Actor/director Dev Patel opens this two-minute look behind the scenes of Monkey Man by quoting a quote from the film: “The pain will leave you once it’s finished teaching you.” Patel, who made his feature film directing debut with the action thriller, learned that lesson the hard way, breaking his foot and his hand during shooting.
“I poured all of myself into this. Every frame, every beat, every detail…and it’s been a ferocious process making this film,” explained the Oscar nominated actor.
Joining Patel in front of the camera are Sharlto Copley (District 9), Pitobash (Million Dollar Arm), Vipin Sharma (Hotel Mumbai), Sikandar Kher (Aarya), Adithi Kalkunte (Hotel Mumbai), and Sobhita Dhulipala (Made in Heaven). Ashwini Kalsekar (Ek Tha Hero), Makarand Deshpande (Rrr), Jatin Malik, and Zakir Hussain (Duranga) also star.

Exclusive: The Sydney Sweeney & Paul Walter Hauser title, Americana, which was one of the prolific acquisition titles from last year’s SXSW, has finally seen its worldwide rights go to Lionsgate.
Why did a movie with big stars and 100% on Rotten Tomatoes take so long to sell? I understand part of the hold-up stems from the pic’s financier, Bron Studios, going into bankruptcy.
The Tony Tost written and directed movie follows local outsiders and outcasts in a small South Dakota town whose lives violently intertwine after a rare artifact falls onto the black market. Americana also stars pop singer Halsey, Eric Dane, Zahn McClarnon, Gavin Maddox Bergman, Simon Rex, Derek Hinkey, Toby Huss, and Harriet Sansom Harris.
Pic is produced by Alex Saks. EPs are Aaron L. Gilbert, Steven Thibault, Alison-Jane Roney, Paris Kassidokostas-Latsis, Terry Dougas, and Jean-Luc de Fanti.

The India-set pic is inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage. Patel plays the Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash.

The BBC has picked up Irish crime drama Kin from Fifth Season.
The RTÉ series, which aired in the U.S. on AMC+, is the latest high-profile show snapped up by the BBC buying team, following the likes of AMC’s Interview with the Vampire. It is produced by Joker financier Bron Studios and Man in the High Castle outfit Headline Pictures.
Kin stars Clare Dunne (Herself), Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) and Ciarán Hinds (Game of Thrones). It follows gang wars in Dublin. A boy is killed and his family embarks on a gangland war with an international cartel: a war that is impossible to win. The Kinsellas are a local crime family, while the Cunningham cartel is a vast global organization.
“Anchored by a tremendous cast, Kin is a powerful and intense story of love, grief, family and crime, and its devastating ramifications,” said Sue Deeks,...

More than two years have passed since it was announced that MGM, Bron, and Hidden Empire Film Group were teaming with director Deon Taylor to conjure up a reboot of the 1972 blaxploitation classic Blacula (watch it Here). Last night (and one year late), a 50th anniversary screening of Blacula was held at the Fine Arts Theater in Beverly Hills – and while promoting that event, Variety happened to include a long-awaited update on the Blacula reboot, saying the new film is slated for a Halloween 2024 release.
The new Blacula has been described as a “modern reimagining” of the original film, but Variety has also made it sound like it’s going to be a follow-up to Blacula and its sequel Scream Blacula Scream (watch that one Here). According to Variety, “the reboot picks up where the original saga left off, after the 1973 sequel Scream Blacula Scream, and will be set in...

Goodbye, angel.
“The Idol” — HBO’s controversy-ridden series from Sam Levinson and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye — has been canceled after one season.
“’The Idol’ was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response,” said a spokesperson for HBO. “After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”
Season 1 concluded — after just five episodes, shortened from the originally planned six-episode run — on July 2. The decision to cancel the series was made recently after a lack of clarity for both viewers and cast members about whether the series had the potential to continue. In an interview with Variety, star Moses Sumney said that he signed on thinking it was a limited series, while star Da’Vine Joy Randolph...

The Idol is one and done at HBO.
The controversial series from Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, will not be returning for a second season.
It’s not a huge surprise given the critical and commercial reception of the show, which starred Tesfaye and Lily-Rose Depp. It also came after extensive reshoots following the departure of director Amy Seimetz, as revealed by Deadline in April 2022, and a reduced order taking its total number of episodes to five.
Some of the cast did mention the possibility of a second season during interviews, though show insiders said that creators did not come into the production process with a plan for a multi-season arc.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who played one of the managers of Depp’s pop star Jocelyn, previously said that the first season was left intentionally open-ended for the possibility of a second.

Covid, media landscape challenges, strikes “have made Bron’s ability to continue its existing business impossible”.
Bron, the Canadian producer and co-financier of studio titles like Joker, House Of Gucci and Licorice Pizza, has filed for protection from its Canadian creditors.
The company has also filed for recognition of the initial creditor protection order – issued by the Supreme Court of British Columbia – in the United States under Chapter 15 of the Bankruptcy Code.
It is attempting to steer through a recovery after a brutal confluence of events that has afflicted many in the industry – Covid, economic challenges, and now the double strike.

Not so fast. HBO has responded to a report in New York Post’s Page Six, citing sources, that the music drama series would likely not return for a second season.
“It is being misreported that a decision on a second season of The Idol has been determined,” HBO wrote in a tweet. “It has not, and we look forward to sharing the next episode with you Sunday night.” (See below).
Page Six quoted a source as saying, “This was never meant to be a long-running show, it was always … a limited series.” The story also quoted a source inside HBO which refuted the idea that it would not return, saying “The door is definitely still open — it’s definitely not a decision [yet]. At this point, this is normal in our process … we’re only two episodes in.”

The buzz surrounding HBO’s controversial new series The Idol might just be working to its benefit.
Episode 2 aired on Sunday night, drawing about 800,000 total viewers across Max and linear HBO telecasts. That’s a slight dip from last week’s premiere audience of 913,000. According to HBO, viewing held steady on Max and the dip in viewers came via linear.
That makes sense, considering the series is likely targeting a younger demographic than the typical linear television viewer. Nielsen reports that The Idol viewers on Max are tracking 21 years younger than viewers via the HBO channel, a wider disparity than the typical HBO drama.
As predicted, viewing for the premiere episode has significantly increased since the episode aired. It has now surpassed 3.6M viewers in its first week on the service, which HBO says outpaces the series premieres for both The White Lotus (3M in 2021) and Euphoria (3.3M in 2019) in the same time period.

The premiere of The Idol didn’t draw a huge audience for HBO Sunday — but it did fall in line with some other recent series debuts on the premium cable outlet.
The Idol, which courted controversy with provocative trailers and was met with mostly negative reviews, drew 913,000 viewers across HBO (for the premiere and three replays) and Max on Sunday — with the majority of that coming via streaming on Max. The on-air debut on HBO drew 232,000 people, a little over a quarter of the total for the night.
The 913,000 viewers is a sizable step down from the first-night numbers for the final season of Succession, which immediately preceded The Idol in HBO’s 9 p.m. Sunday spot. It’s about level with a handful of other recent HBO drama debuts, however, including Winning Time (901,000 viewers) and season one of The White Lotus (944,000). HBO said “Hello, angel” to 913,000 viewers when it aired the series premiere of “The Idol” on Sunday night.
Provided by Warner Bros. Discovery, that number points to Nielsen’s measurement of linear viewers on HBO’s cable channel combined with Wbd’s own data regarding streams on Max.
For context, “Euphoria” drew 1.1 million viewers when it premiered in 2019. Levinson’s second HBO outing is therefore 17% behind his first. The trajectory of “Euphoria” Season 1 viewership was mostly flat, peaking with 1.2 million viewers of the finale, meaning that “The Idol” could still manage to beat out “Euphoria’s” early performance if its audience continue to grow. But there’s only one month left to achieve that, as the drama’s first season will run for a short five episodes.

Will Sam Levinson have another HBO success on his hands with The Idol?
The series premiered Sunday night to 913,000 total viewers across Max and linear HBO telecasts, according to HBO. This is a fairly promising debut for The Idol, and viewership for the premiere is likely to grow in the next week as conversation about the somewhat controversial series continues ahead of Episode 2.
HBO says that new episodes of a series tend to draw 10%-20% of their total viewership on Sunday nights, indicating that The Idol will probably average several million viewers, at least for the first episode.
That being said, the series starring Abel Tesfaye aka The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp didn’t quite match premiere viewership for Levinson’s first HBO hit, Euphoria. That series took home 1.1 million viewers on its premiere night in 2019, with a bit of a lead-in from a Season 2 episode of Big Little Lies.

The final trailer for The Idol offers up a somewhat different angle on the HBO series.
The clip, coming six days before the show’s June 4 debut — and after frosty reviews (including one from The Hollywood Reporter) after screening at the Cannes Film Festival — slightly tones down the in-your-face provocation of two earlier teasers, one of which said The Idol comes “from the gutters of Hollywood.”
The new trailer instead foregrounds pop star Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) attempts to re-establish herself at the top of the charts after a nervous breakdown on her last tour. She’s guided — or maybe brainwashed? — by Tedros (Tesfaye), a Hollywood club owner who takes both a professional and personal interest in Jocelyn.
The five-episode drama, co-created by Euphoria’s Sam Levinson, Tesfaye and Reza Fahim, went through a creative overhaul partway through filming that saw a number of cast changes and the departure of original director Amy Siemetz.

Scott Beck and Bryan Woods made quite the name for themselves when "A Quiet Place" hit theaters in 2018. As the writers of the film, they had a massive hit on their hands, and one that has gone on to spawn an entire franchise. But they've since moved on to directing as well, with their latest movie an equally ambitious sci-fi feature in the form of "65." Starring Adam Driver in the lead role, the duo finally gave modern audiences a big dinosaur movie that was divorced from the "Jurassic Park" franchise (read our review here). And for those who would like to see that action unfold on their TV from the comfort of home, we've got some good news for you.
