Two from Magnolia Pictures, the story of an iconic record album design firm back and a sighting of Brian Cox usher in a specialty weekend with smoke clearing over New York City. Acrid plumes from Canadian wildfires have smothered the key arthouse market over the past few days in an unusual air quality event that had Mayor Eric Adams urging people to home.
Friday the sky was visible and air fresher, a boon for all — including the ongoing Tribeca Festival, which opened Wednesday night and will be unspooling 100+ features and events through June 17.
New openings: From Magnolia, Dalíland by Mary Harron starring Ben Kingsley as the iconic artist in 20 markets (including Quad in NYC and Nuart in LA) and on VOD. Written by John C. Walsh. Having been responsible for some of the most iconic photographs since he picked up a camera nearly five decades ago, Anton Corbijn seamless transition to music videos then narrative features and now, with Squaring the Circle (The Story of Hipgnosis), he’s helmed his first documentary. Charting the entertaining tale of Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey “Po” Powell’s album-art design studio Hipgnosis, the film features quite a roster of interviewees: Roger Waters, David Gilmour, and Nick Mason of Pink Floyd; Jimmy Page and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin; Paul McCartney; Peter Gabriel; Graham Gouldman of 10cc; Noel Gallagher; and more.
As the film begins playing at NYC’s Film Forum today, ahead of an LA opening on June 16 and nationwide screenings on June 20, I spoke with Corbijn about embarking on his first documentary, his favorite album covers, his involvement in the marketing process of his films, reflecting on The American,...

No idea was ever too much, or inconvenient, for the graphic artists Hipgnosis, whose iconic album artwork designs serve as the centerpiece for Anton Corbijn’s documentary Squaring the Circle: (The Story of Hipgnosis). In the latest trailer for the film, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year, musicians Paul McCartney, Nick Mason, Jimmy Page, and more reflect on Aubrey “Po” Powell and Storm Thorgerson’s reign and willingness to go the distance.

This article contains spoilers for Poker Face episode 4.
With a charged reference to the 1976 death of The Yardbirds singer Keith Relf, Peacock’s Poker Face teaches a valuable music industry lesson: Song pluggers should check their cables before plugging in. Especially drummers, surrounded by metallic conductors, trying to break out original material. When they do, as Phil Collins of Genesis or Don Brewer of Grand Funk Railroad can attest, those songs can change the group dynamic and take center stage. Electricity like that should be channeled.
Which is why the human lie-detector goes metal detector in Charlie Cale’s (Natasha Lyonne) case-of-the-week, “Rest in Metal.” The signature hit song for Robin Ruin’s (Chloe Sevigny) metal band Doxxxology, “Staplehead,” was written by the drummer. Said drummer moved on, and not only is the band now stuck with it as the closing song for every show, but they have to pay...

It may be the most famous album cover ever created.
The background – black. In the foreground, a shaft of white light pierces a triangular prism and exits separating into brilliant bands of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet.
The artwork, as any true rock fan can instantly tell you, is for the 1973 Pink Floyd album Dark Side of the Moon. We know the band, we know the record, but who designed that album cover? It came out of the exceptional British design firm Hipgnosis, the subject of the new documentary Squaring the Circle (the story of hipgnosis). Anton Corbijn directed the film, which made its world premiere over the Labor Day Weekend at the Telluride Film Festival.
“The beauty of white on black [background], with colors, it’s just the simplicity,” Corbijn says of that prismatic design. “I think it’s a beautiful album sleeve, and I think it probably defines the album sleeve.

It’s been three decades since Ringo Starr founded his All Starr supergroup and took the stage with some of rock and roll’s biggest luminaries, creating an exceptional legacy of performances of some of the greatest hits of all time culled from Starr’s extraordinary catalog as a solo artist and as Beatle, as well as the All Starr Band members’ substantive songbook.

It looks like Kylie Jenner isn’t the only Kylie in town. The 19-year-old reality star reportedly lost her trademark court battle to Australian singer, Kylie Minogue, the Daily Mail reports.

The cosmetics queen filed to trademark her first name in 2014, but was quickly opposed by Minogue, 48. The “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” singer sent a list of reasons for opposing Jenner’s trademark request to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
In the alleged letter she called Jenner “a secondary reality television personality” and called herself a “internationally-renowned performing artist, humanitarian and breast cancer activist known worldwide simply as ‘Kylie.’”
The office reportedly rejected Jenner’s request, but the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star has already filed an appeal.

Image Source: Getty / Tristar Media You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who says Ryan Gosling lacks sex appeal (if you disagree, look at these and get back to us). Unfortunately, it seems like someone at Madame Tussauds is determined to spread the alternative fact that the Golden Globe winner is not one of Hollywood's hottest men by turning him into an extremely creepy wax figure. Sure, we can all tell it's modeled after Ryan, but something about it is just . . . off. The too-pointy mustache? The oiled-up forearms? The eyes that are way too close together? Whatever it is, people on Twitter have plenty of opinions about it. From claiming that the wax figure is pure nightmare fuel to comparing it to a hotter version of David Spade, check out their most hilarious reactions below: ryan gosling's new wax figure looks a bit like if joe dirt cleaned himself up pic.

It’s been a great year for film music. I say that as someone who had to endure the laughably dated qualities of Alberto Iglesias’ Exodus: Gods and Kings and had to swallow the pill that is Howard Shore‘s latter days Middle-earth music.
But it has been a great year. Clint Mansell gave us haunting, complex soundscapes in Noah, the Alexandre Desplat Hive Mind unleashed another five feature-length scores on the planet, and we even got a peak at John Williams‘ forthcoming music in that Star Wars trailer.
So what was the best of the bunch? For simplicity’s sake, I’ve limited this list to movies with U.S. theatrical runs in 2014. When possible, I’ve also linked to our reviews and select cues on Spotify, although you’ll note the occasional YouTube or SoundCloud embed as well. Let’s do this:

Were you surprised at Walter's reaction after the kidnapping and rescue?
