We all love a "fun" horror movie, right? I'm talking about horror that feels like the cinematic equivalent of a roller coaster — fast, exhilarating, scary, but ultimately harmless. You buy the ticket and take the ride. But one of the things I love about the horror genre is that it's so damn flexible. On one hand, you can have fun horror movies like I just mentioned. And then there's the complete opposite: horror movies that make you squirm. Horror movies designed to make your skin crawl. Bugs, monsters, blood, body horror — the type of stuff that makes you feel like you need to take a shower after watching it. Those are the types of horror movies we're highlighting here — gnarly stuff, gross stuff, stuff that's going to make you feel more than a little icky. Be warned: it's about to get disgusting up in here.

Batman has been played by a slew of talents, but one of the most iconic versions was played by Kevin Conroy, for over two decades. However, the actor sadly passed away in 2022, leaving behind big shoes to fill when it came to his portrayal of Batman. The actor had already shaped an iconic interpretation of the Dark Knight.

However, there was another actor who was well suited for the role of Batman in the animated sphere and might seem like the obvious choice to be the heir to Conroy’s cowl. Given that this actor has played Batman in multiple films, most notably in the critically acclaimed and well-received Batman: Under the Red Hood, he might be the perfect choice for the role of Batman.

Carla Gugino worried that by playing “Gerald’s Game,” she might lose her career forever.
The actress revealed to Buzzfeed that first collaborating with future “Haunting of Hill House” showrunner Mike Flanagan on the 2017 indie Stephen King adaptation was a daunting task.
“It was always considered an un-adaptable book by Stephen King,” Gugino said. “Also, someone was attached to play the role before. So, from the moment that I spoke to Mike Flanagan to the moment we were filming ‘Gerald’s Game,’ it was literally two weeks. So, to come on to that role in that project, in which I was chained to a bed within that period of time, was a real risk. And I thought, ‘We’re either going to do something really special here, or this is the end of my career.’ You know what I mean? There’s no middle ground here. I’m so thankful that it was the former.

X-Men ’97 has conquered the entire internet and superhero world as fans are elated to have their favorite show back after ages. In a time when the MCU is fumbling with most of its live-action projects, the animated X-Men show proves how a good show can make a difference. The animated show’s success has even raised a conversation about the revival of many other fan-favorite shows. Amidst this, certain DC fans also argue that reviving the Dcau could be an incredible move.
A still from X-Men ’97
The ‘DC Animated Universe’ or Dcau is one of the most celebrated aspects of the world of Superman and Batman. It presented some of the best story adaptations that can even beat most of DC’s live-action adaptations. Although revisiting the animated realm of DC sounds lucrative, the absence of the legendary Kevin Conroy has the fans doubtful if it will be a good idea.

When Steven Spielberg made The Post, the real-life story about how the Washington Post broke the story of the infamous Pentagon Papers, he recruited an all-star cast. While Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks were the top-liners, the ensemble also included Bob Oedenkirk, Sarah Paulson, Bradley Whitford, Alison Brie, Bruce Greenwood, and David Cross. It was literally Spielberg’s dream team of actors for the film; as he told us when the movie was released, all of the actors in the film were his first choices for the roles. You can almost invariably find your favorite actor’s best performances in their TV gigs, lead or not. There’s something about either maintaining a personality or convincingly growing through a transformation that needs a unique commitment. And that’s something a lot of big names in movies are often intimidated by. The abundance of critically acclaimed shows in 2023 has made it even more of a challenge to limit my favorites on this list of the best. So I’d leave it up to you to imagine the kind of impact the following performances must have had.
Phil Dunster In ‘Ted Lasso’

Frank Langella was slated to star in Mike Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher as Roderick Usher, the towering patriarch of the Usher dynasty, but mid-way through filming, Langella was fired after a misconduct allegation, and the role was recast with Bruce Greenwood.
While speaking with Wfpk‘s Kyle Meredith, Kate Siegel commented on the uncomfortable situation and praised Greenwood’s amazing work and decency.
“Most people who are correctly praising Bruce need to remember that every single scene that Bruce shot that wasn’t sitting down across from Carl Lumbly was an emergency reshoot. We redid almost all of it,” Siegel said. “It’s amazing what he did. It was heartbreaking. It was overwhelming and heartbreaking and disappointing, and people were hurt. Warning: The following contains spoilers for Oculus and The Fall of the House of Usher.
Of all the horror creators currently working in the business, few have the ability to tear at our heartstrings like Mike Flanagan. Beginning with the 2018 hit miniseries The Haunting of Hill House, the director’s horrific Netflix shows are just as likely to elicit cathartic sobs as hysterical screams. However, with a cast of unlikeable characters and a cavalcade of grisly deaths, Flanagan’s newest series The Fall of the House of Usher may signal a return to the grim horror of his early career. Films like Absentia, Hush, and Ouija: Original of Evil all center harsh and unforgiving stories – a gut punch rather than a bittersweet embrace. Perhaps the cruelest of these is Oculus, the 2013 story of a haunted mirror. Ten years after its premiere, this nihilistic movie still feels like a lean...

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for The Fall of the House of Usher and the works of Edgar Allen Poe.
In recent years, Mike Flanagan has become known for emotional adaptations of classic horror literature. After a series of original films, Flanagan brought Stephen King’s famously unfilmable novel Gerald’s Game to life then set his sights on the work of Shirley Jackson. His Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House dramatically expanded the legendary story and brought us all to tears with an intimate examination of parenting through the years. Flanagan followed this with The Haunting of Bly Manor, a mind-bending take on The Turn of the Screw, and The Midnight Club, a spooky mashup of Christopher Pike’s YA bibliography.

Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher is a horror story that thrills from the first episode to the last. The classic tale is from the writings of Edgar Allen Poe about the rise and fall of Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) and his powerful family and empire. Usher is the CEO of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals and has six very different children. He takes them all in and cares for them, not wanting to be set aside as his father did to him and his twin sister, Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell). Each episode sees the death of one of Usher’s six children...

One of Netflix’s best thriller series of 2023 is The Fall of the House of Usher. Starring big names like Bruce Greenwood and Carla Gugino, this series tells a story about a wealthy family whose time at the top has ended. However, with mysterious deaths in their family, something much darker in the patriarchy’s past has returned to haunt them all. The series is based on a book by Edgar Allan Poe, and the horror and intrigue doesn’t disappoint. For fans familiar with Mike Flanagan’s work, this series has several familiar faces whose recent projects include The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Haunting of Hill House, The Midnight Club,...

With Mike Flanagan’s latest, the Edgar Allen Poe-inspired The Fall of the House of Usher, production designer Laurin Kelsey had a lot of houses on her hands.
The Netflix horror series goes full-tilt into Poe, complete with episode titles referencing one of his notable works, and the main home of the series’ patriarch (played by Bruce Greenwood) being a twist on the one featured in the late writer’s original short story. It also stars Mary McDonnell, Henry Thomas, T’Nia Miller, Samantha Sloyan, Rahul Kohli, Kate Siegel, Sauriyan Sapkota, Kyliegh Curran, Carla Gugino, Carly Lumbly, Zack Gilford and Willa Fitzgerald.

One of the great delights of “The Fall of the House of Usher,” Mike Flanagan’s latest (and last) Netflix horror series is seeing truly terrible people get what they deserve, courtesy of Edgar Allan Poe classics. As patriarch (and a Richard Sackler-esque pharmaceuticals CEO) Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) looks on in increasing horror, his six children are picked off one by one in diabolically twisted — yet easily explained! — ways.
As Ben Travers wrote in his IndieWire review, “‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ channels its mushrooming rage into demonstrable blunt force and a number of grisly kills (not to mention eliciting a pair of juicy performances). The writer-director known for crafting ghostly horror stories that double as empathetic examinations of trauma keeps his latest’s plotting rather straightforward, albeit less poignant and more pissed off. Acclaimed horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan wears his influences on his sleeve. Based on his prolific output of TV shows and films, Flanagan clearly loves: Stephen King, classic horror literature, and most touchingly, his wife Kate Siegel (who has appeared in nearly every Flanagan project thus far).
Real Flana-heads know, however, that there’s one other thing the writer-director can’t get enough of: monologues. Oh, the monologues! Flanagan’s suite of Netflix series, including The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and most recently The Fall of the House of Usher have all been shockingly chatty endeavors. Though the horror maestro excels at conjuring dread with his camera work alone, Flanagan can’t seem to help himself from crafting bespoke, discursive diatribes around all the creepiness.
On the one hand, this is quite charming as Flanagan clearly loves watching his recurring crew of talented actors work at their craft.

The Fall of the House of Usher is mesmerizing it its own right; it’s a powerful meditation on life, death, corruption, and the destructive power of familial bonds. But if you weren’t an English major (or don’t remember your Poe unit from high school English class), you might’ve missed just how intricate the show is—and how carefully it interweaves many of Poe’s familiar works. Here, we break down many of the major references to Edgar Allan Poe poems and short stories within the Netflix limited series’ eight episodes. A Midnight Dreary Much of “A Midnight Dreary” is devoted to setting up the conflict and characters, but one of the key events is derived from Poe’s works. In the show’s opening, Roderick (Bruce Greenwood) and Madeleine’s (Mary McDonnell) mother mysteriously returns from the dead, having clawed her way out of a grave—a premature burial,...

Mike Flanagan’s creative partnership with Netflix has produced several memorable pieces of art over the last several years. His latest project for the streaming service, the gothic horror series “The Fall of the House of Usher,” is yet another that will have viewers talking.
The eight-episode drama skillfully blends the work and imagery of Edgar Allen Poe with a timely narrative about the Usher family, a privileged group who own a pharmaceutical company that is largely responsible for the current opioid crisis. Bruce Greenwood leads the cast as Roderick Usher, the patriarch who must confront his past in the wake of the violent deaths of all of his children. Joining Greenwood are several actors who’ve starred in Flanagan’s previous Netflix series, including Carla Gugino, Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, Henry Thomas and Zach Gilford, and new additions like Mary McDonnell and Mark Hamill, who turn in fantastic performances in the gripping tale.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Fall of the House of Usher Season 1, Episodes 1-8.] The Fall of the House of Usher serves up several mysteries to viewers, but one remains consistent throughout the episodes leading up to the finale, when all of the puzzle pieces click into place. Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood), the head of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, begins seeing visions of his dead children, and an unrecognizable figure is introduced in the backseat of his car when a Jester is seen poking his head out from the shadowed cabin. It’s an ominous and brief appearance, but it raises the question, who is the Jester? Well, we finally have some answers for you, but beware of major spoilers if you haven’t yet watched the full season of Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy‘s final Netflix series. This article contains spoilers for Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher.
As its title suggests, Mike Flanagan’s latest project for Netflix, The Fall of the House of Usher, is an intensely Edgar Allan Poe affair. The eight-episode series, which follows the modern day rise and fall of fictional opioid giant Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, is based on not only Poe’s epic “The Fall of the House of Usher” but many of his other seminal classics as well.
Fittingly, pretty much every character on the show is named after an Edgar Allan Poe creation. These range from the blindingly obvious (Bruce Greenwood’s Roderick Usher and Mary McDonnell’s Madeline Usher) to the less obvious (Katie Parker’s Annabel Lee) to the downright obscure (T’Nia Miller’s Victorine Lafourcade). One of The Fall of the House of Usher‘s most important characters, however, doesn’t appear to have...

But leave it to show creators Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy to turn a literary classic on its head.
While paying homage to the short story it’s named after, “The Fall of the House of Usher” managed to wrap up its complicated story of familial greed and failure while also sneaking in a couple of extra Poe Easter eggs. Consider this your guide on how this creepy miniseries ends.

Horror auteur Mike Flanagan is known for working with many of the same actors across his suite of spooky TV and film projects. Naturally, the writer/director’s latest for Netflix, the Edgar Allan Poe-inspired The Fall of the House of Usher, features quite a few familiar faces.
By our count, more than 20 actors from previous Flanagan projects also appear in Usher, including: Bruce Greenwood (Gerald’s Game), Samantha Sloyan, and Flanagan’s wife and long-time collaborator Kate Siegel. In addition to all the recurring players in Mike Flanagan’s acting troupe, however, there’s one Flana-newbie who outshines (pun intended) them all in The Fall of the House of Usher: Mark Hamill.

Edgar Allan Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher" may only be a few thousand words long, but in Mike Flanagan's sprawling and savage new Netflix series, it takes a whole lot longer for the members of House Usher to reach their ultimate fate. Across the series' eight episodes, members of the wealthy pharmaceutical family die disturbing and complex deaths at the hands of a curse patriarch Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) and his sister Madeline (Mary McDonnell) agreed to years ago. In a clever twist, though, each death ties back to a famous (or lesser-known) story or poem from the famously bleak author, all of them reimagined for a modern audience.

The Fall of the House of Usher is filmmaker Mike Flanagan’s gloriously morbid remix of author Edgar Allen Poe’s best-known stories and poems, and it’s winning raves from critics (with a 92 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes). Even those totally unfamiliar with Poe probably found some glimmer of recognition amid the show’s nods to his best-known tales — such as “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Raven” and “The Cask of Amontillado” — given how Poe’s stories have threaded through pop culture over the last 175 years or so.
But even Poe superfans probably couldn’t spot all the references — because there are dozens scattered throughout the show’s eight Gothic episodes.
So here they are (The Hollywood Reporter compiled this based on notes supplied by the show’s production team — I’m not going to pretend to be this smart; also, there’s always a chance that a...

Spoilers for "The Fall of the House of Usher" follow.
As horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan has gone from production to production, he's assembled a wholesale acting troupe along the way. Kate Siegel (his wife), Henry Thomas, Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood, Carl Lumbly, Michael Trucco, Rahul Kohli, Annabeth Gish — they're all in Flanagan's latest, "The Fall of the House of Usher," and if you look back through his filmography, you'll recognize their faces somewhere.
That said, Flanagan always includes a few actors who are new to him, and "House of Usher" is no different. One of those new faces is one that's otherwise eminently familiar: Mark Hamill. Like the rest of the main cast, Hamill's part is named after an Edgar Allan Poe character. In his case, the eponymous protagonist of "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket."

Following the breakout success of Shirley Jackson adaptation "The Haunting of Hill House," horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan returned to Netflix with a number of other spooky tales, and today opened the doors to his final cursed house in "The Fall of the House of Usher." Loosely based on the collected works of Edgar Allan Poe, the series explores the corrupted legacy of pharmaceutical magnate Roderick Usher and the grim deaths of his spoiled adult children.
Flanagan is known for slow-burn stories that are heavy on emotion, but "The Fall of the House of Usher" is a little different. In Flanagan's own words, "'Hill House' is kind of a string quartet, and '[The Haunting of] Bly Manor' is this delicate, kind of beautiful piece of classical piano music, and 'The Fall of the House of Usher' is heavy metal." Medical horror has always been central to the mysterious Edgar Allan Poe short story, "The Fall of the House of Usher." It opens when an unnamed narrator receives a letter from the ill Roderick Usher, whose sister, Madeline is experiencing cataleptic trances from an illness of her own. When she eventually passes, Roderick fears her body will be analyzed for medical study and embalmed. Instead of giving her over for an autopsy, Roderick decides to keep her in the family tomb for two weeks. Alas, in typical Poe fashion, it is revealed at the end that Madeline was entombed before she had actually passed.
In Mike Flanagan's "The Fall of the House of Usher," the titular family's relationship with medicine is generational. In this updated story, Roderick and Madeline's mother Eliza worked for a pharmaceutical company while also being a devout woman who believed God could heal better than any medicine.

Mike Flanagan's latest horror mini-series, "The Fall of the House of Usher," transposes the stories of Edgar Allan Poe to the 21st century. In this retelling, "The House of Usher" is a nouveau riche dynasty and the owners of a pharmaceutical corporation, Fortunato. Twin siblings Roderick (Bruce Greenwood) and Madeline (Mary McDonnell) sit at the head of that table, with other seats filled by Roderick's spoiled adult children -- six of them, from five different mothers, who all stand to inherit a piece of his fortune. Comparisons to the recently concluded "Succession" have already begun.

For the absurdly wealthy, it can seem like nothing in their lofty lives of opulence and egomania is the same as anything in our own. Their luxuries (indefinite trips around the world) are not our luxuries. Their worries our not our worries. Their rules are not our rules — even, it turns out, the golden one. Within Mike Flanagan’s interpretation of the Usher family, at least, the well-known advice of “do unto others” is little more than a punch line. Roderick (Bruce Greenwood), the patriarch of the pharmaceutical scions, explains how a joke he once told his children morphed into an accidental family motto. “It was in a comic book,” he says during an early episode of “The Fall of the House of Usher.” “‘The Wizard of Id’ — No. 4, I think, late ’60s — and the cover had a stout little king standing in a green tower.” The king bellows out to his pupils,...

– The latest (and likely final) spooky Netflix series from horror maestro Mike Flanagan before he moves on to his new overall deal at Amazon.
– A deeply angry allegory about the human wreckage wrought from the opioid crisis.
– An adaption of Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Fall of the House of Usher.”
– An Easter egg and reference bonanza of the rest of the Gothic literature titan’s classic works.
While all of those elements are of equal importance, it’s the Poe aspects that really shine through. Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher may just be the most effusive love letter to America’s spooky uncle that has ever been penned.

This post contains spoilers for episodes 3 & 4 of "The Fall of the House of Usher."
Horror director Mike Flanagan rarely relies on frequent jumpscares to deliver shocks and thrills, and his oeuvre primarily consists of raw, emotion-driven stories that aim to excavate the depths of the human psyche. To no one's surprise, his "The Fall of the House of Usher" — a modern reimagining of Edgar Allan Poe's short story of the same name, amalgamated with a dozen references to his work — also dives deep into the rot of emotions that fester, until they're potent enough to topple a formidable personal empire. Apart from the grisly deaths that mark almost every episode in this limited series, there are two instances of fairly graphic animal harm/death that can be potentially disturbing, especially for those who love and adore cats, whose presence takes on a special significance in the context of the Ushers and Poe's work.
