Finnish director Tiina Lymi decided to “go big” for “Stormskerry Maja,” set in the 19th century. Based on a series of books by Anni Blomqvist, it has been selected for International Film Festival Rotterdam and Goteborg.
“It had to be done this way. It’s about life and death, love, sorrow and lust. Big emotions. I really respect my producers’ decision to commit to this budget. €4 million is nothing in the U.S., but it’s a lot in Finland.”
In the film – produced by Markus Selin, Jukka Helle and Hanna Virolainen for Solar Films and sold by Picture Tree Intl. – a young peasant woman, married off to a man she barely knows, moves to a remote island. Her new environment isn’t exactly welcoming, but Maja falls for it quickly – and for her new husband Janne.

LevelK, the international sales and aggregation outfit, has boarded Finnish horror film “The Knocking,” the feature debut of Max Seeck and Joonas Pajunen.
“The Knocking” revolves around three adult siblings who return to their childhood home, where their parents were allegedly murdered many years ago. Their plan is to get the house and estate ready to be sold but an evil force tries to prevent them from doing so.
Seeck and Pajunen said the “inspiration for ‘The Knocking’ comes from the Finnish forests, which offer an excellent setting for psychological horror and a stage for a world that oozes rather gloomy folklore and pushes the buttons of the viewers’ subconscious.”
“Our mission with ‘The Knocking’ is to create a mood that enables waking up these fears hiding in the corners of our minds,” said the pair.
The film stars Pekka Strang, Saana Koivisto (“The Serpent”) and Inka Kallen.

In the Icelandic musical adventure “12 Hours to Destruction,” writer-director Nanna Kristín Magnúsdóttir revels in a wholeheartedly youthful story of a school band battling nasties to save their dance.
The film, part of the Finnish Film Affair’s Nordic Selection of works in progress being held this week in Helsinki, is an ambitious project, produced by one of Iceland’s leading players, The Icelandic Film Company/Kisi Production, founded in 1991 by Julius Kemp and Ingvar Thordarson.
With a strong rep for both critical successes at festivals and for wider audience films, the company seems well suited to creating the whimsical project.
Kemp says the idea originated in his mind a few years back when, while doing parent duty, he encountered a musical called “Abbababb!,” created by Icelandic punk musician, rocker, TV host and children’s book writer Gunnar Lárus Hjálmarsson (a.k.a. Dr. Gunni).

Seven feature-length fiction films, three documentaries and two shorts have received close to €4.2 million in production aid. March has already got off to a good start in Finland, with 12 new titles being granted Finnish Film Foundation backing as part of the 50/50 production support scheme – aimed at productions with high audience appeal. Jussi-winning director Aleksi Salmenperä, now developing Bubble with Minna Haapkylä, of Rabbit Films, was granted €800,000, while Markku Pölönen will focus on Hamsters, following the successful run of his previous historical drama, Land of Hope. Popular franchises also keep going strong, with Lapland Odyssey 4 given €700,000 and Mika Kaurismäki taking over the third part of the successful Grump series, about a cranky yet ultimately rather loveable older man. Produced by Jukka Helle,...
Set to be finished in February, the new Swedish-language film will tackle some weighty topics, such as love, friendship and – the scariest of all – class. Based on a novel by Kjell Westö, Yellow Sulfur Sky is currently in post-production, with work on the sound mix set to coincide with the Finnish film's bow at Göteborg's Nordic Film Market. Produced by Jukka Helle and Hanna Virolainen, of Solar Films, as well as the director, Claes Olsson, it promises to dig into decades-long relationships, especially the one between Frej and Stella. “It's quite a complex story, with different characters as they meet and become friends, or even enemies later on – as happens sometimes when you get older,” Olsson shares with Cineuropa. “The main character, Frej, meets Stella when he is around 17 or 18 years old. Their relationship goes up and down, like a roller-coaster. They love each other,...

Exclusive: Cliffhanger and The Long Kiss Goodnight filmmaker Renny Harlin has completed filming on Class Reunion 3, his debut Finnish-language feature and the third entry in the highly successful series of comedy films from his native country.
The Solar Films production wrapped a rare pandemic era shoot after employing extensive Covid-19 safety regulations, including distancing, hygiene measures, and having a specially appointed virus safety supervisor on set.
As Deadline reported back in June, the pic was set to be one of the first European features to roll cameras since the pandemic gripped the production sector back in March, forcing near total shutdown of production around the world.
Class Reunion 3 is produced by Markus Selin and Jukka Helle of prominent local outfit Solar Films. It stars Jaajo Linnonmaa, a popular radio host in Finland, local celebrity actor Aku Hirviniemi, and famous standup comedian Sami Hedberg. The script was written by Harlin and...

Renny Harlin, one of Finland’s most successful exports to Hollywood having helmed the likes of Cliffhanger, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and Deep Blue Sea, is switching to his native language for his latest project, the third chapter in the highly successful comedy series Class Reunion.
The project is aiming for a late June production start date in Finland, local producers Solar Films told Deadline. This will be dependent on cast availabilities and ongoing consultation regarding Covid-19 safety, they outlined. The project could become of the first European features to roll cameras since the near-global production shutdown caused by the pandemic.
Finland has managed to largely contain the coronavirus spread, recording 320 deaths to date, which despite its fairly small population of 5.5 million still looks favorable in comparison with other European nations.

Who doesn't love a good snow-covered horror flick? Movies like The Thing and Adam Green's Frozen have shown that horror stories and winter make for a damn fine pairing, and the found footage flick Frost is the next one set to splatter blood in the snow.
We've been talking about the film for a long time here on Dread Central, and Entertainment One has just announced that it's headed to DVD over in the UK on February 10, 2014. And we just love the quote they decided to use on the cover.
