Johnny Depp wanted to congratulate his friend Robert Downey Jr. for his Oscar win Sunday night, but it didn’t necessarily go as planned.
The Pirates of the Caribbean actor initially took to his Instagram Story to celebrate the Oppenheimer star by sharing a photo of the pair together. However, it turned out it wasn’t a real photo of them but rather a photoshopped picture.
The real photograph taken in November 1988 featured Downey with his then-girlfriend Sarah Jessica Parker at a Young Artists Unite event in Los Angeles. But the photoshopped image replaced Parker with Depp and has actually circulated on social media and fan sites for years.
The Alice in Wonderland actor quickly deleted the photo and later shared another (real) photo of him with the Iron Man star at the Golden Globes in 2011. “Let’s try this again… congrats to my dear friend,” Depp wrote in the caption.

Sunday’s Oscar telecast delivered a rare moment in the sun for some of Hollywood’s most unsung heroes: Personal publicists. And while TV viewers might’ve wondered why they got so much love, those in the audience at the 2024 Oscars might argue the shine was due to a classic case of reverse psychology.
At precisely 4 p.m. inside the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, David Alan Grier took to the stage with a microphone in hand to make pre-show announcements. “Good evening and welcome ladies and gentlemen to the 96th Academy Awards,” said the veteran star with a clock ticking over his shoulder on the big-screen with less than three minutes and 40 seconds before showtime. “Y’all are going to be hearing from me for the rest of the night, but for the next minute, enjoy seeing me. Feast your eyes upon my body. I’m a real zaddy.”

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” an unsettling look at the dawn of the atomic era, dominated the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday, winning seven prizes, including best picture and best director. The film, which took on an added resonance at a time of international conflicts, also scored Oscars for Cillian Murphy’s haunted lead performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer and Robert Downey Jr.’s supporting turn as a vengeful bureaucrat.
“We made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb, and for better or for worse, we’re all living in Oppenheimer’s world,” Murphy noted in his acceptance speech.
And there were tangible reminders of that legacy, as well as of the global tumult that gave Nolan’s historical drama about the creation of the nuclear bomb its jolt of immediacy. Blocks away from the Oscars red carpet, several hundred protesters called for a ceasefire to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza,...

From School Of Rock and Enchanted through to Hail Caesar and Moana, we look at the unmissable musical numbers from modern movies...
The world has gone gaga for La La Land and it’s not difficult to see why. We love a good musical number. Sometimes there’s nothing more uplifting than a catchy tune with some fun choreography and other times music is the best, if only, way to depict a character's despair, fear or hope. Music taps into something very primal in us all and can often extract laughter and tears easier than two hours’ worth of dialogue.
Numerous classic musicals have graced the big screen since cinema began, but the 21st century alone has seen some fantastic songs in film. Some considered ‘musical films’ and others ‘films with music’, here are my top picks for this century’s best on-screen musical sequences.

You may not have seen him in quite some time, but Ryan Phillippe has kept himself pretty busy over the last couple decades. Phillippe rose to fame in the late 1990’s starring in such movies as I Know What You Did Last Summer, Cruel Intentions, 54, and Little Boy Blue. He would continue to act in movies during the 2000’s. Some of his more memorable performances were as Brandon King in 2008’s Stop-Loss, as John Bradley in Flags of Our Fathers, and as Officer Tom Hansen in Crash. After spending twenty years away from the small screen, Ryan Phillippe returned to television in 2012 to portray Channing McClaren in the final season of Damages. He would also make a comedic guest-star appearance on a 2014 episode of Men at Work. Now Phillippe is back on television in the new series Secrets & Lies, which began airing on ABC earlier this month. …

If you’re to believe the latest comedy pilot to be developed for USA Network, than love, as we know it, is dead. Gone are the days of romance and finding that one true love you can spend the rest of your life with because now there are people who will gladly break up your relationship if you’re just not feeling it anymore. I guess working on your issues is too difficult. Why put in any effort when you can just pay someone to end things for you and skip out on all the messy bits. That’s the idea behind Love Is Dead, and Janina Gavankar and Khary Payton have joined the pilot.
The two will co-star opposite Ben Rappaport, who is, according to Deadline, playing Alex, a man who is dumped by a representative of the Dunleavy Agency, which specializes in breaking up romantic relationships on the...

We've all been waiting to see if Robert Downey Jr. would be back to reprise his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man in any upcoming Marvel movies, and today it's been officially announced that Downey Jr. is set to appear in The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3! As for another stand alone Iron Man movie? That's not part of the deal. but who knows what will happen down the line.
I'm happy that Downey Jr. he'll be back! After all, he is Tony Stark, and I'm glad the studio was able to work out a deal with him. It's going to be very strange when Marvel does eventually replace him.

Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 saw Robert Downey, Jr. fulfil his contract with Marvel, having instantly soared to new levels of fame back in 2008 with the release of Iron Man.
Downey, Jr. has become almost synonymous with the character, Tony Stark / Iron Man, and everyone has naturally been waiting with baited breath as to whether or not he would return for future films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
And now our fears can be put to rest, with the studio officially announcing that he’s inked a two-picture agreement that will see him reprise Stark / Iron Man for The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3.
Of course, the press release below clearly makes no mention whatsoever of a potential Iron Man 4, and whether we see Downey, Jr. back in the suit for another solo movie remains to be seen.

The news was announced a few minutes ago on Marvel.com. Robert Downey Jr reprises his role as Tony Stark in a 2-picture agreement for Marvel’s The Avengers 2 (May 1, 2015) and Marvel’s The Avengers 3 (undated). The sequel will start production on March 2014 led again by writer and director Joss Whedon. Downey is represented at CAA by Bryan Lourd, Jim Toth and Matt Leaf and by his attorneys Tom Hansen and Stewart Brookman of the firm Hansen Jacobson. Downey’s past two Marvel films, 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers and this year’s Iron Man 3, rank as two of the top five grossing films of all time, collectively earning over $2.7 billion worldwide to date. (previously Hofflund/Polone) for the past 18 years, has been quietly informing her longtime clients — who include Sally Field, Kenneth Branagh, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Kevin Kline — of her decision since the beginning of the year. In light of her departure, Hofflund Co. managers Becca Kovacik and Laura Berwick plan to keep the company together. I hear the duo explored different options, including joining another management company, but opted to stay and partner up in a new shingle. Most of Judy Hofflund’s clients have already committed to staying with Kovacik and Berwick, with the rest likely to follow. Hofflund said she first considered quitting the business at the turn of the new millennium in 2000 but, with her daughters still in school, she put off her departure.

We’ve been told not to judge a book by its cover, but is it fair to judge a film by its title? Clearly, putting a name on your project must be something of a marketing migraine. You want an element of intrigue, but simply plucking a vaguely mysterious buzzword from the air will make people think they’re watching a perfume advert.
Likewise, you want to give your target audience some credit for being able to recognise a metaphor when they see one. So we know that the 1953 James Cagney film A Lion Is In The Streets is unlikely to be a public service announcement from the local zoo (although, curiously, Anne Francis does play a woman named Flamingo who attempts to feed her rival to an alligator).
But this list is not a crusade against figurative language. It would be absurd to expect a film title to accurately...

A thought question to start your day: would you be friends with yourself? I’m personally still on the fence about this one (would I really be able to stand someone who always squeezes the toothpaste from the middle of the tube and is more likely to shoot a sarcastic comment than a sincere one?), but maybe you readers will have a more definitive standing point. After you’ve thought about that for a bit, try this existential query on for size: would you kill yourself? But not yourself as you are this very minute, as you 30 years from now? What if it was your job to kill Future You?

Britney Spears has been given a $1,500 (GBP750)-per-week debit card allowance by a Los Angeles judge.
Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz set the Toxic singer's spending limit at a Spears estate conservatorship hearing on Monday.
As her court-appointed conservator, Spears' father Jamie fought for the allowance, explaining the cash would give the singer more freedom.
His attorney, Geraldine Wyle, told the court the allowance would allow Britney to "spend money, have her freedom, and make choices about how she wants to enjoy her life".
Spears herself skipped the hearing, despite being advised to attend by her attorney Samuel Ingham - who revealed to reporters that she objected to elements of the hearing.
In court, it was also revealed that a probate commissioner has hired two specialist lawyers to help Spears, who is worth an estimated $100 million (GBP50 million), and her legal team to organise her estate.
The first, Tom Hansen, will be paid $15,000 (GBP7,500) per month to preside over Spears' entertainment contracts.
The second, Jorge Hernandez, will pick up a $25,000 (GBP12,500) retainer to act as a consultant on all questions relating to the conservatorship.
Meanwhile, at a separate hearing concerning Spears' ongoing custody battle with her ex-husband Kevin Federline, her lawyer Stacy Phillips objected to her client paying Federline's $500,000 (GBP250,000) legal bill.
Phillips told the hearing Spears has already spent over $1 million (GBP500,000) for custody of her two sons and shouldn't have to pay her former spouse's legal expenses too.
Spears' lawyer also accused Federline of paying his attorneys too much, and leading an overly-excessive lifestyle.
She cited an example of one incident, during which Federline allegedly left a $2,000 (GBP1,000) tip on a $365 (GBP183) restaurant bill, arguing that if he can afford to be so frivolous with money then he should pay his own legal costs.
Commissioner Scott Gordon didn't rule in the private hearing, although Superior Court spokesman Allan Parachini says a ruling may be made on Tuesday.
