For singer and songwriter Michael Franti, the road to “Champions” began with a text message during the pandemic. Franti and his long-time friend Woody Harrelson had talked of making a movie together, but the timing never worked. Once Covid hit, the musician found himself with a lot of time on his hands. “I had nothing to do except sit around and watch reels from the movie,” he tells Variety.
In “Champions,” directed by Bobby Farrelly, Harrelson plays Marcus Marokovich, an assistant coach for a minor league basketball team in Iowa. After a DUI, he accepts a community service assignment managing players with intellectual disabilities. Working with his athletes over the course of his 90 days, they gradually break down his grumpy exterior and help reveal his empathetic side.

We’ve seen Elisabeth Moss take on corporate male toxicity in Mad Men, a ghost of a man in The Invisible Man, Gilead in The Handmaid’s Tale and punk rock in Her Smell. This weekend we’ll see her as a horror author who tries not to unravel as she goes through her creative process in the Josephine Decker-directed Shirley.
The film, which is adapted from Susan Scarf Merrell’s 2014 novel of the same name, bowed at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and is based on the real-life horror author Shirley Jackson and her husband Stanley Hyman.
“We were not making a film that we ever thought, ‘Oh, we’re making a film about the real Shirley Jackson’,” Decker told Deadline at Sundance. “In fact, the script really meshed up a bunch of timelines in the real Shirley Jackson’s life, so it absolutely was a fiction.

Enough is enough. Abramorama has unveiled an official, full-length trailer for the documentary Parkland Rising, which is launching with a live stream event in early June in just a few weeks. Directed by two-time Emmy award-winning filmmaker Cheryl Horner McDonough, Parkland Rising is an inspiring look at the students of Parkland, who have started an international movement to call attention to the need for better gun safety laws. The film encourages everyone to stand up and get involved. From executive producers Katie Couric and will.i.am, the film features Jaclyn Corin, Matt & Ryan Deitsch, Emma Gonzalez, Fred Guttenberg (Father of Jaime Guttenberg), Lauren and David Hogg; with music by Ajr, Black Eyed Peas, Sammy Brue, Bob Dylan, Michael Franti, and Pearl Jam. This is different than the doc film After Parkland, which focuses more on emotions. This ones focuses on change - and how we can make that change happen with solidarity.

The Maui Film Festival celebrates its 19th anniversary this year, and, despite taking place in an ever-more crowded calendar of summer film fests, its popularity continues to grow. The event attracts locals and mainlanders alike, and draws both casual fans and ardent cineastes with its unique mixture of sun, sand and life-affirming cinema.
And this time around, in an unexpected turn, the eruption of the Kilauea Volcano on the neighboring Big Island of Hawaii has raised the Maui fest’s profile to new highs.

The longlist for the Best Song category in the Oscars has been announced – so what should make the cut?
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the longlist of songs for its Best Original Song Oscar in 2014, ahead of the nominations for the shortlist on January 14.
The list features 75 songs written for movies over the last year, with artists including Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, U2, Coldplay, Kings Of Leon, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and M83 all making the grade. Pharrell is included for his hit Happy, currently in the top 5 of the UK charts, which appears in Despicable Me 2, and other animated films make up a large proportion of those selected: Epic, Turbo, The Croods, Planes, Escape From Planet Earth and Monsters University all also get a mention.

Bend, Ore. — Musicians have objected and the number of paying customers is down, so the Old Mill District in Bend will no longer allow concert-goers to sit across the Deschutes River and get a free show from the likes of Pink Martini, the Steve Miller Band, Norah Jones and Zz Top.
For 11 summer seasons, the Central Oregon concert venue has allowed people to congregate in the area of grass and paved recreation path on the east side of the river, but that will stop Sunday with a performance by Michael Franti & Spearhead at Les Schwab Amphitheater, The Bulletin newspaper reported ( ). http://is.gd/DTAuBF
In an era when music acts make their money on tour rather than from recordings, said venue manager Marney Smitth, "we're getting a reputation that we want to nip in the bud: that we're a venue that people can see the music for free."

Despite oft-overlapping acts, massive music festivals have a tendency to always reflect their surroundings. No matter if Coachella is being headlined by a holographic Tupac or a bill brimming with early-90s Britpop nostalgia, the festival is always going to to feel like an outgrowth of Los Angeles--and be very different from Chicago's Lollapalooza.
This necessary connection is precisely why the first ever BottleRock Napa Valley is so interesting.

Scheduled for this May in downtown Napa, the heart of Northern California's wine country, the four-day festival promises to bring both the region's famed reputation for culinary and wine-making excellence with a slightly more adult sensibility to the Bay Area's standard music festival experience.

After endorsements from a host of musicians such as Bruce Springsteen, The National and Moby, President Barack Obama has another huge musical group in his corner: Grammy-winning indie-rock stars Arcade Fire.
The site 90 Days, 90 Reasons featured two statements by the group's Texas-born Butler brothers Win and Will over the weekend, with both giving their rationale for supporting Obama over Republican candidate Mitt Romney.
"Reason 86: Barack Obama is perhaps the greatest president of modern times at communicating directly with foreign populations," Win Butler wrote. "He has also changed the way the government communicates with its own citizens about the outside world."
Win Butler cited Romney's well-reported miscues while visiting London, stating that "he ended up convincing our greatest ally that he's prone to terrible gaffes that could jeopardize relationships with our allies -- delicate relations where a few misplaced words can do great harm." Could the cost-cutting, revenue-generating experiments surrounding this year's Taste of Chicago concerts still not be enough to save the shrinking summer festival?
After five years of declining attendance and diminishing returns, the city slashed the traditional ten-day food and music showcase in half this year, cutting the fireworks and adding a price tag for seats at Grant Park's Petrillo Music Shell, where Jennifer Hudson, Death Cab For Cutie, Chaka Khan and more are slated to perform.
But when advanced sales for the $25 seated tickets closed Monday, the Chicago Sun-Times reports that just over 7,100 of the 15,000 tickets available for the five headlining performers had been sold.
That may not reflect overall attendance: lawn seating for these performances is free, and tickets will be sold at box offices on-site during the festival. Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events spokeswoman Cindy Gatziolis disputed the newspaper's characterization that sales were low in an...

While Miley Cyrus isn't the first person to come to mind when making a wishlist of artists to cover Bob Dylan songs, we have to admit -- we're really looking forward to this album.
Miley and a host of her contemporaries have joined forces to pay tribute to both Bob Dylan and Amnesty International with a new cover album. The record, titled "Chimes of Freedom," features a huge variety of artists -- from Pete Seeger to Ke$ha.
"Glee" star Darren Criss even makes a contribution to the four-disc compilation, covering New Morning with his brother, Chuck Criss, and his band the Freelance Whales. The jam-packed album, which "salutes Amnesty International's 50th anniversary and life-saving human rights work," is set for a January 24 release. Check out the list of songs and artists below to see which classic your favorite singer will be covering.

Talib Kweli is the latest musician to offer his support to the Occupy Wall Street movement. He showed up at New York's Liberty Plaza Thursday night for an a cappella, spoken-word style performance. Previously, Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel and Michael Franti entertained the crowd into the night.
Kweli ended his set by leading the crowd in a call-and-response rise to action:
"I'm at a loss for words
But even me being at a loss for words is amplified
They want to know what the end game is?
This is the end game
You doing your job
Everybody here with a camera
Everybody here with a computer
Everybody here with a smartphone
Everyone here with a voice
Do your job
And spread the word
For the people who are sleeping here
You inspire us

Atlantic City, New Jersey — For the first stop on its traveling roadshow, the Dave Matthews Band Caravan brought a rootsy collection of friends to dusty Bader Field on Friday. And even after a career-spanning set that included "Don't Drink the Water," "Satellite" and "Why I Am," Dmb still have plenty of hits to draw from for the next two headlining performances of their inaugural three-day festival.
Matthews gave nods to almost all of the day's supporting acts, mentioning Delta Spirit, Carolina Chocolate Drops and The Head & The Heart, and saying, "It was a pleasure to share the stage with Ray Lamontagne." David Ryan Harris, who played Friday afternoon, joined the band for perennial crowd favorite "Jimi Thing" from their 1994 debut, Under the Table and Dreaming.

Grab your favorite frat boy, because Dave Matthews Band is relevant again! Dave and the rest of the guys have kick-started a new Chicago music festival called the Dave Matthews Band Caravan.
The three-day event will take place in an undeveloped community on the south side of Chicago, right on the lake. You can only get three-day passes, which cost between $195 and $825... which will get you the VIP package. You know, for the J.Crew set.
Okay, so we're teasing a bit, but in all honesty, the lineup is pretty amazing. We're strongly considering tie-dying our favorite polo shirt, popping the collar, and hitting Chi-town with a few cases of Fat Tire. Here's the full list, from the press release:

For many, the Dave Matthews Band is summer. So, after a 20-year kinship with the band on the road, what exactly would a Dmb-less summer look like for devoted fans? Lucky for "Dave heads," they'll no longer have to ponder that prospect.
In 2010 the band announced they would be taking a hiatus from touring in 2011, but in the months that followed, an announcement was made that the multifaceted group — which includes Dave Matthews, Carter Beauford, Stefan Lessard and Boyd Tinsley, as well as Rashawn Ross, Tim Reynolds and Jeff Coffin (who stepped in after the death of founding member LeRoi Moore) — would be headlining a four-stop, multi-act Caravan festival from June to September.

Wow, y'all, pickings are slim tonight. And I don't mean in the "there's nothing good on" sense, I mean there's nothing on. Good, bad, indifferent or otherwise. At least nothing new, I guess there may be some interesting re-runs happening somewhere. I hope you've got books or some DVDs to keep you busy otherwise, god forbid, you might actually have to interact with other people and we all know how much those of us who spend time on the internet hate that. As best I can tell from movies and TV shows, we're all either super genius teenagers who "hack" in some kind of competitive fashion or lonely obese men in basements with no lights stuffing our face with some variety of neon-colored snack food and soda who like to pretend we're nubile 21 year old women with fabulous social lives who also somehow manage to have time to talk dirty...

The big entertainment news this weekend that didn't relate to the Oscars, clothing, or James Franco doing his best impression of a Lay's Baked potato chip was that Charlie Sheen has finally accomplished what we all thought was impossible; production has been halted on "Two and a Half Men." I'm sure you've all seen or heard the rant itself, or seen quotes from it placed on photos of adorable kittens which makes everything seem funnier and less like it came from the mouth of an unbalanced man who has probably burned through at least one septum with his coke usage. I'm thrilled because it always baffled me that a country that got up in arms over whether Lea Michele's shirt exposed too much of her sternum on the cover of Cosmo didn't say a word about a known drug abusing, hooker frequenting, girlfriend punching public relations disaster like Mr.

Can you believe it's already March? One-sixth of 2011 is already gone, and in those two months there have already been some great moments on late night television (mostly thanks to David Letterman's embrace of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit models and Jimmy Fallon's insistence on booking Odd Future and Bel Biv Devoe in the span of a week). There will certainly be more on tap moving forward, starting with this week, which features a number of great actors and killer musical acts. You'll get some of everything on "The Tonight Show," including Matt Damon and musical guest Cake (Tuesday, March 1), Simon Cowell (Wednesday, March 2) and Jerry Seinfeld (Thursday, March 3). Over on "The Late Show With David Letterman," the host will sit down with "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone (Monday, February 28th), "Red Riding Hood" star Amanda Seyfried (Tuesday), "The Celebrity Apprentice" host Donald Trump (Wednesday) and...
