Sabrina and Maurice have been friends and co-workers (for better or worse) since Sistas‘ first season. But cellmates? That would be a new one.
The Tyler Perry drama returns for Season 5 tonight (BET, 9/8c), just two months after Sabrina and Maurice were arrested for conspiracy to commit bank robbery in the Season 4 finale — and it sounds like the twists have only just begun.

This Is Us' Mandy Moore Attended Rebecca's Funeral in the Series Finale: 'I Just Wanted to Be There'
When it came time for Rebecca’s funeral in This Is Us‘ series finale, the actress who played the Pearson matriarch for six seasons thought it would be proper to pay her respects like everyone else.
So Mandy Moore made sure she was on set while Rebecca’s sendoff was being filmed, she tells TVLine.

We haven’t known This Is Us‘ Phillip very long… but way he gazed at Kate in Tuesday’s season premiere told us a lot about the heretofore reserved Brit. That said, new cast addition Chris Geere previews that even though a flash-forward in Season 5 clued us in to the fact that Kate and Phillip will eventually marry, there’ll be no whirlwind romance between the two. Instead, Geere says, there’ll be a “slow build” from co-workers to life partners.
And that makes sense, given how Kate is very married — to Toby — at the current point in the story.

This Is Us‘ Beth finished Season 5 on a true low. Sure, she had the love of her politically ascendant husband and three great kids. But her dance studio had closed — thanks, Covid — and it looked like her years-long dream of pursuing an arts career was over.
However, we know from the flash-forward that jumps to the time of Rebecca’s (likely) deathbed that Beth will preside over a dance academy at some point in the future. So when TVLine got the chance to ask Susan Kelechi Watson about bridging the gap between Sad Present-Day Beth and Dance Academy Boss Beth,...

Those Rebecca-on-her-deathbed flash-forwards with which This Is Us likes to tease us every once in a while are tough on series star Mandy Moore, but maybe not for the reasons you’d think. “It’s sad, but it’s more of a challenge not to let my own emotions about where the scenes are going influence what’s happening to Rebecca,” Moore tells TVLine. “I don’t want those to bleed through. But wow,” she adds, laughing, “what a crazy journey of going through five-and-a-half hours of hair and makeup to play those scenes with Justin [Hartley] and Sterling [K. Brown].”

The 2021 Emmy nominations won’t be announced until July 13, but I’m already prepared to make an early plea to the voters: Kenan Thompson deserves two acting nominations this year. The funnyman has twice been recognized in Best Comedy Supporting Actor for his work on “Saturday Night Live” (2018 and 2020), and now he’s the star of his own sitcom, “Kenan,” for which he’ll contend for Best Comedy Actor. Of course, Thompson took home his first Emmy in 2018 for Best Music & Lyrics for the “SNL” song “Come Back, Barack,” but he’s never won for acting.

But in Season 10, she’s sure to find out that the boy’s mother Carol is not someone whose s— list she wants to be on, much less atop. “Knowing Carol’s history, I think [a smackdown is] pretty likely,” Ep Greg Nicotero told TVLine on the Saturn Awards red carpet. “She really doesn’t take things lying down.”

This week’s question: In honor of the 25th anniversary of “Friends,” who is your favorite character on the show? Why?
Eric Deggans (@deggans), NPR
For a TV critic with some, um, seniority, it is odd to go from covering Friends as a contemporary TV show to covering it as a nostalgia phenomenon. So my feelings about “Friends” characters have gone through an evolution. When the show started, I liked David Schwimmer’s Ross Geller the most. Hard to remember now, but he was the most established actor when the show started, particularly following a well-received guest role on “NYPD Blue,” and I felt his character on “Friends” was the most developed in the early days of the show.

Will the City of Brotherly Love love the Pearsons?
After some rough times in Season 3, This Is Us‘ Randall and Beth found a solution to their family’s woes: moving from suburban New Jersey to Philadelphia, which would allow both Mr. and Mrs. Pearson to pursue their career dreams. Tuesday’s Emmy nominations make the answer much simpler than I would’ve hoped: “Better Things.” Pamela Adlon’s excellent FX comedy is made with such a potent combination of artistry and heart. Each piece is carefully crafted, from Adlon’s sweeping direction to the intimate vignette storytelling to the sparkling soundtrack to each individual performance and more. There are so many layers here, sliding in so smoothly one on top of the other, you don’t realize just how rich the personalities, story arcs, and overall experience is until you spend time with the series. The cast of “Suits” gets my vote for most stylish and credit goes to costume designer Jolie Andreatta, the woman who created gorgeous looks for all the men in the cast. I’m particularly partial to Gabriel Macht’s Tom Ford suits and traffic-stopping looks from designers such as Lanvin, Dior, Prada and Giambattista Valli for Sarah Rafferty as Donna Paulsen and Gina Torres as Jessica Pearson. Note: Torres continues to kill the style game on her “Pearson” spinoff, debuting this summer. Andreatta manages to make everyone at the firm look stylish at their appropriate earning levels. This week’s question: Are shorter runtimes better in the era of Peak TV?
Kaitlin Thomas (@thekaitling), TVGuide.com
I think everyone, whether they cover television as their job or not, can agree that shorter runtimes are better (the same can be said for shorter seasons). It is partly about the sheer amount of television vying for our attention at all times – it’s easier to watch more television if you’re not stuck watching episodes that top out at an hour or more all the time – but it’s also because a lot of television is unnecessary filler. “13 Reasons Why” not only had too many episodes, but it had too many episodes that went on and on and on without adding anything meaningful to the narrative. If there was ever a...

Haunting of Hill House creator Mike Flanagan confirms that he briefly toyed with ending Season 1 on a cliffhanger instead of the more serene, closed-ended conclusion viewers witnessed. And the auteur has zero doubt that he made the right creative call.

I really enjoy the costuming of “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” which I frankly think is in a league of it’s own. However, I’d also include “Glow” in this conversation, both for the wrestling costumes as well as the civilian clothes everyone wears in their free time. “Glow” captures the sort of grungy, abject tackiness of the ‘80s in a way that’s really well-calibrated. You can look at the way Betty Gilpin and Alison Brie are costumed, and it tells you so much about their relationship to each other and where each woman’s character is in her career,...

Whether the Maya & Marty TV show on NBC will be cancelled or renewed for a second season is still up in the air. Talk at the Summer 2016 TCA presser indicates the network likes the live variety series starring comedians Maya Rudolph and Martin Short, but wishes the ratings had been more robust.Chairman Robert Greenblatt has reportedly said Lorne Michaels' newest TV show did well enough that the Peacock Network is looking for a way to "sustain" it. Per entertainment reporter Diane Gordon, Greenblatt added, "It's a new franchise. You try things. Six episodes yielded a lot of great stuff."Read More…...

At their TCA presentation today, newly-appointed HBO programming chief Casey Bloys was seemingly unprepared for reporter's questions about the network's use of sexual violence against women, something many viewers have noted as a recurring theme. Bloys, a former comedy executive, joined the network in May and was set to speak on several of HBO's properties at the TCA event today. But when one reporter's question about the rape of women as a plot device was brushed off, others rallied to the cause. The Hollywood Reporter wrote of the scene: Five reporters pushed Bloys on the HBO dramas' penchant for including rape, murder and other violence (particularly against women) as plot devises, as the conversation about an opening scene in Westworld and [Game of] Thrones' track record nearly hijacked the entire panel. Bloys, who was visibly frustrated by the repetitive line of questioning, pointed to the fact that men are frequently victims...

Question: Love Ask Ausiello! Anything on Grey’s Anatomy? —Mark
Ausiello: Not just anything but something quite intriguing. “Somebody comes along during the season from Owen’s past,” the doc’s portrayer, Kevin McKidd, revealed to us at Saturday’s #Tgit-themed Hollywood soiree. And, though he wouldn’t say whether the “somebody” would be played by Martin Henderson, who’s slated to debut around midseason, McKidd did admit that the character in question “ignites a lot of things...

Today was the NBC Universal Summer Press Day, and tons of new summer series held panels detailing what to expect this season. Among these featured shows was Aquarius, an upcoming 13-episode “event series” airing Thursdays on NBC beginning May 28. Relatively few details have been released before today about this David Duchovny-starring vehicle, which centers on the missing persons investigation that will eventually lead to Charles Manson. The show’s official Twitter (@NBCAquarius) live-tweeted (and retweeted) the panel, revealing plenty of interesting facts about the highly anticipated series. Here are some of the highlights: - Aquarius is a “work of historical fiction,” and it was originally planned as a series of five novels. In fact, the characters played by Duchovny, Gray Damon, and Emma Dumont were all created for the show. When you watch #Aquarius, Duchovny says “it’s historical fiction” – not a documentary. Good to keep in mind. — Diane Gordon…...

James Corden is off to a solid start with critics as the host of the “Late Late Show” on CBS. After premiering Monday night, most media agreed that Corden turned in a funny, affable and respectable performance, though there is definitely room for improvement. “ debuts go, his was very good,” TheWrap‘s Diane Gordon wrote in her review. “Following in the feel-good footsteps of Jimmy Fallon, Corden promised to try to put a smile on viewers’ faces as they went to sleep. He made good on this promise during his first hour hosting the show.” See Photos: 10 of David Letterman’s Most Memorable Guests Jonathan.

Nashville divas Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere) & Rayna James (Connie Britton)
Who doesn’t love a good soap? And there are plenty of them on the air now like the uber-popular Downton Abbey, ABC’s revitalized Revenge and even shows like Homeland have serialized elements that hook us.
And then there’s Nashville, a soap set in the exciting and already over the top world of country music. There are the successful country divas like stoic veteran Rayna James (Connie Britton) and bratty superstar Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere), the up-and-comers like songwriter Gunnar (Sam Palladio), singer Scarlett (Clare Bowen) and guitarist Avery (Jonathan Jackson, whose soap pedigree goes back to General Hospital) and late last season the series added Will Lexington (Chris Carmack), a closeted country heartthrob.
Will doesn’t believe a gay man can also be a country music superstar, and he might just be right on that score. Despite...

The Brooklyn Nine-Nine cast: (l-r) Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Lo Truglio, Andre Braugher,
Andy Samberg, Melissa Fumero, Terry Crews and Chelsea Peretti.
The new Fox sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine could’ve been your stereotypical workplace comedy relying on predictable romances with a cheeky lead taking the best lines and putting everyone else in the shadows.
Thankfully, the series, created by Dan Goor and Michael Schurr (who also created NBC’s Parks And Recreation), is off to a good start by creating an ensemble work comedy led by Saturday Night Live vet Andy Samberg as Detective Jake Peralta. The rest of the stellar cast includes Stephanie Beatriz (the tough-as-nails Diaz), Terry Crews (muscley squad leader with a big heart, Terry), Melissa Fumero (competitive Santiago), Chelsea Peretti (the sardonic Gina), Joe Lo Truglio (heart on his sleeve Boyle) and Andre Braugher as Captain Raymond Holt. Holt casually revealed in the pilot episode that he...

I could make any number of jokes here (ie. “Happy Town will be sad”), but I’ll somehow refrain myself from doing so (mostly because they suck). Unfortunately, the new ABC series Happy Town suffered from poor ratings from the beginning – which only happened to be a few weeks ago. Despite a solid cast with actors such as Sam Neill, Steven Webber and Amy Acker, the show premiered to lackluster ratings and they have only declined.
ABC has, therefore, pulled the show from its schedule as a mid-season replacement. An episode will air tonight (Wednesday, May 12) in its regular 10:00 p.m. timeslot and then the show will disappear until June 2, when the remaining four episodes of Happy Town will be burned off on Wednesday nights during the summer.
ABC seems to be searching for that elusive heir to Lost with sci-fi and mystery shows such as FlashForward, V and now Happy Town.
