Australian actor and director Simon Baker led The Mentalist cast throughout its 7 seasons. Although several critics and viewers compared The Mentalist to the USA Network’s detective comedy-drama Psych, The Mentalist enjoyed amazing viewership during its run. The Mentalist originally aired on CBS from September 23, 2008, to February 18, 2015. Created by Bruno Heller, The Mentalist followed Patrick Jane, a former psychic who uses his heightened observation skills to “read” people’s minds and crime scenes. He gets hired as a consultant by the California Bureau of Investigation (Cbi), where he teams up with his boss, Senior agent Teresa Lisbon.

In the very early days of prestige television, a series appeared (some say it began the prestige era) that gave us a glimpse of what the future would hold. That series was "Rome," the story of the rise and fall of Julius Caesar (Ciarán Hinds) and the romance and death of Mark Antony (James Purefoy) and Cleopatra (Lyndsey Marshal). The series was gorgeous and full of rich historical detail, and the performances were spectacular.
The series, which ran from 2005-2007, came to us from John Milius, William J. MacDonald, and Bruno Heller. It nabbed talented actors like Hinds, Purefoy, Marshal, Lindsay Duncan, Polly Walker, Tobias Menzies, Kevin McKidd, and the late Ray Stevenson. It won a Director's Guild award, seven Primetime Emmy Awards, and quite a number of others.
The sets were stunning and actually existed in the world, in the historic Cinecittà Studios, right in Rome, from the Forum...

HBO Max is clearing out all of its live-action DC Comics scripted original series.
The Warner Bros. Discovery-backed streamer has canceled Pennyworth, the prequel show about Batman’s famed butler. The series wrapped its third and now final season Nov. 24.
The drama starring Jack Bannon as Alfred Pennyworth was created by Gotham creator Bruno Heller (who also served as showrunner). Pennyworth hailed from Warner Bros. Television and was developed for the MGM-backed premium cable network Epix (which is now known as MGM+). In a bid to reduce programming costs, the series was sold to HBO Max and paired with fellow DC series Doom Patrol and Titans on the platform. MGM+ still has the option to air the third season, though that seems highly unlikely even at a reduced licensing fee.

The arrival of "Rome" in 2005 marked one of the most expensive productions of all time for its co-producers HBO and BBC. Its makers had grand plans. Set in the first century Bce, "Rome" would chart Ancient Rome's transition from being a republic to an empire -- while taking us through the assassination of Julius Caesar, and the deaths of Mark Antony and Cleopatra. But the show lasted for two seasons out of a planned five, with about three seasons of story shoved into the second (and final) season. The reason? I've already brought it up -- the budget.
The first season of "Rome" cost upwards of 100 million. That's about 8 million per episode. A lot of that money went toward the incredible sets and the amazing costumes. "Rome" showrunner Bruno Heller, who had the task of planning out the five seasons, told Den of Geek in late 2020 that he was...

The Pitch: Ah, what could and should have been. Back in 2005, which is exactly 1000 years ago in the post-pandemic reckoning, HBO pretty much began the era of very expensive, prestige television with the TV series "Rome." This was before streaming and the rise (and fall) of many services with a whole lot of money to burn. "Rome" was incredibly expensive, but it was so good that fans clamored for more. There were supposed to be five seasons, though we only got the first wonderful one and a second, very rushed (but still good) season. Think of it this way; "Rome" had to walk (and get canceled early) so that "House of the Dragon...

Simon Manyonda's Lucius Fox has his work cut out for him on Pennyworth Season 3 Episode 9, streaming now on HBO Max.
It was the penultimate episode of the season, and Lucius tried to save as many PWEs as possible.
Scroll down to read our interview with the actor.
TV Fanatic: Firstly, could you speak a bit about how you got involved with Pennyworth?
I got an audition from my agent. She said, "I don't know if you'd be interested in this one."
I was like, "yeah, definitely interested in possibly playing Lucius Fox."
The audition came through saying they were looking for a young Morgan Freeman. I remember feeling like Morgan Freeman isn't Lucius Fox. Lucius Fox is Lucius Fox. And they also want me to interpret a Lucius Fox that's happened before. So I just went with my own creativity and my own kind of sense of who this character is.

Holy “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butler,” Batman! Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler recently kicked off its third season on HBO Max (after initially launching on Epix) with a five-year time jump that inches the action that much closer to a universe where costumed villains run amok. “We’re moving from a kind of ’50s world through the ’60s world and we’re now in the ’70s, I guess you’d say,” offers exec-producer Bruno Heller. “And that is when things start going a little crazy.” He ain’t lying. The season premiere introduced us to Pwe — People With Enhancements — like a guy with a robotic arm who could very easily evolve into the kind of high-tech terror we’re used to seeing on the streets of Gotham. Heller and co-ep John Stephens joined series stars Jack Bannon and Ben Aldridge, who play Alfred Pennyworth and Thomas Wayne,...

“Pennyworth” isn’t exactly the same show in Season 3 that it was during the opening two years of its run on the soon-to-be-rebranded Epix. What began as a well-executed thought experiment — “What if Batman’s kindly caretaker was a Bond-style government contractor when he was in his twenties?” — has gradually morphed into something different. The opening credits theme has sanded off a bit of its orchestral flair, the show now has the unwieldy subtitle “The Origin of Batman’s Butler,” and the London surrounding its main character is absorbing more and more “Mad Men” pastels by the episode.
Yet, with all those changes, “Pennyworth” is the rare bright spot amid a litany of baffling-to-fatal decisions for HBO Max in 2022 (a list that got longer and graver just in the last few days). The streaming service that at its debut seemed like a home for some its namesake’s spirit of...

The creator of the DC Comics series Pennyworth has revealed the reason behind the widely ridiculed title change.
Earlier this year, it was announced that the series would be retitled Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler for its third season, prompting a wave of derision on social media.
Speaking at New York’s Comic Con, series creator Bruno Heller outlined the thinking behind the change.
“HBO Max did their research, and they discovered a fair few people who had watched and enjoyed the first few seasons of Pennyworth, but had not realised it was about Batman,” he told EW.
“They just thought it was about a bloke who left the army.”
He went on to describe this lack of context as “a bit of an error, in terms of our conceptualisation”.
“It became clear that [changing the name] was just a sensible, matter-of-fact thing to do,” Heller continued. “We came up with a...

Did you know that Batman's famous and devout Butler, Alfred Pennyworth, has his own spy show on HBO Max (after airing on Epix) from the creators of "Gotham"? And it's on season 3? Maybe the recent extended retitling of "Pennyworth" to "Pennyworth: The Origins of Batman's Butler" could alert you to that.
In 1960s London with alternative sameish-but-different history, former British Sas soldier, Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon) sought to found his own security company. He later ends up working for young billionaire Thomas Wayne. Bruno Heller has a funny way — quite literally — of describing the move of Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler from Epix to HBO Max.
First, imagine you’re in a grocery store and on the hunt for, ahem, something tasty to enjoy. “Years ago, people had very few choices. Now it’s much more like a supermarket,” explains Heller, who created the DC drama that stars Jack Bannon in the title role. “I don’t mean to be crass about this, but you’re on a shelf and where you are on the shelf becomes very important in a way that it wasn’t before. So platforms matter. We are just very excited to be in the center aisle, in the middle of shelf, next to the cornflakes instead of up there with the maple honey granola with soy granules in it. Television is going through a very fantastical moment.
“House of the Dragon,” the new prequel series for “Game of Thrones,” just premiered on HBO and HBO Max to boffo numbers, and next week “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” premieres on Prime Video, pitting two of the most well-known (and lavishly produced) fantasy properties on the planet. But if you never read the source material or watched earlier entries in the respective series, this could be all Greek (or Elvish) to you. With remarkably similar marketing campaigns, it’s undoubtedly confusing which is which (and whether or not there are actually witches in either show).
Let us break down the biggest differences between the two shows since, as Electric Light Orchestra once noted, confusion is such a terrible thing.
Franchise Potential Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen and Milly Alcock as Princess Rhaenyrs Targaryen in “House of the Dragon...

Pennyworth finally makes the jump from Epix to HBO Max in the fall.
HBO Max on Wednesday confirmed the series will finally return in October.

HBO's Game of Thrones was a cultural phenomenon that brought to vivid life George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novel series and leap-frogged the written saga to a controversial and epic conclusion.
While readers Patiently await the literary ending -- one that Martin has promised will be significantly different from what HBO's adaptation presented -- television fans missing the Seven Kingdoms can anticipate a veritable banquet of spin-off projects in the near (and not-so-near) future.
First out of the gate is House of the Dragon, a prequel series centered on the civil war of the dragon-riding Targaryen House, premiering on August 21.
Martin joined members of the cast -- Matt Smith, Steve Toussaint, Paddy Considine, Olivia Cooke, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Emma D'Arcy, Emily Carey, and Milly Alcock -- and co-creator Ryan Condal on a panel at San Diego's Comic-Con to discuss what we can expect from...

Starks and Lannisters. Targaryens and Tyrells. The Baratheon Stag and the Bolton Flayed Man. There are so, so many families of varying position and power in Game of Thrones that it could initially be dizzying. Indeed, we still recall how the early seasons were often hyped in major print publications with actual family trees, as well as cheat sheets on the history of the Seven Kingdoms. To the show’s credit, audiences learned it all. Even so, what they discovered was a drop in the bucket for the sordid and glorious world that exists in George R.R. Martin’s Westeros. After all, the Seven Kingdoms are more than the snapshot we saw during the life and times of Daenerys Targaryen.

The Game of Thrones sequel starring Kit Harington will be called Snow, and it has all been instigated by the actor, author George R.R. Martin says.
“Yes, there is a Jon Snow show in development,” Martin wrote Thursday on his personal blog. “Our working title for the show is Snow.”
In the entry on his blog, the author on whose books the award-winning HBO blockbuster was based, teased out a few more details of the potential series, which seems to be much further along than previously presumed.
For one thing, reiterating what GoT star Emilia Clarke told the BBC on Wednesday, Martin says that it was Harington himself who initiated the idea for the new show. The scribe once called the “American Tolkien” by Time magazine also revealed that Snow is partially staffed up.

Last week, news broke that HBO was in development on a “Game of Thrones” sequel series centered around Kit Harington’s Jon Snow character, the latest in a large suite of projects being developed that have their start in the world created by George R.R. Martin and dramatized by the blockbuster series (which concluded in the summer of 2019). Now, both Martin and Daenerys Targaryen herself Emilia Clarke are talking about the new series and its somewhat surprising origins.
According to Martin, who posted about the news on his website’s Not-a-Blog section, the project is codenamed “Snow” and has been development as long as the other “Game of Thrones”-adjacent series that HBO is developing, which are “Ten Thousand Ships” (from Amanda Segel), “Sea Snake” aka “Nine Voyages” (from “Rome” creator Bruno Heller) and a show centered around characters Dunk and Egg, from “The Pursuit of Happyness” writer Steve Conrad.

You know nothing about HBO’s post-Game of Thrones plans.
The network has entered into early development on its first sequel to its blockbuster fantasy drama: A live-action spinoff series centered on the fan-favorite character Jon Snow, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Kit Harington is attached to reprise the role should a series move forward. The actor was twice nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of an action hero who struggles to uphold his family’s noble values in a brutal world.
In Thrones’ eighth-and-final season, Jon Snow discovered his true name was Aegon Targaryen, a potential heir to the Iron Throne. In the series finale, he was exiled from Westeros and journeyed North of the Wall with the Wildlings to leave his old life behind.

“A Song of Ice and Fire” author George R.R. Martin promises he’s still working to finish his book series, but explained in a new blog post that a number of “Game of Thrones” spinoff series have taken up much of his time lately.
“The Winds of Winter,” the planned sixth novel in Martin’s book series, on which the HBO series “Game of Thrones” was based, has been in the works since at least 2011. In a Wednesday post on his blog, Martin admits while he made “a lot” of progress on the book in 2020, he made “less” in 2021. “But ‘less’ is not ‘none,’” Martin added.
Why did he make less progress in 2021? Because he was busy working on various “Game of Thrones” spinoff series in the works at HBO and HBO Max. The first, “House of the Dragon,” has wrapped filming and while HBO has yet to officially greenlight any additional shows,...

George R.R. Martin sent a raven Wednesday with updates on his highly anticipated new projects on his blog.
The 73-year old fantasy author behind “Game of Thrones” (and creative contributor to the just-dropped “Elden Ring” video game) cast some light on the numerous “GoT” prequel series that are in the works. Perhaps more importantly to his O.G. fans, he confirmed that he is still plugging away at his long-delayed novel “The Winds of Winter,” the sixth of seven planned doorstopper books in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series from which “Game of Thrones” and the entire Westeros mythos derives.
“Winds of Winter,” which was originally due to be published in 2016, is still coming, he says, but as a way of excusing himself for its absence, he wrote that Westeros is bigger than just one project now. But working in that world is his “number one priority,” he said.

Fantasy writer George R.R. Martin took to his blog Wednesday to offer updates on his many Game of Thrones spinoff series, and books including the long-awaited The Winds of Winter, among other projects. He also shared his thoughts on early cuts of HBO’s prequel series House of the Dragon, which he says is “coming soon.”
“House Of The Dragon has wrapped in London and is now in post-production,” he wrote. “What I have seen, I have loved. I am eager to see more.”
Martin says he is developing GoT spinoff series across live-action and animation, for HBO and HBO Max, respectively. “No, can’t tell you how many,” he said. “But it is my hope that a number of these shows will get on the air.”
Those on the live-action side he could speak to included a series centered on the character Corlys Celaryon, for which Rome creator-showrunner Bruno Heller has written the pilot; Nymeria series Ten Thousand Ships, for which showrunner Amanda Segel has delivered “a couple of drafts”; and a Dunk & Egg series from Steve Conrad, based on his novella series Tales of Dunk and Egg, the first season of which will adapt Martin’s novella, The Hedge Knight. “My team and I have had some great sessions with Steve and his team, and we really hit it off. He’s determined to do a faithful adaptation of the stories, which is exactly what I want; these characters and stories are very precious to me,” wrote Martin. “Contrary to what you may have read on line, the show will not be called Dunk & Egg, which could be mistaken for a sitcom by viewers unfamiliar with the stories. We’re leaning toward A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms for the series title, though The Hedge Knight has its partisans as well.”
On the animation side, Martin would only speak to a series set in Yi Ti, a region in the far east of the continent of Essos, the working title of which is The Golden Empire. “We have a great young writer on that one too, and I think the art and animation is just going to be beautiful,” wrote Martin. “I would tell you more if I could. I don’t think I can say a word about the other animated shows. Not yet.”
Martin said that he’s seen comments online questioning how involved he is in the upcoming Game of Thrones projects, sharing that “the answer is: a lot.”
“It’s my world, and while I have been working closely with some fantastic writers and showrunners, ultimately it is up to me to try to keep the canon… well, canonical…,” said Martin, “and to do all I can to help make the new shows great. (And I love these stories too).”
Martin also confirmed today that he is “still working” on The Winds of Winter, the anticipated sixth novel in the epic series A Song of Ice and Fire on which Game of Thrones was based. “I made a lot of progress on Winds in 2020, and less in 2021…” he wrote, “but ‘less’ is not ‘none.’ ”
In addition to Winds, Martin is currently writing “the second volume of Archmaester Gyldayn’s history, Fire & Blood”, with “a couple hundred pages” down and “a long way to go”; as well as “an illustrated, condensed version of Fire & Blood” done with Elio Garcia, Linda Antonsson and Raya Golden, and another book that he describes as “a Who’s Who in Westeros.”
While Martin maintains that “the world of Westeros, the world of A Song Of Ice & Fire” remains his top priority, he’s also currently at work on series including Roadmarks for HBO, Dark Winds for AMC, Wild Cards for UCP and Peacock, and the short film Night of the Cooters from director Vincent D’Onofrio, which he says “should be finished this month.”
Airing between 2011-2019, Game of Thrones was an epic fantasy series created for HBO by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss that saw nine noble families fight for control over the lands of Westeros, with an ancient enemy returning after being dormant for millennia. House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of that series and will tell the story of the House Targaryen, associated with GoT characters including Emilia Clarke’s dragon-taming Daenerys.

HBO is going all in on “Game of Thrones” spinoffs, with the upcoming Targaryen-centric prequel “House of the Dragon” first out of the gate later this year. While the network sets out on expanding the world of Westeros, don’t expect original series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to return to the franchise. Weiss recently told Entertainment Weekly he has no intention of returning to “Game of Thrones” in the future.
“All in, we were 11 years, probably, doing that show,” Weiss said. “When I say 11 years, it was full on, all in, all day, every day for 11 years. It was the best decade of our lives. It still kind of feels a bit like a dream, but we got to a place where it was pretty clear to us that we had reached the end of what made sense for us to be involved with in that world that we lived.

But we already knew that, right? HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys told Deadline that they are currently in talks with the team behind the dragons to figure out exactly when to launch the spinoff fantasy series and admits that the network was cautious about revealing a date before due to the impact of Covid on production.
The prequel series, which comes from George R.R. Martin, Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, has now finished production and fans should expect an update soon. It stars Paddy Considine, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy and Fabien Frankel. Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best and Sonoya Mizuno also feature.

Season three of the psychological thriller also stars Emma Paetz, Paloma Faith, Ryan Fletcher, Dorothy Atkinson, Ramon Tikaram, Harriet Slater and Simon Manyonda.
Season three begins after a five-year time jump: the civil war is over, and a cultural revolution has changed the world for better or worse - ushering in a new age of Super Heroes and Supervillains.

HBO Max has closed a deal to bring DC origin series Pennyworth to its platform for a third season.
The series, which aired for two seasons on Epix, has been renewed for a third season and will make the move to the WarnerMedia digital platform in 2022.
It comes after Deadline revealed that Pennyworth producer Warner Bros. TV was in talks to bring the show over to its sibling streamer. The deal also includes the first two seasons of the Batman butler prequel launching on the service early next year.
Deadline understands that Epix will get a second window, per the deal.
The move, announced at the DC Fandome event, is not a huge as the MGM-owned cable network has been trimming its slate of scripted originals and the show premiered before the studio launched its own streaming service. It will join other DC titles such as Titans, Doom Patrol and Peacemaker on HBO Max.

“Pennyworth,” the DC Comics drama revolving around the early years of Bruce Wayne’s butler Alfred, is moving to HBO Max for its third season.
The series produced by Warner Bros. Television aired for its first two seasons on Epix, the pay cabler owned by MGM. But now that HBO Max is the center of the WarnerMedia universe, it had long been expected that “Pennyworth” would jump to the in-house platform for Season 3. HBO Max has ordered 10 episodes.
The first two seasons of “Pennyworth” will become available on HBO Max early next year. There’s no word on a Season 3 premiere date beyond next year.
The series stars Jack Bannon as Alfred Pennyworth, a former special forces soldier in the British military who initially goes to work for Bruce Wayne’s father, Thomas Wayne, in 1960s London.

It’s pretty impressive that Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, who twisted Gotham into a funhouse mirror image of the comic book source material, got invited to do it a second time with their Epix series Pennyworth, purportedly the origins of Alfred. But which Alfred? And for which version of Batman?
Pennyworth: The Complete Second Season, with Covid-19 interruptions, finally arrived at the end of 2020 and is now available on a two-disc Blu-ray set from Warner Archive. You can decide for yourself if the series needed its connections to the Batman mythos, needed to exist at all or is entertaining. As with Gotham, the chaotic and uneven storytelling continues here in this weird, alternate reality of the world.
While it looks like the 1960s, the politics of England is decided more fascistic, and lots of secret organizations are having a secret war with the kingdom’s fate at stake.

One of the “Game of Thrones” prequels in development at HBO, “10,000 Ships,” has found its writer.
Amanda Segel is set to pen the project, Variety has confirmed. “10,000 Ships” is one of several “Game of Thrones” projects in the works at HBO. The show would follow Princess Nymeria, who journeyed with the Rhoynar to Dorne and married Lord Mors Martell.
HBO declined to comment.
Segel’s past credits include “Person of Interest,” “The Good Wife,” “The Mist,” and “Helstrom.” She is repped by WME, Anonymous Content and Myman Greenspan.
Among the other “Game of Thrones” projects is “9 Voyages,” which would center on Lord Corlys Velaryon — known as the “Sea Snake” and head of House Velaryon, husband to Rhaenys Targaryen — on the Sea Snake vessel. The most well-known nautical adventurer in all of Westeros, Lord Corlys built a house even wealthier than the Lannisters and claims the largest navy in the world.

Exclusive: Princess Nymeria has found her chronicler.
Amanda Segel, co-exec producer on Hulu’s Helstrom and Person of Interest, has been tapped to write one of the Game of Thrones spinoffs.
Deadline understands that Segel is tackling the 10,000 Ships project, which is one of three spinoffs that we revealed were in the works at HBO. HBO declined to comment.
The drama is expected to follow the journey made by warrior queen Princess Nymeria and the surviving members of the Rhoynars, who traveled from Essos to Dorne following their defeat by the Valyrian Freehold in the Second Spice War.
This migration took place around 1,000 years before the events depicted in the A Song of Ice and Fire novels. Arya Stark, played by Maisie Williams, named her direwolf after Nymeria.
Segel’s past writing credits also include CBS’ The Good Wife, on which she was a producer, and as an exec producer...

Pennyworth may have not one but two homes when (and if) it returns for a third season.
The Bruno Heller drama about the early days of Batman’s butler may wind up being shared between Epix, the MGM-backed premium cable network that has been the show’s home for its first two seasons, and HBO Max, the streaming sibling of Pennyworth studio Warner Bros. Television.
Sources say Epix and HBO Max will likely end up sharing Pennyworth, with the streamer getting the first window to season three. Epix would air the third season of the Jack Bannon starrer at a ...

Exclusive: After two seasons on Epix, DC origin series series Pennyworth is plotting a move to HBO Max for a potential third season.
I hear negotiations between Epix and Pennyworth producer Warner Bros. TV are still ongoing, and they involve hammering out a deal for the existing two seasons of the show, which premiered on Epix, to also be available on HBO Max. If an agreement is reached, and there is a Season 3 pickup, I hear Epix would get a second window, I hear. Reps for Epix, Wbtv and HBO Max declined comment.
The development is not surprising. Pennyworth was sold to MGM-owned Epix months before Wbtv parent WarnerMedia announced plans to launch its own streaming service, which became HBO Max. Existing originals on Warner Bros. TV Group’s platform DC Universe, including Harley Quinn and Titans, migrated to HBO Max, which was billed as a premium home for...

“Game of Thrones” may have ended two years ago, but there are still more tales left in Westeros to tell. HBO also signed a five-year development deal with “A Song of Ice and Fire” author George R.R. Martin to work on a slew of spinoff projects. Here’s a look at every series in the works:
“House of the Dragon”
The first spinoff series to trail the success of “Game of Thrones” is none other than the prequel “House of the Dragon,” which is set to enter production this spring and is currently eyeing a 2022 debut. The series, which received a 10-episode order from HBO in October 2019, is based on George R.R. Martin’s book “Fire & Blood” and takes place 300 years before the events of “Game of Thrones.” As their house rules over Westeros, Daenerys Targaryen’s ancestors will be placed front-and-center of the series, which will lead to...
