He was educated at Wootton Court Preparatory School (1937), St Edmund's
School, Canterbury (1938-1939) and read Philosophy and Pscyhology at
Edinburgh University after the Second World War.
Was considered one of the great film-makers of the 20th Century, having
made more than 150 films for television and the cinema. He won more
than 40 major awards including four Emmy and three Peabody awards.
He was in the process of writing his memoirs, but his memory was failing
from his Alzheimer's. His wife Georgina completed the works "Growing
Into War," published in late 2005.
In October 1998, Gill's younger son, Nicholas, a talented chef who at
one time had a Michelin star at Hambledon Hall, disappeared and has
never been seen again.
