He was born in Miami. He has Sephardic (Spanish Jewish) ancestry. Because of his father's work as a reporter, the family often moved during Yani's childhood, living in Australia, Spain, and Texas. They settled in Toronto, Canada.
He was named after a family friend, writer Jan Joors.
