The fourth episode of the fourth season of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," called "Something Borrowed, Something Green," sees Lieutenant Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Lieutenant Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) sharing a dorm. In previous seasons, when the characters were merely ensigns, they slept in bunks in a hallway. They now have an enclosed private room for the first time, a wrinkle that soon has the two at each other's throats. Notably, they have come to blows over which of them gets to mist the room's adorable bonsai tree. Low-stakes animosity immediately forms. To make matters worse, Boimler's and Rutherford's respective holodeck hours have been double-booked, and they will have to share the day's recreation time together as well.
Curiously, both Boimler and Rutherford enter the holodeck dressed as Mark Twain, eager to spend a few quiet hours on an old-timey Mississippi riverboat. Affecting Twainian accents, the two begin by hurling insults, but...

The words offbeat, personal and edgy used to be a draw for movie fare — we’d check out a new relationship picture based only on an actor or two that we liked. Bobby Roth’s semi-autobiographical buddy story has a good stab at the early ’80s art + singles scene in Los Angeles, with a dash of macho clichés — pals Peter Coyote and Nick Mancuso fight in public and somehow suffer while bedding fantastic women. But the overall vibe is one of honest sensitivity, aided by fine performances from Carole Laure, Kathryn Harrold and Carol Wayne. Plus music by Tangerine Dream.

Warren Beatty’s show is a beautiful, one of a kind epic. Never mind that it is sharply critical of John Reed, an American who was buried in the Kremlin — Hollywood never approached the title subject directly: (whisper) Commies. Beatty’s production idiosyncrasies raised eyebrows but his picture is quite an achievement in filmic storytelling, cleverly accessing a political scene sixty years gone through testimony by notables that lived it. Beatty and Diane Keaton provide the romantic fireworks that make the film commercially viable, amid all the revolutionary fervor and political chaos.

A sizzling neo-noir that should have boosted Dennis Hopper into feature bankability goes a tad slack — my guess is that Hopper’s fine directing instincts got blurred in the editing process. Don Johnson, Virginia Madsen, Jennifer Connelly and others are well cast in Charles Williams’ hardboiled sex ‘n’ crime yarn, and the temperature indeed rises when Johnson gets near his co-stars. The narrative momentum breaks down somewhat, yet the great-looking show remains a favorite, atmospheric and oversexed.

Costa-Gavras’ superlative political thriller begins with a skeptical attitude, but soon pulls viewers into the depth and breadth of a monstrous political crime aided and abetted by our own U.S. government. Sissy Spacek and Jack Lemmon headline a strong cast, in a story that our State Department called a pack of lies — until the truth became undeniable.

It’s hard to know much exaggeration is used in movies about crazy Suth’un politics, when some of the serious movies resemble Julius Caesar with mint juleps. This true story is about an old-school populist Louisiana governor who falls for a nationally-known stripper, the famous Blaze Starr, and is told from the stripper’s Pov. Paul Newman is at his late-career best, and Lolita Davidovich lights up the screen. The governor can get away with most anything except what he wants to do most — pass some color-blind laws about hiring and voting.

X-Files Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering Chris Carter's 10-episode continuation of the X-Files television series.Life is a series of moments, strung together, rarely with much sensitivity or sense. Let’s look at two such moments, each from the teaser sequence of The X-Files’ second episode of its eleventh season (an installment titled “This,” written and directed by series executive producer Glen Morgan). The first: A car—its radio blasting the Ramones’ cover of “California Sun”—races toward a destination. The second: A pair of people—colleagues at first, then friends, then lovers, now middle-aged familiars—rests on a couch. One moment active, one moment passive, both on a collision course. But at this juncture, each instant exists unto itself. “There is only this—all else is unreal,” mused a character in Terrence Malick’s great romantic historical The New World (2005). (A prescient rhyme, perhaps,...

Gillian Anderson's threats to quit The X-Files have gotten an official response.
The 49-year-old actress has previously said that after this season of X-Files airs, she's done playing Agent Dana Scully. The 11th season of the sci-fi series premiered on Fox on Wednesday.
The show's creator, Chris Carter, responded to Anderson's claims during a Reddit Ama with fans on Tuesday, saying, “For me, the show has always been Mulder and Scully. So the idea of doing the show without her isn’t something I’ve ever had to consider.”
He also hinted that the season finale might address Anderson's need to leave. When a fan asked if Scully received "a proper goodbye," Carter teased, “I think you will want to sit down and watch the finale very carefully.”
Carter was also asked about Anderson by Entertainment Weekly ahead of the revival's latest 10-episode installment, to which he says she might be written off but she may also...

Joan Micklin Silver applies sensitive direction to Ann Beattie’s novel about a lonely guy trying to win back his girlfriend, and going about it in all the wrong ways. John Heard is excellent as Charles, who can’t understand why Laura (Mary Beth Hurt) has gone back to her husband and child. The whole thing plays out during a snowy winter in Salt Lake City… which is not the place to expect unrealistic romantic dreams to come true.

Chris Rock isn't quite done preparing for the Oscars - but not because he's writing a new script. On Monday, Rock's rep refuted claims that the host rewrote his opening monologue for the awards ceremony following the #OscarSoWhite controversy. "Regarding Reggie Hudlin's comments about Chris Rock's Oscar hosting duties, neither he nor anyone else speaks for Chris," the comedian's publicist, Leslie Sloane, told The Hollywood Reporter. Over the weekend, Oscar co-producer Reggie Hudlin suggested that Rock had made significant changes to his monologue, saying the host told him, "I'm throwing out the show I wrote and writing a new show.

[Originally appeared in Deadly Magazine #5] For nine seasons (and two feature films), fans of The X-Files became engrossed with FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully’s search for the truth and along the way, we were introduced to numerous supporting characters that helped them (or did their damnedest to foil their efforts) along the way. Here’s a look back at some of The X-Files’ greatest unusual suspects.
Deep Throat (Jerry Hardin)
Mulder’s first informant when the X-Files division of the FBI was established. A member of The Syndicate who wanted to expose some of the secrets the government had tried desperately to keep hidden, Deep Throat was tragically gunned down while trading an alien embryo for Mulder’s life in the first season finale, “The Erlenmeyer Flask.”

Approximately four months ago, X-Files fans everywhere collectively freaked out as Fox announced its plan for a six-episode revival of the series, more than a decade after the show had ended. An actual UFO sighting could doubtfully cause such an effect from hardcore aficionados who have drooled over Mulder’s deadpan dark humor and Scully’s magnificent eye rolls for years. Then on July 7, Fox released a trailer for the re-airing of the series and called for an X-Files marathon challenge where participants watch an episode per day, as the revival was only 201 days away. Sound on Sight will be joining in the nostalgic fun, posting weekly articles on each season’s mythology, standalone titles, character development, and finally, a spotlight on a favorite episode.

This week’s Law & Order: Los Angeles episode was full of criminal activity.
The real problems in "Reseda" arose in the prosecution when the D.A.’s office can’t stick the charges they want against repeat offender Stanley Vaughn and can’t stop the D.A. of San Bernardino from bringing up their star witness on larceny charges.
T.J. and Morales are still working out the kinks within their partnership. There is a great effort to show the bonding between the two men. The detectives seem to have balanced out their dialogue and provide a decent back and forth working their leads.
Morales and Tj even go on two home raids, where Tj’s previous hesitation towards danger appears to have disappeared.

If you read the title "Law & Order: Los Angeles," you know pretty well what to expect from the TV show, right?
And you'd be right, because while the original "Law & Order" is no more and the new show -- which debuts at 10 p.m. Et Wednesday -- is set on the opposite coast, it's still part of the "Law & Order" brand, which means the cops are smart, the prosecutors dogged and the perps doomed. That, and you'll hear the "chung-chung" sound several times per episode.
On all those counts, "L&O: La" delivers. There's a baseline of quality -- well-produced, plot-driven, generally smartly cast and acted -- to all the "L&O" shows, and it's evident here as well. Starting from there, we're going to look at the individual elements in the new show and how well they measure up to the standard set by 40-plus previous seasons of the various "Law & Orders.
