Nightsleeper.”
“I play a lot of serious, moody characters. But I read this role and went: ‘This is close to me as a person.’ I could be free and use my life experience, everything I have been through. I try to have fun in life and bring it to the parts I play. I haven’t always been able to do it, because I am usually killing people or stabbing them,” he tells Variety.
These days, Cole wants to be “stimulated and challenged” as an actor.
“I am working on a film now, these are Russian filmmakers and they tell dark stories, but they do it with levity. They don’t relentlessly bang you on the head. The story itself is grim enough, so find the humor!,” he notes, also mentioning a recent turn in “A Small Light” about Miep Gies,...

Dan Gordon, a 56-year member of the Writers Guild of America and reserve captain for the Israeli Defense Forces, published an open letter on Tuesday resigning from the union over its failure to condemn the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on Oct. 7.
“The failure of the Guild’s leadership to issue even the mildest condemnation of the worst massacre of a religious minority in the Middle East since Isis carried out similar atrocities against the Yezidis is appalling,” Gordon said in his letter. “It is corrosive to me as a writer and repugnant to every fiber of my being as a person of conscience.”
Gordon will assume “financial core” status, or “fi-core” for short. Those with fi-core status cannot vote in guild elections or receive other perks of full members, but still pay reduced dues and work under the same bargaining agreement terms as full members. Those who assume fi-core...

Ring the bell and make the count because Bad Bunny is tapping out of Sony and Marvel’s El Muerto, a superhero project the studio recently stripped from its calendar of upcoming releases. Sony Pictures removed El Muerto from its forthcoming slate in June. The Jonas Cuarón-directed Spider-Man spinoff would have served as the first time to feature a Latino character in the lead.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Bad Bunny and his publicist Sujeylee Solá said plans to star in El Muerto look grim. Bunny, whose real name is Benito Martínez Ocasio, fell silent when asked about the film’s removal from Sony’s schedule. After a prolonged silence, Solá said, “Next question.” Martínez added, “I don’t know what to say,” saying the issue is “delicate.” Solá quickly pinned the conversation by saying, “Obviously, it’s out,” referring to Martínez’s involvement with the spinoff.

The good news is that the hour didn't feel as though it was hurtling through too much plot at lightning speed.
As a result, Harlan Coben's Shelter Season 1 Episode 4 was infinitely easier to follow but still filled with twists and that tense cliffhanger.
We also have some confirmation about Ashley's whereabouts, but for how long?
As suspected, Rachel is a friend, not a foe, and Bat Lady remains one of the series' most puzzling characters.
Shelter is one of those series that, more often than not, makes it challenging to keep up with all the little tidbits they throw at us as it spins about a dozen plots simultaneously on its axis.
Nevertheless, it's an intriguing ride, and whether you can keep up with everything or not, it's nothing short of entertaining, primarily due to the likability of many of the series' characters and how well the actors do at bringing them to life.

This year’s Humanitas Prizes for screenwriting, usually handed out at Beverly Hilton ceremony, were announced via the Los Angeles Times this year in solidarity with the unions on strike, including the Unite Here Local 11 hospitality workers. And on top of awarding shows like The Last of Us and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Humanitas, an organization founded in 1974, also honored the striking Writers Guild of America itself with its “Voice for Change” award. Past winners of that award have included Ava DuVernay and Kenya Barris.
Humanitas’ mission is to tell “stories that explore the human experience because we believe that the act of acknowledging our common humanity is transformational.” With that in mind, this year the organization’s winners include The Last of Us‘ Craig Mazin for the teleplay for the emotional and critically lauded episode “Long, Long Time” in the drama television category. Robert F. Jewish organizations are condemning Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s latest conspiracy theory that claimed that Covid-19 “ethnically targeted” certain races while others — specifically Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese — were “most immune” to the disease.
In video published by the New York Post of the anti-vax Democratic presidential candidate’s press event at a Manhattan restaurant, Kennedy Jr. argued that “Covid-19 attacks certain races disproportionately. It’s the day after the Emmy nominations, and “Jury Duty” is still nominated for comedy series and three other things. No one from the academy stepped up to declare, “We’re sorry, but there’s been a terrible mistake. What we meant to say was, ‘Poker Face.’ You can understand how something like this can happen. ‘Jury Duty’ and ‘Poker Face’ sound almost exactly the same.” No. That didn’t happen, and at least one executive producer was relieved that it didn’t.
David Bernad won an Emmy last year as part of the producing team of “The White Lotus” and is now nominated again for that drama series. But he’s also an exec producer on “Jury Duty,” and he was beyond thrilled to hear the news that the grassroots viral hit had been honored for series and its writing and casting as well as for quirky star James Marsden in comedy supporting.

“Silk” screenwriter Peter Moffat is adapting Jonathan Freedland’s non-fiction book “The Escape Artist,” which tells the true story of two Jews who escaped from Auschwitz.

“This is a story of how human beings can be pushed to the outer limits, and yet still somehow endure,” said Freeland. “How the actions of one individual, even a teenage boy,...

Peter Moffat is forging a TV adaptation of UK journalist Jonathan Freedland’s The Escape Artist with Mood production outfit Bonafide Films.
The Your Honor and Criminal Justice BAFTA winner is onboard to write the show telling the astonishing, true-life story of how Rudolf Vrba, a 19-year-old Slovakian Jew, along with fellow inmate Fred Wetzler, escaped from Auschwitz to warn the world about the Holocaust. The pair’s report led to the saving of 200,000 Budapest Jews from immediate deportation to Auschwitz. The project is not yet attached to a network and Bonafide has secured rights for TV.
Freedland is a highly-regarded British journalist who mainly writes on politics and international affairs for The Guardian but has also penned numerous works of fiction, some of which are under the pseudonym Sam Bourne.

Major international productions have been bypassing the Czech Republic for the past year — but local producers and lawmakers have a plan to win such players back, they announced at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival this week.
The Czech incentives system essentially shut down in 2022 after major productions used up the $62.7 million annual cash-back rebate funds available — or so said the officials overseeing the program.
The Czech Republic has offered competitive 20% rebates — with a $6.8 million cap per project — as incentives for major productions for a decade now. The system has been heralded as the key to staying competitive in a part of Europe that’s highly in demand for big-budget shoots by the likes of Amazon, Netflix and the Hollywood majors.
But last year’s crisis need not happen in the future, says Vratislav Slajer, chairman of the Czech Audiovisual Producers Association (APA). Up to now, he points out, some productions...

During a recent Gold Derby video interview, news and features editor Ray Richmond spoke in-depth with Liev Schreiber about his role in the eight-part, Holocaust-themed limited series “A Small Light” from National Geographic, which is eligible at the 2023 Emmy Awards. Watch the full video above and read the complete interview transcript below.
By his own admission, Liev Schreiber wasn’t particularly eager to go back to work. He had spent eight years starring in the Showtime series “Ray Donovan” and was “really enjoying” being off and being home with his kids. Bad Bunny's superhero turn has been delayed. Back in April 2022, Sony announced that the rapper, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, had been cast in the lead role in Marvel's upcoming film "El Muerto." The movie was originally set to hit theaters in January 2024 and will mark the first time a Latinx actor will headline their own live-action Marvel film.
However, on June 22 Deadline reported that Sony had pulled the film from its release date schedule. That doesn't mean it's not coming eventually, though. The outlet said Bad Bunny's tour schedule and the WGA strike was the cause of the release delay. Popsugar reached out to Sony for confirmation but did not immediately receive a response.

Musical tag-teaming doesn’t have results much more fruitful than what came about when the showrunners of “A Small Light” picked Ariel Marx to compose the score for the limited series and Este Haim to serve as executive music producer. Neither Haim nor Marx was in a position to take anything about the job lightly, given that the eight-episode series for National Geographic and Disney+ tells the story of a Dutch woman, Miep Gies, who helped hide Anne Frank and her family from the Nazis. Yet, in their very separate roles, both found ways to bring musical light or even levity into a drama that inevitably skews toward tension.
Este Haim took on the Emp job for the first time with “A Small Light” after previously scoring or co-composing “Maid” and “Cha Cha Smooth” — on top of her day job as one-third of the rocking sister trio Haim. For “A Small Light,...

Even as Sony looks to the likes of Kraven The Hunter as the future of its Spider-Man-based spin-off universe, it is having to pump the brakes on others. The studio has announced it is taking the Bad Bunny-starring El Muerto off its release schedule.
The reason? Chalk up another film impacted by the ongoing writers' strike, plus complications from its musician star's touring schedule.
El Muerto debuted in a 2006 issue of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, written by Peter David, and illustrated by Roger Cruz. The character, real name Juan Carlos, was a super powered wrestler who originally fought Spider-Man in a charity wrestling where he nearly unmasked the hero before being stung by Spider-Man, with a paralyzing poison. After being saved from the hospital by the web-spinner when Muerto’s oppressor El Dorado came to claim the wrestler’s life, the two would team up to defeat Dorado.

National Geographic’s “A Small Light” takes the well known story of Anne Frank, the Jewish teenager who hid in a cramped Amsterdam attic with her family during the Nazi occupation, and presents it though a new lens.
The narrative focuses on a tenacious young woman, Miep Gies (Bel Powley), Otto Frank’s secretary, who risked everything to save the Frank family and many others. While the story centers around the horrors of World War II, the story finds resilience and hope through it all.
Here the artisans behind the limited series break down how their respective crafts reflect hope, resilience and the atrocities of war.

We had learned back in April of last year that music superstar Bad Bunny would be starring as Marvel Comics character El Muerto in a solo movie for Sony, a role that was hand-picked by Bad Bunny himself. THR brings us an update on the project this afternoon, revealing that Sony has now removed the planned upcoming movie from its current release schedule.
THR reports, “The feature project, which had Jonás Cuarón, the son of filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, in the director’s chair, was slated for a Jan. 12, 2024 release date but Sony announced Wednesday that it had taken the title off its release schedule.”
Cited in the report, Bad Bunny’s touring schedule and the ongoing WGA Strike are likely the main reasons why Sony has put a stop to El Muerto pre-production at this time.

Sony is placing Bad Bunny’s Marvel film, El Muerto, in a headlock. The studio is pulling the Spider-Man Universe movie from its release schedule, painting a grim picture of what is supposed to be the first live-action Marvel film led by a Latino character. According to Deadline, El Muerto is still in development, but Bad Bunny’s tour schedule and the ongoing WGA strike make scheduling a nightmare. El Muerto was supposed to enter the cinematic ring in theaters on January 12, 2024.
Marvel hired Jonas Cuarón to direct El Muerto, with Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer writing the script. Jonás Cuarón is the son of filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, whose 2018 film Roma won Best Directing, Best International Feature, and Best Cinematography prizes at the Academy Awards.

Joan Rater wasn’t interested in making another Holocaust project about Anne Frank, in part because the story had been told so often and so well but also because she always felt personally distanced from historical pieces. But after Rater and husband Tony Phelan visited the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam, they were inspired to want to tell the story of the woman who hid Anne and her extended Jewish family from the Nazis in the Netherlands in the early 1940s. “But if we were going to do this, I needed it to feel modern and relatable,” she says. “I needed it to feel like something I’d get into.” The result was “A Small Light,” a Nat Geo eight-part limited series that Rater and Phelan served on as creators, showrunners, co-writers and executive producers. It has attracted consistently stellar reviews while dramatizing the courage of a Dutch woman named...

Behind the tragic story of Anne Frank and her family, there is an oft-unsung hero who risked her life to protect them in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam.
The limited series A Small Light from National Geographic with Hulu and Disney+ tells the true story of Miep Gies, a Dutch woman who hid the Franks and other members of the Jewish community in a secret apartment above her place of work.
For Bel Powley (The Morning Show; The King of Staten Island), playing Gies meant telling a story steeped in heart-wrenching tragedy, but also the touching connection Gies had with those she protected, and her role in preserving Anne Frank’s diary for her father Otto (Liev Schreiber), the immediate family’s only survivor.
Here, Powley describes the research and emotional process involved in playing the role and the impact of telling a story that remains so vital today, during a time when anti-semitism remains prevalent.

Bel Powley Says She Was ‘Blown Away by How Contemporary’ Making Holocaust Drama ‘A Small Light’ Felt
This story about Bel Powley and “A Small Light” first appeared in the Limited Series / TV Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Like so many of us, Bel Powley read “The Diary of a Young Girl” by Anne Frank when she was in school. But she was less familiar with the woman responsible for the world’s awareness of the diary: Miep Gies. The secretary of Otto Frank, Gies helped hide the Frank family from the Nazis for two years in Amsterdam and kept Anne’s diary safe after the family was arrested in 1945.
“I know a lot about this part of history — the big historical and political backdrop — but I didn’t know anything about Miep or the Dutch resistance,” Powley said. Former Pink Floyd Singer Roger Waters Under Investigation For Wearing Nazi Costume At Berlin Concert
While performing the song “In the Flesh?” in Berlin, Roger Waters dressed up in a costume that resembled a Nazi SS uniform. Martin Halweg, a spokesman for the German police, said that they were investigating Waters on “suspicion of incitement to public hatred” under German laws against antisemitism and promoting Nazi imagery.
Great news! Berlin police have launched a criminal investigation into Roger Waters following his concert in which he dressed like a Nazi SS officer holding a gun and denigrated the murder of Anne Frank.

In a Facebook post, Waters criticized the “bad-faith attacks” and labeled those investigating him as people who want to “smear and silence” him for his “political views and moral principles.”
Waters said that “In the Flesh?,” which comes from the Pink Floyd album The Wall, was written as a satire about fascism.

President Franklin Roosevelt, in a moment of fury and exasperation a year before America entered the Second World War, confided in Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau Jr. “If I should die tomorrow, I want you to know this,” Fdr said. “I am absolutely convinced Charles Lindbergh is a Nazi.” That is one of many shattering moments in “The U.S. and the Holocaust,” an enthralling, seven-hour PBS docuseries directed by Ken Burns, Lynn Novick and Sarah Botstein.

Roger Waters is reportedly under criminal investigation by German police for “suspected incitement” following his concerts in Berlin on May 17th and 18th.

Miep Gies stood out as a symbol of courage, resilience, and compassion in the National Geographic production A Small Light. Miep Gies, a real-life figure, played a pivotal role in sheltering Anne Frank’s family during the horrors of the Holocaust. Her undying determination and selflessness were masterfully portrayed in the series, leading the audience to fall in love with her character. Portrayed by Bel Powley, Miep Gies was initially introduced as a vibrant and spirited young woman seeking employment to avoid the societal pressure of marriage. Her rebellious nature shone through as she challenged traditional expectations. When she was hired by Otto Frank to work at his pectin company, Opekta, her professionalism was evident, but it was her deep bond and friendship with the Frank family that truly stood out. This connection served as the cornerstone of her commitment to safeguard and support them despite the dreadful situation of war.

The National Geographic production A Small Light skillfully captures the atmosphere of Amsterdam during the 1940s amidst the ongoing turmoil of World War II. Under the watchful and oppressive eye of the Nazis, many Jewish families faced the grave risk of capture and subsequent deportation to death camps. Some managed to find secret shelter within the city, while others sought refuge in hidden locations. Among them were the renowned diarist Anne Frank and her family, who found solace in a secret annex. The series poignantly portrays their harrowing journey and the individuals who aided them, notably Miep Gies, Otto Frank’s secretary, who played a pivotal role in hiding these Jewish families. However, tragedy ultimately befell the Franks and their fellow hiding companions when some Nazi Gestapos raided Otto Frank’s office premises and found the hidden Jews in a secret annex.
