Comic Relief launched in 1985 with a telethon that has since become embedded in British culture. Known as Red Nose Day, on account of the red noses sold as part of the appeal, over the years this has led to many classic comic moments, from The Young Ones singing Livin’ Doll with Cliff Richard, to Johnny Depp and Sting appearing in The Vicar Of Dibley, to Billy Connolly running naked through Trafalgar Square and Mr Bean infiltrating both Blind Date and a Torvill and Dean dance routine.
The BBC have launched this year’s appeal with a sketch featuring Alex Jones, Alison Hammond, Davina McCall, Gemma Collins, Dame Joan Collins, Jonathan Bailey, Nick Grimshaw, Rosie Jones and Simon Cowell, which you can see below:

That this has been a low-key season of The Great British Baking Show is far from an insult. Quite the opposite — it’s been refreshing to see the show go back to basics in Season 11, with lots of pleasant Brits whose baking triumphs and tribulations never once made your blood pressure go up. No twink romances, no Italian dynamos, no controversies over ill-conceived nationally themed weeks.
It's not to say that this season was without its share of memorable contestants or narratives. There was new co-host Alison Hammond, whose established a good rapport with the contestants (though let's have a talk about Prue before next season).

Jack Rooke’s sitcom Big Boys returns to Channel 4 in January, and the details of the new run have landed.
Big Boys, Jack Rooke’s autobiographical sitcom about his experience at university, was one of the comedic treats of last year.
Derry Girls’ Dylan Llewellyn and Jon Pointing play two disparate young men, Jack and Danny, who find themselves as roommates in their first year of University. The former is closeted and sensitive, the latter is full of boorish bonhomie, but despite their differences they form a touching, tender bond, and Rooke’s writing covers everything from Jack exploring his sexuality to Danny’s mental health.
It proved a hit for Channel 4, which didn’t waste an awful lot of time in ordering up more episodes. Those episodes are nearly with us, too.
What’s more, we now have a synopsis for series two, which reads as follows:

The latest season of The Great British Baking Show — officially the 14th, though on Netflix it's marked as "Collection 11" — has been a rebound from the last few underwhelming installments. A big part of that has been the shakeup in hosts, with actress and TV host Alison Hammond joining a returning Noel Fielding. Hammond's fresh enthusiasm and easy rapport with the bakers has been a welcome change from the aloof stylings of Matt Lucas, on whom many of the show's fans had loudly soured by last year.
With Matt gone, though, we're free to have the conversation we've been putting off for several years now: Has judge Prue Leith outlived her usefulness on this show? Is she the next weak link in the chain who needs to be replaced?...

After a somewhat disastrous series of The Great British Bake Off last year, with too-tough tasks and a distinct lack of actual baking, we’re going into the new series with our hopes rising like a fresh-out-of-the-oven bread lion.
For one thing, producers have confirmed that they’re going back to basics with the tasks to let the bakers shine at what they do best
But just as promising is the new presenting line-up: after Matt Lucas chose to leave the show last year, Noel Fielding will now be joined by the wonderful Alison Hammond.

From her textbook style of bringing the best out of celebrity interviews to her entertaining mishaps, Hammond sprinkles magic over every TV show she appears on. “The Great British Baking Show” will not continue its country-themed challenges.
In a recent interview with the Guardian, “Great British Baking Show” producer Kieran Smith noted that changes were made following criticism from culturally insensitive theme weeks in previous seasons.
“We didn’t want to offend anyone but the world has changed and the joke fell flat,” he said of Season 13’s “Mexican Week.” We’re not doing any national themes this year.”
In October 2022, “The Great British Baking Show” faced backlash over its Mexican-themed challenge, in which hosts Matt Lucas and Noel Fielding donned sombreros and serapes while uttering comments that reinforced harmful stereotypes. The show faced a similar debacle with Season 11’s “Japanese Week.”
“We’re doing all the regular weeks: cakes, biscuits, bread, patisserie, chocolate, plus party cakes is a new theme,” Smith added about the upcoming season. “No spoilers, but it features challenges I think viewers will love.

‘Great British Bake Off’ Scraps National-Themed Weeks For New Series After Fans Slam “Casual Racism”
The Great British Bake Off will scrap its national-themed challenge weeks in the new series after viewers slammed these rounds in recent years.
The hit baking show will return later this month for its 13th series, but will be missing the country-themed challenges, which received a backlash for casual racism.
In 2020, the show had a ‘Japan Week’, then a ‘German Week’ the following year, and a ‘Mexican Week’ last year.
Besides the dishes from each country which weren’t sufficiently authentic, Mexican Week saw hosts Noel Fieling and Matt Lucas don sombreros, use maracas and speak in Spanish accents.
Executive producer Kieran Smith told The Guardian newspaper: “We didn’t want to offend anyone but the world has changed and the joke fell flat.

Embattled daytime show “This Morning” is advertising for a new producer.
The job, which pays £40,000 to £50,000 per year, is unrelated to the recent fall-out from the Phillip Schofield scandal. “It’s to replace someone who was promoted and has been live for some weeks,” says a source.
ITV is looking for a producer who “thrives on the buzz” of live television and has an “abundance of ideas” to support anchor Holly Willoughby and guest hosts including Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond, according to the job description, which is currently live on LinkedIn.
“This Morning” was rocked by the resignation of Willoughby’s longtime co-host Phillip Schofield last month, following tension between the two anchors. Schofield subsequently revealed that he had had an affair with a young runner on the show, whom he’d known since the runner was a teenager.

Updated: ITV presenter Phillip Schofield has been dropped by his agents at Ymu Group.
The parting of ways with Ymu comes as Schofield confirmed to the Daily Mail that he had an affair with a younger male staffer at ITV while he was still married. (The presenter came out as gay in February 2020 and is now estranged from his wife.) He has now resigned from ITV “with immediate effect” and has also pulled out of hosting the British Soap Awards in June.
In a lengthy statement, Schofield said: “Contrary to speculation, whilst I met the man when he was a teenager and was asked to help him to get into television, it was only after he started to work on the show that it became more than just a friendship. That relationship was unwise, but not illegal. It is now over.”

Kate Middleton could help guests swerve an “awkward” moment at King Charles III’s coronation. According to a royal expert, women who may feel “uncomfortable” about wearing a tiara to the ceremony could avoid it altogether depending on the Princess of Wales’ headpiece choice. Specifically, if Kate forgoes a tiara for a reportedly more “egalitarian touch.”

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has shared its latest membership data, revealing the makeup of individuals who vote across its awards.
The figures, released alongside a letter to members from chair Krishnendu Majumdar, state that as of May 2023, the current BAFTA membership comprises a 42:58 female-male split, with 16% of members from underrepresented ethnic groups, 7% with a disability, and 12% identifying as Lgbtqia+.
The overall number of global BAFTA members has now risen to over 11,500, with over 2,500 industry professionals from across film, games, and television joining since 2020, BAFTA reported. The data is the result of a mandatory survey handed to all voting BAFTA members before they can access films through the body’s official streaming platform.
In his adjoining letter, Majumdar welcomed the 2,500 new members and praised the organization’s efforts to open up the range of its members but concluded that much more needs to be done to address disparities.

Previously, Middleton seemed to gravitate toward sweeter cocktails. Showbiz Cheat Sheet has reported that she had an affinity for a cocktail called a “Crack Baby,” which is a passion fruit-vodka-champagne mixture.
She also previously has reportedly liked Jack Daniels whiskey, which provides cocktails with an oakier taste.
Of course, through the years, people’s tastes can change.
Recently, Middleton told This Morning host Alison Hammond about what kind of cocktails she’s drawn to these days.
“[She] said she liked spicy cocktails but doesn’t like sweet ones or anything like that,” the Great British Bake-Off host recalled.
Hammond also noted that Middleton enjoys spicy meals in addition to spicy cocktails.

Russell Crowe has opened up about Gladiator 2, and shared the sequel idea he considered returning as Maximus for.
The Kiwi actor played the character in the 2000 historical epic, which was directed by Ridley Scott.
Scott will next direct a sequel to the film, which will not feature Crowe, 59. Instead, the film will focus on Lucius, the son of Connie Nielsen’s Lucilla and the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), who will reportedly being played by Paul Mescal.
While promoting his new film The Pope’s Exorcist, Crowe has repeatedly told reporters he will not be in the new film – but did admit to Collider: “I mean, look, the only thing that I really feel about it is slightly jealous, you know?”
Explaining why, he added: “Because I was a much younger man, obviously, and it was a huge experience in my life. It’s something that changed my life, really.

However, her sister Mia did not pursue acting, and instead went into the medical profession.
On Instagram, their mother, Natalie, shared two photographs side by side: the first, of Mia dressed in scrubs, and the second, of Jenna, at a red carpet event.
“Two of my girls wearing very different outfits and doing very different things in life,” she wrote in the caption alongside it.
“Both came from me, and both raised by me. I’m equally proud of both of them and love them very much #proudmom.”

Ali Wong has explained the significance of the sex scenes in Netflix’s new thriller Beef.
Released on the streaming service last week, Beef follows the spiralling consequences of a road rage altercation between Danny Cho (Steven Yeun) and Amy Lau (Wong).
Minor spoilers follow for Beef – you have been warned!
Part of the series focuses on Amy’s unhappy marriage, which starts to strain as her grudge against Danny intensifies. At one point, her character is shown having an extramarital sexual encounter with an older man.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Wong opened up about the meaning of the scene.
“It’s just that Amy has a lot of shame about… When she says in the finale, ‘I don’t want anybody to see me’ – you know, so many people desperately want to be seen, and she’s like, ‘Oh, no, I really don’t want people to see me’,” said the actor and comedian.

Vic Reeves has admitted that he “never really speaks” to comedy partner Bob Mortimer.
The pair met in 1986, forming their comedy double act Vic and Bob, best known for their wacky panel show Shooting Stars.
However, in a new interview with the Radio Times, Reeves – whose real name is Jim Moir – admitted that he and Mortimer are rarely in contact.
“We never really speak much. Bob and I have never been ones for talking on the phone,” he said.
“[I’ll] see him now and then and have a chat about things.”
In recent years, Reeves has focused on painting, releasing his artwork under his real name.
However, he has often noted the link between art and comedy, saying that art, to him, is “just for laughs”.
“I’ve done straight drawings and paintings and things and I haven’t got as much pleasure out of them as if I’d done...

MasterChef has returned for its 19th season on BBC One – with a small but significant tweak to the rules.
The competitive cooking series, starring John Torode and Gregg Wallace, sees a group of aspiring chefs battle it out for the culinary crown.
Near the beginning of Monday night’s (10 April) episode, the two judges informed the chefs that they would wait outside the kitchen while their dishes were being prepared.
Wallace and Torode would then sample each competitor’s dish from a separate dining room.
“You’ll have one hour and 20 minutes to cook your dish,” Torode explained to the candidates. “Our MasterChef floor manager will be keeping you to time.”
In previous seasons, the judges were allowed access to the kitchen in order to inform contestants of their remaining time, announcing at the end that their time is up.
On social media, fans of the show complained that this role has now been outsourced,...

Ant and Dec have opened up about the “mischievous” way they introduced Bruno Tonioli to the Britain’s Got Talent family.
The ITV talent show returns this weekend, with former Strictly Come Dancing judge Tonioli joining the panel alongside Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon.
Speaking ahead of the series, Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly admitted that, during the first day of auditions, they gave the new judge a number of different rules to confuse him.
“We, quite mischievously, kept telling him different rules,” Donnelly told the Pa news agency. “So when he hit his golden buzzer on the first session of the first day, mid-way through an act, we told him not to worry because he had another golden buzzer tomorrow, and that he had one every day.
“We also played a prank on the rest of the judges by going into their room and doing a Bgt quiz,...

Russell Crowe’s latest film The Pope’s Exorcist has been condemned by The International Association of Exorcists (Iae).
In the trailer released last month, the Sony Pictures movie claims to be “inspired by actual files of father Gabriele Amorth, Chief Exorcist of the Vatican”.
“There is actually a real job called the Chief Exorcist in the Vatican,” Crowe explains in the film’s production notes. “Father Gabriele Amorth was a real man who held that office for 36 years, and was involved in tens of thousands of exorcisms.”
However, in a statement issued last month, the Iae, which Amorth himself founded in 1990, called the film “unreliable … splatter cinema”, per The Guardian.
It claimed that the film’s plot, which involves a Vatican conspiracy, poses “unacceptable doubt” as to who “the real enemy is, the devil or ecclesiastical power”.
