The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Nominations were revealed Wednesday morning, serving as yet another precursor on the long road to the Oscars.
In the film categories, Birdman was the big winner, scoring four nominations, including for Michael Keaton, Edward Norton and Emma Stone, as well as the collective ensemble cast. Boyhood followed right in its footsteps with three nods for Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette and another ensemble nomination.
The big surprises of the morning’s nominations started with Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler, a bubble contender in a crowded Best Actor race, Jennifer Aniston for Cake, a bubble contender in a disappointingly less crowded Best Actress race, Robert Duvall in the poorly reviewed The Judge and Naomi Watts for St. Vincent (Watts was in Birdman as well, but that must’ve slipped SAG’s minds).

As some of you may know, I'm a bit of a jack(ass) of all trades. I follow the film industry for Lr, and critique films. But I'm also an actor, I front a rock band, I'm a DJ, film editor, and director as well. Basically, when it comes to entertainment, there's nothing I don't do. For some time now, I've been mulling over bringing some of my other interests to Lr, and I'll be starting with the SAG Awards. How? Well, I've been a member of SAG for 6 years now and I also am part of the voting process. That means every year I am sent screeners of all the films being considered for awards.
Here's where a new running feature comes into play:
As I start receiving these screeners, I will write special reviews for each one and publish them here. Then, as we near the voting deadline,...

ER said goodbye last night. As you might expect, the two-hour episode was filled with medical drama from start to finish. The faces have certainly changed over the years but castmembers like Scott Grimes, Parminder Nagra, Linda Cardellini, John Stamos, David Lyons, Mekhi Phifer, and Angela Bassett have kept the legacy alive.
Though much of the final episode of ER focuses on personal stories, there are plenty of plenty of references to storylines and characters of days gone by. George Clooney and Julianna Margulies don't return for the last installment but Eriq La Salle, Laura Innes, Sherry Stringfield, Noah Wyle, and Alex Kingston do. It's certainly nice to see their faces in the opening credits once again. Rachel Greene (Hallee Hirsh), the daughter of the late Dr. Greene (Anthony Edwards), returns to help keep her Dad's memory alive. Longtime minor characters like Haleh (Yvette Freeman), Frank (Troy Evans), Chuney (Laura Ceron...

After 15 years on television, "ER" will finally take its last breath on April 2. The preview for the finale on April 2, gives flashes on the doctors and staff that have been gracing the hall of Chicago's County General Hospital throughout the years, including the appearance of Dr. Mark Greene.
Called "And In The End...", the finale sees a new medical facility for the underprivileged being opened and old friends return to show their support. Gates treats a teenager with alcohol poisoning after he and his friends play a drinking game. Sam is surprised when she receives a special gift for her birthday.
Apart from familiar faces like Noah Wyle, Eriq La Salle and Julianna Margulies, the finale will give a flashback to Anthony Edwards' character Dr. Greene who had died in the 179th episode, through the appearance of his daughter, Rachel Greene. Rachel (Yvonne Zima) is a med-student who picks...

There's more good news for fans of ER. While the network decided to end the medical drama after 15 seasons, the execs at ratings-starved NBC want to make sure they make the most out of the show's final run. That translates to a return visit by two of the series' most famous alum and a few more episodes.

When Lee Strasberg directed the Group Theatre's premiere of Sidney Kingsley's "Crisis" (better known as "Men in White"), he took the cast to a hospital to talk to doctors and nurses and rehearsed the operating-room choreography more than 100 times in three months. The actors practiced their operating-room moves on their own every morning in pantomime, and those playing doctors kept stethoscopes in their pockets.
Today's TV doctors and nurses are even more rigorous: They have to know lots of procedures and terminology -- and make the fake look real for the camera. It's not just an acting challenge; it may also change your mindset about the medical profession.
On the set, medical advisers are always present, and on some shows real nurses work as extras. Actors also get training after they're hired. For example, when Yvette Freeman was cast as a nurse on "ER," she shadowed some nurses at a Los Angeles hospital. They taught her how to use the various machines and do basic things like wrap bandages and put on surgical gloves quickly. "In real life you have time, but on TV you have to do it in seconds," Freeman says.
