Exclusive: Fox’s 2023-2024 schedule will not include the network’s two highest-rated drama series of 2022-23.
The move of flagship 9-1-1 to ABC was announced in May. Now its spinoff, 9-1-1: Lone Star, which was renewed for a fifth season by Fox in May, will not return with new episodes this spring. Instead, the drama starring Rob Lowe will produce 12 episodes to air in fall 2024, making fans’ wait for Season 5 extra long.
Like any other linear or streaming series, 9-1-1: Lone Star has been impacted by the double Hollywood strikes. Earlier this fall, Fox and producing studio 20th Television had been discussing an 18-episode order — six episodes for midseason — and 12 for fall, sources said. As the SAG-AFTRA strike stretched into November, those plans changed, and the two sides ultimately agreed on 12 episodes for fall 2024.

Fox is bringing in some repeats of 9-1-1: Lone Star to its fall schedule as it tries to remind viewers that scripted drama still has a place on broadcast TV amid the writers and actors strikes.
The move sees unscripted competition series I Can See Your Voice, which has completed production of its third season, to midseason.
Season 4 of 9-1-1: Lone Star will air starting on Tuesday September 19 at 9 pm, after season 3 of Name That Tune.
The hope is that it can get some traction for the return of 9-1-1: Lone Star with its fifth season once the dual strikes are over. It comes as the show’s parent show 9-1-1 was not renewed by Fox in May, instead set to move to ABC, whose sibling studio 20th TV produces, once the strikes are over.

Exclusive: Neal McDonough (The Flash), D.B. Woodside (Lucifer) and Amanda Schull (Suits) are set for key recurring roles opposite Rob Lowe on the fourth season of Fox’s 9-1-1: Lone Star.
McDonough plays Sgt. Ty O’Brien, a hard-assed police sergeant who we met last season when he butted heads with Owen (Lowe). McDonough guest-starred as the character in one episode in Season 3.

After the beautiful restoration of Batman: The Animated Series to Blu-ray, now in time for holiday gift-giving is the Blu-ray edition of Superman: The Complete Animated Series. When the DVD edition arrived in 2009, I wrote in part:
“All the love and attention lavished on the Dark Knight was poured into this show, which was brighter and shinier, the villains larger in scope and giving the animators a chance to bust loose. Superman works great in animation and after the lackluster efforts from Filmation, Hanna-Barbera, and Ruby-Spears, this one clearly shows the potential fulfilled.
“As usual, the voice casting is fairly top-notch with Tim Daly alternating nicely between Superman and Clark Kent, sparring playfully with Dana Delany’s Lois Lane. Clancy Brown is wonderfully malevolent as Luthor and his ever-present menace is well handled, matching the reboot version launched a decade earlier.”

The team at Warner Animation were enjoying unrivaled success with their 1990s offerings from Animaniacs to Batman: The Animated Series. As a result, as they retired Bats after 65 award-winning episodes, they decided to roll the dice on something bolder. For a change, they were looking to the future and not the comics for inspiration. What if, they wondered, Bruce Wayne aged out of being Batman but the need for the Caped Crusader remained? Who would inherit the mantle of the bat?
As it turns out, they settled on a teen, Terry McGinnis (Will Friedle), to cross paths with Wayne (Kevin Conroy). Where once he relied on Alfred or Oracle for guidance, now he would direct the actions of his unlikely successor in the series Batman Beyond.
Given the futuristic designs and strong storytelling, the audiences proved loyal to the new franchise and the show lasted 52 episodes, spawning fresh merchandising opportunities...

When you consider how the producers behind Batman: The Animated Series were once instructed by execs at WB to develop a show about a “teenage Batman,” you can only imagine how things could’ve turned out horribly in less capable hands. But since we had the likes of Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, Alan Burnett and Glen Murakami at the helm, we got the gem that was Batman Beyond.
Long story short, this bold series took place fifty years after the events of the aforementioned Batman: Tas, and saw the young Terry McGinnis inherit the mantle of the Dark Knight – with an aged Bruce Wayne as his mentor, no less. Featuring the voice talents of Will Friedle and Kevin Conroy, a mostly all-new rogues gallery and a kick-ass heavy metal/electronica soundtrack, it’s no wonder this bad boy has lived on in the hearts of fans the world over.

Despite a fair amount of beloved DC cartoons being released on Blu-ray, there remain some glaring omissions. That said, one would think the likes of Superman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond won’t be far behind.

CBS’ modern Sherlock Holmes series Elementary will see a seventh season. Like with another just renewed veteran drama that had been on the bubble, Criminal Minds, CBS the network would not say whether it would be the series’ final season. Elementary welcomes Sherlock Holmes' new protegee, Kitty Winter, in the season three opener...
This review contains spoilers.
3.1 Enough Nemesis To Go Around
“You don’t need me anymore”. By inference, those were the five words with which Holmes took abrupt leave of Watson at the end of Elementary season two. She might not, Sherlock, but as this episode showed, we sorely do.
Proving that the arrival of Jonny Lee Miller wearing a ridiculous helmet will improve any TV show tenfold, Elementary’s season three opener but only kicked into gear when Sherlock popped up dressed like a thrift store Cyberman. Before that, the episode had got off to a brisk start with a classic locked-room mystery, but lacked Elementary’s vital ingredient: Miller.
It was a muted Sherlock we were given to begin with, a repentant, soul-bearing version of the usually imperious character. His confession to Watson that he...

If you’re like me and you’re the type of person who likes to IMDb films before you watch them so you have a good idea what to expect, you’ll find it useful to know that Show Pieces isn’t one film. It’s actually a set of three short films that tie together, albeit a little loosely in the case of the first and second, all of which form a prelude to a planned feature called The Show. Normally what I would do is write about the first act then describe the experience, but in this case I’ll write about the first two short films which lead into the last.
First, we get Act of Faith, which is the shortest of the three.

Elementary, Season 2: Episode 23 – “Art in the Blood”
Written by Bob Goodman
Directed by Guy Ferland
Airs Thursday nights at 10 on CBS
Fans of the Sherlock Holmes mythology will not be surprised to see that Mycroft is, in fact, working for MI6. While it is the reveal that many people were probably expecting and one that makes total sense given the hints of Mycroft’s backstory we’ve seen this season, I was still holding out hope that Robert Doherty and his team had something slightly different in their arsenal. Elementary, after all, has done a fine job of loosely adapting Conan Doyle’s work in a contemporary setting, taking certain liberties that have really paid off in the long run. It doesn’t make the decision to use Mycroft in this way disappointing, but I wonder if the character could have remained compelling without having to get the British secret service involved.

Elementary, Season 2: Episode 18 – “The Hound of the Cancer Cells”
Written by Bob Goodman
Directed by Michael Slovis
Airs Thursday nights at 10 on CBS
After a few fairly by-the-numbers entries of Elementary in the past weeks, “The Hound of the Cancer Cells” grounds the detective series back into the sphere in which it usually excels: character. Even with a guest turn from character actor Mather Zickel, the main crime plot is lacking in terms of drawing the viewer into something that she ought to care about. That might sound like a harsh criticism given that Elementary is essentially a police procedural, but a lacking crime plot doesn’t have to be an obstacle. Nor does it have to be the A-story of a given episode. “The Hound of the Cancer Cells” makes good on that by bringing two different character-based issues part of its concern.
Both, actually, revolve around Detective Bell.

Sean Pertwee steals the show in this week's Elementary. Here's Frances' review...
This review contains spoilers.
2.17 Ears To You
Combining the macabre and the bizarre is something Elementary does very well. Remember Holmes’ repeatedly thwarted attempts to trepan a human skull a few weeks ago? The de-eyeballed Oriental Studies professor last season? This year’s ballerina Julienne? Weird and gross are a speciality of Elementary’s cases, and the solution to this week’s really took the biscuit.
It wasn’t the severed human ears in a box that really got me - crime TV viewers have seen appendages aplenty sliced, iced and delivered by FedEx in our time - but the ones growing out of a woman’s back. That, even for a seasoned detective drama fan, was a first. (Why Sarah Cushing decided to grow two ears when surely one would do is anybody’s guess.

Elementary, Season 2: Episode 16 – “The One Percent Solution”
Written by Bob Goodman (story by Bob Goodman & Craig Sweeny)
Directed by Guy Ferland
Airs Thursday nights at 10 on CBS
On the spectrum of tonal heaviness, Elementary usually leans to the lighter side of things, but it’s rarely as light as “The One Percent Solution” is. In a way, this is a very unusual episode of the series, especially amid a season that has taken steps to become more serious than its fun debut season, which could occasionally enthrall. “The One Percent Solution” doesn’t exactly suffer because of this, since the almost slapstick comedy lands fairly well. Additionally, bringing back Lestrade for this episode makes the detour more enjoyable to take part in. Yet, it still manages to feel out of character, which is even more odd when you consider that Craig Sweeny (one of Elementary‘s executive producers and...

Sean Pertwee guest stars in this week's Elementary, a witty, delightful episode...
This review contains spoilers.
2.16 The One Percent Solution
“We own chickens, don’t we?” Lucy Liu’s resigned punch line to this week’s Elementary topped off a highly entertaining episode from writer Bob Goodman.
The case itself was Elementary by the numbers, right down to the culprit being revealed as the harmless-looking witness interviewed and dismissed early on. (If Holmes and Watson were just to familiarise themselves with a season one box-set, they could save themselves a great deal of effort by just nabbing the sweet “I’m still not over the shock” witness from the off). By Elementary’s own rules, the bomber was either going to be the Labor Department Undersecretary or the restaurant manager, but as a wealthy white-collar ruling classes-type, the baddy odds were stacked in her favour.

Elementary, Season 2: Episode 11 – “Internal Audit”
Written by Bob Goodman
Directed by Jerry Levine
Returns January 2nd
Ever since the second season premiere, I’ve been singing the praises of the inclusion of Rhys Ifans on Elementary and the general attention to the serialization – the “mythology” episodes, a phrase borrowed from The X-Files. Although I would have liked to have seen a bigger episode than we got in “Internal Audit” before the series goes on winter break, it’s actually an interesting example of how Elementary has the ability to create the feeling of serialization without relying on characters like Mycroft and Irene Adler. These last three episodes have really sunk their teeth into judging Sherlock for the kind of person he is. The most important part of that judgment is that it’s been as objective as possible, without outright condemning Holmes for his cockiness to the point of...

Elementary, Season 2: Episode 8 – “Blood is Thicker”
Written by Bob Goodman
Directed by John Polson
Airs Thursday nights at 10 on CBS
While cable television generally houses the majority of great drama series at any given time, network offerings like Elementary and Arrow have been quietly stringing together sophomore seasons that have been as much fun to watch as anything else this fall. And even if seconds seasons are often the strongest in a series run, it’s interesting to ask why. In Elementary‘s case (pun…intended!), everything about these first eight episodes is virtually the same form, content and style of its first season with the exception of a heavier emphasis on serialization. In 24 episodes, we only got two hours of Irene Adler. In just a third of that amount, Rhys Ifans’ Mycroft has popped up three times already, and the conclusion to “Blood is Thicker” sets up his...

We should have seen this coming. Last fall, Warner Animation unleashed Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, adapting the first two issues of Frank Miller’s seminal prestige format miniseries. In January, we finally got Part 2, completing the story of 50 year old Bruce Wayne being forced to don the cape and cowl once more, to bring justice back to a crumbling Gotham City. Out now is Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Deluxe Edition, seamlessly editing the two sections into a 148-minute feature.
As previously reviewed, the adaptation is largely successful, recreating the bleak look and feel of a fascist world, protected by a Man of Steel working for a government Wayne no longer recognizes. The story is clearly Miller’s musing on the role of heroes in the time of Ronald Reagan but it is also a thrilling adventure, looking at a bitter, somewhat broken hero who has turned his...

Few people have as much insight into the rise and run of "The X-Files" as Frank Spotnitz.
Spotnitz joined the show as a writer in its second season and worked as a writer/producer until the Fox drama ended its nine-season run. He rose to the level of executive producer, directed episodes of the show and worked on the "X-Files" movies that were released during and after the show's run.
None of it was easy.
Part of the reason an obscure show that aired on Friday nights rose to such heights of popularity and influence was because Chris Carter, the show's creator and executive producer, was a demanding boss.
"He was really uncompromising," Spotnitz said in an interview about his time on "The X-Files." "He didn’t care if you didn't like him because he was being so difficult, but he just insisted that you do your best."

With 2013 being the 75th anniversary of Superman and Man of Steel scheduled to come out this summer it was a forgone conclusion DC would release their emblematic direct to home media animated feature this year. DC certainly has been more successful than their marvelous competition at translating their classic stories to this format. Superman: Unbound however, ends up being a mediocre entry for this franchise. With a limited scope and a stereotypical plot it adds nothing to the Superman mythos. It feels less like an extended feature and more like a pilot episode of an upcoming television series. The animation and voice acting are both handled with care, but neither is given that much to work with. The...

For the past eight years, Batman received all the love at the movies when it comes to DC Comics' characters. That's all about to change on June 14 when "Man of Steel" hits theaters. DC and Warner Premiere aren't going to settle for TV commercials and trailers to get people pumped up. Two new comic books and a DC Universe Animated Original movie entitled "Superman Unbound" are keeping the super hero fresh on everyone's minds as well."Superman Unbound" serves as a tasty appetizer for the main meal coming up. The Man of Steel joins forces with his cousin, Supergirl, to battle Brainiac after the super villain shrinks down Metropolis and adds it to his collection of cities from different planets he's destroyed. Superman must find a way to keep Braniac from destroying the Earth and save all the captured cities of the universe, including Krypton's capitol Kandor.

Superman is a science fiction story. What else can you say about the sole survivor of a doomed planet coming to live on Earth? As a result, some of the best stories about the Man of Steel have been science fiction in nature so it’s a wonder that it has taken this long before one of his confrontations with fellow alien Brainiac was brought to the screen. The feature films keep reusing Lex Luthor and General Zod, ignoring the computer construct from the distant world of Colu, who has captured specimen cities from countless worlds, including one from Krypton.

The second part of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns demonstrates how the world has changed since the graphic novel source material was published in 1986. Frank Miller’s reinvention of Batman was also his personal reaction to the conservative, jingoistic United States of America of the decade.
