Duane Eddy, one of rock’s first guitar heroes and an idol of George Harrison, Jeff Beck, John Fogerty, Dan Auerbach, and many other guitar-slingers who followed, died Sunday at his home in Franklin, Tennessee. He was 86. A source close to the family confirmed Eddy’s death to Rolling Stone.
Released in 1958, Eddy’s “Rebel-’Rouser” wasn’t the first instrumental hit, but it was one of the most arresting. Arriving just a few years into the birth of rock & roll, “Rebel-’Rouser” announced that the raucous new genre was...

Exclusive: BBC commissioning executives are booked to see the award-winning musical Standing at the Sky’s Edge, which opens Wednesday night at the Gillian Lynne Theatre following its transfer from a sold-out season at the National Theatre. This column told you a year ago that StudioCanal’s Red Production company is developing the musical into a TV drama series.
The TV production will be based on the stage show by playwright Chris Bush and glorious songs from the catalog of singer-songwriter Richard Hawley. Sources tell me that a deal is strongly favored between Red and the BBC.
Bush is writing the screenplay for the series, expanding the storylines for characters they created for the show that originated at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre in south Yorkshire in 2019, having been commissioned by Sheffield Theatres and producer Rupert Lord’s Various Productions.

Pulp stopped in their hometown of Sheffield for a pair of shows on their reunion tour over the weekend. To make the second night even more special, they closed out the set by debuting an unreleased song called “Hymn of the North.”
“I can promise you that no one has ever heard this song except for us on this stage,” vocalist Jarvis Cocker said to the crowd while introducing the performance. “Actually that is a lie. It’s a song — a kind of version of it was featured in a play by a guy called Simon Stephens. And it’s called ‘Hymn of the North.’ So we are in the North, so we thought you should hear it first, Ok.”
Cocker continued by sharing that the band had “some lively discussions” about whether they should play the song live. “There’s a lot that could go wrong with it — I’m playing the piano,...

Wes Anderson’s latest endeavor Asteroid City is making its crash-landing into theaters this Friday, June 23rd, and it has a fitting soundtrack to match. As a preview, Jarvis Cocker has shared one of his contributions to the film called “Dear Alien (Who Art In Heaven),” a single he wrote with Anderson and his former Pulp bandmate Richard Hawley. The song also features Seu Jorge, who was prominently featured on the soundtrack for Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.
Considering Asteroid City takes place in a desert town in 1955, the soundtrack comes chock-full of period-setting tunes like classic bluegrass and country as well as mid-century pop. Along with a couple of originals from Cocker are songs by Bing Crosby, The Springfields (featuring a young Dusty Springfield), Burl Ives, Tex Ritter, and many more, as well as a score by Alexandre Desplat.

It’s succession season at the UK’s National Theatre with Rufus Norris, the institution’s Artistic Director, announcing that he will step down in 2025 after a decade in the post.
“It’s good to keep leadership evolving,” Norris noted during a press conference at the National’s base on the south side of the River Thames, in the shadow of Waterloo Bridge.
The National’s board will determine Norris’s successor. They will cast a net far and wide and there’s an eagerness to end the white male hold on the Nt’s leadership.
Meanwhile, Norris has been getting on with the business of running the country’s flagship theatre company.

The top honorees at the 2023 Laurence Olivier Awards were plays that focused on cultures outside of London. “My Neighbour Totoro,” which is based on the beloved Japanese film of the same name from Studio Ghibli, won six trophies, the most of the night, including Best New Comedy, Director, and four craft categories. A revival of the American classic “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams claimed three: Best Play Revival and for lead Paul Mescal and featured player Anjana Vasan. Meanwhile, the British-based “Prima Facie,” which is set to bow on Broadway this month and will thus compete at the Tony Awards, took home two prizes for Best Play and for star Jodie Comer.
The only other productions to win more than one trophy were all musicals. “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” won two of the top prizes: Best Musical and Best Original Score or New Orchestrations. “Tammy Faye,...

Exclusive: Standing at the Sky’s Edge, which won best musical at the Olivier Awards Sunday night, will transfer to the West End’s Gillian Lynne Theatre early in 2024, Deadline can reveal.
The show written by playwright Chris Bush, featuring rock songs from the catalog of Richard Hawley, moves into the Gillian Lynne from February for an initial six-month season.
It won two prizes at Sunday’s ceremony: the all-important best musical honor and original score or new orchestrations for Hawley’s music and lyrics and Tom Deering’s orchestrations.
The story is set in Park Hill, a brutalist apartment block built in the early 1960s, and follows three families who occupy one particular flat at different periods over six decades. Hawley describes it as a “love letter” to his hometown of Sheffield in South Yorkshire.

Two new works based on existing material dominated the nominations for the 2023 Olivier Awards, the top theatre honor in Britain. “My Neighbour Totoro” and “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” lead the play and musical fields with nine and eight bids apiece. The former is a stage adaptation of the Studio Ghibli film of the same name, brought to life in a visually stunning production featuring impressive puppetry by Basil Twist. “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” uses songs from the Richard Hawley album and new material to tell the story of three families in a Sheffield housing complex.
Revivals had strong showings, too. Director Daniel Fish’s remounting of “Rodger & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!” and the Paul Mescal-led “A Streetcar Named Desire” netted seven and six nominations, respectively. No one puts on a show like P!nk. Just look at last year’s tour, a carnival of flashing lights and giant balloons that culminated each night in the US pop artist somersaulting through the air while suspended on wires. She’s a born ringleader.
Be that as it may, she’s sometimes missed the mark. Second LP Missundaztood, with its merging of DIY punk, garage, hip-hop and R&b asserted her dominance over pop princesses such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. But Try This, in 2003, tried too hard to replicate its predecessor’s success. P!nk does best when she makes and breaks her own rules.
Perhaps that’s why Trustfall, her ninth record, falls short. It’s less a kaleidoscope than a clash of influences, with frenetic, thrashy pop-punk competing for attention against characterless dance music. This is P!nk’s latest collaboration with pop guru Max Martin,...

I was in ’ere last night!” says a hungover Richard Hawley as I greet him in his favourite Sheffield pub: Fagan’s. It’s a cold January afternoon and the musician is standing at the bar, chatting to the owners of 40 years, his friends Barbara and Tom. It’s a classic old folk club, with wooden-panelled walls dotted with picture frames and Guinness memorabilia. Despite his claim of being worse for wear, the 56-year-old is looking dapper, the rock and roll bridge between Elvis and Alex Turner. He’s wearing a tartan bomber jacket, handmade by a friend in the US. His dark hair is slicked back. He’s grateful to still have this asset; “I’m quite relieved,” he laughs, “most of the lads I went to school with look like footballs with eyes!” Hawley quit hard liquor a few years ago, but that doesn’t mean he can...

Swipe through Hinge or Tinder, and chances are you’ll see Etta Marcus’s name. Not because the London singer is looking for someone to date, but because single people have started to cite a love of her music as a non-negotiable. “All I ask is that you: listen to Etta Marcus” reads one dating profile. “We’ll get along if: you like Etta Marcus” states another. But Marcus herself had no idea about this. “Are you serious?” she says, her blue eyes widening.
Despite only entering the industry two years ago, Marcus has gained a distinct “if you know, you know” cult-like fanbase, akin to that early Tumblr movement surrounding a young Lana Del Rey. Why? Ed Sheeran has pledged his support for the Music Venue Trust’s (Mvt) Own Our Venues initiative.
Own Our Venues is a long term campaign which launched in June. It aims to intervene to help take ownership on some of the UK’s Grassroot venues.
The plan hopes to take control of the freeholds of these venues across the country and put them under a protected status of benevolent ownership.
“Own Our Venues is an initiative I’m really passionate about getting behind,” Sheeran said of the scheme, which hopes to raise an initial £3.5m by the end of 2022.
“Small, independent venues are so, so important to the music community, and I’ve played some of my favourite gigs of my career in these rooms.

The time has come to say goodbye,” Richard Hawley informs the crowd, as he closes his four-night residency at The Leadmill, Sheffield. The packed room is bathed in a red glow, casting strange silhouettes across the black-painted walls. Those walls have seen a lot. They’ve seen Hawley play hundreds of times – more than any other artist – and hundreds more fans hypnotised by his rich, velvety voice. Yet his farewell tonight is particularly poignant. Not only is this the end of a great gig; it’s soon to be the end of The Leadmill as we know it.
As an independent music venue, The Leadmill has played a pivotal role in the careers of some of our most celebrated rock artists. A former community centre that opened in 1980 in place of The Esquire (a Sixties club visited by Jimi Hendrix), it’s where Hawley got to practise his crooning rock’n’roll,...

Some television viewers are allergic to cliché. For them, reliance on old archetypes is symbolic of an inexcusable laziness on behalf of writers. But the first television drama, The Queen’s Messenger, was broadcast in 1928, meaning we have had almost a century of television at this point. And each year of that has involved more and more content being churned out. So, by now, if you’re not hitting a few clichés, you’re making something so odd it might as well have been produced by an alien visitor. All the same, ITV’s new police drama Ridley hits cliché after cliché with such precise aplomb that even the most resilient of viewers will find their eyes watering and skin itching. Achoo.

By order of the Peaky Blinders, Universal Music is issuing a blood-red vinyl edition of the official soundtrack to the popular series, which just tied its own record for viewers in the Season 6 debut.
The highly-anticipated Season 6 premiere of the period gangster epic was watched by 3.8 million viewers in the UK on Sunday, according to overnight figures. That ties the record set by the Season 5 finale.
The show is expected to return for US viewing via Netflix some time later this year. The soundtrack is available as of May 27, but can be pre-ordered.
Peaky Blinders began airing on BBC Two in 2013 and went on to win the BAFTA for Best Drama in its fourth season. It then moved to BBC One in 2019 and has continued to grow. Executive producers are Caryn Mandabach, Steven Knight, Jamie Glazebrook, David Mason, Anthony Byrne and Cillian Murphy.

Episode One: Black Day Charlie Chaplin, William Blake, and The Shining
– The Romani gypsy words spoken by Ruby in her fevered state appear to be “Tikno mora o beng o beng”. In this English/Romani dictionary, ‘tikno’ means child or small, ‘mora’ or ‘maura’ means to slay or kill, and ‘o beng’ means ‘the devil’. Tommy takes those words extremely seriously and instructs Lizzie to keep Ruby away from horses and water, and to have Johnny Dogs’ eldest wife Esmeralda put a Black Madonna pendant around Ruby’s neck for protection from curses.

With this week’s release of its fourth and final season, “Casual” finished a magical run. One of Hulu’s first original series, the show managed its main characters’ personal turmoil with great care, avoiding some of the teen and midlife cliches that can befall so many other TV shows.
Aside from sharp writing and an influx of strong directorial voices, “Casual” also greatly benefited from having the best soundtrack in the business. It’s a catalogue of songs, bridging decades’ worth of sensibilities, that worked in concert with Mateo Messina’s gentle, understanding score to make a solid musical foundation for the show’s 44 episodes.
As music supervisor for all four seasons, Tricia Halloran helped bring together that wide-ranging collection of songs, from Dirty Projectors to Cyndi Lauper, Sinkane to Richard Hawley, Anderson .Paak to Lucius. As Halloran told IndieWire, her process benefited from a great amount of trust...

There’s little love lost for Kim Longinotto’s slapdash documentary montage
Valentine’s Day is upon us, but the release of this film by Kim Longinotto is a disappointing and uninteresting way of marking that fact. It is a miscellaneous montage of film clips from the past century, accompanied by music from Richard Hawley, on the vague subject of … love. There are archive fragments from documentaries, romances, and grisly and puritanical sex-education films (of the kind anthologised by the BFI in its boxset The Joy of Sex Education). There are bits from the 1929 silent movie Piccadilly starring Anna May Wong, and from My Beautiful Laundrette. It seems as if anything and everything could have been included. But the selections and juxtapositions are neither interesting nor insightful – certainly not compared to, say, Julien Temple’s recent essay London: The Modern Babylon or Charlie Lyne’s study of teen movies, Beyond Clueless.

Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2014 discoveries”…
Christopher Abbott: 1). Richard Hawley’s records Cole’s Corner and Truelove’s Gutter. 2). Marc Maron’s Wtf podcast. 3). Anselm Kiefer sculptor/artist
Lavallee: Prior to playing the titular figure in Josh Mond’s James White, you were the visually tattooed/perhaps tormented central figure in his short film. How did that collaboration essentially assist in helping you reach the emotional depths demanded for this role?
Abbott: It didn’t really. But I think it started to establish how Josh and I would work together. We were friends already but hadn’t collaborated in that way yet.
Lavallee: Could you describe James relationship to with his mother, the unique bound they have and perhaps how that separation informs or influences his exchanges with those that surround him…

Shane Meadows has joked that the release of a new Stone Roses album in 2015 would be quick for the band.
The Stone Roses released their last album Second Coming in 1994, five and a half years after their self-titled debut.
After splitting in 1996, the band reunited in 2011 and at the time promised a "live resurrection" with new material, though have only played old songs at their live shows and festival appearances so far.
During Meadows's documentary The Stone Roses: Made of Stone, the director got visibly excited about the 'New Song' on the running order for a band rehearsal for their Warrington Parr Hall comeback.
However, the band played no new songs during that performance, and no new material is heard on the film itself.
Asked if he heard any new music during the making of the film, Meadows told Digital Spy: "No, we didn't. The day I think we were...

The Manic Street Preachers have so far spent twenty one years creating brilliant and important records. Unlike most bands that break into their third decade they have flourished rather than becoming stale. This time around the Manics have taken a breath and ‘Rewind The Film’ is a record that for a moment pauses and looks back nostalgically on youth in small welsh towns and the happiness and contentment that could be gleaned from simpler times. The anger of youth is still burning in everything the Manics produce but this time it is seen from a new perspective. Getting old is lamented but the blunt and defiant lyrics remain.
Clearly the brilliance of Ian McCulloch’s appearance on ‘Some Kind of Nothingness’ encouraged the band to feature more guest vocalists and this time around there are three who each have been expertly paired with their tracks. ‘This...

After an extended hiatus Welsh rockers Manic Street Preachers are releasing their 11th studio album ‘Rewind The Film’ in September. Speaking of the record James Dean Bradfield told the Daily Star:
“The acoustic album has a soul vibe, with Rolling Stones-style horns. The first single is very positive, but there are darker moments too.”
If it is anything like the beautiful title track which features Richard Hawley, it will be a contemplative, delicate record that is a definite change of direction from most of their previous efforts, not least 2010′s ‘Postcards From A Young Man.’ The single ‘Show Me The Wonder’ and a UK tour to promote the record are also due in September.
In the meantime here are some of the most vital tracks from the Manic Street Preachers’ back catalogue. Everybody is familiar with ‘A Design For Life’ and ‘If You Tolerate This…’ so there are no big hits here.

Sheffield International Documentary Festival, or – if you’re into the whole brevity thing – DocFest, is 20 years old.
To mark the anniversary of one of the most dynamic and interesting festivals in the world, the organisers have pulled out all the stops. Kicking things off this year are 3 stunning opening night events; The Big Melt – a film celebrating the Sheffield Steel Industry with a live score written by the Steel City’s favourite son Jarvis Cocker and performed by Cocker, Richard Hawley and The Sheffield Brass Band (among others) promises to be quite something; The Summit – a film about the perils of climbing K2 is being screened deep underground in the Peak District’s most evocatively named cave, The Devil’s Arse and finally, a screening of Sundance World Cinema Documentary Award Winner Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer, which – tantalisingly – features a Q&A with the non-incarcerated band members.

As Superman prepares for global lift-off, Cocker fine-tunes the premiere of the opening night film at the Sheffield Doc/Fest
This year's Sheffield documentary festival kicks off on Wednesday with a double celebration for the city: it's hosted the fest for two decades, and it's put in 100 making stainless steel.
The opening night event, The Big Melt, smelts the two together: a documentary by Martin Wallace, it splices archive footage of the city and its steelworkers to a live soundtrack by Jarvis Cocker and other Sheffield musical alumni, including the City of Sheffield Brass Band, Richard Hawley and members of his band, some of Cocker's Pulp colleagues, the Forgemasters, a string quartet and a youth choir.

The band played 'The Conversation' - the title track from their new studio album - on the popular BBC music show.
Texas also performed new tracks 'Dry Your Eyes' and 'Detroit City' during their visit, which will be broadcast during Friday's extended edition of the show on BBC Two at 11.05pm.
"I think there's a lot of different moods within the album, but we've definitely gone back to our roots at the beginning," singer Sharleen Spiteri told Digital Spy of the band's new collection.
"We've gone back to what we're all about, but the record still sounds modern and current.
"We worked with friends - like Richard Hawley and Bernard Butler - so it was nice that there were no negotiations on how much it was going to cost, it was just mates suddenly writing songs together."
She added:...

Pitch Perfect; Seven Psychopaths; The Spirit of '45; I, Anna; May I Kill U?
"Aca-scuse me?" Variously pitched as "Glee with teeth" and "X Factor meets Mean Girls", Pitch Perfect (2012, Universal, 12) more closely resembles an anarchic mash-up of High School Musical and Best in Show, with a hint of Heathers and a smattering of Stick It thrown in for good measure. Anna Kendrick is the indie-spirited newbie at college where "organised nerd singing" is the new so-uncool-it's-cool sensation. From the moment we see the prim leader of the all-girl vocal group projectile-vomiting in the middle of an Ace of Bass tribute, you know this isn't going to be a well-behaved affair.
What follows is a tale of heats and heartbreaks, torment and Treblemakers, nobility and nodes ("they sit on your windpipe… and they crush your dreams"), a cheese-cutting satire which delivers a consistent spewy stream of laughs, screams and cackles.

Nashville, Tenn. — Twelve months ago the guys in British rock back Alt-j had a very simple goal: To release an album.
Just something you could hold in your hands, maybe listen to every so often.
"And at least feel that when we died we could legitimately say we released an album on a label," keyboards player Gus Unger-Hamilton said. "And we could look at it and say, `Look, we made an album once.'"
"Kind of like you can show it to your kids," guitarist-bassist Gwil Sainsbury said.
That debut, "An Awesome Wave," went on to win the prestigious Mercury Prize given to the top album of the year in the United Kingdome and Ireland in something of a shocker. The Cambridge quartet has since been a near constant conversation piece on the blogosphere and mid-sized club circuit on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
The band's in the midst of a U.
