Ah, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Truly one of God’s finest creations. After the Nintendo Entertainment System helped rebound the very concept of video games and the Sega Genesis evolved past its limitations, Nintendo released this wonderful 16-bit console to help Nintendo reclaim that top spot. It’s the system that gave us so many classic games and so many classic characters. Characters like Yoshi, Diddy Kong, Mega Man X, Geno, Fox McCloud, Gabby Jay, Ness, and Aero the Acro-bat. Okay, maybe they weren’t all classics.
Still, the Snes is still such a beloved part of gaming history and has a spot in many hearts. Active for about a decade and with such a massive library, there are so many fascinating bits of trivia out there. Here are some interesting facts to celebrate the system that gave us the Rainbow Road.

When it opened in 1995 in Times Square, the All Star Café was supposed to be the sports world’s answer to Planet Hollywood. Not only was it developed by the same restaurant chain, but it borrowed from its playbook, attracting legends such as Joe Montana, Shaquille O’Neal, Ken Griffey Jr. and Andre Agassi to serve as ambassadors to the brand. But what began as a red carpet extravaganza slowly deteriorated, a victim of changing tastes and rocky finances.

This wasn’t supposed to be Joe Buck’s first assignment for ESPN.
The veteran sports announcer raised eyebrows earlier this year by jumping from his longtime roost at Fox Sports to the Disney sports giant, where he and colleague Troy Aikman are set to host “Monday Night Football.” On Thursday afternoon, however, Buck was doing something completely different. Here he was, sitting alongside golf analyst Michael Collins on ESPN2, watching Tiger Woods on the green at the 2022 PGA Championship and talking to baseball great Ken Griffey Jr. about his golf and baseball swings.
Even though the setting is relaxed and informal, it poses a challenge for Buck. “I have to remind myself the whole time it’s not what I typically do,” he says in an interview. “I have to kind of turn off the gene that I have that wants to be on top of all the action.

After writing 59 episodes during the golden years of “The Simpsons,” Swartzwelder discusses his process in a rare interview
Hardcore “Simpsons” fans know the name John Swartzwelder, the man who wrote dozens of classic episodes of the show during its golden years. Now he’s sharing the secret of his phenomenal success… and would you believe it involves comparing himself to a “crappy little elf”?
The legendary scribe is responsible for some of the most memorable episodes of “The Simpsons,” like the one where Johnny Carson juggled a car while singing opera on Krusty the Klown’s comeback special, and another where Ken Griffey Jr. took a spoonful of Mr. Burns’ brain tonic and said, “It’s like there’s a party in my mouth, and everyone’s invited!” He’s also the man behind Frank Grimes and the show’s darkest episode, “Homer’s Enemy.”

Sophia Chang realized interest in her work on Topps Project 2020 was skyrocketing when her street art-inspired Jackie Robinson card was auctioned on eBay for $4,500. To the artist, it was a green flag. “I was like, ‘Whoa, something is happening here and I need to pay attention to this.’”
Chang was not alone. The notoriety and financial boon of Topps Project 2020 took even the trading card company by surprise. Inspired by sneaker culture and streetwear, Topps embarked on a year-long event series that features 20 contemporary artists reimagining 20 iconic baseball rookie cards for a complete set of 400 cards. Using a print-on-demand model, each card is released on the company’s website for a 48-hour window, with single cards selling for a premium price point of $19.99. Great art, even at 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches, comes at a cost.

With a new decade approaching, Topps unveiled grand plans for an ambitious and unconventional series of baseball cards called Topps Project 2020, a one-of-a-kind trading card event that combined contemporary art and iconic baseball cards.
The concept was simple enough: 20 artists are reimagining 20 iconic baseball rookie cards—Griffey, Mays, Robinson, Koufax, and Clemente, to name only a few—for a complete set of 400 cards to be released over the course of 2020. Each artist brings a unique flavor to the mix. Ben Baller added bling to the Ichiro 2001. King Saladeen was inspired by New York street art when he crafted his 1992 Derek Jeter card. Fucci is going faceless. And JK5 has Mike Trout shooting lasers out of his eyes, in case you had any doubt that the Angels outfielder wasn’t Superman.
To market the project, the trading card manufacturer lined up year-long promotional events and ballpark exclusives to coincide...

For the last four decades or so, Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game has been preceded by the Home Run Derby. The sport’s best(-ish) sluggers step to the plate and launch long ball after long ball into stands of “ooo”-ing and “ahh”-ing spectators. While watching towering shots threaten to shatter the lights of the stadium makes for fleeting entertainment, the problem with the Home Run Derby is that the grandest of long balls only occur in the wild. About a month ago, we found out that the legendary Ken Griffey Jr. would adorn the cover of Mlb The Show 17. At today’s PlayStation Experience showcase though, we learnt that the presence of the Hall of Famer isn’t the only throwback found in the game.

After the series spotlighted athletes such as Josh Donaldson and Adrian Gonzalez for past entries, Mlb The Show 17 will pull from baseball’s past for cover duties next year. Seattle Mariner and Cincinnati Reds legend Ken Griffey Jr. will adorn the cover of 2017’s release, Sony announced today.
For those who grew up watching baseball in the 1990’s, Ken Griffey Jr. is one of the most imitated, and celebrated athletes of all time. A 13-time All-Star, 10-time Gold Glove winner and masher of 630 home runs, The Kid is an excellent choice for the cover of Mlb The Show 17. This is just another accolade for the legend, as 2016 also saw him go into the Baseball Hall of Fame. For those that follow that process, you’ll know that this is no small feat.

The answers: never, let’s hope not, definitely, keeping it old-school, and Eric Nally, best known as the leader of Ohio rockers Foxy Shazam. Though Foxy Shazam started as a post-hard-core affair in 2004 — think the Blood Brothers performing West Side Story and you're in the right ballpark — Foxy slowly evolved into more of a rock-radio act with a wild (and wildly offensive) minor hit about "the biggest black ass,” 2012’s "I Like It.” By that point, Nally had earned a reputation as...

Macklemore cemented his return to radio ubiquity this morning with his latest single, "Downtown," featuring hip-hop veterans Grandmaster Caz, Kool Moe Dee, and Melle Mel, along with Foxy Shazam front man (and Freddie Mercury doppelgänger) Eric Nally. It's as much a sequel to the duo's breakthrough "Thrift Shop" (except Macklemore's traded in his fur coat for a moped) as it is to Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars' throwback "Uptown Funk." For the "Downtown" video, Mack pulled out all the stops, re-creating West Side Story in his unofficial Broadway debut. There's choreography! And a Ken Griffey Jr. cameo? The whole elaborate production's overflowing with future memes that deserve a double take. Relive all the video's zaniest moments on loop in our Gif recap below. We begin with a strut. Oh, what a strut. They strut all the way to the moped store, where Mack scores a bike for $800. This is...

So, when Macklemore throws "fish to a player" in his brand new music video ... turns out the "player" who catches it is none other than The Kid himself, Ken Griffey Jr. Griffey has a super brief cameo is the new Macklemore video "Downtown" -- wearing his old Seattle Mariners uniform. Of course, Macklemore's from Seattle ... loves Seattle ... and with Griffey's history with the city, it's really not That big of a surprise he's in the video.

Screw your 1989 Ken Griffey Jr. Upper Deck rookie card ... an old woman from Boston just learned her family's been sitting on a Million Dollar baseball card stash for more than 100 years! The woman -- who has not revealed her name -- went on PBS' "Antiques Roadshow" with a bunch of cards and memorabilia she inherited from her great-great-grandmother. Turns out, the booty was a collection of ultra-rare baseball cards featuring the 1871 Boston Red Stockings. The...

[As you probably already know, starting on Thursday, August 21, Fxx is running the Every Simpsons Ever Marathon, running through all 552 episodes of "The Simpsons," plus "The Simpsons Movie." To aid in your viewing process, Team HitFix is selecting our favorite episodes from each day, plus an episode or two that you can skip and use as a bathroom or nap break.] Picking episodes for Day 1 of Fxx's Every Simpsons Ever Marathon was relatively easy. Yes, "The Simpsons" was quite fine right off the bat and it only improved as the show moved into its second season, but the fans here at HitFix were able to cobble together a clear list of favorites without any hugely disappointing exclusions. Day 2 was far more difficult. We have five participants picking episodes here and we each snagged two favorites for the day, which stretches from "Bart's Dog Gets an F" through to "Last Exit to Springfield," or from Episode 29 through Episode 76. I think we represented many of the best episodes from this fertile early period, but if I had been about to select four or five, I could have easily done it. My greatest regret is that we didn't have room for "Selma's Choice," which has possibly my favorite opening of the entire series --...

Nothin' wrong with some friendly father/son trash talk -- just ask Ken Griffey Sr., who took a shot at his famous son yesterday ... and hit him where it hurts. The 64-year-old Cincinnati Reds legend was at an event for National Hot Dog Day (seriously) in Washington D.C. yesterday when we asked what it was like having a famous son with the same name. That's when Senior took a dig at "The Kid" -- telling TMZ Sports,...

In addition to running Nintendo, Hiroshi Yamauchi, who passed away last Thursday at the age of 85, was widely credited with saving the Seattle Mariners when he bought a controlling stake of the baseball team in 1992. The Mariners then enjoyed popularity in the ‘90s behind Ken Griffey Jr. and in the early ’00s behind fellow Japanese countryman Ichiro Suzuki, but the franchise has struggled in recent years, prompting questions of whether Nintendo of America, whom Yamauchi placed the team’s control under in 2004, would look to sell their stake now that the gaming visionary has passed on. According to...

Ken Griffey Jr. was inducted into the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame on Saturday (Aug. 10). Standing before a cheering and sold-out crowd at the team's Safeco Field, one of the team's all-time greatest players was welcomed back with open arms.
He had been missed, after all. And Mariners fans celebrate what they miss.
To understand the rapturous welcome Griffey received in Seattle when he -- along with six other Mariner greats -- made the Hall of Fame, you have to know something about baseball in that city: The Mariners get a lot of love, even when it's not deserved.
And they don't deserve it very often. When Ken Griffey Jr. made his Major League debut on the 1989 team, they needed a star. That's what the Mariners got. Quickly the standout on the team, Griffey would go on to hit 417 home runs (out of 630 in his career) for the Mariners. He...

The 139th running of the Kentucky Derby won't last much longer than two minutes, but the party at Churchill Downs is an all-day affair.
Fans lined up early on Saturday morning outside the famed track in Louisville, braving the rain and enduring the security lines. Whether heading to Millionaires Row or to the raucous party in the infield, the scene at the Kentucky Derby has something for everyone, provided you like mint juleps.
As usual, the Kentucky Derby has brought out big names and even bigger hats. Aside from Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino, who is a partial owner of one of the horses in the field, the world of sports was well represented. Julius Erving, Ken Griffey Jr. and Warren Moon were among some of the high-profile athletes photographed arriving. They were joined by Hollywood celebs, musicians, models and Miss American 2013 Mallory Hagan.

EA Sports recently announced that the next Madden game will feature realistic concussions with more severe consequences in an effort to raise concussion awareness and educate kids about head trauma. Personally, I think this is a great move, because if kids nowadays are anything like me, they’ll learn everything there is to know about sports from sports video games. Here are 25 Crucial Lessons I Learned From Playing Sports Video Games: 1. Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! taught me that when your corner guy gives you faster advice, your body heals (but only once). 2. NFL Blitz taught me that elbow-dropping an already-tackled running back after the play is a fun and insignificant thing to do. 3. NBA Jam taught me that when you set a net on fire, you can goaltend. 4. Tecmo Bowl taught me that when the defense calls the right play, your O-linemen give up on life. 5. Nhlpa ’93 taught me that...

The Espy Awards aired on Espn last night, and while Seth Meyers, Will Ferrell, and Paul Rudd & Steve Carell were all surprisingly funny (I say “surprisingly” because of the awkward Espys forum, obviously all those people are funny individually), they still didn’t match Norm Macdonald’s uncomfortably hilarious Espys monologue from 1998, which Deadspin has recovered and posted for the sake of internet posterity. Ken Griffey Jr. is more not-amused in this clip than anyone has ever been at anything, which makes it all the more awesome, obviously. Click the pic below to watch:...

Sir Patrick Stewart, formerly of the Starship Enterprise, got himself knighted by Queen Elizabeth II on Wednesday at Buckingham Palace. A few voices in the Twitter Report feed congratulated him, but Jeff Parker believes he knows what Stewart's first knightly duty should entail.
Much of the comics world was too busy to concern themselves with such news, however, since Heroes Con is scheduled for this weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina. Bernie Wrightson, R. Stevens, Rob Liefeld and a number of other have been packing to head out to the show, as well as tweeting the booth numbers you'll find them at. A few of those are retweeted after the jump where you can also find reactions to Ken Griffey Jr.'s retirement and some hot "Losers" artwork from Jock.
It's all in the Twitter Report for June 3, 2010.

There has been no shortage of tributes to Michael Jackson in the past two weeks, from mixtape tracks to concert nods. But perhaps the strangest (and at the same time most endearing) tributes came from the world of sports.
Yesterday, basketball forward (and rapper/music mogul) Ron Artest signed a new contract with the Los Angeles Lakers (perhaps he can be the new Method Man). He’ll join the defending champions for five years at $33 million, but the biggest headline-grabber was that Artest said he would wear jersey number 37 as a tribute to Michael Jackson. Why 37? That’s the number of weeks Thriller spent on the top of the charts. It’s not the first time that Artest has made a music reference in his number: While on the Sacremento Kings, Artest wore the number 93 as a nod to the Queensbridge projects (a place that also gave the world Nas...
