Let It Be—the 1970 film, album, and song—celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, and it will be accompanied by a frenzy of new and remastered material. Not only will the original film be presented in a new pristine cut, but Peter Jackson will use the same restorative magic he used on the film They Shall Not Grow Old on 55 hours of never-released Beatles footage for a new take on their cinematic swan song. The band who taught the world about group unity presented a cautionary tale on the way out. The Beatles were always educational, expanding the music theory of rock and roll, and Let It Be was a lesson on how a rock group said goodbye. Such lessons were never lost on the upstart educational series Sesame Street. Chris Cerf, who produced the show’s music and wrote the parody “Letter B,” remembers the impact the song had on him,...

Judy Freudberg, a writer who helped bring the sweet bright-red monster Elmo to life during a nearly 40-year career on the landmark PBS series Sesame Street, died June 10 of a brain tumor. She was 63. Freudberg, who collected 17 Emmy Awards for her work on the kids series, also collaborated with Tony Geiss on Sesame Street’s first feature film, Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird (1985), and on two animated movies for executive producer Steven Spielberg: The Land Before Time (1985) and An American Tail (1986). Sesame Street writer Tony Geiss has died. He was 86 years old.
The Hollywood producer, who wrote scripts and lyrics for the long-running children's show, passed away on 21 January in Valhalla, New York after suffering complications from a neck injury.
Geiss earned 22 Daytime Emmy awards for screenwriting and songwriting over the 30 years he worked on the show, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
He also co-wrote hit 1988 animated dinosaur movie The Land Before Time as well as Steven Spielberg's 1986 film An American Tail.
A statement from Sesame Street bosses reads: "Tony's brilliant words, his sense of humour, his musical virtuosity, and his respect for children in this country and around the world, brought laughter, love and learning together for generations."
Geiss has no immediate survivors; his wife of 60 years, Phyllis Eisen, passed away in 2009.

This August marks the 25th anniversary of Follow That Bird, the first movie based on the Sesame Street TV series. I like to think of it -- though I sometimes forget to -- as a part of the Muppet movie franchise. Yet despite some overlap of characters between Sesame Street and the Muppets, few others ever consider this movie when discussing the true Muppet installments, such as its immediate predecessor, 1984's The Muppets Take Manhattan. The disparity in appreciation for the brands is even evident in the fact that Manhattan (which features much of the Sesame Street cast in cameos) was a relative success, grossing $25 million, while Bird (likewise featuring Kermit the Frog in a cameo) was considered a box office flop with final earnings of only $14 million.
