*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Artsploitation Films. Director: Joram Lursen. Writers: J Blakeson (The Disappearance of Alice Creed) and Frank Ketelaar. Cast: Sarah Chronis, Tygo Gernandt, Marwan Kenzari. Dutch director Joram Lursen (primarily known for romantic comedies and Dutch television shows) enters into thriller territory with Reckless (Bloedlink), his version of 2009's The Disappearance of Alice Creed. While this viewer has not seen the original, there's a general consensus that this remake does not stray far from the first and, according to some critics, even surpasses it. In Lursen's film, Laura Temming, the daughter of a wealthy real estate mogul, is kidnapped by two masked men and held for ransom. Over a period of roughly two days, we observe the three characters in close quarters and discover that there's much more going on than anticipated. Reckless not only delivers an intriguing plot with phenomenal acting,...

Reckless is a crime thriller from the Netherlands. The film is a remake of the 2009 film The Disappearance of Alice Creed. Both films deal with an abduction, ransom and double-dealings. Who is playing who? This title is set to be released on July 14, 2015, via DVD. And, the film stars Tygo Gernandt, Marwan Kenzari and Sarah Chronis. A preview for the film's North American release is hosted here. The film deals with a trio of characters. Laura (Chronis) is the daughter of a wealthy businessman. Victor (Gernandt) and Rico (Kenzari) are two, ruthless kidnappers. Each character has different motivations and desires, with all three determined to take the ransom money, for themselves. But, the relationships between these three might be deeper, than how they initially appear. The Disappearance of Alice Creed was a taught thriller. This earlier film has been covered here (A Movie Clip of Tdoac). And, both films are...

It was all the way back in 2009 that young UK writer-director made his breakthrough with taut thriller The Disappearance Of Alice Creed. Blakeson, at the time, was rightly hailed as a bright young talent to watch, the sort of director who could easily prove to be the next Danny Boyle. He has since disappeared into development hell without a single other credit to his name in the five years since Alice disappeared. And though we still wait for Blakeson to reappear, there goes Alice popping up in the Netherlands thanks to Reckless (Bloedlink), a remake of Blakeson's film from director Joram Lürsen.Ex-cons Victor (Tygo Gernandt) and Rico (Marwan Kenzari) have masterminded a foolproof plan to abduct millonaires' daughter Laura Temming (Sarah Chronis). When she is kidnapped...

Title: Black Death Directed By: Christopher Smith Starring: Eddie Redmayne, Sean Bean, Carice van Houten, Kimberly Nixon, John Lynch, McInnerny, Andy Nyman, Johnny Harris, Emun Elliott, Tygo Gernandt, Jamie Ballard, David Warner A well-made movie isn’t always an enjoyable one, but, then again, not every movie is meant to be enjoyable, per-se. Whatever director Christopher Smith’s exact intentions are for Black Death, what we’ve got is a terrifyingly ominous experience bound to put a knot in your stomach. Smith braves the odds and offers something that denies us the hyped action churned out by the Hollywood machine and aims straight for the darkest, most realistic telling possible, which is bound to [...]...

Last night the hottest ticket in town was the New York City premiere of Chris Smith's "won't-fit-in-one-category" new film Black Death.
The maniacs at Magnet Releasing saw fit to allow yours truly to host the event and it was a treat to see so many Ugo readers in attendance.
Before the event I had the good fortune to drink a few pints and eat (very hot) chicken wings with Mr. Smith at the legendary East Village dump beloved to all film geeks, Nice Guy Eddie's. Smith was in great spirits as Chelsea had just beaten Manchester United. (As a soccer ignoramus, the only teams I know are Leeds and Derby County from The Damned United, but I wasn't about to tell him that.)
The TV above the bar was showing Jean-Paul Rappenau's very bland 1990 version of Cyrano de Bergerac.
"See! That's how they want all period movies to look.

Recall those fantastic looking new teaser posters for new Brit horror 'Black Death' from last week? Course you do. Well another has been revealed, less comic book style than the last two but still a very clever and interesting contribution. Christopher Smith's ('Severance', 'Creep') new horror outing stars a bunch of talented Brits lead by 'Silent Hill' and 'Lord of the Rings' star Sean Bean alongside the likes of Carice van Houten, Eddie Redmayne, Kimberley Nixon, Andy Nyman, Johnny Harris, Jamie Ballard, Tygo Gernandt, Emun Elliott, David Warner, John Lynch and Tim McInnerny. It seems like one hell of a long time ago that we checked out Christopher Smith's 'Black Death' when it was released here in the UK last June but sadly our Atlantic cousins are still waiting on a theatrical release. 'Black Death' is available currently on Video On Demand but won't hit the big screen until 11 March. Still, there's some great new assets being released in the lead up to the big day including these two amazing looking pieces of artwork featuring its star Sean Bean. Bean is joined by fellow cast members Carice van Houten, Eddie Redmayne, Kimberley Nixon, Andy Nyman (currently starring in the West End stageshow 'Ghost Stories' - by far the best and scariest thing around!), Johnny Harris, Jamie Ballard, Tygo Gernandt, Emun Elliott, David Warner, John Lynch and Tim McInnerny ('Severance')....

Magnet Releasing (Survival of the Dead, Centurion) continues to snap up movies this week and the latest acquisition is the German shot Black Death. This film stars Sean Bean and Magnet will release this title in the Us in the first quarter of 2011 (January-April). Director Christopher Smith had some insightful thoughts to expression on the sale and on his film: "Black Death is a film that I am immensely proud of, and I’m so pleased it has found such a great home for its Us release...on the one hand it is a violent historical drama and on the other, a terrifying horror movie, in which the more realistically I shot the past, the more it reflected the present. A time when in spite of the fact people were dying of the plague, they still found the time to torture and kill each other” (Magnet). These are some very...

Sean Bean plays a religious knight in a genre that might be described as Dark Ages pulp. By Peter Bradshaw
I was agnostic about horror director Chris Smith's first film, Creep, but this has an insistent, dour darkness and narrative energy that is very watchable indeed. In a genre I can only describe as Dark Ages Pulp, he has created some very effective entertainment with nods to Michael Reeves's Witchfinder General and Robin Hardy's The Wicker Man. Sean Bean plays Ulric, a religious knight who, at the height of the Black Death, is leading a band of mercenaries across country in search of a remote village, that has been entirely spared the plague, reportedly because the inhabitants practise satanic rituals, and the Dark Lord wards off the sickness and brings corpses back to life. Bean's mission is to capture the villagers' leader in the name of the church,...

I’m still anxiously awaiting British director Christopher Smith’s “Triangle” with Melissa George, one of those movies with a killer premise, but until that movie is finally released, Smith has already moved on to a period/horror movie called “Black Death”. The film stars Sean Bean and Carice van Houten (who has apparently replaced Lena Headey since we last reported on the movie) and is set in medieval England, with the plot revolving around the bubonic plague and a small town that may or may not have made a pact with the devil. Set during the time of the first outbreak of bubonic plague in England, a young monk is tasked with learning the truth about reports of people being brought back to life, a mission that pulls him toward a village ruler who has made a dark pact with evil forces. Starring Sean Bean, Carice van Houten, Eddie Redmayne,...
