Director Yorgos Lanthimos’ highly-anticipated anthology film Kinds Of Kindness has a full trailer ahead of its release in the UK next month.
Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone revealed their latest collaboration, Kinds Of Kindness, to the world at Cannes this month. Following 2019’s The Favourite and last year’s Poor Things, hopes are high that the film formerly known as And will continue their hot streak.
An anthology film, Stone and her fellow actors play multiple roles across three stories. We’ll be able to see the movie for ourselves in just under a month’s time when it releases in the UK. In the interim, Searchlight Pictures has released the full trailer, which we’ve enclosed below.
Here’s a synopsis, which is admirably vague in its wording:

Well, that's one way to resolve a years-long conspiracy theory among the weirdest and nerdiest of fans. The creative team behind "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" is apparently taking no chances in the months leading up to season 2 of the Prime Video series, unwilling to let leaks or set photos ruin the biggest surprise in decades of Middle-earth lore. Instead, the fine folks over at Vanity Fair were given an exclusive first look at the burning question at the forefront of all our minds: Will the bizarre character known as Tom Bombadil, whose boots are yellow and is famously a merry fellow, appear in the streaming show?
The answer to that little riddle is now confirmed to be a resounding yes. After all the biggest and most popular adaptations of author J.R.R. Tolkien's work to this point went out of their way to avoid mentioning...

And nothing quite matches the exhilaration of reckoning with a new voice—the kind that jolts you out of your festival torpor and reminds you of all the beauty and magic the cinema can muster. As usual, those epiphanies were a lot harder to come by in the official competition than in the risk-friendlier Directors’ Fortnight, an independent sidebar born in 1969 as a counterprogram dedicated, per its mission statement, “to showcasing the most singular forms of contemporary cinema.” It is here that some of the greatest have shown their earliest stuff, an illustrious pedigree that’s flaunted before each screening through a short reel...

Rian Johnson's Benoit Blanc detective series continues to be one of the hottest tickets for working actors, as proven by the most recent bit of casting news for the follow-up to "Glass Onion." According to Deadline, "Challengers" and "La Chimera" star Josh O'Connor will appear in the upcoming mystery movie, which we recently learned will feature the excellent title "Wake Up Dead Man." Alongside O'Connor, "Civil War" and "Priscilla" breakout star Cailee Spaeny is also set to appear. As of publication time, we don't know yet whether they'll play murder victims, suspects, or some other role in Johnson's next whodunnit.
Aside from star Daniel Craig, Spaeny and O'Connor are the first two actors to be announced as part of the project, and they're a pretty buzzy duo to kick things off. British actor O'Connor had already earned accolades for (among other projects) his turns on royal drama "The Crown...

Both the knives and casting notices are out!
The first two cast members to join ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’ have been announced: two on-the-rise stars Cailee Spaeny and Josh O’Connor. The 25-year-old Spaeny is coming off of Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” which earned her a Golden Globe award and the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at last year’s Venice Film Festival, and a terrific turn in one of this spring’s most talked-about films, Alex Garland’s “Civil War.” She’ll also be seen in this August’s “Alien: Romulus.” The British 34-year-old O’Connor was seen in two well-regarded movies this spring, Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” and Alice Rohrwacher’s “La Chimera.”
The two will, of course, join Daniel Craig, returning as the “gentleman sleuth” Benoit Blanc. Writer-director Rian Johnson announced on social media that the movie is about to go into production, so...

Josh O’Connor and Cailee Spaeny are reportedly in talks to join Daniel Craig in the ensemble for Rian Johnson’s next Knives Out film, Wake Up Dead Man.
Considering the exorbitant amount that Netflix paid Rian Johnson to make two Knives Out sequels, it figures that we have to see at least some of that reported $400m on the screen. That was certainly true in 2022’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery which boasted one of that year’s most stacked ensemble casts. As the third film in the series, Wake Up Dead Man, moves towards production, we’re already looking forward to a string of high-profile names circling the project.

After announcing the title for the new Knives Out installment last week, the first big names to join Daniel Craig in the next installment are Josh O’Connor and Cailee Spaeny. Nothing comes easy for “The Fall Guy” (Universal). Despite a home release 18 days after opening (typical for Universal) and outgrossing “Civil War” by $4 million despite playing for four weeks less, Alex Garland’s film shares top honors with the stuntman actioner this week on the VOD charts.
Both films, available for rental for 48 hours at $19.99, placed #1 on one chart apiece. “Civil War” leads at iTunes (ranking by transactions), while “Fall Guy” does at Fandango (calculated by revenue). One factor differentiating the two is that “Civil War” was released on Friday, while “Fall” debuted the previous Tuesday. That gave the latter an edge on Fandango, which has a weekly Monday-Sunday chart. It was #1 on iTunes on Wednesday through Friday, with “Civil War” #1 since.

Fans of the 2002 film 28 Days Later and its follow-up 28 Weeks Later have been waiting seventeen years for another entry in the franchise, hoping we’d someday see a movie called 28 Months Later. We’re not getting that one, but 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland are currently working on reviving the franchise, and they’re going to make this revival worth the wait. Not only are we getting a new movie called 28 Years Later, but we’re actually getting a whole trilogy of sequels! Sony has reported that the film is set for a June 20th, 2025 release date. The film began shooting in late May around the Northeast of England. But what else do we know about this 28 Years Later sequel trilogy.

The most controversial film of 2024 has already been released and is attracting criticism from all sides. Written and directed by the visionary filmmaker Alex Garland (Ex Machina), Civil War has proven to be a massive hit for the A24. Civil War has everything you need including striking visuals, a gripping story, and complex characters. While there are people from both sides of the political aisle criticizing the film for not picking a side, I think that Garland did a wonderful job at showing us a broken America without blaming any political party for it.
Civil War is set in a dystopian future America suffering from a civil war as a team of military-embedded journalists race against time to get to Washington D.C. to interview the President before rebel factions take over the White House and kill the President. Forget the "Walking Dead" comics or the first "Resident Evil" film; it was "28 Days Later" that made zombies cool again in the 21st century. Easily the best zombie movie that technically isn't a zombie movie, director Danny Boyle's sci-fi horror thriller takes place in a nightmare world where society has collapsed following the outbreak of a lab-born, zombie-esque infection dubbed the "rage virus." Many of the film's leads would go on to become far bigger names after its release, including a baby-faced Cillian Murphy as the poor Joe Schmo (or whatever the British equivalent is of that) who awakens from a coma to find London abandoned and overrun with red-eyed, rampaging infected individuals.
The first produced film written by Alex Garland, "28 Days Later" marked the beginning of the storyteller's exploration of transformed landscapes and physical bodies (a motif he's carried over into his non-sci-fi work with the...

As Neon was justly feted this weekend for a fifth consecutive Cannes Palme d’Or winner (Anora), it also had a nice showing at home with a terrific expansion for indie Babes.
The feature directorial debut of Pamela Adlon jumped from a 12-screen opening last week to 590 and hit no. 9 at the domestic box office with an estimated $1.06 million three-day weekend and cume of circa $1.29 million. Over the four days, including the Memorial Day holiday, the gross approaches $1.23 million and the cume $1.46 million.
The film follows inseparable childhood best friends Eden (Ilana Glazer) and Dawn (Michelle Buteau) who grew up together in NYC but are now firmly in different phases of adulthood. When carefree and single Eden decides to have a baby on her own after a one-night stand, their complex friendship faces its greatest challenge. Co-written by Glazer and Josh Rabinowitz.

I’d rather not go into why Alex Garland picked America to be the war zone in Civil War, although I can think of more than a couple reasons that might’ve motivated the choice. And I’ll tell you why I think that discussion would be a waste of time. In Garland’s Civil War, starring a breathtaking Kirsten Dunst and a shockingly effective Wagner Moura, the setting is a terrarium of pain and death presented and observed with near-unflinching neutrality. Desensitized neutrality is mandatory in war photojournalism. In the story of Lee, Joel, Jessie, and Sammy chasing a scoop on the civil war that’s broken out and a denial-driven fascist in the Oval Office, America is merely a war hawk. It could’ve been any other place, any other time. And the only thing that’d remain relevant is the frustrating futility of it all.

As if “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” isn’t enough of a caffeine boost, this week’s digital debuts include no fewer than four heart-pounding thrill rides. First up, a movie-star vehicle that doubles as an ode to stunt work.
The contender to watch this week: “The Fall Guy“
David Leitch‘s action comedy adapted from the ’80s TV show of the same name had all the makings of an early summer blockbuster: adrenaline-pumping stunts, charismatic lead turns from Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, and generally favorable reviews. So why is Universal dropping it on VOD just 17 days after the release? Probably because “The Fall Guy” is perceived to be something of a flop. That line of thinking isn’t totally fair considering the movie has made $128.3 million and counting worldwide. Still, the studio expected more, especially because “The Fall Guy” seems like it will just barely recoup its budget in theaters.

Nuri Bilge Ceylan made a triumphant return to Cannes last year with About Dry Grasses, for which Merve Dizdar won Best Actress at Cannes, and now Turkey’s Oscar entry now arrives on streaming. In his review, Leonardo Goi said, “The pastures in Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s luminous new film are only dry at the very end. Save for that brief summery coda, the landscape in About Dry Grasses remains a snowcapped immensity where prairies are ringed by belittling peaks, people stand out as calligraphic silhouettes, and snow falls so heavy as to blot out everything. It’s as if it fell ‘to make oblivion possible,’ observes art teacher Samet (Deniz Celiloglu), and in a film...

With the release of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” on May 10, this year’s Best Visual Effects Oscar race just got a lot more interesting. That’s because we’re almost guaranteed to get three, possibly even four, movies in the race that are follow-ups to previous Visual Effects nominees. “Apes” is likely to be the fourth movie in its franchise nominated for the innovative performance capture used to help create the film’s photo-realistic apes. Three previous films, starring Andy Serkis, were nominated for Oscars in the category in 2011, 2014, and 2017, but none of them won.
The work done by director Wes Ball and his team has made “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” a serious contender in multiple below-the-line categories, not just visual effects. Its production design and sound are equally impressive. But the academy branch that’s most likely to be impressed will be the...

Since we first learned of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's plans for 28 Years Later back in January, news on the movie — the first in a proposed sequel trilogy to Brit zombie horror duology 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later — and the franchise's future has come thick and fast. Last month alone, we shared that Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes have joined 28 Years Later's cast, and that Candyman director Nia DaCosta is in talks to helm the second part of the new trilogy. And now we know at last that newly-minted Oppenheimer Oscar winner Cillian Murphy, who was already aboard as an executive producer, will be making a return in front of the camera too.
In an interview with Deadline, Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman was asked directly whether Murphy — who starred in Boyle's first film as bike courier-turned-Rage virus survivor Jim — would be back for 28 Years Later.

We got word earlier this year that 28 Days Later director (Danny Boyle) and writer (Alex Garland) are teaming up for a series of sequels to the 2002 horror hit, and following the recent news that Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes have signed on to play the lead roles, it's been confirmed that Cillian Murphy will return for 28 Years Later.
There was speculation that Murphy, who won the Best Actor Academy Award for his performance in Oppenheimer, might be set to reprise the role of Jim from the original movie when he signed on as an executive producer, and Sony has now made it official.
"Yes, but in a surprising way and in a way that grows, let me put it that way," Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman told Deadline when asked if Murphy would return. "This is Danny [Boyle] at his best, combined with a very commercial genre,...

28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland are finally reuniting to make a sequel to their zombie movie classic. As we reporter earlier this year, this sequel is set up at Sony, is going to be called 28 Years Later – and it may even launch a whole trilogy of 28 Days Later sequels. Last year, 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy said he’d gladly be in a sequel if it was made by Boyle and Garland, and when this project was announced, it was confirmed that Murphy is on board as an executive producer… but as months have gone by and Boyle has assembled the cast, it’s remained unclear whether or not Murphy will actually appear in the movie. Now Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman has told Deadline that Murphy is back for 28 Years Later, but he’s coming back in “a surprising way.

Cillian Murphy has been confirmed to return for 28 Years Later by Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman.
Speaking to Deadline, the movie executive said Murphy would be back for the first film in the zombie franchise’s new trilogy and vaguely teased the actor would be involved “in a surprising way and in a way that grows.”
Rothman also praised the film as director Danny Boyle “at his best, combined with a very commercial genre, like we had with Edgar Wright and Baby Driver.”
Further addressing 28 Years Later, Rothman emphasized the movie is “not in any way a literal sequel.”
Earlier this year, Murphy was similarly opaque about his potential role in 28 Years Later during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, simply saying, “Watch this space.”

Danny Boyle and Alex Garland are reteaming for the long-awaited 28 Years Later horror sequel trilogy, with Cillian Murphy on board as executive producer. But will Murphy, who of course starred in 28 Days Later, be reprising his role? It sounds like the answer is a big Yes.
Speaking with Deadline this week, Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman was flat out asked if Cillian Murphy will be back to star, and his answer suggests that is indeed the plan.
“Yes,” Rothman answered, “but in a surprising way and in a way that grows, let me put it that way.”
He continued, speaking more generally about 28 Years Later, “This is Danny at his best, combined with a very commercial genre, like we had with Edgar Wright and Baby Driver. Sometimes when you put a real signature director into a commercial arena, it elevates it.”

It's hard to believe that A24 is over 10 years old, but the company has quickly become one of the best contemporary distributors. Few distribution companies have developed their own recognizable aesthetic or are able to sell pricey hipster-style merchandise. But A24's curation of independent film has stoked the flames of cinephiles' passion for bold visions and imaginative stories. Their commitment to creating a platform for independent filmmaking feels refreshing in the glut of superhero and IP-driven releases. A24 has launched the careers of some of our most innovative filmmakers, including Greta Gerwig, Barry Jenkins, Alex Garland, Ari Aster, and Robert Eggers while bringing directors such as Harmony Korine and Sean Baker to a wider theatrical audience. But for every "Moonlight" or "Hereditary," there are other A24 films that have not been quite as well-received. Even though they have bad Rotten Tomatoes scores, they are still worth watching for all...

The blockbuster franchises are showing signs of serious wear and tear, so why don’t the studios take on newer worlds created by the likes of Christopher Nolan and Alex Garland?
Some of the greatest genre movies of all time are sequels. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back; Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan; The Godfather Part II; The Dark Knight; Police Academy 7: Mission to Moscow. Ok, maybe not that last one, but you get the idea. There is absolutely no reason that lightning can’t strike twice, or even three, four, five, six times, if the will and creative verve are in place.
And yet there is also a law of diminishing returns. This week Planet of the Apes writer-producer team Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver revealed that they are planning another five films in the dystopian sci-fi series, after the barnstorming box office and critical success...

The hot-button film of the year from Alex Garland would become A24’s biggest opening, with over $25 million made during its opening weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, the modern-day war film currently sits above $108 million at the global box office, which makes it a pretty big hit considering the epic-looking film sported a $50 million dollar price tag for the indie boutique studio. Variety now reports that the film has set a digital release date after the well-received performance at the box office.

Italian filmmaker Roberto Minervini’s artfully crafted movies, which include such works as Stop the Pounding Heart, The Other Side and What You Gonna Do When the World’s on Fire?, have always sat in a murky gray zone separating fiction from documentary.
Nonprofessional actors play themselves, or versions of themselves, in narratives that seem to have been crafted out of their own lives. And while the locations are always real places, with an emphasis on swaths of the American South — as his name suggests, Minervini is Italian, but he’s lived in the U.S. since 2000 — the director transforms them into sublime backdrops for his gritty tales of poverty and abandon.
His latest film, The Damned, is not technically a documentary: It’s set in 1862 at the height of the Civil War and follows a pack of Union soldiers treacherously exploring unmapped territories in the West. And yet, if...

Nearly a month after its theatrical release, Alex Garland’s thriller Civil War starring Kirsten Dunst has officially made it to breaking even, to-date garnering more than $103 million against the initial budget of $50 million.
Having started its fifth week of run in cinemas, the movie now leaves absolutely no doubt that it’s taken a number two position at the A24 list of the highest-grossing films that the studio ever produced.
Though Civil War’s theatrical performance is coming closer to its eventual end, the movie still has a way to go for surpassing A24’s biggest box office success.

Alex Garland's "Civil War" seems destined to be remembered as one of the movies of the year, for better and worse. The film about war photographers capturing the carnage of a divided, brutally violent future America has proven polarizing among audiences and critics, with many praising it as a powerful work while others criticize it as hollow. Issues related to its use of AI in promotional materials and the inclusion of archival footage from nefarious sources make one's decision to sit with this movie even more fraught, yet it's also proved a hit. In addition to enjoying a bigger box office opening than any other A24 film to date, "Civil War" is now only the studio's second movie to reach the $100 million mark.

“Civil War,” Alex Garland’s film about journalists navigating a fractured United States, has set a digital release date.
The A24 film, which inspired plenty of critical debate, is set to debut on VOD on May 24. It will be available to rent/purchase on both Prime Video and Apple TV+.
Starring Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Nick Offerman, the film set an A24 record with a $25 million opening weekend.
When speaking with Variety in a cover story about the film, Dunst said the work is intentionally meant to spark debate.
“The whole movie is open to interpretation,” Dunst said. “For me, there were things I just accepted that were unexplained. It allows the audience to fill in their own feelings about what they’re watching.”
Garland agreed it was best for him not to connect too many dots.

Exclusive: Vue founder and CEO Tim Richards caused a stir last month with an intriguing appearance in front of the UK Parliament’s British Film & High-End TV Inquiry.
Launched by the influential Culture, Media and Sport Committee, the bipartisan inquiry has spent weeks interviewing industry figures as part of an investigation into the current state of film and TV production in the UK. Richards appeared at the session alongside Picturehouse Managing Director Clare Binns and Alex Hamilton, CEO of Studiocanal UK, who both expressed fairly downbeat conclusions about the current and future position of independent British cinema. Veronika Yasinska and Nadiia Zaionchkovska launched the all-rights distribution and co-production outfit Green Light Films last summer, betting on a future for the Ukraine theatrical business in the middle of the ongoing war.
Now at their first Cannes as buyers, they can point to a string of specialty successes, including Jade Halley Bartlett Miller’s Girl, which earned around $284,000 locally, the Ukrainian documentary Us, Our Pets and the War from Ukrainian YouTube Star Anton Ptushkin, which at $115,000 and counting is the second highest-grossing Ukrainian film of the year, and, perhaps surprisingly, Alex Garland’s Civil War, which has earned more than $266,000 in Ukraine to date.

Just last month we heard that Keanu Reeves would be teaming with Ruben Östlund, the acclaimed director of Triangle Of Sadness, to make The Entertainment System Is Down. Now it’s being reported (via Screen Daily) that Reeves will be joined on the project by Kirsten Dunst and Daniel Brühl.
Meanwhile, Deadline adds that Östlund has gone to the trouble of buying a full-size, retired Boeing 747 for the movie, and will use it as a full-scale set.
